The only way that twenty-three year old Jadie Santiago can escape her sucky childhood is to force herself to move on with her life and bury a shameful secret.

When Jadie lands a new job at a literary agency things start looking up. Yet the one thing Jadie never expected was capturing the attention of the devastatingly handsome Reece Carter, an aspiring writer who could destroy the precarious future she’s just started rebuilding.

Even though her heart might be in the right place, Jadie can’t seem to stop making one bad decision after another. Especially when it comes to those she loves. Which means getting involved with Reece could be dangerous, but so is ignoring the smoldering tension that ignites whenever they’re around each other. And before she can fully commit to someone, Jadie must learn to overcome her own inner-demons.

After Jadie bumps into the absentee father who abandoned her, it causes those crippling insecurities to come crashing back into her life. The shocking encounter forces Jadie to face a dark deed that still haunts her. Now she has no other choice but to tell Reece the truth and risk losing everything.

1 Platypire for Something Like This by Eileen Cruz Coleman

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

This is just bad. Really bad. I felt like I read an unfinished, unedited book that was someone's first draft. At first I was intrigued with the cover, the synopsis and I liked the fact the protagonist was a Latina. That's pretty much all I liked about this book.
I knew after the first few chapters I was in trouble. The author missed the mark with not enough "showing" and basically was just "telling" the story. Therefore, I could not picture what was going on or could not relate with the characters. I honestly did not understand all of Jadie's mood swings or why she fell in love so fast with Reece. This had to be one of the worst written instant love stories I've ever read. I am not against instant love stories but they still need a build up. Did he look at her seductively, flirt, or something kinda romantic? The answer is no. They had one sorta date and basically after one night of passion knew they were in love. WTF!!!
Then there was all the unnecessary , overreaction drama that made no sense. Jadie became a women who at first was mature then turn into a teenage brat. I really did not understand why she hated her coworker Tom so much. She just hated him on the spot just based on her own neurosis. He didn't do anything bad. Not even looking at her smugly or talking to her in a condescending manner. NADA! Then her behavior at her roommates dinner party was ridiculous. What grown women throws a plate with food because their coworker shows up? That was just an awful over the top scene that made no sense.
There was quite a few more issues that I had with this story. From start to finish I just did not like this book. There was no character development and the whole story was completely rushed.
I need to also add that I did not like that acclaimed author, Junot Diaz, was mention throughout the whole novel. He's one of my favorite authors and has no problems with "showing" his readers a great story. Read just one paragraph from him and there is no comparison.
I can not recommend for anyone to purchase or read this book. Please take a pass and not waste your time.

I'm so sorry but I could not finish this book for the life of me. It was off to a great start, but then the heroine was so wishy washy. She had abandonment issues, but that shouldn't have made her act demented and psycho. I felt like she May have been schizophrenic and off her meds, that's how impulsive she was. I couldn't get with this heroine or the plot which included finding her homeless father who she couldn't talk to because she was so broken. I'm so sorry but this book is silly and don't make a lick of sense. I felt like I was in a bipolar whirlwind trying to keep up with this heroines moods. 1 star for the parts I did read and liked. I gave a .5 for the sub characters and Hero who were actually likable, and another .5 because the cover was sweet.

Ms. Coleman has done an excellent job covering a subject that has seen little coverage (as far as I can tell)--what happens emotionally to children of abandonment. Even if only one parent leaves, if the child believes he/she caused the abandonment, it taints the child's emotional development due to the skewed reasoning. Jadie Santiago's "Papi" left when she was eight, and she figured she wasn't worth loving after that. Because of her lack of access to psychiatric care or family or friendly advice, she didn't work through her interpretations in a healthy manner, so she built strong walls around her pain and her heart. The story tells how she still finds a way to resolve her issues and to find joy and love in her life and to grow emotionally. The writing could have been smoother in places, but some courses or classes should smooth it out nicely. With a little more writing experience, I think Ms. Coleman will join the class of top writers. I am looking forward to reading more of her work and I recommend this story to anyone who wants a story just a cut above the standard romance.

