Pyxis #3

Arise: The Conflux

Rate this book
When Quicksilver captures Harriet, Corinne and her union make a most unlikely rescue and an even more unexpected discovery: Harriet isn’t the enemy they’d thought she was. Zane and Mai’s arrival from Australia boosts the Tapestry union, but Corinne fears that Zane’s prophecy—that he and Corinne are destined to be together—will mean something terrible for Mason. As summer fades into autumn, Corinne’s Pyxis abilities weaken. By the time winter solstice arrives, Quicksilver will be at his most powerful, and Corinne will be at her weakest. She and her friends know that they can’t wait for Quicksilver to attack. They must strike first. But before they can act, Quicksilver delivers a disabling blow. Now Corinne will have to learn to harness the power of nature to defeat an ancient evil . . . but someone will have to pay the ultimate price.

Most of K.C. Neal's days are filled with some combination of writing, reading, gardening, working, and watching stuff on Netflix with her maltipoo, Oscar. She has an irrational fixation with L.A., and during occasional trips there she pretends her life is more glamorous than it really is ("Entourage" is her guilty pleasure). She likes to surf and hang out on sandy beaches, especially where drinks are served adorned with tiny umbrellas.

Arise: The Conflux brings the series to a heartfelt and action-heavy finale. Corinne has grown into her role as a Guardian, but her powers are waning just as Quicksilver-now fully revealed as the force of ultimate evil-reaches peak strength. The emotional core of the book is Corinne’s dilemma: can she fulfill her destiny and still protect the people she loves? Especially when fate may ask her to choose between them.

Zane and Mason form the ends of a love triangle that, while understated compared to other YA series, is still meaningful. Harriet’s twist adds depth, and the expansion of the Tapestry union makes the story feel larger and more consequential. There are still moments where exposition slows the pacing, but the emotional payoff is satisfying. The final conflict blends elemental magic, friendship, sacrifice, and self-discovery into a quietly powerful conclusion.

Like a snowball rolling down hill, thus book picked up speed and size and came to a show stopping conclusion. Yes, it's a teen book, but it was fun, with a driving storyline and truly likeable characters. Likely not something I'd read again, but it was an enjoyable ride!
