Nosy shopkeeper turned amateur detective Vera Wong can’t resist solving a murder, even while she’s on vacation, in this delightful mystery from USA Today bestselling author Jesse Q. Sutanto.
Chinese mother and detective extraordinaire Vera Wong delights in meddling, which happily has led her to solve not one, but two murders. And the internet seems to agree that she has found her calling in sleuthing. It’s the ideal side hobby for when Vera isn’t running her teahouse in bustling San Francisco. So is her recent discovery of the joys of social media, where she shares updates about the teahouse—and her cases—with her millions of followers.
All that work has earned Vera a much-deserved break. A Parisian vacation, to be exact. Though it helps that this vacation is almost entirely funded by the loads of gifts that her fans keep sending as tokens of their adoration. How could she have known that accepting free accommodation at a gorgeous apartment in Paris would result in a dead man lying in the middle of her Airbnb?
Clearly, it’s a sign that this murder needs Vera’s own unique brand of sleuthing. But this case might be a challenge even for Vera, as she uncovers that the victim was tangled up with a mob boss who now seems to have his sights set on her. Good thing there’s no case a little meddling can’t solve. . . .
Jesse Q Sutanto grew up shuttling back and forth between Jakarta and Singapore and sees both cities as her homes. She has a Masters degree from Oxford University, though she has yet to figure out a way of saying that without sounding obnoxious. She is currently living back in Jakarta on the same street as her parents and about seven hundred meddlesome aunties. When she's not tearing out her hair over her latest WIP, she spends her time baking and playing FPS games. Oh, and also being a mom to her two kids.
*** 10/12/26 *** Jesse Sutanto's upcoming new release features San Francisco teahouse owner, Vera Wong, and her bakery neighbor, Winifred, headed to Paris for a vacation. Vera's prior escapades have resulted in some TikTok notoriety and free gifts from her fans, including nice luggage and a Parisian Airbnb, in which they soon discover a dead body. Let the high jinx begin.
To read Vera Wong books you have to be comfortable with a particular Asian version of English from Vera and Winifred, where expected nouns and verbs are often omitted. You also have to believe the two women can talk their way into anything (lead by Vera, always), cook expansive and delicious meals in hours, and truly solve serious criminal activities. Sutanto is writing "light thrillers" that are a step up from "cozy mysteries" to appeal to an older female audience who kind of like to read about stubborn and smart women contributing in meaningful ways in retirement years. She does a great job of this and the popularity of the books is well earned! The PROBLEM is the constant referring to Vera as an "old woman" and Sutanto's portrayal of her as someone most women would picture as in her 80's, yet the book states over and over that she is in her 60s. It is like Sutanto is stuck in a Golden Girls depiction of women in their 60s and it is a tiny bit offensive to actual women in their 60s lol.
That said, I enjoyed the book, and hope Sutanto goes into a little new direction with her next one as I think the concept could get stale unless we see an evolution in Vera - maybe she goes back to school, sells the tea house, decides to date, or somehow stays away from the danger of becoming a caricature of a Chinese mother. Also, Sutanto asks in the Acknowledgements section at the end of the book for reader input on where Vera should go on her next adventure. I'm going to suggest LOS ANGELES! It is a quick flight down from San Francisco, and she can get connected into Hollywood, UCLA/USC, all the LA Asian communities, and lots more. 4-stars.
*** 10/5/26 *** Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for an ARC preview copy of the newest Vera Wong, coming April 20th, 2027! Two words: Murder and PARIS! Review coming soon.
This is the third installment in Jesse Q. Sutanto’s delightful Vera Wong series, and I will happily follow this hilarious, meddlesome, utterly endearing woman wherever her adventures take her!
Vera is a Chinese mother in her 60s who is smart, opinionated, occasionally arrogant, delightfully spicy, and sometimes hilariously critical of everyone around her. But beneath all that meddling is an enormous heart. She loves fiercely, and her particular brand of tough love is part of what makes her such an unforgettable character. And yes, she even has her own true-crime TikTok channel!
