The Shape of Silence

I could lie and give you a softer version of this story. Something easier for you to swallow, something that would let you walk away untouched. But you wouldn't want that... would you, little Ghost?

Because when you grow up in rooms where the wrong sentence can cost you something, you learn to sharpen language like a blade. This is me showing you where the truth lives, how it survives in the spaces with the wrong kind of silence. Where pain stops being something you fear and becomes something you understand a little too well.

There are places I ended up that shouldn't exist. Things done in rooms no one ever came back from the same. People who could still have been alive if I had been shaped differently. I'm not gonna try to justify anything, because this isn't about innocence or redemption, it's about what's left when the pretending ends.

Are you ready, little Ghost? Because the moment you start reading is this moment you stop belonging to yourself... and start belonging to me.

I write about places most people are afraid to look at.

My stories explore the darker sides of the human experience - the hidden wounds, forbidden thoughts, obsessions, fears, desires, and the psychological battles that affect who we become.

Through fiction and philosophical reflections, I examine the complexity of the human mind and the truths we often choose to ignore. My books are not afraid to explore taboo subjects, uncomfortable emotions, and the shadows that exists within us all.

I believe stories have the power to confront us, challenge us, and reveal parts of ourselves we may have left forgotten.

Welcome to my world - where silence has a voice, darkness holds meaning, and every scar tells a story.

WOW. I don’t even know where to start with this. The depth, the plot twists, the full range of emotions, just everything about this book is truly amazing. Rowan gives us a front row ticket into his life. Just when you think you know something is going to happen, Rowan drags you left and you never see it coming. As I read this, I felt all the emotions. I cried, I got pissed off, I laughed at a few things, when I thought things were going good, I became happy. Rowan brings you into his life and you truly feel like you are right there with him as everything is going on. As Rowan would say, as a little ghost, just there but not seen by anybody. I recommend this book for those who like the darker books and the ones that truly make you think.

I don't think you realize what you've done.

Or maybe you do. Maybe that's the terrifying part.

You didn't just write a story. You dismantled the comfortable distance between reader and page until there wasn't one anymore. Somewhere along the way, I stopped observing. I started listening. Leaning in. Arguing with myself. And every time I told myself to step back, you gave me another reason not to.

I knew where my morality stood before I opened this book.

Then you introduced me to someone I should have feared. Someone I should have condemned without hesitation... and instead you made me grieve for him. You made me ache for him. You made me understand him in ways I wasn't prepared to. That's a dangerous thing for a writer to ask of a reader—and an even more dangerous thing to pull off successfully.

The cruelest part wasn't the violence. It wasn't the obsession. It wasn't even the tenderness.
It was realizing I was becoming exactly what you warned me about. Little Ghost.

I caught myself defending him before I realized I was doing it. Hoping for him. Hurting with him. Wanting to reach through the pages and tell him that maybe... just maybe... life could have been kinder. And somehow that felt like a betrayal of everything I thought I believed.

Your story doesn't ask to be read. It demands to be felt. Every chapter pulled me further under until I couldn't tell where your words ended and my own thoughts began.

Thank you for refusing to simplify pain into something easier to digest.

And thank you for reminding me that the most frightening monsters aren't the ones we fail to understand... They're the ones we do.

The ending, though...

I genuinely don't have words for it. Which is almost funny, because if there's one thing I never struggle with, it's finding something to say. I yap. Constantly. And somehow you managed to leave me sitting in complete silence, staring at the last page long after I'd finished it.

No book has ever done that to me before.

I sat there remembering all of your quotable moments but one of the several that stayed with me is

"If the only thing keeping you together is the same thing pulling you apart... do you let go? Or do you hold on tighter?"

