I had hopes the second book would at least improve over the first. Despite the appearance of the Atomic Knights. I couldn't have been more wrong. This time the colorist joined in with the obvious not caring about story, details or what could have been the final appearance of one of the oldest DC teams and my favorite. I've read bad Legion stories in the 40+ years I've been collecting and reading them but this one takes the cake. Those five star reviews floating around where either assisted by some kind of recreational substance or they never even bothered reading the material before rating it.
Many years ago, Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes was one of the mainstays of the DC Comic universe; they were stories centered around the teenage version of Superman's adventures in the 25th Century. One of the best things about DC's Convergence event is that it gives some long out of sight characters a chance to come back and have one more moment in the spotlight. As in all Convergence titles, heroes from different eras are forced to battle each other for survival after their cities were abducted by Brainiac. Thus widely varied versions of Gotham and Metropolis (along with other DC universe locales) have spent a year living under a dome until the day comes when they are told to go at it Battle Royale style. In these two issues, written by Stuart Moore and drawn by Gus Storms and Peter Gross respectively, Superboy and the future heroes are thrown into battle against the Atomic Knights of Durvale, a group of post apocalyptic characters first seen in the early 60's. The hook of the story is that two groups of essentially decent heroes must fight each other to the death if their community is to survive. Some readers might feel that the final resolution pulls its punches, but I was okay with it since it was true to the characters. And there were some nice touches to the story like having Colossal Boy permanently stuck at 12 feet tall because Brainac's dome depowered all the super humans; Superboy realizing that after a year under the dome and far from home, he's no longer a "boy" and Lighting Lass is looking pretty good; Brainac 5 is still insufferable; Wildfire just winks out of existence when the dome fell because he was pure energy; while I was not very familiar with the Atomic Knights, I will say their giant Dalmatians sure are cute. Really enjoyed this part of the Convergence story line because it brought back some old favorites from years gone by, but I am disappointed that DC doesn't seem to have any plans for this version of Superboy and the Legion post Convergence.