Something Like This missed the mark for me. It's the story of Jadie finding her way as an adult with her job, her boyfriend Reece, her roommates. It's all overshadowed by her losses. The abandonment of her father who is now a homeless man living outside her office and the death of her mother.

I couldn't relate to Jadie. Her immaturity was too much. Her mood swings were ridiculous. I could never figure out why she reacted or overreacted to every situation in her life. And the insta-love with Reece, who wasn't a fully mature adult himself, didn't ring true. Her roommates were too understanding, her boss was too lenient. Jadie would go from being insecure to hopeful to mean to ridiculous to depressed to hopeless then back to hopeful all within the span of a scene. Too much.

The premise was interesting and I believe the story has potential, talking about forgiveness, redemption, personal battles... All with a love story to back up. It has a great meet-cute! And.... That is where everything I liked ends. I could not stand the repetitive monologues of insecurity from Jamie.. I understand insecurity and fears.. but not thrown at the reader in every page of the book. I think Reece was meant to be this really adorable main character to fawn over.. but he actually seems really suspicious, in the way he chases Nadie, like he is always stalking her and has some hidden motive there. I was not sold on the love story... Talking about toxic relationships!....I actually made it to half the book expecting maybe there would be a plot twist to make everything have more sense, but reading other reviews on the book I guess there will be no plot twist..so this is as far as I'll get, hoping Nadie figures out her stuff and is able to be happy.

Something Like This is full of finding love, forgiveness, a place to belong, and family. It's about facing your fears, your past, and not giving up even though things may be hard. It's about a young adult trying to make her way through life with an emptiness she wishes could go away. It's about her hopes and dreams she once had, but gave up on because she doesn't think she's good enough. Her own father couldn't love her, he left her, so why would she ever amount to anything? Despite that though, she tries. She works hard to be where she is and she’s grateful. It’s about conquering her fears and realizing she is a person, someone who deserves to be loved. It;s about learning to love and be loved. It’s about opening up and being happy again. It’s something we all can relate to in one way or another.

Which is probably why I enjoyed this book so much. The main character, Jadie, is someone we can all relate to, because at one point or another we felt insecure or like we weren’t good enough. And while at times she tends to be a tad dramatic, you can’t really blame her because from the way she thinks, she’s not good enough for Reece. He deserves someone better, someone with less baggage. What she didn’t realize -what we don’t realize- though, because she was so lost in her own pain, was that everyone has a bit of baggage; everyone’s hurting. We tend to forget, just as Jadie did, that we’re all human and we all hurt despite the smiles we plaster on our faces; no matter how real one might look. And so that made her a character easy to relate to and connect with, which made for a better read.

While I really love the characters, the relationship between Reece and Jadie came on too fast for my liking. As Jadie herself said, they were already telling each other they loved the other only days after they met. It was too fast for my liking. Despite that though, the relationship was well written and real enough that it didn’t feel like they fell in love days after meeting. Sure, they still needed to keep getting to know one another, but they fit together so well and it felt real, especially because they got into fights like all couples do.

Overall (sorry, I don’t have all that much to add), the characters were great, the feelings too, but the pacing too fast. I do recommend reading Something Like This if you like contemporary reads with great characters.

