Rate this book

A rabbit walks through the snow and is hungry. Soon he sees an apple left on a tree but he cannot reach it. When another hungry animal comes along they try together and others join in until through cooperation they manage to bring down that sought after apple. Despite having to suspend belief that the apple will give these four creatures 'full tummies' and certainly wouldn't fill a fox or a bear up this was a nice story of working together to make something happen with beautiful illustrations and lovely snowy scenes.

I have a distinct weakness for beautiful winter scenes, so when I first saw the cover of Feridun Oral's The Red Apple - a contemporary Turkish picture-book whose original title is Kirmizi Elma - I did a double-take. When I discovered its country of origin, and that it had been published in English by WingedChariot Press - a small UK publisher "set up to translate and publish innovative children's books from across the globe" (although I understand that they've gone digital, so I'm not sure if they're still producing print books - more's the pity!) - I knew I had to have it. I don't think I've encountered any other contemporary Turkish picture-books, but if Oral's artwork is anything to go by, I've been missing out!

A sweet animal story about a rabbit, a mouse (who looks more like a rat to me), a fox, and a bear, all of whom work together one snowy winter day to obtain a high-hanging red apple, it has a gentle humor that is very appealing. The animals companions may end up collapsed on the ground, at the end, but their efforts pay off in a happy (if somewhat unrealistic) fashion. I don't know if its an indication of gluttony (perhaps just skepticism?) in me, but one apple just doesn't seem enough to feed four hungry creatures! Leaving that aside, this book is simply gorgeous, with beautiful artwork that more than compensates for any (slight) weakness in story. I loved the textured, furry appearance of each of the animal friends, the large white snowflakes falling throughout, and the overall composition of each page. The contrast between the bare branches of the trees and the white landscape around, for instance, or the view from the bear's den, out into the world.

A beautiful book, one that deserves to be better known, I would recommend The Red Apple to young readers who enjoy animal stories, or who love winter, as well as to all those who appreciate beautiful picture-book art, or are looking for children's books from Turkey.

Nice, albeit anti-climatic ending. Perhaps too simple for today's world, but it's nice to know it could happen somewhere. Sweet illustrations, too.

In a tale intended to be shared with others, a rabbit ventures out into a wintry day to find something to eat. He spies a delicious-looking apple hanging temptingly from a tree branch, but try as he might, he cannot reach the fruit. After several failed attempts, he enlists the help of a mouse, then a fox, and finally a bear. Working together, they are able to just reach the apple. The little twist at the end adds to the book's delights, and young readers will easily understand the message and appreciate the problem-solving skills of these animals. After all, cooperation often brings more success than conflict or than trying to go it alone. The illustrations in this book published in Switzerland are extraordinary, filled with rich tints and tones and so realistic that readers will almost be able to shiver with the cold and anticipate biting into that juicy apple.

The book tells the story of a hungry rabbit picking a red apple hanging very high together with a mouse, a fox, and a bear to pick a red apple. Rabbits and other animals that do not give up and challenge to the end to pick the apple can be good role models for children. The illustrations are well organized according to the storyline. In particular, everything is covered with snow, and the red apple hanging on a high branch is emphasized. It also indicates how much animals want the red apple. I chose this book for my read aloud because the story gives a good lesson for children that what you cannot do by yourself is easier when you do with others. The other reason why I chose this book is that I thought it was suitable as a book for reading aloud because there were many animals that children might be familiar with and elements that could attract children's interest by speaking different voices depending on each animal.

The main theme of this book is teamwork. This book is one that I would include in my classroom library, but maybe not for a read aloud. The story is about a rabbit who sees an apple in a tree but can't reach it. More animals start coming and eventually they all work together to get the apple. It's a heartwarming story of teamwork. I liked the illustrations!
