I absolutely LOVED The Divine and the Damned. I fell headfirst into this world, became obsessed with these characters, and was already completely seated for whatever Eglentine Briar wanted to throw at me next.
But The Sinner and the Saint???
THIS WAS EVERYTHING I NEEDED AND MORE.
When I finished this book, my very first thought was genuinely, “No. Give them back. I need more.”
I was actually UPSET that it was over.
And then approximately 0.2 seconds later, my brain remembered that final spicy scene and all coherent thought immediately left the building.
Ember is a badass.
That was extremely hot.
I would like more of that specific scenario immediately, please and thank you.
And all I am going to say about THAT is:
✨ LADY V STILL GOT IT. ✨
If you don't understand what that means, unfortunately there is only one solution.
You must read the book.
Hurry up and get your demon smut today. ❤️
Let's talk about the sinner...
We met Ember in The Divine and the Damned, so I thought I had some idea of what we were getting with her.
I WAS WRONG.
Well…not entirely wrong.
But Briar gave us so much more the deeper we got—
AYOOOOOOOO.
Anyway. Moving on. 😂
There is so much underneath Ember's attitude, confidence, sass, sexuality, and power. Getting to see the different sides of her—including the painful ones—completely changed the way I understood her.
She has experienced things that could have swallowed her whole, but instead of allowing those experiences to become the entirety of who she is, Ember takes that pain and finds power within herself.
And THAT was what made me fall completely in love with her.
She's powerful without being invulnerable. She's confident without being untouched by her past. She can be hilarious, filthy, compassionate, protective, angry, soft, traumatized, loving, and an absolute MENACE.
Basically?
My spirit animal.
I support women's rights AND women's wrongs, especially when the woman in question is a succubus.
And then we have the saint: Felix.
MY PRECIOUS BEAN.
My precious, sweet, wonderful, hot-as-hell bean.
Felix has such a beautiful heart, and the way he cares about other people made me love him almost immediately. But what REALLY got me was discovering how many sides there are to him.
Because yes, he's sensitive.
Yes, he's sweet.
Yes, he's compassionate.
But apparently our precious bean can ALSO be sassy, kinky, chaotic, and a little wild.
SIR???
I was unfamiliar with your game.
And I think that's part of why Felix and Ember work so beautifully together.
Felix brings out this softness in Ember without ever making her feel like she needs to become softer overall. Ember brings out different sides of Felix without changing the core of who he is.
They just…fit.
They're this beautifully chaotic, goofy little power couple whose happiness practically radiates off the page, while their relationship simultaneously gives both of them room to heal pieces of themselves that desperately needed it.
Watching their inner children find safety in one another absolutely destroyed me in the BEST way.
And the exact moment Felix permanently secured his place in my heart?
The mosh pit.
That's it.
That's the explanation.
READ THE BOOK, DANG IT.
THE SINNER AND THE SAINT OF IT ALL
This is also where I think the title becomes SO interesting.
Felix is “the Saint.”
There's this expectation attached to that word that he should be inherently good. Pure. Perfect.
But Felix is painfully, beautifully HUMAN.
He makes mistakes. He has hurt people. He doesn't always make the right decision just because his intentions are good.
And then there's Ember.
“The Sinner.”
She's part demon. She's already condemned by the label attached to what she is.
Except when you actually KNOW Ember?
There's so much goodness in her.
So much compassion.
So much love.
So much willingness to protect the people around her.
And I LOVE what that does to the idea of “sinner” versus “saint.”
Because what actually makes someone good?
Is it what they are?
What they're called?
The mistakes they've made?
Their intentions?
Or is it the choices they continue making and what they do with the person they've become?
For a book that also contains an impressive amount of demon smut, Briar had me sitting there contemplating morality and the human condition FAR more often than I anticipated.
THE RANGE.
AND THEN THIS BOOK MADE ME CRY.
There are some genuinely difficult subjects explored throughout this story, including SA, racism, and issues affecting LGBTQ+ youth, and this is where I need to temporarily put the screaming aside.
Briar handles sensitive topics with an incredible amount of care.
I can't speak from my own perspective on many of these subjects, but I was taken aback by the way trauma surrounding SA was approached. It never felt like something included simply for shock value. It wasn't unnecessarily overexplained.
Instead, the focus remained on the person.
The feelings.
The aftermath.
The complicated process of understanding what happened, reclaiming pieces of yourself, experiencing intimacy again, and discovering what safety and love can actually look like.
Knowing that Briar put extensive research into approaching this subject carefully—including listening to survivors—made the intentionality behind that writing even more meaningful to me.
And then there's one seemingly small moment between Ember and Nicki.
I'm not telling you what she says.
You need to experience it yourself.
But I stopped reading.
I cried.
And then I called my 11-year-old brother.
Not because what I had just read was devastating, but because it felt so profoundly HEALING that I needed someone I love to have those words too.
Sometimes a character says something meant for another fictional character and somehow those words crawl right through the page and into your heart.
That happened to me here.
