AN ACCIDENTAL VOYEUR...

Jack Flood has a problem that hes long-since given up trying to solve. He's a success in business but a failure as a man. He doesn't even care anymore...until he sees the open window in the hotel room below.

The open window...and the woman...

The door looks unassuming -- Room 415 -- but Flood knows what horrors rage behind it. Soon the sweat of his desire will be besmirched with butchers blood, and the moans of passion will grind down to throat-ripping screams.

Flood is about to walk hand in hand with the woman of his dreams, into the wide-open jaws of the lewdest nightmare, where love, longing, and desire collide with the unspeakable -- all in the middle of a night that bids the question:

JUST HOW SICK CAN YOU BE?

Knock on the door, turn the knob, and step across the threshold of...

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Edward Lee is an American novelist specializing in the field of horror, and has authored 40 books, more than half of which have been published by mass-market New York paperback companies such as Leisure/Dorchester, Berkley, and Zebra/Kensington. He is a Bram Stoker award nominee for his story "Mr. Torso," and his short stories have appeared in over a dozen mass-market anthologies, including THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES OF 2000, Pocket's HOT BLOOD series, and the award-wining 999. Several of his novels have sold translation rights to Germany, Greece, and Romania. He also publishes quite actively in the small-press/limited-edition hardcover market; many of his books in this category have become collector's items. While a number of Lee's projects have been optioned for film, only one has been made, HEADER, which was released on DVD to mixed reviews in June, 2009, by Synapse Films.

Lee is particularly known for over-the-top occult concepts and an accelerated treatment of erotic and/or morbid sexual imagery and visceral violence.

He was born on May 25, 1957 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. In the late-70s he served in the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, in Erlangen, West Germany, then, for a short time, was a municipal police officer in Cottage City, Maryland. Lee also attended the University of Maryland as an English major but quit in his last semester to pursue his dream of being a horror novelist. For over 15 years, he worked as the night manager for a security company in Annapolis, Maryland, while writing in his spare time. In 1997, however, he became a full-time writer, first spending several years in Seattle and then moving to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where he currently resides.

Of note, the author cites as his strongest influence horror legend H. P. Lovecraft; in 2007, Lee embarked on what he calls his "Lovecraft kick" and wrote a spate of novels and novellas which tribute Lovecraft and his famous Cthulhu Mythos. Among these projects are THE INNSWICH HORROR, "Trolley No. 1852," HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, GOING MONSTERING, "Pages Torn From A Travel Journal," and "You Are My Everything." Lee promises more Lovecraftian work on the horizon.

This chapbook is numbered 82 of 452 produced by Necro Ptess, and is signed by Edward Lee.

Jack Flood is the sales director for a very successful, hi-tech company.

He is attending a trades how in Florida. then One day, he glances out his window to another room to see a beautiful woman having sex. Flood deduces that the woman is a prostitute and the man with are is her pimp Leon,

Flood is an upstanding, successful businessman and yet underneath the veneer is a true deviant.

not for the weak reader.

It's always dreadfully hard to rate a book by Edward Lee. Adjectives like disgusting, repulsive, vile, crawling in the gutters of humankind, grotesque, violent, are the usual, easy ones to layer on his sordid tales. At the same time, you fear that if you say you enjoyed his stories or had fun reading them, you will come across as a deeply disturbed and deranged individual. Maybe someone will send the cops knocking at your door...

So, I better play it safe and say I read with interest, fascinated by an imagination that dares to explore the depths of human depravity. Floating in that twisted matters cesspool in the company of others like Sade, Palahniuk, and Wrath James White, this book bobs like a bright red apple with a worm sticking it out of it and looking at you with a wide grin on its dirty little face.

Try it! If you enjoy it, consider yourself twisted. :-)

To be avoided at all cost by those with a sensitive (and sensible) nature. I'm not joking!

Another great story from Edward Lee. Simple premise and nice twist ending. If you like Lee's writing style then you will like this story. Fun little read.

This was a nice quick read. A slighted man whose wife cheated on him unexpectedly finds the cure to his broken heart. That is... killing/ torturing his ex-wife in the most gruesome way possible, something that was not portrayed in the book. It ended there and then, which was a pity as I wanted to read about how he felt after overcoming what he thought was never achievable.
Also, what happened to Carol? It was such a letdown when there was no follow up on her. It was almost as good as her being killed if the author kills her character just like that.
On another hand, I liked the unexpected collaboration with Leon and Oscar.

While the ending was ok, we wonder what happened to Carol, one of the prominent characters.

Originally printed in the deluxe hardback (limited to only thirteen copies) of Damned: an Anthology of the Lost, “Room 415” by Edward Lee is now available in a signed, limited to 400, chapbook from Necro Publications. Lee has commonly used his chapbooks to experiment with his writing style. There he has written some of his grossest stories and branched out into other genres such as Science Fiction. “Room 415” once again shows Lee experimenting with his story-telling style.

Jack Flood is recently divorced from his wife and is in Florida for a business convention. Tortured by beautiful, scantily-clad women and his inability to have an orgasm, Flood’s life gets worse when he spots a pimp beating a prostitute from his hotel room window. After befriending some of the local prostitutes, he gets pulled into world that may provide him with a solution to his sexual problems.

The storyline is driven, like most of Lee’s work, by sex and violence. Deviating from his normal technique of showing every gushy detail, much of the obscenity is only hinted at in “Room 414”. Lee instead places the focus on Flood as he looses his humanity. As he journeys deeper into a world of obsessive sexuality, the story becomes darker and darker. The extreme nihilism of the tale, places it amongst Lee’s bleakest.

Lee’s limited works has a tendency to sell-out and later pull in big bucks on eBay, so, if you are interested in getting a copy, there are still copies available from several booksellers (Necro Publications is already sold-out). “Room 415” is not an essential addition to one’s library, but, for the already avowed Edward Lee fan, it is a dark, satisfying character study.

I didn't really take to this short story. The sex and violence wasn't really an issue for me but I did find the story on the whole to be a bit boring. It is a man endlessly considering his problems with impotency and being irritated by the endless display of sexy prostitutes hanging around the hotel. And that was going on and on and I got bored with it and the convention talk. Hope I have better luck with the next one.

Why 5 stars for a story of human debauchery ? Because its well written. Sexual content puts it mildly. Feed your curiosity but be warned its not for everyone.
