Trivium

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with so little world-building, but THIS IS MY PERFECT VERSION OF FANTASY. It’s not too long, not too heavy, not too complicated. I was considering taking off a star because I know there are people who would feel like something is missing because of that, but I’M GIVING IT THE RATING, AND I LOVED IT!
Multiple POVs can sometimes intimidate me, and this time it also took me a few chapters to get used to them and learn which girl was which, but it was so cool to read about how each of them had such completely different experiences in the same place! Also, a separate + point for the chapter lengths. They were short, and we moved through the story so quickly.
I genuinely recommend this book, and I’d even happily buy a physical copy just to have it sitting on my shelf as a keepsake.

This was such a quick fun read. Very different from some other fantasy books I've read.
This is a very fast paced and character-focused book. I enjoyed the multiple POV's (Zeina was my favourite), though I think they would have benefitted from more backstory and for the reader to have an insight into their thoughts and feelings to understand the character's motives more.
The magical creatures are one of my favourite parts of the story, they are described very vividly and really added to the world building! I'm looking forward to learning more about them in the second book.
Although I wished this book delved a little deeper (some of the twists fell a little bit flat for me because they were rushed), I still really enjoyed this one and I'm curious to see how the story develops in the next book in the series.

Walking into the whimsical world of Trivium was a really fun and enjoyable experience that swept me up and kept my eyes glued to the page and my cheeks heating. You really were transported to this fanatastical world, hanging on each line like you'd get lost in the city streets of Jarrah if you didn't get to the next chapter. The characters in this books were so unique and distinct! Each point of view felt like truly seeing out a different lense. Every character had such depth and intrigue ... but I have to say Zeina was my favorite 😚 a real charmer some would say.

Trivium was an enjoyable and immersive read that left me curious to see where the story goes next.
One of my favourite aspects was the multiple POVs. Being able to experience the story through different characters' perspectives added depth and gave me a broader understanding of what was happening within the world.
The creatures were a definite highlight for me. Jenna Ruby's descriptions brought them to life, and I loved the creativity behind them. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing what new creatures and elements are introduced in the second book.
The world-building was another strong point. I felt like I could really step into the setting, with descriptions that allowed me to almost smell and taste the world around the characters. Some character descriptions were especially vivid, while others felt a little less developed for me.
I also really enjoyed the three FMCs. Each brought something different to the story, and I found myself invested in their individual journeys.
One aspect that did occasionally pull me out of the story was the dialogue. Although the characters are written as being around 24, some of their conversations and interactions felt younger to me, more in line with how I would expect 17–18-year-old characters to speak. This gave the story more of a YA feel for me, despite the characters stated ages.
That said, I found Trivium to be a comfortable, engaging read that drew me into its world and left me wanting to continue the journey. And I must mention that unexpected twist — I genuinely didn't see that coming!
Overall, Trivium is a promising start to what looks like an intriguing series, and I'm definitely curious to see what awaits in book two.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The world building wasn't overly complicated, but still incredibly immersive and I really felt like I was there when I was reading.
I loved our three main characters, and I enjoyed the multiple POV aspect, I really felt like we got to know them all so well. The way their stories intertwined, and connected was captivating, and I found myself wanting to read on to find out more about them. The plot, pacing and twists were all brilliantly done, and I cannot wait for book 2 in this series!

Reading this was refreshing. A bit of a different pace than I'm used too, and light on world details but heavy on character development. Which makes you really feel for everyone and you definitely pick favourites.
This book had the briefest of chapters and I definitely had to keep double checking which POV I was reading.
But the fast pace grows on you.
The small world building focuses on one specific area during part of the story, and I do feel like that is actually better.
You aren't left wondering because we just don't know where the story is going just yet.
The creatures are also great, the different species, how it's all interconnected with how humans live.
A good intro for a YA reader wanting to get into fantasy heroines.