And I wanted my little brother to have a little piece of that magic too.
That moment is going to stay with me for a very, very long time.
BUT DON'T WORRY. THERE ARE ALSO DEMONS DOING DEMON THINGS.
Because Briar somehow understands that after emotionally scrambling your brains, perhaps you require a palate cleanser.
So she'll give you something thoughtful and devastating…
then some ridiculous banter…
then something sweet…
then make you laugh…
and occasionally somebody's clothes disappear.
BALANCE. ✨
And listen.
The spice?
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
GOOD SHIZZZZZZ.
But what impressed me most wasn't simply that it was hot.
The intimacy actually MEANS something.
There's exploration. Trust. Communication. Vulnerability. Reclamation. There are characters learning one another and learning themselves. There is healing from previous negative sexual experiences and discovering intimacy that comes from genuine love and safety.
There is a moment I can really only describe as making love to her soul, and if that doesn't tell you how much more is happening underneath all the horny demon shenanigans, I don't know what will.
And while I COULD continue preaching about the importance of everyone having adequate access to quality demon smut...
I'm going to save that public service announcement for later.
Trust me.
It's important.
AND THE WORLD GOT SO MUCH BIGGER.
One of my favorite things about this sequel is how much it expanded everything The Divine and the Damned introduced.
We get a broader understanding of how these realms operate and conduct their business on Earth—especially Hell—along with more magic, more history, more understanding of different beings and their hierarchy, and even more insight into things like traveling between realms.
It fleshed out SO much of this universe.
And even though Ember and Felix's story left me feeling incredibly satisfied, THERE IS STILL ONE PROBLEM, MS. BRIAR.
WE ARE STILL ON THE CLIFF.
YOU KNOW THE ONE.
THE CLIFF YOU LEFT ME DANGLING FROM IN BOOK ONE.
MA'AM.
MY FINGERS ARE TIRED.
I HAVE BEEN HOLDING ON FOR AN ENTIRE BOOK.
SEND HELP.
And apparently there are SEVEN books planned for this series, so I guess I'm simply going to continue living here now.
And a LITTLE LOVE FOR THE WOMAN RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MADNESS, even though she left me on that cliff.....
I also can't talk about this book without talking about Eglentine herself.
I originally met Briar through mutual friends, and before I really even knew her, I was OBSESSED with the cover of The Divine and the Damned.
Then she sent me a copy so a friend and I could buddy read it, which genuinely meant so much to me.
We talked here and there afterward, and now with The Sinner and the Saint out, we've gotten to know each other even more and have even launched a weekly event together.
And the more I've gotten to know her, the more obvious one thing has become:
This woman LOVES books.
You can practically feel it radiating off of her.
She loves writing. She loves storytelling. She loves the creative process. And her books feel like they come from this place of, “I'm going to pour my entire heart and soul into this weird, beautiful thing I love creating, and if somebody else finds it and loves it too? That's incredible.”
THAT is the kind of art I love.
She's also such a passionate supporter of other indie authors and genuinely seems to want the entire bookish community around her to succeed.
And on top of ALL OF THAT?
Badass alternative queer witchy QUEEEEEEN.
I adore this woman.
Which makes me even happier that I can confidently scream about this book because friendship aside:
SHE ABSOLUTELY ATE.
If you like dark fantasy romance, demons and supernatural beings, Heaven-and-Hell worldbuilding, morally complicated characters, queer representation, emotional healing, ridiculous banter, found moments of softness, characters reclaiming themselves, romance with actual emotional substance, and enough spice to make you periodically stare into the middle distance and reevaluate your life choices?
HELLO.
YOUR MEAL HAS ARRIVED.
That being said:
PLEASE CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.
Seriously.
This book deals with heavy subjects, and while I personally thought they were handled with incredible care, that doesn't mean they won't be triggering for another reader. Briar provides detailed warnings for a reason. Protect your peace and make an informed decision before diving in.
And if you DO dive in?
Enjoy your meal. 😌
Because six months from now I already know exactly what will still be living rent-free in my head:
The mosh pit.
Making love to her soul.
And…
Lady V.
That's it.
No explanation necessary.
FINAL VERDICT:
The Divine and the Damned made me fall in love with this world.
The Sinner and the Saint made me never want to leave it.
It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me think about trauma, morality, healing, intimacy, identity, and what it actually means to be “good.”
It gave me two characters who felt beautifully imperfect individually and somehow even more beautiful together.
It gave me an expanded universe I'm DYING to learn more about.
It gave me tenderness.
It gave me chaos.
It gave me healing.
It gave me Lady V.
And somehow, amongst ALL of that, Eglentine Briar has also continued her courageous humanitarian mission to address an issue that has gone ignored for FAR too long.
Which means before I leave you, I need to make one final, extremely important public service announcement.
Please imagine the sad music beginning now.
🎵 In the aaaaarms of the angeeeels… 🎵
Every day, innocent readers across the world go to sleep having consumed absolutely ZERO demon smut.
They wander our streets.
They go to work.
They make dinner.
They lie awake at night.
