শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায় আদ্যন্ত জীবন-রহস্যের পূজারি। অদ্ভুত চাপা উত্তেজনা নিয়ে শীর্ষেন্দুর রহস্যকাহিনি পাঠকের কাছে এক অনন্য অভিজ্ঞতা। শান্ত, গভীর পর্যবেক্ষণ সূত্রেই তিনি অন্তর্ভেদী। রহস্যের সমাধান-মাত্র কাহিনি ফুরিয়ে যায় না, বরং স্থায়ী ছাপ ফেলে যায় মনে। অধিকাংশ রহস্যকাহিনিতে আছে শবর। শবর দাশগুপ্ত লালবাজারের গোয়েন্দা। বাইরে থেকে খানিকটা রোবট, খানিকটা পাথর, কিন্তু ভেতরে-ভেতরে এক সংবেদনশীল মানুষ। জীবিকার চরিত্র অনুযায়ী সে দাপুটে, কিন্তু মানবচরিত্র ঘেঁটে ঘেঁটে এক নির্বিকার দার্শনিকও। শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায়ের ‘রহস্য সমগ্র’ গ্রন্থে শবরের সবগুলি কাহিনির সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়েছে আরোও কয়েকটি আকর্ষণীয় থ্রিলার। বিকেলের মৃত্যু, কাপুরুষ, ঋণ, আলোয় ছায়ায়, সিঁড়ি ভেঙে ভেঙে, প্রজাপতির মৃত্যু ও পুনর্জন্ম, কালো বেড়াল সাদা বেড়াল, পদক্ষেপ, রূপ, মারীচ, ঈগলের চোখ – প্রতিটি আখ্যানে অপরাধের কালোর পাশে আলো হয়ে আছে পবিত্র ভালবাসার বোধ।

শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায় একজন ভারতীয় বাঙালি সাহিত্যিক।

তিনি ব্রিটিশ ভারতের বেঙ্গল প্রেসিডেন্সির অন্তর্গত ময়মনসিংহে (বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশের অংশ) জন্মগ্রহণ করেন—যেখানে তাঁর জীবনের প্রথম এগারো বছর কাটে। ভারত বিভাজনের সময় তাঁর পরিবার কলকাতা চলে আসে। এই সময় রেলওয়েতে চাকুরিরত পিতার সঙ্গে তিনি অসম, পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ও বিহারের বিভিন্ন স্থানে তাঁর জীবন অতিবাহিত করেন। তিনি কোচবিহারের ভিক্টোরিয়া কলেজ থেকে মাধ্যমিক শিক্ষা সম্পন্ন করেন। পরে কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে বাংলায় স্নাতকোত্তর ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন। শীর্ষেন্দু একজন বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষক হিসেবে তাঁর কর্মজীবন শুরু করেন। বর্তমানে তিনি আনন্দবাজার পত্রিকা ও দেশ পত্রিকার সঙ্গে জড়িত।

তাঁর প্রথম গল্প জলতরঙ্গ শিরোনামে ১৯৫৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে দেশ পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত হয়। সাত বছর পরে সেই একই পত্রিকার পূজাবার্ষিকীতে তাঁর প্রথম উপন্যাস ঘুণ পোকা প্রকাশিত হয়। ছোটদের জন্য লেখা তাঁর প্রথম উপন্যাসের নাম মনোজদের অদ্ভুত বাড়ি।

I am giving the book a rating of 3.5!

The book title literally translates to Mystery Collection – Shabar and Other Mystery Stories. The book has been entitled as a mystery collection; however, a few stories are thrillers and not mystery.

The book has been written by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, an Indian author who writes in the Bengali language. As a child, I had devoured a lot of his novels which were published in children’s magazines before being printed as books. I had always associated with books with fun and childhood innocence - his novels were comic adventures populated by eccentric people, friendly ghosts, supernatural objects and at times had elements of sci-fi.

This book, however, contains stories that have dark and adult themes. Most of the stories feature police detective Shabar, and there are a few standalone thrillers.

Before reading this book I had watched a movie based on one of the Shabar stories included here. The fact that the movie was a book adaptation of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay had escaped my notice. The movie was decent but I liked the Shabar in the pages of this book more than the character on the screen.

Shabar Dasgupata is a police detective based in the city of Kolkata in India. The author says that when he was requested to write mystery stories he thought of creating a police detective because private detectives in the real world don’t investigate murder and are not allowed to shoot people just like that.

Shabar as a character is difficult to relate to. Mukhopadhyay describes his creation as person who comes across as “part-robot part-stone” - he never loses his cool, is always unfazed. He is not physically imposing but is very strong and fearless. Beneath this façade of an unemotional man there is a very sensitive soul. He is compassionate, helpful and even feels sorry for some culprits. Shabar takes inspiration from the philosophy and wisdom enshrined in the Bhagwat Geeta. Oh! He has no bad habits – a saint! Shabar solves his cases by talking to the people involved and connecting the dots.

The Shabar stories revolve around dark themes such as human perversion, illicit relationships, betrayal, greed, jealousy – but at the same time, the writer has tried to infuse the stories with positive human qualities such as love, compassion and forgiveness.