*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Xpresso in exchange for a fair and honest review.*
Jade has lived a harder life than some. Her father left and her mother got sick and died. She is trying to make something of her life and gets offered a job that might allow her to do that. She just so happens to run across a homeless man on her way to work to find out it is her father. She is in a battle with herself with how to handle it. Does she still love him, can she forgive him, does she hate him, does she want to help him? These thoughts leave her ashamed. When she meets the man of her dreams, Reece, she is thrown through a loop and realizes she has to trust in someone. Is she strong enough?
This story is an emotional journey. It’s packed full of happiness, sadness, desperation, fear, worry, joy, embarrassment, shame, and many more I’m sure I’m forgetting to mention. This starts from page one and left me in tears on the last page. It’s written so beautifully that I don’t think anyone can finish it without a few tears, and not many books make me tear up or cry.
This book hits on emotions we all feel but don’t like to talk about; bitterness, jealousy, longing, desperation, hate, anger, and more. The author did such a GREAT job bringing these emotions and feelings to the pages and making the reader really feel and understand how they were written. This story has romance in it sure, and some hot bedroom scenes, but it also has an incredible story line to go behind it. It’s not all daisy and roses and the characters have some big flaws and some demons in their closets.
My only complaint is there was still more to the book that could be written. However, I know this is a series so I hope that the author is able to expand on those things in future books.
There is no question as to whether you should read it. You should. It’s heavy and emotional but it’s incredible!

Firstly, I just realised that this cover actually looks like the girl is being cuddled by another girl which just so readers know is not the case as this is definitely a girl meets guy type novel. Secrets can either hold us together or cause us to fall apart and sometimes you have to wonder what you are keeping a secret - is it worth keeping it inside of you or can you let others know and it not change their perception of you. Everyone has secrets that they don't want people to know and in Something Like This - secrets that have stayed hidden for so long can fester inside of us and cause us to act out or be a certain way. In Something Like This we meet Jadie who is working at a small publishing literary agents office for Mr. Walker - he is eccentric at times but has a lot of faith in Jadie and believes she is a good person , he is not the only person who thinks this as we meet Reece who is Mr. Walker's nephew and a new budding author and Reece as the book goes along is head over heels in love with Jadie. Though she believes that she doesn't deserve either of them and their welcoming and happiness as she has a secret - she passes her dad every day while he sits on the street homeless and she hasn't offered him help. How can they love her when she believes that she is a bad person for not helping her last piece of family ? Something Like This by Eileen Cruz Coleman was a good read and an insight to what happens when you keep secrets and how sometimes by not letting them out - you can push away people and lash out at them distancing and making yourself more lonely than you ever needed to be in the first place , the other reason why I loved it was that it was simply set mainly at a literary agency and loving books - I loved the setting and atmosphere of the story.
If you love New Adult stories with a love interest and edginess , then this is the read for you.

This was a great book! It truly touched me, and I fell in love with the characters. I couldn't put it down. This book is about grief, true love and life altering events. This is my first time reading a book by Eileen and it made me want more. I would love to see what happens next.

Something Like This is another book I hadn't heard much about before reading. However, when I saw the synopsis on Xpresso Book Tours I thought that the blurb sounded interesting so I decided to request it. I was happy when I found a copy in my inbox a few days later.

Something Like This focuses on Jade Santiago, a young woman whose life changes dramatically when she comes across her homeless father on the way to work. Jade tries to rekindle her relationship with her father, whilst at the same time falling in love with her boss's nephew, Reece.

I found this book to be better than I had anticipated. It was an emotional read, and I felt some sympathy towards the protagonist. I can't begin to imagine what it would be like to find a relative, or even a friend, homeless after having not seen them for several years. Jade is also an easy character to connect with and relate to; I am sure we all feel worthless and insecure at some point in our lives.

Whilst I did enjoy Something Like This, I find that the relationship between Jade and Reece did seem a bit rushed and unrealistic. Nevertheless, it was cute. I would recommend this book to those who are looking for a coming-of-age story but want something a bit different, or are into new adult fiction.

Terribly written/conceptualized, seemingly unedited, uninteresting tripe. Seems like a drunken 12 year old sat down one night with a crack pipe, wrote the whole thing in one session and then published it straight away.

The main character, Jadie, is thoroughly unlikable and ridiculous. She alternates between behaving like an elementary age child, an insipid high school girl, a wannabe "cool girl," pathetic and self pitying, a stereotype of her pointlessly specific ethnicity, an idiot and a complete psycho. Poor Reece...what did he instantly fall in love with? Perhaps he'd never seen a girl his age before. It's baffling. This character isn't even the kind of person you fall mistakenly in love with, thinking you can save her...she's the kind you run away from screaming and warning others along the way.