I’ve tried to write a review for The Shape of Silence for days now and honestly?
No matter how many times I tried to rephrase it, polish it or shorten it… it never felt right.
This is so hard for me. I swear, Rowan… you’re killing me here.
Having my own traumas buried so deeply since I was very young and now being a mum… I genuinely wasn’t prepared for what this book was about to do to me.
There were so many moments where all I could think was, “What if this was my son?”
And that’s where this book completely broke me.
Not because it was shocking for the sake of being shocking. Not because it was graphic. But because it made me realise just how much one childhood, one decision, one person, one kind of silence can shape an entire life.
It made me angry.
It made me sad.
It made me want to scream.
And at the same time, I couldn’t stop reading because I needed him to keep talking. I needed to know what happened to him. I needed to know what he’d been through. I needed to know… if things would ever get better for him.
This is the best book I’ve ever read.
And the first one that has ever made me cry.
Yes Rowan… you officially got your tear.
…or ten.
The single POV. The direct talk to the reader. The things you’re saying and, even more importantly, the way you’re saying them… it didn’t just draw me in, it made me feel like I was living it myself.
I could feel every emotion. Every thought. Every fear, anger, sadness, guilt and hope.
I could literally feel my skin crawling, my heart beating faster, my brain going into complete overdrive trying to figure out what was coming next.
I swear this book had me in a chokehold.
This is, and I will never stop saying it, an absolute masterpiece.
A masterpiece I’ll keep close to my heart forever.
The Shape of Silence isn’t a book you simply read, review and put away.
It’ll make you feel every emotion imaginable.
It’ll mess with your head.
It’ll make you question things.
And whether you want to or not… it’ll make you face your own demons.
It definitely made me face mine.
Deeply buried ones that had absolutely no business resurfacing.
But I’m Rowan’s Little Ghost.
So I decided to be brave.
So if you ever get book recommendations from me, just know your emotional wellbeing is never safe. I’ll happily get my heart broken, cry my eyes out, feel murderous, angry, anxious and completely emotionally wrecked… and then still tell you that you need this book like you need oxygen.

And Rowan…
I’m soooo excited (and slightly terrified) to see what other emotional damage you’re going to cause with your future books.

We all love the red flagged villian in our stories, but this focuses on what shapes one. Written as a confession, spoken to the reader (thats you, little Ghost) gave this a unique twist on what we're typically used to.
But its more than just a confession..
Its an intimate, deeply personal unravelling that gets inside not only Rowans head, but yours too.
He will make you blush, while recounting the kind of trauma that reshapes a person.
He will have you questioning your own morals, then leave you wondering if he was ever a monster at all.
The philosophical style writing, the thought provoking questions, and the raw vulnerability have me SO excited for Rowans next project coming out, Little Ghost.

It was an honor to be part of this ARC team and I can't wait to get my hands on anything else he writes!

From the very beginning, I knew this wasn’t going to be an easy read. This was never a story you could simply pick up and casually go through. It demands your attention, your patience and your willingness to step into some of the darkest parts of the human experience.

And once this story gets its hold on you, there's no escaping it. Not because you have to keep going… but because, somehow, you need to know what happens next.

At its core, The Shape of Silence is a story about pain, trauma, fear, abandonment, survival and the devastating ways the things we go through can shape who we become.

The trigger warnings at the beginning should absolutely be taken seriously. This is not just a dark romance and it's not your typical psychological thriller. Rowan makes sure you understand what kind of emotional journey you are stepping into and every difficult topic is handled with purpose.

Nothing in this story feels random. Every conversation, every detail and every moment of silence matters. As the story unfolds, you start to realise that every piece was placed exactly where it needed to be.

It's the kind of book that makes you question everything, create theories, change your mind and then completely prove you wrong. I spent so much time trying to figure out where the story was going, only to realise it was always several steps ahead of me. And somehow, despite all the emotional damage, I loved every second of it.

The story is divided into three parts and each one somehow convinces you that you have reached your limit. You'll think you can’t hurt anymore, you'll think your heart can’t take another hit. And then the story proves you wrong.

At the centre of everything is a boy who was never given the chance to simply be a boy.
A life shaped by circumstances beyond his control forced him to learn how to survive before he ever had the chance to learn how to live.

He learns to read people, every room he walks into. He struggles, breaks...adapts. And that is what makes him so painfully relatable.

Because beneath all the darkness, this story is about something incredibly human...the desperate need to survive, to find meaning in suffering and to hold on to whatever pieces of ourselves remain after everything tries to take them away.

There were moments when I wanted to cry, to scream. Moments when I wished I could reach through the pages and protect him from everything he was forced to endure. And there were moments when closing the book would have been easier than continuing but I couldn’t. Because by then, this story was no longer just something I was reading. It had become something I was feeling in my core and that feeling wasn’t something I could simply turn off.