There are three standalone thrillers in this connection – two of them are pretty pulp fiction-ish with the usual action, underworld, professional assassins, spies, beautiful women etc. The remaining one is, however, much better. It is about an agent of the Indian government who neutralizes threats to our country. I liked the way the story began – descriptions of our protagonist’s simple life in a village with his poor but loving family. The loneliness of his chosen path, the constant travelling and danger, the pain of betrayal – all have been nicely depicted by the writer. Not a great piece of work but not too bad.

The Shabar stories were the real deal in this book. If you read Bengali mystery stories and comfortable with Shabar and the themes of the stories, then you might want to give this book a try.

বিকেলের মৃত্যু(৩/৫) -একসময় পড়ে বেশ ভালো লেগেছিলো।
কাপুরুষ (৩.৫/৫)-গল্পটা বেশ জোরালো কিন্তু রোমাঞ্চ গল্প নয়।
ঋণ(৪/৫)- শবর সিরিজের সেরা বই।
আলোয় ছায়ায়(৩/৫) -একবার পড়ার জন্য ঠিক আছে।
সিঁড়ি ভেঙে ভেঙে(৩.৫/৫) -অন্যরকম রহস্য গল্প,শেষটা মনে রাখার মতো।
প্রজাপতির মৃত্যু ও পুনর্জন্ম (৩/৫) -গোয়েন্দা গল্প হিসেবে মিষ্টির পরিমাণ অত্যন্ত বেশি।
পদক্ষেপ(২/৫)-সময়ের অপচয়।
রূপ(২/৫) -সময়ের অপচয়।
মারীচ(৩/৫) -মোটামুটি ভালো।
ঈগলের চোখ(৩/৫)- বইয়ের চাইতে সিনেমা বেশি ভালো লেগেছে।
পুরো বইয়ের মধ্যে একমাত্র "ঋণ" উপন্যাসটিকেই অবশ্যপাঠ্য গোছের মনে হলো।

An excellent work by Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay. I really liked the stories special Detective shobor das gupto.The style he investigate ,the emotion he felt about the criminal.
Thanks to Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay to show the emotion of criminal .their reason for crime and the psychological thought . It's really a good read.

শীর্ষেন্দু এককালে আমার সবচেয়ে প্রিয় লেখক ছিলেন। পরে একসময় মনে হয়েছে তার ব্যক্তিগত আদর্শিক কিছু বিষয় তিনি তার লেখার মধ্যে ঢুকিয়ে দেন, এটা দোষ কি না জানি না। তবে সেই চিন্তাভাবনাগুলো আমার সাথে মেলে না বলেই তাকে পছন্দের মাপটাতে কিছু বিয়োগের খাতায় চলে গেছে। তারপরও তিনি এখনও আমার প্রিয় লেখকদের একজন।

মোট ১১ টি লেখা নিয়ে এই বই। যখন প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল সেই পর্যন্ত লেখা সব শবর কাহিনীগুলো তো আছেই, সাথে আছে আরও তিনটি রহস্য বা থ্রিলার কাহিনী। সে দিক দিয়ে এই বইটি লোভনীয়। শীর্ষেন্দুর একটি তত্ত্বের সাথে আমি একমত, প্রাইভেট ডিটেকটিভদের গোয়েন্দা কাহিনী পড়তে যতোই আকর্ষণীয় লাগুক, একজন বেসরকারী স্বাধীন গোয়েন্দার পক্ষে বড় বড় রহস্য, খুনের মামলার তদন্ত করাটা খুব একটা বাস্তবসম্মত না। তাই শীর্ষেন্দু বেছে নিয়েছেন প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক গোয়েন্দাকে। তার শবর দাশগুপ্ত চরিত্রটি লালবাজারের গোয়েন্দা, একজন সুপারকপ। খুব আকর্ষণীয়, চোখে পড়ার মতো চেহারা তার নেই, তবু চোখ দুটো অসাধারণ। যেখানে অপরাধ প্রায় প্রমাণিত সেখানেও সামান্য একটু খটকা থেকে শবর নিরপরাধ ব্যক্তিকে শাস্তির হাত থেকে বাঁচাতে সর্বশক্তি দিয়ে চেষ্টা করেন এবং অবশ্যই সফল হোন। শবর কাহিনীতে শুধু যে শবরই প্রধান চরিত্র তা না, আরও কিছু প্রধান চরিত্র থাকে যারা তদন্তের সাথে কোন না কোনভাবে জড়িয়ে যান। প্রেম, বিচ্ছেদ, পরকীয়া সবই আছে কাহিনীগুলোতে এবং প্রায়শই শুভ সমাপ্তি।

