A post-apocalyptic mystery thriller set beneath a dead world, where hierarchy, murder, and control decide who gets to live.
The world ended six months ago.
Deep beneath the Arizona desert, fifty-six survivors live in a luxury bunker built by billionaire inventor Sebastian Crest. The surface is poisoned, the carefully selected residents are trapped, and every rule exists to keep what remains of humanity alive. Then a man is murdered. But the victim isn’t one of the fifty-six. He’s not supposed to be there at all…
Will one murder turn the last refuge of humanity against itself?
Lockdown is Book One in Sean McLachlan’s Bunker series, a dark dystopian thriller for readers who love Hugh Howey, Blake Crouch, and stories set in sealed societies where truth is controlled, survival is rationed, and one impossible death can bring the whole system down.

🪦 THE BODY
Apparently surviving the end of civilization was not enough stress. Now everyone has to deal with each other too. Which, frankly, may be the worse option. Lockdown takes a group of people, seals them away from everything familiar, adds secrets, suspicion, and a very serious problem, then watches everyone slowly realize that being chosen for safety does not mean being chosen for peace. Very comforting.
🔪 FIRST INCISION
The setup pulled me in quickly because there is something immediately unsettling about a place that is supposed to be secure but clearly is not. That kind of contradiction does a lot of work. You already have a limited space, limited freedom, and a social structure that depends on everybody behaving. So naturally, someone decides to make the entire situation much worse. I respect the commitment to bad timing.
🩸 THE AUTOPSY
What I liked most was the feeling that everyone is carrying something. A grudge. A secret. An opinion they should probably keep to themselves. Maybe all three. The story keeps you questioning what people know, what they are hiding, and how much trust is actually possible when nobody can simply leave. That last part matters. Normal disagreements are one thing. Disagreements when the door is not an option? Much more festive.
🫀 STILL HAD A PULSE
The characters worked because they felt stressed in believable ways. Not everyone reacts the same when their world gets very small. Some people get quiet. Some get controlling. Some get curious. Some apparently decide, “You know what this situation needs? More problems.” It gives the story enough tension that even ordinary conversations can feel loaded. I also liked that the mystery does not exist separately from the setting. The environment makes every answer more complicated. Very efficient. Very unpleasant.
🦴 WHAT BROKE
There were a few moments where I wanted certain relationships and dynamics explored a little more, but that may be partly because the setup gives you a lot to wonder about. The book moves at a good clip, and by the time I had settled into the rhythm, I was already far too nosy about what everyone was hiding. At that point, I was committed.
☠️ CAUSE OF DEATH
Lockdown is tense, claustrophobic, and full of the kind of mistrust that makes closed-door settings work so well. The mystery gives you something concrete to chase, while the bigger questions keep nibbling at the edges. Who has control? Who deserves it? Who is lying? And how long before someone makes a truly spectacular decision? Mr. Sean McLachlan gives you enough answers to feel satisfied while still leaving plenty of room for the next book to cause additional problems. Because apparently surviving once was not enough.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This story presents a depiction of what sort of preparation have been made in case of a nuclear war where humanity would be eliminated. It presents a portrayal where several millionaires and billionaires have prepared bunkers for a special group of people to live in while the atmosphere outside is not livable. The story specifically depicts the life in the bunker of billionaire Mr. Crest. Things go normally until one day the murder of an individual who was not part of the bunker is discovered. A group led by Jake begins to look into who was responsible. What they learned in the end had major implications that impacted their bunker, but instead everyone in the group.
Read along and discover what the group discovered, what danger they faced as they searched and who was killed, by whom and why. The ending is well done and provides answers. This book is well worth the read, don't miss out!
Lockdown by Sean McLachlan is a short, quick and entertaining read. I enjoyed that it wasn’t overly in-depth or bogged down with unnecessary detail, while still giving enough description of the setting and characters to keep me engaged and wanting to continue reading until the end.
It’s an easy book to get through, and I found the concept fun to imagine as the story unfolded. My one criticism is that explaining so much of the technology and infrastructure with “billionaires built it” felt a little lazy and could have used a bit more explanation.
I also noticed several typos throughout the book, so I think another round of editing would definitely benefit it.
Overall, I enjoyed it and give it 4 stars. I would have given 3.5 if Amazon allowed half stars.
A suspenseful and tense story following Jake who along with 55 people are chosen to live under ground in a series of tunnels in a luxury bunker built by a billionaire called Sebastian Crest after a apocalyptic event.
When a stranger is found dead Jake enlists help from Elena a botanist and engineer called Peter and Crest's security man Kade to investigate how a stranger managed to find a way in.
As they investigate they discover new levels in the bunker and new tunnels with locked doors which only Crest has the codes for. Jake wonders if their are other tunnels or bunkers that Crest is hiding from people.
Looking forward to the next book.
Would recommend for a gripping story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A postapocalyptic murder mystery thriller, following on from the politicians destroying the world when the zillionaires and billionaires saw the end approaching and set up a series of self-contained bunkers in the Arizona desert. Each bunker was self-contained, the residents thought, but were headed by the boss – the one with so much money they were accustomed to control and the residents were subjected to a strange set of rules and regulations. When the bosses barman hears vandalism in the bar and then discovers a body in a stair well, the story really gets up and running with investigations being carried out by a team of four which includes the barman and his pregnant girlfriend. An entertaining story with twists and turns and some violence thrown in for good measure.
A nuclear blast has brought the world as we know it to an end, leaving only a handful of underground bunkers built by the ultra-wealthy. Inside one of these fortified sanctuaries, a bartender begins to suspect that something sinister is taking place.
What starts as a nagging suspicion soon develops into a dangerous search for the truth. As secrets emerge, he finds himself caught in a web of intrigue, murder, mystery, and mayhem.
Fast-paced and suspenseful, this is a gripping story that will keep you turning the pages to discover what is really happening beneath the surface.
A well written post-apocalyptic thriller with a good storyline and a cast of strong realistic characters. Contains a sealed society where the truths are controlled. Has plenty of action and suspense. A page turning read that I would definitely recommend. Will be interesting where you can take Jake and friends in the next thriller.
The initial introduction caught my interest because of an extra resident. The post-apocalyptic story line made me think of Silo. Well written! Definitely worth the read! The rest are on my Amazon Wishlist!
