My name isn't Jefferson Long. That is a pen name, obviously. I will not tell you my real name, which is my attempt to keep some professional distance between myself and my writing. It is failing, by the way. You might mock the name choice, and rightfully so. The name came to me a long time ago (pun) and somehow stuck. I have to live with that.

I was born and raised in Germany, studied history, literature and media at a German university, and worked as a professional photographer with my own studio, consulting other photographers, and in education. I also worked with different artists, some of whom influenced me more than others, like Sabine Kacunko, whose black-and-white aesthetics definitely influenced me, and Joachim Stork, whose personality, exactness and knowledge helped me develop my own style.

I was accidentally diagnosed with aphantasia when it was en vogue about ten years ago. I cannot see images in my mind, which I always thought was normal. If you ask me about a sunset, I might describe it in geometrical patterns, shapes, locations and colors. It has strongly shaped the way I perceive and photograph the world and, consequently, the way I write about it.

If you ask a language model about my writing, it will probably compare it with the books of Sebald, Ernaux, Knausgård, maybe Houellebecq, without the cynicism, and perhaps a few others I already forgot. I honestly never read any of them, so I wouldn't call them my influences. Mine were Shakespeare, Max Frisch, Georg Trakl, Kant, Descartes, Freud, Jung, Simone de Beauvoir, William Eggleston and Jim Morrison. Jim Morrison to me is one of the greatest poets of the last century.

If something of what I wrote resonates, feel free to check out my books on KDP and read the "Read Sample" section. You can also have a look at my photographs and visual art at jeffersonlong.carrd.co. I might even blog here because sometimes I have strange ideas I can't contain and want to share and discuss with you.