প্রথম উপন্যাস বিকেলের মৃত্যুতে অবশ্য শবর নেই, নেই কোন গোয়েন্দা চরিত্রই। রয়েছেন পাঁচ ফুট সাড়ে পাঁচ ইঞ্চির কালো রোগা চেহারার ববি রায়। চেহারা এমন হলে কি হবে ববি রায় একজন সুপার হিউম্যান বিশেষ। একদিকে তিনি যেমন টেক জিনিয়াস তেমনি ক্যারাটের ব্ল্যাক বেল্ট। জেন মার্শাল আর্টে খুবই দক্ষ ববি রায় একজন মেল শভেনিস্ট। প্রায় অসম্ভব পর্যায় থেকে তিনি বেঁচে ফিরে আসেন, ভালোবাসা হয় সেক্রেটারী লীনার সাথে। এখানে ববি রায়ই মূল এবং একমাত্র নায়ক। কালো বেড়াল, সাদা বেড়ালের এর নায়ক গোপীনাথ এবং সুধাকর দত্ত দুজনই। ভিকিজ মব এর প্যারিস শাখা বা ইউরোপীয় প্রধান এস. দাতা আর ইন্টারপোলের এজেন্ট একই মানুষ। ইনিও একজন সুপার হিউম্যান।
কালো বেড়াল, সাদা বেড়ালও খুবই গতিশীল একটি উপন্যাস, তবে সুধাকর দত্তকে নিয়ে শীর্ষেন্দু আর লেখেন নি। কাপুরুষ উপন্যাসের নায়ক বিশ্বরূপ সেন একজন স্পেশাল পুলিশ গোয়েন্দা। মেলাঙ্কলিক এই গোয়েন্দা চরিত্রটিই এই উপন্যাসের নায়ক, একে নিয়েও লেখক আর লেখেন নি।

শবরের লেখাগুলোর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে ভালো লেগেছে ঋণ, এই উপন্যাস নিয়ে সিনেমাও হয়েছে।ঈগলের চোখ উপন্যাসটিও ভালো লেগেছে। তবে শীর্ষেন্দুর যেটা নিজস্বতা অসম বয়েসী মানে অল্পবয়েসী নারীর সাথে বেশি বয়সের পুরুষের প্রেম প্রায় অনেকগুলো লেখাতেই আছে। বারবারই এসেছে ডিভোর্সের পরও পুনরায় মিলনের আকাঙ্খাও যার সবগুলো অবশ্য সফল হয় নি। এই বইয়ের বেশিরভাগ লেখাই আমার আগের পড়া, তবু আবারও পড়তে মন্দ লাগে নি। মোটামুটি অন্য বাঙালি লেখকদের চেয়ে ভিন্ন ধাচের রহস্য কাহিনীগুলোর কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্রগুলো প্রায়ই উচ্চবিত্ত এবং সমাজের উঁচু তলার বাসিন্দা। অপরাধ কাহিনীগুলো টানা পড়েছি বলেই মন একটু বিকল হয়ে গিয়েছিলো, এমন অপরাধ সত্যিই নিশ্চয়ই ঘটে। তবু মনটা কেমন যেন বিষণ্ণ করে দেয় এসব কাহিনীগুলো। থ্রিলার কাহিনী যাদের ভালো লাগে বইটা তাদের ভালো লাগবে আশা করি।

আগে থেকে তিনটে উপন্যাস পড়া ছিলো। এর মাঝে একটি ছিলো এবার শবর। সম্ভবত শীর্ষেন্দুর লেখা সেরা রহস্যোপন্যাস। চমৎকার ক্লাইম্যাক্স। সিনেমাটিও বেশ লেগেছিলো।
তাই শবর সিরিজের বাকি গল্পগুলো পড়তেই বই টা কিনেছিলাম। লেখকের লেখাতে গভীরতার খানিকটা অভাব। যেই ডুব দিতে যাই, অমনি তলায় পৌছে যাই।
তাই খানিকটা হতাশ। সেরা���া পড়ে তারপর বাকিগুলো পড়লে যা হয় আর কি। এমনিতে বইটা চমৎকার। কয়েকটা দিন ভালোই আনন্দ দিয়েছে।

Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay is one of the gem among contemporary writers in Bengali Literature. There is a psychological angle in each of his murder mystery stories, which is quite mature and not understandable by kids. His murder mystery stories are only for adults. Each and every story has a different colour. There is a particular message the writer wants to convey: Beside the blackness of every so-called crime is the light of holy love.

Only one disappointment : The publication house hasn't yet added 'Tirandaj' story of Shobor Dasgupta series yet.

An awesome suspense collection from sirsendu. I just come to know that sabar is one of his best characters and all stories are very thrilling. I bengali this type of thriller is very rear. Thanks to Sirsendu Mukherjee.

কিছু গল্প খুব ভালো ধরনের ভালো। কিছু গল্প বোরিং।তবে শীর্ষেন্দু'র লেখাতে পাঠক ধরে রাখার যে আকর্ষণ, তা প্রতিটি গল্পে ছিল।

থ্রিলার এর মধ্যে সব থেকে ভালো লেগেছে 'কালো বেড়াল, সাদা বেড়াল'।
শবর এর মধ্যে 'ঋণ'।

অসম্ভব ভালো লাগার একটি বই। প্রিয় গল্প বেশ কয়েকটাই। তবে 'প্রজাপতির মৃত্যু ও পুনর্জন্ম ' আর ' সাদা বিড়াল, কালো বিড়াল' আলাদাভাবে মনে দাগ কেটেছিল।
