The next to last volume (I believe) of this series continues its OK, kinda goofy Kaiju madness story. Aliens, humans, and Kaiju all battle it out for control of the Earth. The characters aren't especially interesting, the villainous aliens have silly Cobra Commander type plans. The art is very cartoonish. Meh. It's fine for a quick read, but I'm gonna forget this in a day.
This book has fallen into the trap of being little more than filler. Every plot line does little more than build-up for the final installment. The aliens are back, the Godzilla crew has reformed and a few of the monsters have either died or disappeared. All this will come together, of course, but not until Volume 6 - the concluding installment. The book itself was an enjoyable, quick read but little more. The artwork is still consistent and dynamic and there is a big monster battle that takes place. In other words; Much the same as before. I'm loving this series but this book is doing little more than teasing me to read volume 6 - and I was planning on doing that anyway.
When the series has basically used all the monsters from land and space, mechs, and a couple of alien races, the only thing to do; is start making hybrids. Aliens use creatures called Trilopods which can use the genetic material from monsters they bite to mutate into a hybrid monster. There's lots of action but the action is often difficult to follow.
Every ten pages they throw another kaiju at us, never giving any time for development - and yes I know how ridiculous it is to expect 'character development' among giant punchy bitey monsters - which leaves the entire story without depth or suspense.
So I've made it up to volume five with these books now. Volumes one to four were excellent. This one was good but just not as good as the previous ones. Why? Well I think it is because all the previous books utilised every Toho monster ever seen (even Zilla made an appearance!). Volume five introduces a new monster, a newly created monster. So there is no little smile because you recognise it, no little cheer because it was one of your favourites. Also the art is a lot darker, sometimes making the action difficult to follow. I still like the book but that is because it is a continuation of an ongoing story which I've really, really liked. I hope volume six will return to the previous high standards. Either way it is approaching the end of the overall arc and that alone will hopefully be satisfying enough.
