In Questions Jesus Asks, Israel Wayne explored twenty questions Jesus asked while on His time of Earth and many of these questions included questions He asked the many different people He encountered. Israel Wayne began the book by reminding readers that Jesus was constantly seeking intimacy and unity between Him and God. He did the work of His Father and reply on His guidance throughout His time on Earth. One of the first questions, Israel Wayne discussed was, “Who Do People Say that I Am?” He shared some quotes from different atheists and Christians about who they thought Jesus truly was. Next, he explored the passages where Jesus asked the disciples what others said about who he was. He also asked them who they believed He was. He revealed a shocking poll from Harris (2013) about if people believed Jesus was God or the Son of God, if He was born a virgin, and if he really did rise again. The heartbreaking reality is the numbers have slightly dropped. Some of the others questions, he investigated was, “Why Are You Afraid”, “Has No One Condemned You”, “Why Have You Forsaken Me”, “Why Do You Persecute Me”, “Do You Want to Get Well”, and many more.

One of my favorite chapters was, “Why Are You Afraid” because this one conversed the importance of only having one fear in our lives. And that fear is fearing the Lord (Prov. 23:17). Israel Wayne was very open about revealing when he was a little boy being afraid of the dark until he eventually overcame this fear. Many people in the Bible also struggled with fear controlling their lives. For instance, Abraham, Moses, Joseph and Mary, the children of Israel, and many more. In this chapter, he dug into the scriptures concerning the disciples being afraid of the storm and their boat sinking and they would all die. Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep and at peace while the storm was occurring. Israel Wayne prompted readers to trust God and not fear our circumstances.

I would recommend this awesome book about the questions Jesus asked while His journey on Earth and His departure to Heaven. Israel Wayne did an excellent job at researching all of the questions Jesus asked and answered. I liked how Israel Wayne included countless scripture verses to back up his beliefs. This book taught me a great deal about the power of fear, forgiveness, counseling, healing, suffering, persecution, and much more. I also liked how Israel Wayne wasn’t afraid to cover the topics of money, government, and apologetics. This book will probe believers to dig deeper into scriptures and discover the answers found in God’s written Word.

I had never heard of Israel Wayne or his early book Questions God Asks until this book came up for review. I picked it up on a whim, thinking I would have tons of time to read (this always gets me, hence the 100s of books on shelves that will not be read, but I plan to :-) ). It is a pretty short but heady book covering the times that Jesus asks questions. Clear? Yeah not so much. I had no idea what this book was going to be. Was it going to be a devotional where Jesus asks questions of you? Was it hypothetical where it's kind of a What Would Jesus Do kind of thing for the 21st century? Well it was something so much more. Wayne's first purpose is to show that Jesus was in fact God in the flesh and His asking of questions was not demonstrating that He was lacking knowledge, but that the reason He asked questions was to get at the heart of the issue the person He had asked was dealing with. For example "Who do you say I am?" was getting at the apostle's view of who Jesus was. Jesus knew the answer, but asked it for the benefit of those he asked. Wayne's first point is clearly made as he demonstrates time and again that Jesus knew the answer, thus showing He was not lacking in knowledge. However, the next step for Wayne (and here is the genius part of this) is that he takes the question and posits it for us. He asks us a similar question to get at the heart of our heart issues surrounding Jesus. Awesome!

Each chapter is saturated with God's Word and full of many powerful quotes. The chapters are short and accessible but not filled with fluff. I enjoyed this book and plan on using portions of it with my students this year.

When I read the gospels, one of the things I most enjoy reading is how Jesus often rebuts his questioners with a stumbling question. Seeing how this book deals with questions that Jesus raises, I eagerly took it up and read it. And I have to say I come away from this book having benefitted much from what Israel Wayne has written.

Wayne first talks about one of the few paradoxes a christian has to live with: Is Jesus omniscience? He tackles the problem in a easily understandable manner and lists out why certain options are wrong or right. Next Wayne then goes on to the various questions that are raised by Jesus within the bible.

In the midst of tackling these questions, Wayne uses these questions to teach doctrinal lessons to the readers. For example in the chapter on John 8, where the adulterous woman was brought to Jesus. Wayne first tackles some of the historical knowledge of what usually happens when someone is accused of committing adultery. Next, he presents some problems within this situation, and how Jesus resolves the issue and forgiving the women. Yet, this forgiveness has to come at a great cost. He brings the readers to how Jesus is able to declare that our sins for forgiven — He took on our punishment. God has made him who knew no sin to be sin. Here he ends off beautifully with this question which I would like to quote to show you how he ends this chapter:
“Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we hear His words addressed to us: “Has no one condemned you?” We receive our answer in the words of Scripture.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death (Rom. 8:1–2; KJV).”

Wayne writes in a humorous and engaging manner while at the same time letting the readers interact with the words of Jesus in each of the chapter. I highly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend this book to anyone who is new to the christian faith to read it. Pastors who are interested to grow their youth groups in doctrinal studies can also use this book as a platform to discuss about the points raised in each chapter.

My Review:
As a new Christian you will find yourself asking all kinds of questions. Israel touches on a good many in Questions Jesus Asks. Jesus always met anyone including skeptics with His own set of questions when they approached Him. The author and I agree that Jesus questioning His critics specifically was rather amusing due to the fact that He could shut them down and leave them with nothing more to say. Jesus pulled no punches. He could dish out what was served to Him and I loved that tenacity that we learn from the Almighty. He wasn't afraid to look the devil in the eyes and what a great example He is for us.

The author takes many of the questions afforded Him and many more and he answers them along with scripture to give us a bigger knowledge base and hopefully more room to grow in our walk. Israel is able to put this information out there in clear terms for anyone to understand and he doesn't only use his opinions but others as well. Questions Jesus Asks is a very well rounded, well researched, authoritative read.

How would you answer if someone asked you "What are you seeking?" or "Why are you afraid?" Someone has, and His name is Jesus. He asked them of His early disciples, among many more questions, and the questions are for us today, as well. The topics covered in this book, all inspired by questions Jesus asked, are:

Christology
Virgin Birth
Family
Discipleship
Money
Healing
Counsiling
Fear
Demonology
Servanthood
Government
Forgiveness
Apologetics
Lordship
Prayer
Suffering
Love
Persecution
Hell
Resurrection

There are also two appendixes about the Hypostatic Union and Communicato Idiomatum.

Yes, this is a lot of ground to cover in one small book, but there is a good foundation here and some good thoughts to mull over. Israel Wayne writes about them in an approachable way, with a few stories from his life, Bible quotes, and bite-sized sections.

If you are looking for a book to further your arguments from the Scriptures and to provoke thought, then this is a helpful place to start.

What I Thought About the Book

I enjoyed reading this book and I learned a lot from it. It takes different questions Jesus asked during His time on earth and expounds on them. It's easy to tell that Israel did a lot of research while writing this book. I liked it when he would go into the Greek meanings behind the words because he did a great job in explaining them in a way that was easy to understand. Each chapter includes tons of Bible verses and quotes as well as a short personal story to introduce the topic (which were actually one of my favorite parts of the book... I like stories and it made the subject so much more relatable... ;).

Each of the chapters was engaging and easy to read; I especially appreciated the chapters about riches and prayer.
Since I was reading the book on my phone I'm not sure how long each chapter was, but they were short enough that I could breeze through them which made it a nice book to carry around and read when I had a few minutes to spare.

Conclusion

There was one or two things I didn't agree with 100%, but that's a given with pretty much any book I read. Overall I really appreciated the book and the message.