This time, Vera and her friend Winifred are off to Paris for a girls’ trip. Naturally, when a murder occurs at their Airbnb, Vera simply cannot resist getting involved. Before long, she and Winifred have assembled a colorful cast of suspects and taken it upon themselves to solve the crime. Throw in an art heist, plenty of French culture, and Vera’s trademark confidence in her own investigative abilities, and you’ve got one wonderfully entertaining adventure.
Now, here’s something I don’t often say about a cozy mystery series: You really need to read these books in order.
Ordinarily, I’m quick to reassure readers that they can jump into a series wherever they’d like, but not this time. My five-star rating comes with a caveat: I already know and absolutely adore Vera Wong. I’ve spent two books falling in love with her personality, her relationships, and her wonderfully unconventional approach to life. Without that history, I suspect this might feel like a fairly ordinary cozy mystery. But for those of us who have come to love Vera, getting another adventure with her feels like visiting an old friend.
And what a delightful visit it is!
If you’re already a Vera Wong fan, pick this one up the moment you have the opportunity. I certainly couldn’t wait to get back to her world, and I wasn’t disappointed.
As far as I’m concerned, Jesse Q. Sutanto can keep writing Vera Wong mysteries for as long as she likes, and I’ll keep showing up. Vera is funny, frustrating, clever, loving, and completely irresistible.
Thank you to Berkley for providing me with an electronic advance reading copy in exchange for my honest review.

Vera Wong Returns in a Fun Mystery for All Generations
I was so excited to read Vera Wong's Vacation Hacks for Catching a Killer. It was very good and had all the vigor of the first book. I think this is the type of book you could read with your mom (if she doesn’t mind a little swearing) and your niece because there is something here for all generations. I hope Jesse is working on a fourth book. I think Vera should go to Shanghai next!
Recommend to others: Yes. This series is great.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Berkley Publishing Group and Berkley via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Featuring: Sexagenarian Chinese MC, San Francisco, California; Tea Shop Owner, Found Family, Girls Trip, Paris, France; Influencer, Bad Lying, Police Detective, Diverse Cast, Social Media, Multiple POVs, Food, Immigrants, Murder Investigation, Acknowledgments
Updates: Page 85 of 320 [Chapter] Seven ~ Edith -I like this better than the first two books so far.
Vera is BACK and now that she’s solved two murders, she and Winifred are taking a vacation. Vera announces on “ the TikTok” they are going to Paris and can solve a murder if needed. Of course, someone takes her up on her offer and a dead man is found in their Airbnb after a day of tea and pastries with Edith and her grandson, Matthew, who are fans. In Books 1 & 2, Vera sort of stumbles into solving the crimes, as well as bullying the suspects into confessing with her delicious meals and “ Chinese mother” tactics. However, with Winifred’s help, Vera is more strategic and perceptive in this book, while keeping her intuition, naivety, and charm.
Several mysteries are intertwined with the “fans,” turned suspects turned framily. Who killed the dead man? Who IS the dead man? Where is the missing brother of Matthew? What secrets are the characters hiding?
Vera Wong’s Vacation Hacks for Catching a Killer returns to the cozy murder charm and humorous boldness like in Book One, while involving the Mafia and misattributed art. 🖼️ Vera and Winifred’s love-competitive relationship strengthens during this “vacation,” and as in previous books, the new characters/suspects once again become part of Vera’s ever expanding framily.
Looking forward to Book 4! (and possibly a cookbook of Vera’s recipes and teas?) 🫖
Given my review of the second book, it seems clear I should have stopped there. But clearly, I can't get enough. Representation of older Asian women as main characters is still limited enough that these books feel like a breath of fresh air. That is, until I remember how surface-level the depictions are.
The main characters in classic or cozy mysteries are usually pretty cookie-cutter, but the depth given to Vera is particularly shallow. The first book delved into her personal conflicts and fears, but that exploration has largely disappeared from the second and third installments. And speaking of mysteries, as in the second book, Sutanto has abandoned any attempt at a twist, letting the reader in on the solution almost from the start.
Once again, the focus is on building a found family . But we've seen Vera navigate these themes before and with more depth, and this found family feels particularly superficial as she heads back to the States.