The Shape of Silence is dark, painful and deeply unsettling but it's also a story about resilience, humanity and the incredible strength it takes to keep moving forward.

Some stories simply end when you close the book but not this one.
It stays with you in the quiet moments, in the questions it leaves behind and in the emotions you’re not quite ready to let go of. And maybe that is the most powerful thing a story can do...not just entertain us but make us feel, make us reflect and remind us of the fragile, complicated and deeply human parts of ourselves.

Some stories ask for your attention.
The Shape of Silence demands your honesty.
This is one of the rare books that refuses to comfort the reader. It doesn't soften its edges or decorate its pain with beautiful lies. It sits across from you, unwavering, and quietly asks:
"Will you still look at me if I tell you the truth?"
I did.
And I don't think I'll ever be quite the same.
This isn't darkness written for shock value. It isn't trauma packaged as entertainment. Rowan writes suffering with unsettling precision, almost like a surgeon exposing nerves instead of organs. Every sentence feels deliberate. Every revelation lands exactly where it intends to.
There were moments I had to stop reading, not because the prose was difficult, but because it was too accurate. It understood things I wasn't prepared to admit I understood.
The brilliance of this novel isn't simply in what happens.
It's in how it teaches you to observe.
You begin questioning memory. Identity. Survival. The stories we tell ourselves just to make it to tomorrow. Eventually you stop asking "What happened?" and start asking "What does a human mind become when surviving is the only thing it's ever learned?"
That's where the book becomes extraordinary.
The writing itself is breathtaking.
Not ornate.
Not overwritten.
Just devastatingly intentional.
Every chapter feels carved rather than written.
Every metaphor earns its place.
Every silence speaks.
And perhaps that's what affected me most.
Silence becomes a character.
Loneliness becomes architecture.
Trauma becomes language.
By the end, I wasn't crying because I felt sorry for Rowan.
I was crying because the book reminded me that some children don't lose their innocence all at once.
They lose it in careful, measured installments.
One disappointment.
One bruise.
One betrayal.
One silence at a time.
Then there's Zwierek.
Without saying too much, few literary devices have unsettled me the way that relationship did. The moment everything clicked, I didn't feel clever for figuring it out.
I felt heartbroken.
Because suddenly every earlier conversation carried a weight it hadn't before.
And long after the final page...
its silence is still speaking

Some books entertain you.
Some books stay with you.
Then there is this book.
This one will get under your skin and make you question everything you thought you knew. Pushing boundaries you weren't sure you had.

The shape of Silence is the best psychological thriller I've read in a long time.

This book doesn't just ask you to read it. It asks you to doubt yourself and the world around you too.

From the very first page I was hooked. Every time I thought I'd found my footing, Rowan pulled it straight out from under me. I wasn't just questioning the story. I was questioning my own thought process too.
Quotes like

"Most people react too quickly to what disturbs them. They rush to name it, and once they have named it, they think they are safe from it. Spoiler alert, they're not."

Making me look at the world differently.

Reading Rowan's journey from childhood into adulthood gave the story so much depth. It felt raw, honest and unapologetic. Every chapter peeled back another layer, but instead of giving me answers it left me with more questions and that made me love it even more.

I especially loved the reports threaded throughout the story. Because of my job, I found myself analysing them as I read, comparing my own thoughts with what was written.

The whole time I kept asking myself...
Is this real?
Is this fiction?
Is it a mind trying to make sense of itself?
Or is it a truth hiding behind the safety of a story?

While it's written as letters, it never felt like I was reading them. It felt like I was sitting opposite Rowan having a coffee while he slowly unravelled his life in front of me. That intimacy made every page feel heavier and somehow even more haunting.

This isn't the sort of book you finish and move on from.
It lingers.
It follows you.
It leaves you looking at the world just a little differently than you did before.

A huge thank you to Rowan for trusting me with an ARC read. It was a privilege to experience this story.

Now don't mind me while I be a good little ghost and re read this story 👻

I can't form into words the impact that this book had on me. The first impression when I opened this book was the writing. The emotions portrayed through the words and Rowan's ability to describe so vividly what we feel through these pages was impactful. The twist within the book was impressive. The ending was real, it was raw and I absolutely loved it. This was one hell of story. From the very beginning he warns you that it may change you and it did from the first page to the last page.