3.5⭐️ ARC Review✨️
This was a book I happened upon on Instagram and instantly wanted to be apart of it! I saw pretty cover art with a description of a fantasy world, magical elements, 3 female POVs, and dark secrets to uncover about the academy. How could you not be interested if you love fantasy with a dash of romance?!
Trivium was a very fast paced fantasy with interconnected storylines among your 3 main characters: Loveleena, Ahmina and Ziena. I was hooked pretty fast and instantly needed to know more about each character and what was bringing them into this story. Each is from a different upbringing with different motivations and drive. The character that I feel was the most well rounded and with the best character development was Ziena. From begining to end my heart was there right beside her!
I appreciated a new take on creating a magical world and hope Jenna Ruby dives in even deeper for book 2. Some moments/big reveals were predictable, but this was the book where I definitely said "okay, just one more chapter."
If you love fantasy, enjoy magic academy settings, and are intrigued by new creatures, this is probably a good book for you!!

Have you ever had a “book over”??? Welp, this book had me from the start and I had to just keep reading because I was on the edge of my seat, reading as fast as I could because this plot is 🔥🔥
3 FMCs with lots of secrets, their own agendas, and they are all fierce in their own ways. The plot twists throughout keep you on your toes and it isn’t just another romantasy that is the FMC swooning over male characters. There is depth, description, and a strong plot. If you are looking for spicy, this book isn’t it. IN ALL THE RIGHT WAYS! There is a strong slow burn so there is romance but it isn’t the whole story.

ARC Review
I really enjoyed this. Trivium throws you straight into its world, but one of its biggest strengths is how carefully that world is then allowed to unfold. The creatures, Defenders, different specialities, Academy and layers of society are introduced gradually and naturally, without ever feeling like you’re wading through huge amounts of information just to understand what is happening.
The three different perspectives worked particularly well for this. Each woman experiences the world from a completely different position, and I loved seeing those differences slowly begin to overlap. My feelings towards the characters changed considerably as the story progressed too. There were points where I was far more invested in some perspectives than others, but I actually appreciated that their characters weren’t static. People I initially disliked surprised me, while others exposed sides of themselves that frustrated me enormously.
Zeina was probably the standout for me. Her compassion, particularly in the way she interacts with the creatures and refuses to see them simply as things that should be killed, was lovely. I also became really invested in Ahmina and everything happening around her. There are some darker elements to her storyline around power, vulnerability and the consequences of having very little security that added another layer to the Academy setting.
And then there’s Lennox, who might have been my biggest character surprise. I had him completely pegged at the beginning, only for that first impression to be gradually dismantled. I loved watching the softer, more protective side of him emerge, and his relationship with Ahmina became one of my favourite parts.
The mystery running underneath everything kept me constantly theorising. There are questions around the creatures, the Academy, missing people and what we’re being told about this world that gradually begin to intertwine. I managed to predict part of one of the bigger reveals quite early, but definitely didn’t get the whole thing, which made the eventual payoff even better.
The final section really pulled everything together for me. Secrets were answered only to uncover more secrets, and there was some great dramatic irony where we knew things that certain characters didn’t yet know. Importantly, it didn’t feel like answers were being withheld simply because this is the first book in a series. There was enough payoff to make this story satisfying while leaving some genuinely interesting questions open.
By the end, I wasn’t just curious about what happens next. I actively wanted another book, which is exactly what I want from the beginning of a fantasy series.

A strong start. The first 20% delivers a captivating hook, introducing three female leads from different backgrounds as they arrive at a secretive magic academy. The initial premise and the looming threat of scary creatures beyond the wall set up a fantastic foundation with a lot of potential.
As the story progressed, the execution didn't quite maintain that initial momentum. While the book is filled with high-concept ideas, many felt crammed in and glossed over rather than given the room to evolve. The pacing felt a bit uneven. Major reveals and pivotal moments were accepted almost instantly with little weight, while conversations and realizations tended to repeat but not add anything new. Additionally, the external threat beyond the wall felt more like a background excuse for the academy's existence rather than one of the main reasons as I felt it was introduced as.
From a character standpoint, despite the main cast being 24, their voices and choices often read significantly younger. I personally thought they were 15/16. The romantic dynamics also felt set up a bit too easily from the start, coming across as somewhat forced rather than naturally built through chemistry and tension.
Overall, Trivium has a great core concept and an ambitious world, but I personally disconnected from the characters and storyline as the book went on; however I think there is a lot that will evolve in the books to come that I would like to explore.

