This is the first book I read written by Portia MacIntosh. She is clearly a master of the narrative hook even if her prose doesn't quite hold up under a critical microscope. Her storytelling is her greatest asset here; she builds enough underlying curiosity into the plot mechanics to keep me turning pages. Her stylistic execution on the other hand feels jarringly superficial. The writing isn’t naturally magnetic and she relies far too heavily on shoehorning cliché life lessons into the dialogue. Instead of letting the characters organically grow through the messiness of their situation, MacIntosh forces them to deliver preachy, neatly packaged takeaways that disrupt the flow and feel entirely manufactured.
This is tailored for readers and listeners craving a breezy, low stakes reading palate cleanser. It hits the spot for fans of second-chance romances, European backdrops and readers who are willing to forgive clunky dialogue in exchange for a highly bingeable plot.