Completely unaware of what they're missing.
But there is hope.
For the small price of one copy of The Sinner and the Saint, YOU can help end this needless suffering.
You too can put demon smut into the hands of a reader in need.
So if someone asks me whether they should read this book, I'm simply going to place a copy firmly into their hands, look them directly in the eyes, and say:
“You poor soul. You've gone all this time without demon smut? What a shame. Now shoo and devour your meal.”
First off, a huge thank you to Eglentine Briar for the ARC of The Sinner and the Saint!
This book was wild. I devoured it in a single day. This book exceeded my expectations.
The banter and internal monologue had me laughing out loud from start to finish. Ember-the Sinner, the succubus demon- is fierce, hilarious, unapologetically seductive, and delightfully unhinged. Then there’s Felix-the Saint-a human. He’s kind, empathetic, and patient, yet somehow manages to get completely under Ember’s skin. And can we talk about the irony? Felix may be a saint in the streets, but he’s definitely a sinner in the sheets. 🔥
The chemistry between these two is incredible, and the spice is hot without overshadowing the story. I lost count of how many times I laughed, kicked my feet, gasped in shock. And Chapter 26? Let’s just say… the revenge was chef’s kiss.
But beneath the humor, chaos, and steamy romance is a surprisingly emotional story. At its core, this book is about allowing someone to truly see you—being completely “naked” emotionally and embracing every part of who you are, who you didn't realize you were and a little bit of revenge mixed in. When secrets finally come to light, Ember and Felix are forced to face trials that push their bond to its absolute breaking point and test their connection.
I loved every second of this story, but please don’t skip the trigger warnings. They are extensive for a reason, and this book explores some heavy topics!
I also really appreciated how the story naturally incorporated queer representation, political themes, and current social issues that many people face every day. Those moments added so much heart and depth to an already unforgettable read.
If you’re looking for a hilarious, spicy, and an emotional paranormal romance with a unique premise and characters you’ll fall in love with, The Sinner and the Saint is one I highly recommend.
Right from the get go I was laughing! Ember is so snarky and I loved her voice! Lots of spicy bits sprinkled throughout. A sweet love story. Very well connected to the first book in the series. The world-building and concept is very good. I really enjoyed the dialogue and banter between characters. I look forward too more!
Rich plot with a side of smutt. The satire continues, and I Want More!
So. Much. Fun!
I love watching characters find themselves, and Eglentine delivers! I connected with the characters in so many ways... each with their own distinct voice, desires and downfalls.
The fantasy aspects? EXCITING! If you need your angels and demons to be black and white beings, you're in the wrong place. The way Eglentine explores traditional mythos through a modern lens is unique and thought provoking. The celestial (?) beings have feelings, jobs, and internal conflicts that I believe modern readers can connect with. If you're into that and so much more, I highly recommend her series!
I genuinely loved this book, from the first page, I knew I was in good hands. The character voices are so distinct that Felix and Ember feel like real people rather than fictional creations, even though Ember is a literal demon, and every chapter left me wanting to spend more time with them. After I finished reading this morning, I have found myself still thinking about them all day, which is one of the highest compliments I can give a novel.
What impressed me most was how clear the emotional message remained beneath all of the humor, romance, fantasy, and darkness. The themes of compassion, redemption, acceptance, and choosing love over judgment never felt forced or preachy, they emerged naturally through the characters and their choices. The tone never lost sight of what it wanted to say.
I honestly struggled to find anything to critique. The pacing kept me engaged, the dialogue was sharp and authentic, and the emotional beats consistently landed. There were moments that made me laugh, moments that made me hurt for the characters, and moments that completely caught me off guard.
This is one of those rare books where the plot is memorable, but it's the people who stay with you. Felix and Ember have lingered in my mind ever since I started reading, and I suspect they'll stay there for a long time. An outstanding read, and one I won't hesitate to recommend.
It’s not often that the second book in a series is as good or better than the first…
Eglentine Briar did a fantastic job on making book 2 even better than book 1!!! The Sinner and the Saint had me hooked and on edge!! Ember is a whole entire vibe and I loved her character arc!! Felix… sweet sweet Felix!!!
This isn’t just an entertaining book! This is a book about healing and overcoming! It’s about facing those who hurt you and getting that sweet revenge.
Make sure to check your trigger warnings as there are sensitive topics in here that may be hard for some!
Do not miss this book!! It is so beautifully written!!!
Ok yall if you like demons, angels, and magic (oh my) this is totally for you. Our FMC Ember is a succubus and on a mission. She runs into or he runs into her, either way they run into each other our MMC Felix. He’s the cinnamon roll to her hot cinnamon sassy personality. I swear if he smelled like flowers and sunshine then she smelled like fire and brimstone.
The plot is captivating. I lost myself in this book for a couple of days and no regrets. Adulting? Don’t know her.
I’m not usually a fan of golden retriever men but Felix kinda did it for me. He was just such a good boy.
10/10 recommend if you want to laugh a little, cry a little, and get turned on a little.