I want to like Vera's growing closeness with Winifred, but her characterization seems to reinforce the idea that all older Asian women are the same. And while I agree that these Asian mother stereotypes have roots in reality, Sutanto strips away so much individuality that they become the character's entire personality. The acknowledgments, in which she discusses how much of Vera is drawn from her own mother, feel almost preemptively defensive. I can believe that these mannerisms ring true, but both her mother and Vera deserve more depth.
There is an audience that needs to see that Asian women, particularly older women, are smart, competent, and strong, and I appreciate Sutanto serving that need. But for me, I'm already well-aware of that, and I'm looking for a more of the uniqueness and character that come along with those strengths.
Thanks to Berkley and NetGalley for the advance reading copy.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next installment in Vera’s series, and the wait was well worth it! Vera continues to be totally brash, overbearing, and stern - all while managing to be just as incredibly endearing, kind-hearted, accepting, and wonderful as ever. I felt like I was rolling my eyes at my own mother as Vera was admonishing her suspects, her family, Winifred, and really anyone else she came into contact with.
The cozy, comforting feeling that Vera’s suspects-turned-family experience around her comes right through the pages. I just want to sit down and have her feed me an obnoxious amount of delicious food!
I have loved all three books in this series because of Vera - I just love her! It was so fun to see her travel to Paris with her dear frenemy, Winifred. Watching them try to out-Chinese-mother each other throughout the book was seriously entertaining (and did I mention endearing?? lol).
What’s not to enjoy about a grandmother who’s a viral internet sensation investigating a murder during her sightseeing trip to Paris? For those of you who have read previous books featuring Vera, it will be like visiting a loved one. If this is your first time encountering this amateur sleuth (shh…she thinks she’s a professional), you may be tempted to backtrack and read about her earlier cases. The characters are colorful, the dialogue is snappy, and as with many good books, things are not always what they seem. I think “a bientot” is more appropriate than “au revoir” in this scenario.
I received an advance copy, but all opinions are my own.
Overall, I enjoyed the storyline. There were a few new and old characters throughout the story, and I enjoyed seeing how they came together. I loved the idea of Vera visiting Paris and how food brings people together. The mystery was okay, although some parts felt longer than necessary. Overall, I enjoyed the story.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for early access. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed traveling along with Vera and Winifred on their latest international escapade to Paris! The scenic European backdrop and the intricate murder mystery file kept the pages turning at a fantastic clip, making it a very fun, fast-paced read.
However, compared to the absolute comedic gold of the first two installments, this third entry felt like it was missing some of the signature, laugh-out-loud family humor. Separating Vera from her adopted support squad left a narrative gap where those hilarious, chaotic group dynamics usually shine. I also wished there were more scenes of Vera and Winifred enjoying Paris pre-murder. It felt like the book didn’t have enough chapters from Vera herself.
Additionally, as an avid reader of the series, it was a bit predictable and wasn’t as shocked at the ending as in the first two books. I also caught a couple of continuity lapses that dropped the realism a bit—including a timeline slip regarding Winifred's initial appearance on TikTok, and some inconsistent descriptions of Edith's looks.
For Vera's next adventure, I would absolutely love to see the author bring the entire motley crew back together for a cruise ship mystery! A cruise setting would be the perfect vehicle to watch Vera & Co. frantically try to solve a murder while darting between different international ports in a short span of time.
The opening scene could incorporate the ongoing storyline at a setting like The Broad or The Getty Center. Departing on a cruise from Los Angeles would naturally cut down the travel distance from San Francisco, reunite the full cast, and instantly restore that top-tier comedy and heart that makes this series so special!
Highly recommended for cozy mystery fans! I can’t wait for the next installment!
This was my first Vera Wong book, and if you're asking, "Can I jump into the series? Will it make sense?" The answer is YES! While Vera has a very big found family, the characters are rather minor and make sense in their context, so jumping in mid-series is very easy to do!
And what a delight this was. I'm not much of a mystery/thriller person, so maybe cozy murder mystery is up my alley?
Enter Vera Wong, your new favorite Chinese auntie slash amateur detective and TikTok star. She's going on a vacation to Paris! But she keeps running into fans...suspicious...fans... And there's a dead body.
Somehow, Vera is very excited about this.