Wow. That was a journey.
Thank you Jenna Ruby for my first ARC. I have loved the opportunity to read your work. I adore the cover of your book. I also really enjoyed this book. The plot twists in this story were amazing. The amount of times I gasps or was shaking by the plot twists is unbelievable. I loved Ahmina, Zeina, Loveleena. My favourite character is Ahmina because she is so relatable to girls who strive to be the best. Loveleena grew on me as the story went on. I loved the story.
I also love how well Jenna Ruby set the story. It was cleverly thought through and it was amazing that she was able to build such an amazing world. I adored the romance with Ahmina and Lennox. I also loved the story of her best friend messing especially the fact you wouldn’t have guessed what happened. However, I felt there were times when I wanted to see more of Loveleena’s family in terms of what was going on. I also didn’t understand Zeina storyline because I felt that it wouldn’t work that way in real life.
I did love Zeina’s and how she has all the aspects of a great character. Jenna Ruby is such a talented writer and I believe she is a name to remember. I would love to see a film or tv adaptation of this one day because I believe I would binge watch this as a show. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good fantasy. However, I do believe this book is more suited to those who love Shadowhunters and Powerless. I can’t wait for any projects Jenna Ruby does in the future.

I really enjoyed this book! I believe it’s YA because it included very sweet depictions of platonic, familial and romantic love, with mild depictions of lust, betrayal — and even violence. This book did not have spice (which is a preference) and had the lovely amount of yearning.
I quite enjoyed each reveal and the story’s pace. I found myself not wanting to put the book down in order to find out what would happen next. Ruby did an excellent job with a unique story that has so much potential for more novels within the series! I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2!

One of the best book dedications I’ve ever read. I was sucked in from page one, and the opening sentences of the prologue were so comical which I loved. So many stories start off so heavy and I loved that the heavy and that came after I was locked in as a reader. Such a strong voice throughout, and an easy read. (Not in a childish way, but because the voice is so clear) Ahmina’s name is so unique and something I’d never heard before, same with so many of the other characters (Jarrah, Zeina, Muaka, etc.) I’m not sure if the author made them up or if they are old names, but it was refreshing to see something new. This entire story was so brilliant and unique and I loved that the world building was interesting but not overdone and too hard to keep up with!

as most fantasy books, the first chapters felt a little slow because of having to explain everything that's going on, but i can't decide if after that the plot went faster or stayed slow
loveleena was kind of... just there even when the plot (kind of) was supposed to be working around her need to find park. she was impulsive and a little rude for no reason at times, and didn't actually feel connected to her so 🫤 i hope the next book can give me another perspective of her
ahmina was better handled than loveleena but still not quite there for me? her romance subplot with lennox was cute but it was too fast - went from "i'm curious about this guy" to "i love you you're the main reason i keep going" because yeah, he helped her a lot yet at some point it started to feel as if she was trying to do better just to get his approval ;; maybe that was just me though
zeina was just chef kiss ⭐ her whole character gives me "i saw. i came. i conquered." vibes and i love her for that!! she was interesting without trying and i enjoyed her chapters very much jjj she's really that girl

Trivium is such a fast, easy read, I was genuinely invested in the story and definitely didn’t want to put it down 😍
The characters all felt distinct, and Zeina was easily my favourite. There were some twists that genuinely caught me off guard. I thought I had a decent idea of where certain things were going, only for the story to surprise me. The ending in particular was a great way to lead on to book 2 and left me excited to see where the story goes next!
There’s a few things I wanted more from, sometimes it could feel like the story moved too quickly. I normally love fast pacing and short chapters, and the short chapters were definitely a bonus here, but there were moments where a chapter would end and I’d find myself thinking, wait… a little more? 😂 some more time to sit with certain revelations, relationships and character moments would’ve been a bonus!
And with romance that isn’t particularly spicy, I usually look for that intense yearning and tension to make up for it, and I just didn’t quite get that here. But also the romance is definitely the sub plot to the story.
I wanted more showing and less telling. Maybe book 2 we will be given a little more story building to try work some twists out next time.