Also, no effort was spent on scene setting or description in this book. I have no clear picture of what the writer intended me to see...I just filled in the blanks with the randomness in my head. It was mostly composed of boring, personality-free dialogue and unsuccessfully angsty internal struggles.

Honestly, I couldn't finish it. I wanted to quit after the first couple pages, but I soldiered on for a while, until I found myself getting angry that the author was wasting my free time at work. I had more fun writing the review. Don't do it...move along.

The idea of the story is intriguing, a woman, Jacie, who had been abandoned by her father and then lost her mother to cancer feels unloved and does not trust anyone. She starts a new jobs that she wasn't really qualified for, meets a handsome man who for some reason seems to fall in love with her at first sight. She is sharing an apartment with 2 other woman, but despite their efforts to include her, she keeps by herself. Then she spots her father, homeless living under a railroad track and starts feeling guilty about not going to help him and thinks she is a terrible person and if anyone finds out about it they will hold it against her. Like I said, the idea is great, unfortunately the writing is not. This manuscript needed a lot of polishing before it was published. Except for one of the roommates, there is little physical description of any of the characters. The dialogues are flat and her behavior is erratic.
I read this as part of an ARC of HAPPILY EVER ALPH: FALLING FOR THE BILLIONAIRE. I don't know why it was including in the collection, as Reece is never described as a billionaire. In fact, nothing about how he makes a living, except that he has written a novel, but hasn't had in published. The whole book is very disjointed and really needed the help of a literary agency, which ironically is where Jacie works.

The basic idea is splendid. A girl with abandonment issues find the person whom abandoned her..her dad.
But the girl drove me bonkers. Her actions at the first ever party. Here is what I would have done if I were Sophie or the other roommate. I would have evicted her. She is supposed to be a grownup but she acts like a misbehaving toddler.
If I were the boy who came over for the first time...it would be my last visit to this flat and the last the brat saw of me if I were the other gals guy I would walk out and not look back. Ever

This scene basically negated the rest of the book for me. At 23 throwing a hissy fit and physically throwing food makes NO SENSE.

The book has plenty of redeeming qualities but this one passage made me honestly dislike the girl I was supposed to be rooting for and wondering at the low standards of the characters alongside her.

Jadie has had a rough life. Her father walked out on her and her mother and then her mother died. She feels like the world is a horrible place and she belongs in it. She keeps to herself and doesn't have any friends. But all of that changes when she is offered a job that she accepts. When she meets her bosses nephew, the connection is instant. But she fights it because she knows she doesn't deserve anything good. Will Reece be able to convince her that they belong together? Will he help her to deal with her feelings towards her father? Will she be able to save him from his own demons?
This was such a great story & I couldn't wait to see how it ended. There is so much more that could have happened & I hope that I will find that in the next book of this series.

This was the first book I've read by Eileen Cruz Coleman, but it won't be my last.
I won't say the two main characters didn't drive me crazy, because they were both such a mess. They did however keep me reading, hoping that eventually they would get it together, and behave like sane rational adults. With all the pain they were both suffering through, that getting it together plan wasn't likely to ever happen, and I finally managed to see beyond the lunacy to the underlying issues. That was when the book really started to get to me.. I was in tears a lot! By the time I got to the end of the book I was hooked.
The book was nothing like I've ever read before, and I'm actually happy I didn't give up on Reece and Jadie.
I look forward to seeing what the second book is about.

An engrossing read! The story is about two people who are carrying emotional baggage and can't seem to move beyond them. How they overcome their emotional issues and the bond they form makes for an interesting read. The scene at the dinner party where Jadie throws a tantrum is absolutely brilliant.....it highlights Jadie to a T......Her abandonment issues, her confusion, bewilderment, her doubts and insecurities, and the feeling that she is back to square one with no one loving her...How she saves the situation and saves her friendships is the first hint of her maturing, of her accepting that her world is now changing, and she can move forward.....absolutely brilliant writing!! This book has made me want to read all of Eileen Cruz Coleman's writing. I highly recommend this book.