From the very first page this book gripped me to the point I could not put it down. It's very rare that I read a book straight through, especially considering the lengths of it but this book defied the odds. It made me display all the emotions. It had me in a roller coaster of emotions and that's when you know the story is going to stay with you long after the pages are done.

What absolutely floored me with this book is how Rowan was able to put into words things that I have felt also, emotions that I have suppressed, feelings that I choose to ignore, more importantly how compassion can go a long way. Many parts of this book hit close to home and no other book will be able to compare.

I hope this author writes a million more books because the writing style, the storyline, everything that encompases this writer is utter perfection. He just rose all the way to the top of as my favorite writer.

This book was a masterpiece and you will be doing yourself a disservice if you do not stop and pick up this book.

The Shape of Silence
By: @rowandragomirblack

🕸From the very beginning we are completely pulled into Rowan's world. We see the way trauma impacts a child and the life that unfolds each day after. The way silence can be a coping mechanism and also a survival instinct. How to survive in a world where you aren't wanted. How to survive the darkness that comes after being called a problem, a defect, a freak.

🖤"Breaking is inevitable - the real question is whether anyone sees it happening."

👻Rowan's writing is completely immersive, creating extremely vivid imagery of every graphic detail as well as giving the reader a large role in the story. The reader is Little Ghost and with every page turn you are let in a little at a time, slowly, with intent. At what point will you stop reading and become a part of everything?

🕷"People like you don't just stumble into something like this and stay, not unless there's something in you that recognizes my darkness."

🕸Available now in paperback, kindle and KU. Rowan's debut book is a top read for me and he is now an auto-buy author. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy dark books, those who thrive on darkness that isn't softened or minimized, and readers who enjoy being fully immersed in the story. You don't want to miss this.

✨️As always, check your own triggers prior to consuming any content.

This is an insanely written book which evokes so many emotions and leaves you awe struck. Each page had me take a moments pause as I settled with some of the entries that I read. It makes you look even when you don’t want to and you can’t stop even if you tried.
I have no bias with this book; it was recommended to me, and I went in completely blind. However, this is, without a doubt, the best psychological thriller that I have ever read.

Thank you to the author for bringing this story into the world, there’s so much more that I could say, but by whatever you means you have created an unforgettable masterpiece.

This is the first book Rowan has written. Chef's kiss! It’s a psychological thriller with a touch of dark romance. Rowan tells his story to "Little Ghost" (the reader); he draws you into the narrative and occasionally converses with Little Ghost—that’s you—making it feel as though he’s sitting right across from you. Phenomenal! The book is divided into three parts: childhood, the teenage years, and the period from then to the present. It stirs up deep emotions—a truly unique experience. This book holds a special place in my heart! I can't wait for the other two installments of the trilogy!

The Shape of Silence is one of those books that you go into blind, and it resets your way of thinking. The whole book had me questioning everything and that is why I loved it so much. Thought provoking, tense, emotional... It had anything and everything I could've wanted. 🕷️

Savage, with moments that had me taking breaks to stare at the wall, it was an incredible read that I. ATE. UP. 🕸️

Was it a memoir? Fiction? Non-fiction? Partly fact? All fact? That was my thought process when I left the last page. This was easily one of my top reads of the year. 🖤

I could sit here and ramble for days about what makes The Shape of Silence so extraordinary, but I’ll try to keep this concise.

The Shape of Silence is one of those books that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page. Rowan’s writing is the perfect balance of raw devastation and unyielding compassion. By telling the story with YOU as an active participant, he draws you so deeply into the narrative that you’re not just reading it, you feel it. Every emotion lands with an intimacy that few books ever achieve.

The subject matter is dark, painful, and brutal, yet you never feel alone. Instead, you feel seen, understood, and validated. It’s rare to find a story that reaches into the quietest parts of you and makes you feel less isolated, but The Shape of Silence does exactly that. It’s heartbreaking, cathartic, and unforgettable.

If Goodreads would allow it I would have given this infinite stars. This book will forever change you.
