This comprehensive, gorgeously illustrated guide covers everything from the botanical basics of marijuana to the specifics of 170 exceptional strains.
Cannabis has been cultivated, consumed, and enjoyed by mankind since the beginning of recorded history. Today, its popularity is at an all-time high. A Field Guide to Marijuana is required reading for the new generation of curious and sophisticated pot smokers.
Filled with hyperdetailed photography of individual buds, this essential guide to marijuana is smart, practical, and exceedingly informative. The "Primer" section explores the culture of this complex flower and explains the botany that makes each strain unique. The "Buds" section describes the variations of lineage, flavor, and mental or physical high that define 170 different strains.
First of all, I love the bright green dyed edges and the cut out stenciled cover of this book. The beginning has a short but comprehensive section on science, botany, cannabis culture and etiquette. Following that, the bulk of the book is filled with beautifully detailed identification photos along with basic information on many different strains of marijuana. It’s a fabulous coffee table book to lazily flip through. I especially like that it has a wellspring of knowledge all in small sections so the reader is not forced to read huge chunks at once. It’s a perfect gift for the marijuana enthusiast in your life. 4 stars.
Disclaimer: I am totally new to weed and the scene. I have never bought any cannabis in my life. I never have visited a dispensary and I have no clue about cannabis strains. However, since cannabis has been legalized in my country, I have been looking into the medical use (joint pain, sleeping issues, muscle relaxation). I bought the book to learn about the different strains and use. The pictures are nice and clear and pretty, but the pictures are only of dried and cured bud, and to my untrained eye, they pretty much all look the same. I also grow myself on the balcony, and do not buy (neither from the street, nor dispensary, nor pharmacy), so the pictures were a bit wasted on me. The information on the different strains is good, and I learned something from it. Now I can join a conversation when colleagues or friends are talking about their own strains and harvest and I have at least some basics to know what they are talking about.
I originally spotted this in an Urban Outfitters for $35 and thought Screw that price But damn if these photos aren't incredible
It's near impossible to contain all the possible strains in this book, but it serves it's purpose.
A good intro to bud and it's strains, clear distinctions of Sativa vs Indica and the hybrids in between, and just a good read overall for the aspiring stoner
My goal was to git a brief introduction to what people currently through about more of the cultivation and science side of Marijuana. The strain compendium / field guide part of this was less interesting to me. The first 50 pages of so of this book fulfilled my need. Probably due to the field guide being so picture heavy the intro material might have been somewhat overly glossily laid out.
Picture book with a few bits of quick, good info on great strains. Left Out Purple Haze Grape God,Blissful Wizard,Garlic Breath,Triangle Kush, But included SFV-OG, MAUI WOWIE,Durban Poison, Kosher Kush, Jack Herer, Grandaddy Purple,Pink Cookies, Panama Red, Columbian Gold,Blue Dream. Pleasurable Peruse, indeed. Enjoy!
Primarily a great encyclopedia of the myriad strains, I especially enjoyed the introductory portion which detailed the botanical elements and characteristics of the plant itself. A good resource for the new, seasoned smoker, or anyone just curious to learn more about cannabis.
This is a gorgeous book, truly a feast for the eyes.
There is a short overview at the beginning that gives some historical context for cannabis and its use. I found the section on landraces (ancient cannabis plants that occur naturally and adapt to particular regions) especially interesting.
Strains are listed alphabetically, each with a beautiful, magnified photo of a bud, along with a description of the strain, lineage, characteristics, effects, and top medical uses. Kind of like a wine-tasting guide, but for pot.
I'm not much of a smoker, so I have very little personal experience to draw upon, but I was intrigued by many of these strains and am looking forward to experimenting.
I received this book through Goodreads First Reads.
First off, this is a gorgeous book as object. The cover is really interesting, including die-cut lettering and a nice transparent cover (perhaps to preserve the book?), and the book is filled with high quality, high resolution photos.
The book's main project seems to be to legitimize the field of marijuana consumption, as this book is written much like a first timer's guide to wine and beer. Different strains are flavor and effect profiled, and full page photographs accompany each description. The book is a little silly at times--complete with "100 Bona Fide Cannabis Terms" (...what...)--but overall is a nice beginning to legitimizing this emerging field.
