- Boys who are in the fourth or fifth grade use this handbook as Webelos Scouts; everything in the Webelos Scouting program is more challenging than what younger boys in the pack do - Webelos Scouts are still in Cub Scouting, taking part in Cub Scout pack meetings, events, and outings; however, the Webelos den also makes its own plans and enjoys many activities that the younger Cub Scouts don't get to do - Instead of working on achievements and electives as other boys in Cub Scouting do, Webelos Scouts work on activity badges and the Arrow of Light Award, which is a bridge to Boy Scouting - The Webelos Handbook has sections that cover the 20 activity badges, divided into five groups: Physical Skills, Mental Skills, Community, Technology, Outdoor - The Webelos Handbook also tells about rank advancement and special awards that Webelos Scouts can earn
I was briefly in the Scouts -- made it to Tenderfoot badge. Webelos is for ten- and eleven-year-olds, at least in this 1973 printing. One thing I recall from the scouts that I enjoyed was bandaging techniques. I recall learning to do an ankle bandage. However, that is not here. I was surprised how much the activities and challenges here are about intellectual development: art projects like sculpture and mobiles, music, and many science experiments. Among the experiments is the one of getting an egg so slide into a bottle through its narrow neck by air pressure changes, which I saw on The Colbert Report. Of course, every now and then there are things that feel very much dated and of their time, such as "Folk music is becoming more popular all the time..."
I thought after making it through my first 2 years as a cub scout mother that I maybe had a handle on things were supposed to work. I found out after reading through this book that I do not know what's up. I found this book to be thouroughly confusing and frustrating. I'm sure it will take me this entire 10th year of my son's life to understand it.
I'm a webelos mom and the den mother to our troop. I have this handbook almost memorized inside out and backwards. Great thoughts and helpful hints on making our meetings productive. Now... if I could just get the boys to read it. LOL!
This is the new requirements for Webelos. The old book was really outdated and needed a good revision. As all BSA books I found it very easy to read and understand. Great resource not only for scouts but really everyone.
I am an assistant den leader. I don't know much about scouting and so I was trying to read the book so that I could get some idea what I was doing. I think that it is still clear as mud!