Ahmina’s chapters in particular felt noticeably different sometimes, and knowing what she was going through, I started to wonder if the lack of clarity and depth was part of the point like experiencing her impaired state through her perspective rather than simply being told that the poisoning was affecting her. I think that could be a really clever piece of writing, and I’m interested to see how her character develops now that she is no longer in that state of mind.
What I really loved was how different the premise feels. By the end of the book I am so invested in this world, and honestly i think it’s a great shake up to some of the more familiar fantasy plots. I’m also genuinely excited for the next book, especially after that ending. A really entertaining start to the series, with plenty of potential for the characters and relationships to develop even further in book two. First, I want to start by giving a huge thank you to Jenna Ruby for giving me an ARC of Trivium. I'm honored and really grateful!
I found the book after stumbling across it on instagram. The storyline immediately caught my interest, and I always love multiple POVs. The cover was also stunning, I loved the vibrant colours and the design. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me and I ended up DNFing it at 56%. I don’t need in-depth world building but I do need in-depth character development and unfortunately I didn’t connect with any of the characters. At first I was really intrigued by Loveleena's storyline and her determination to find her best friend. However, the first few chapters moved so fast I didn’t have time to absorb what was happening or empathize with her. The ball her family throws, which ends up being a surprise engagement party, goes by so quickly that I never get the opportunity to feel her discomfort or understand her desire to not live this life, a desire that leads her to going to the elite defenders academy to find information on Parks disappearance. Besides a few comments about why she doesn’t want to marry we aren’t shown. With Ahmina we got a little more information and I did like her growing relationship with Lennox but once again I wish I got more!

There was a scene where Ahmina is attacked by a poisonous snake and Lennox sucks the venom out of her! But it’s completely passed over and only mentioned briefly when Ahmina eventually wakes up.

Zeina is the character I connected with and cared about the least. Her storyline didn’t make much sense to me and I struggled to understand how it would work in real life. I know this is fantasy but there are certain aspects to the story that have to seem plausible, that I have to believe in.

Jenna Ruby delivers a fun, unique, and whimsical fantasy read!
Ruby's story centers on the POVs of three women attending a magical academy -- one from a noble family, one hoping to escape the streets where she lives, and one leaving the orphanage that raised her. Ruby does a wonderful job of balancing these three perspectives and giving each FMC her own history, agenda, and perspective about the school, their teachers and classmates, and their own experiences. I found that their different storylines helped keep the story moving really quickly. I also enjoyed both their separate stories -- one girl struggling to survive the school, one hoping to find a missing friend, and one is hoping to remain invisible -- with the overarching story where their worlds collide.
Jenna's story does not not really hang on intense world building, but lets the world unfold overtime for the reader. The characters drive this story along and do a good job of immersing the readers in their world. The creatures, the school, and the "wall" beyond Jarrah serve as a backdrop for mysterious happenings, but also a much larger plot of history and mystery.
I am excited to see where she takes this adventurous and whimsical story next. If you are looking for a refreshing, lighter romantasy that will give you action, adventure, fun characters, and a hint of romance -- add this one to your list!

Thank you, Jenna Ruby, for giving me the opportunity to read this arc. Trivium is a breath of fresh air. There were suspenseful , mysterious moments and so many secrets. While reading this book, i felt the feeling of love, lust, longing, grief, determination, and revenge. I loved how you see each of the girl's point of view and how they lived before entering the academy. Each of the girls has a different background and upbringing. I loved how different their personalities were. A world where creatures have magic and humans don't. You see how the girls thrive to survive in an academy where the only way out is to fail or perish. There determination to succeed and pursue their dreams. Where it's entering the gates by accident, because she wants a better life and rash last minute decision to find her best friend. The secrets draw you in and blow your mind. I couldn't put this book down. It kept me wanting to know more, and I can't wait for the next book because this journey is not over for these girls. Give this book a read. You won't be disappointed. Trivium was well written. I couldn't get enough. It's a perfect fantasy world you can't miss. This is the first book I have read from this author, and it blew me away. It's absolutely amazing.

I liked my time with Trivium. I didn’t love my time with Trivium. There are a lot of positives. The concept is interesting. I loved following the three FMCs to have a better idea of the various plot points. There is diversity and representation. Once I got into the story, it made for a fast read. The FMCs had varying struggles and personalities that made it interesting to step into each perspective.
I did initially struggle to get into the story because I didn’t feel like I had an understanding of the physical space these characters are existing in. There is a city with a big stone wall surrounded by forest and I know that the academy is like a castle, but I don’t know how large the city is, how it is set up, are there entry point for the Defenders to enter and exit from, what are buildings like, how do people get around or do they just walk everywhere because it is a small city? One of the many things I love about fantasy is the ability to live in the world of an author, but I did struggle to immerse myself in the world because I couldn’t picture the world.
All-in-all, I am intrigued. I will be interested in continuing the story when the second book comes out.