Vera is absolutely a gem of a character. She's confident, sassy, and full of heart. She solves with wit but also through her own kind of love -- plying suspects with food and kindness to get to the bottom of things.
This is a laugh out loud kind of book, but with multi POV, its also tense at times, and deeply heartwarming in others. Somehow, the author will make you feel for all of the characters, no matter their motives.
This was a one of a kind experience, and I'm excited to go back and check out more from Vera.
I definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys the cozy genre, has a soft spot for asian aunties, or loves a low-stakes comedic mystery.
Thank you to Netgalley and Berkley for the ARC. I inhaled it in two days!
“Please don’t come back, I have high blood pressure.”
If I say I adore auntie Vera so much! This excursion to Paris was my most favorite murder plot yet.
The pacing was fast and steady, we meet new “friends” .. maybe suspects is more accurate. Characters from the previous installments make an appearance, but do not play a major role in this plot.
If you haven’t read the previous adventures of auntie Vera’s, you can comfortably jump in at this point and still grasp what’s going on and who is who.
What I appreciate throughout Sutanto’s stories is the familial love, the tongue in cheek commentary, the emphasis on women still being of value in older age and the love and respect they deserve. Auntie Vera reminds me of my mother’s friends. Growing up I was blessed to have aunties from all kinds of differing cultural backgrounds and with that came different food. I never realized how fortunate I was being able to eat all kinds of dishes from all over the world, and maybe that’s part of why as an aunt myself.. I now make sure that the littles have warm feet and food in their bellies. Mind you my niece is 23… it doesn’t matter, she’s still just a baby.
I just realized, I am “that” auntie now….
Thank you to Jesse Q. Sutanto for being one of my favorite authors and writing yet another murder mystery that was unexpected and satisfying! Thank you to Berkley Publishing for allowing me to cherish the women that came before me and realizing how I am becoming one of them.
Vera Wong and Winifred on a girls’ trip to Paris was apparently something I desperately needed in my life. 😂 Vera is already hilarious on her own, but give her another unfiltered older Asian woman to bounce off of and suddenly every scene has auntie energy dialed up to eleven. Their banter had me chuckling through basically the entire book. And somehow, underneath all that chaos, Jesse Q. Sutanto still gave me a genuinely GOOD mystery.
I also love that Vera isn’t some secret investigative genius. Her superpowers are feeding people, reading the room, asking wildly inappropriate questions with complete confidence, and giving off such intense auntie energy that eventually everyone just starts telling her their business. And the FOUND FAMILY. 🥹 Watching Vera go from the lonely woman we met in Book 1 to someone who has basically collected an entire village makes me so happy. The way everyone comes together in this one was such a satisfying full-circle moment.
Funny, clever, warm, twisty, and probably my favorite Vera Wong book yet. Vera + Winifred forever. Please send these women on more vacations. Preferably somewhere else people keep getting murdered.
Huge thanks to Berkley and NetGalley for the Advance Review Copy. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
I will always read anything Jesse writes, especially when it comes to her Vera Wong series! Why? Because Vera Wong is just so freaking precious, and whenever she gets her hands on a murder to solve, you just know you’re in for an adventure. I absolutely love all of Vera’s shenanigans because they get crazier and crazier, but honestly, at this point, we kind of expect it from her! What I love even more is seeing Vera get smarter with every mystery she solves. However, I do worry about her because people can get dangerous when they’re accused of murder, and Vera might be getting herself into more trouble than she realizes!
We also get a new group of people to meet, and you know we might end up getting attached to them along the way! And this time, we’re off to PARIS! 🇫🇷 Just when you think Vera’s adventures can’t get any crazier, she proves you wrong. If you love cozy mysteries with plenty of shenanigans, lovable characters, and a mystery that keeps you entertained, then you definitely need to pick up this series. Vera Wong will always have me seated for whatever she gets herself into next!
Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for the ARC.
When I finished reading the first Vera Wong book, I felt like she was the Chinese Auntie I’ve always wanted (and needed) in my life and that continues with the third book in the series.