I was given an ARC book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.

CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS

I was not incredibly impressed with this book. It was a typical love story of a girl who has had hardships in her past. Nothing incredibly exciting or grab your attention about this story. It was a quick read that left you disappointed with the end. I think the details of the story could have been developed further; more questions answered. I do not recommend this book. It wasn't one of my top stories of the year. I was hoping for more when I was offered this book to read.

Great, heart warming story of a girl and a guy, both trying to get over abandonment issues. One is trying to move forward, but the other just wants ignore the problem.

The premise is good, but the execution still needs a bit of improvement. There were a lot of back stories that I feel were not cohesive with the main story; some issues were still missing closure; and the heroine seems bratty and bitchy sometimes.

Other than those, this is still a promising read. I would still want to check out the author's other work!

This book was a difficult read for me. The level of despair and negativity from Jadie was a bit too much and she could not find her way - falling back into the darkness she surrounds herself with. She was truly a lost person who no longer really had a home. The spun that others saw in her was not visible until much later in the book. I did finish the book and are glad about it as I got to see the other side of her personality. I love the ending although there is still some unsolved issues that I would liked it is was addressed.

This was a great book that captured my interest immediately. I loved the characters crazy interactions and this is why Jadie and Reece were so believable to me. Jadie Santiago was abandoned by her father after her parents got a divorce. Reece Carter, aspiring writer, is Jadie's boss's nephew. We all have some kind of secret we don't want anyone to know about but the secret Jadie has is tearing her apart and affecting her relationships. Can Jadie and Reece survive her secret? I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I won this book for free through Goodreads First Reads program. I thought the description sounded interesting. However this book was pretty blah. First of all, the main character was pretty crazy. She was always talking about her "demons" and overreacting about everything. She was way too emotional and needy. Her and Reese's relationship was totally unrealistic and moved forward way too quickly. This book just wasn't for me.

Something Like This by Eileen Cruz Coleman **** this story grabs you -- if you can stay with it!
This story was a roller coaster of negative life experiences interlaced with wonderful loving people. Jadie's thinking and actions left me frustrated at times to the point of having to take a break from the story. But I stayed with it, and I have to say it was worth it. Disclosure: I read this story as part of the "Happily Ever Alpha" bundle, but wanted to review this story individually as well.

Very immature for a 23-yr old girl that has gone through some of the things she had. They fell into bed waaaaay too quickly with nothing of substance there - and suddenly they love each other?! The 'guilt' over her father's homelessness is annoying as can be. She acts like this is her fault and doesn't even know what has happened that he is in this situation.

You can't help but root for Jade in this book. You instantly like her, and want things to go her way. She just needs to trust and open up a little bit, and she can have it all! And Reece is such a great guy you just want him to have it all as well. They both have secrets, but will learn that by trusting in each other, and their love, that they really aren't so bad after all, and that together they can face anything!

not my usual style, this book is a quick read with many ups and downs. it is written well enough to be a standalone but the main female character is too wrapped in herself to be relatable. i would recommend this to those who like love stories with fairy tale elements.

Jadie & Reece

This was a heart breaking story of two young people struggling with a lot of loss in their lives.

I liked the story but felt a lot was missing from the beginning and the end, lacking depth and character development.

Ok

This is a quick read. The premise is good but Jadie, the heroine, is a hard pill to swallow. Many of her mood swings, reactions and inner musings are inexplicable. However, it is the love story of Reece and Jadie, which ends in a HEA.

Good story

The story is cute, but there was too much sex. I liked the story at first. Girl, jadie lands a dream job. She meets her boss's nephew. They like each other a lot, but both have emotional issues they must get through. The plot is great, sex on screen is May too much.