Overall, it's a very enjoyable read with its quick pace, snappy dialogue, and distinct characters. It's got an intriguing, whimsical world with a unique magic system and fun little creatures (I need more of them!!!). I loved the multiple POV narration! I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it was in first-person, because the plot twists would have landed more effectively in my opinion. Oh, yes. SO MANY PLOT TWISTS. The world and the story is quite dense, but the book presents it lightly which works great for the YA genre it belongs to. I would have loved a bit more backstory to strengthen the weight of the unique magic system and the reveal for some of these twists. Most of the characters are well defined, but their individual pasts are kept vague, making some of their intentions and actions unclear to me. But, in general, the characters are super fun and chaotic and easily my favorite part about this book.

I found the world of Trivium, and its magical creatures, absolutely enchanting. Jenna Ruby’s descriptions of Jarrah and the Academy are incredibly vivid and magical. From the get go, I felt as though I was walking alongside the three FMC’s. Each has a completely unique personality and voice. Multiple side characters were also full realized and felt almost like MC’s themselves. Readers will enjoy the adorable romance, and a sprinkle of yearning, that adds to the depth of the story, without being the main focal point of the plot.
The plethora of mystical creatures in Trivium were by far my favourite aspect of the book. They were incredibly unique and vividly described. I greatly enjoyed the animal encounters and untangling how they were interwoven with the hidden secrets and ancient magic.
Overall I found the pacing of the story to be consistent but perhaps a tad rushed at the end. The plot twists however were excellent, and I didn’t see them coming.
Trivium is an enchanting and mystical world that will keep you fully engrossed, while piecing together how long hidden secrets, ancient magic and magical creatures may all be intertwined.

This book is a YA fantasy that is set in an academy and it includes a unique magic system and some fantastic magical creatures.
I have given this four stars, because if I was reading this as a YA and it was one of my first fantasy books, I think I would have given it 5*!

Trivium completely pulled me in, and I honestly didn’t want to put it down. The world building, the danger beyond the wall, the creatures, the secrets, and the whole Defender/Slayer dynamic made this such an addictive read, it is perfect to get out of a reading slump.
Loveleena is such a badass FMC. I loved watching her grow into herself and become stronger, especially as she starts uncovering that there’s so much more to her than she ever realized. She’s fierce, sarcastic, impulsive, and absolutely refuses to let anyone walk all over her which made her so much fun to read.

I wasn’t completely sold at first because it was a bit slow to put the story together and confusing with all the different POVs, but as you move forward in the book, it becomes easier to tell who’s who and what’s happening. It’s action packed and twisty even if I could tell what some plot points were going to be. I neeeeever could have predicted the ending!! It ends on a big plot twist with a massive story that’s just unfolding, and I’m at the edge of my seat for the next installement!

I wasn’t completely sold at first because it was a bit slow to put the story together and confusing with all the different POVs, but as you move forward in the book, it becomes easier to tell who’s who and what’s happening. It’s action packed and twisty even if I could tell what some plot points were going to be. I neeeeever could have predicted the ending!! It ends on a big plot twist with a massive story that’s just unfolding, and I’m at the edge of my seat for the next installement!

Trivium was a breath of fresh air! If you’re looking for a read to get you out of a book slump, I highly recommend this one. I enjoyed this book so much!
It was long enough to feel like a good, satisfying read, but short enough that I never found myself skipping over details. Some fantasy books get caught up in overly detailed scenes, and while I understand the importance of world-building, sometimes it can become a bit much. Jenna balanced it out perfectly.
Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another plot twist came along and completely threw me off! I loved that I couldn’t predict where the story was going.
The multiple POVs kept me on my toes, giving me just enough of each character’s perspective to make me want to keep reading to get back to their storyline. I enjoyed all of the POVs, but by far, Zeina was my favorite character. She was the perfect amount of feral and civilized, and I absolutely loved her.
And the magical creatures?! Chef’s kiss. 🤌🏻 They were perfect. It was so refreshing to see a new set of creatures instead of the same ones we’ve seen over and over again in a different font.
I’m so thankful I was selected to read this ARC, and I’ve already told so many people that they need to read this book! 🖤🖤