Side characters from the past two books do show up at points but this book follows a whole new cast of characters along with Vera and Winifred. It was wonderful to see Vera charm Parisians into getting information about her new case in her own very special way. I love that Winifred was along for the ride and gave a counter balance to Vera, along with seeing which Chinese Auntie could out do the other in wit and food.
There were moments that it felt a bit slow but towards the end, the pace picked up and all the little pieces fell into place.
I highly recommend this book (and the series) if you’re looking for a fun mystery, a Chinese Auntie/Grandma who wishes her adopted family would just listen to her advice and eat her food.
Vera, I really wish I could follow you on TikTok and have you adopt me into your found family.
What a fun addition to Vera's story! Vera is off to Paris, with Winifred no less, and her many followers on "the Tik Tok" are helping her get ready for this big trip! One even offers the use of an Airbnb, and one sends Vera a deluxe set of expensive suitcases! What fans Vera has! However, Vera can't go that long without a dead body turning up, and this is true in Paris as well. When one turns up in their Airbnb, and their luggage goes missing, other fans step in to offer a new place to stay, an ear to listen, and other guidance. But not everyone in Vera and Winifred's orbit can be trusted, can they? With a list of numerous suspects, additional mysteries, and family and friends back home pleading for their early return, Vera and Winifred instead set out to solve the case as only they can: through delicious food and tea, a strong Chinese mother/auntie vibe, tender hearts, wicked humor, unusual insights, and special luck in avoiding danger.
Special thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!
Vera Wong decides to go on her first girls trip with frenemy Winifred. These two make me laugh as they constantly try and one up each other. They go on a trip to Paris and thanks all Vera's fame the trip will be very economical as someone has given her luggage and a free airbnb stay. Of course things go off the rails very quickly as there is a unalive body in their airbnb and there luggage has been taken. Vera Wong takes this opportunity to solve another case in her very humorous way of feeding all her suspects delicious food to get to the truth. She also uses some other unconventional ways to track her suspects and look into their past. I enjoyed all the witty banter and how nothing goes smoothly but she prevails. The whole growing family and how they all meddle in on her vacation with growing concern that she is in over her head. I absolutely love Vera Wong and can't get enough of her sarcasm and outlandish behavior.
Advanced readers copy received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley!
This is one of my favorite series and I was so excited to get an advanced copy. At first I was a little nervous with the vacation plot as the first two books introduced so many characters, the idea of adding more made me nervous. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the new characters were added and how the world building happened.
I love how Vera is witty, thoughtful, and incredibly funny. She and Winifred traveling together is the perfect duo! The Vera Wong books are the perfect combination of funny (I literally laugh out loud), a mystery that keeps you guessing, and heartwarming. I recommend the series regularly to friends. I could read a million of these books. This most recent book was the perfect addition to the series. Vera continues to be confident, funny, and interesting while also growing as a person and expanding her chosen family.
I received an advance reader copy of this book and am voluntarily providing an honest review.
Premise Vera accepts a fan-subsidized vacation to Paris and immediately becomes involved in a murder investigation
Liked * Cozy to the max * Vera brings her full charm and irrepressible energy into play, complete with high-end tea and sumptuous Chinese food * Sympathetic victims and interesting backstories * Winifred is the perfect sidekick * Easy and fun
Not for Me * Minimal detection * Main mystery is a bit far-fetched
Closing Comment I could say more about the plotting and plausibility of the story, but let’s be honest, the series is all about the indestructible force that is Vera Wong. This new entry fully delivers on the authority and charisma of a senior matron. While I do worry about the limit of Vera’s method of crime solving, ultimately the story is best enjoyed with the heart and not with the mind.
Vera is back and as entertaining as ever! This novel is both heartwarming and witty, featuring wonderful, easy to like characters. The plot weaves together multiple intertwined mysteries and a classic lineup of suspects, all of whom Vera cleverly charms with her delicious cooking to solve the case. This time around, Winnifred joins the fun. The friendly competition and light cattiness between the two of them add a highly entertaining dynamic to the story. I also loved the fascinating tidbits about Chinese culture that the author seamlessly incorporates throughout. This series is so cinematic that it truly deserves a television adaptation. I am already eagerly looking forward to the next installment!
Vera Wong’s Vacation Hacks for Catching Killers is the third book in the series, and I have absolutely loved every single one! Vera is such a wonderful, unforgettable character. She truly comes alive on the pages, and her personality makes me want to appreciate and respect my elders even more.
I absolutely adore her quirks, her wisdom, her nosiness, and the way she manages to get herself involved in everything! She has such a big heart, and it’s impossible not to fall in love with her. Every time I pick up one of these books, it feels like I’m catching up with an old friend.
This series continues to bring me so much joy, and I genuinely hope we get more of Vera Wong! If you haven’t started this series yet, you’re missing out. Highly recommend! ❤️
"Vera Wong's Vacation Hacks for Catching a Killer' is the third book that "Stars" Vera Wong a now 64 year old Chinese lady who has come into yet another murder she must solve. This time it is in Paris where she is vacationing with her friend. When there she immediately is involved in a suspicious death she now needs to find out "who done it" she uses her usual tactic by making everyone a suspect. Again she befriends the people she meet and of course, feeds them her delicious dinners she has cooked and her fabulous teas. This one involves missing luggage and paintings that may also tie into the mysterious death. She is her usual bossy but caring person who "moms" on those around her. Another good book in the Vera Wong series. I would give this book a four and a half.
I enjoyed the digital review copy of Vera Wong's next adventure - due to be published in April 2027. This was a fun installment in the adventures of Vera, Winifred and Vera's assorted, and growing, family group. The third adventure takes place on a 'girls' trip to Paris - which of course goes awry almost immediately upon arrival when a dead body shows up in their airbnb on their first day in town. Once again, some exploited people's lives are positively influenced and Vera adds another win to her growing list of solved murder cases. Delicious food, listening 'aunties', and a few slightly illegal hi-jinx continue to be Vera's tools of choice.
This was my first time reading the Vera Wong series, and I really enjoyed getting to know the characters. The main characters were likable, memorable, and easy to root for, which made the story even more enjoyable.
The plot flowed nicely, and the pacing kept me engaged from beginning to end. The story never dragged, and I appreciated how smoothly everything unfolded. Vera’s personality and the relationships she builds were definitely the highlights for me.
Overall, this was a fun, fast-paced mystery with a great cast of characters. I’ll definitely be checking out the first book in the series.
I'm a fan of Vera Wong and was happy to read this latest addition to this humorous mystery series. Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the ARC.
Vera, now a successful social media influencer, jets off to Paris with Winifred for a girls' trip. Vera has received a free stay at an Air BnB and very expensive luggage from her fans.
But despite an exciting beginning, Vera and Winifred soon find their apartment ransacked and a corpse. Of course, Vera sets out to solve the crime and soon, in typical Vera fashion, is feeding and befriending her suspects.
The path to justice is never more fun than the you're walking it with Vera!
4.5 stars. I missed the first two books in the series and I'm sorry that I did. Vera is a character that is a real character (pun intended). She's 64 years old, has a Tik Tok account and lots of "fans" after previously solving a murder. She believes everyone should call their mother every morning for words of wisdom and you should cook for those around you.
I loved Vera, but the mystery was the backbone of the story. There was plenty going on to keep you in the story. It was fast-paced and plenty of characters, but not too many that it is hard to follow. Entertaining, exciting and exhilarating!
Thanks to Berkeley for the digital copy via NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.
Vera is in Paris on vacation when she finds herself in the middle of crimes that she just HAS to solve. She’s a social media star who has fans everywhere. And her amateur sleuthing helps solve crimes and brings lies to light.
I love Vera and her friends. They’re such entertaining characters. I love how they bounce off of each other. My only complaint about this book is how hungry it makes me. Vera’s descriptions of food make me want to find the exact food she’s made.
I received this ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for my advance copy of this book.
Vera is, as always, a joy to read. Her indomitable spirit and interest in even those people she considers suspects sets this series apart from other cozy mysteries. She is on vacation in Paris but gets embroiled in a mystery when a man is found dead in her Airbnb. Through some interesting reveals and twists, the mystery is solved and the ending is (mostly) positive. Guest appearances from characters she has aided in previous books is a plus. This was enjoyable and the suspense kept me reading quickly.
