Mr. Allen knows how to write Southern fiction that captivates you and immerses you. Unravelling several intertwining mysteries throughout the book against a backdrop of rural beauty, poverty, racism, and grief, might seem like a very tall order but Dream River pulls it off. I was thoroughly drawn into the stories and could not put it down. Highly recommend.
Courtney Allen knows how to tell a good story and he certainly does this in his latest novel, Dream River, which chronicles the relationships and bonds of a family through several generations. The central character is Sam, who suffers a lifechanging unforeseen tragedy during his childhood which affects him throughout his life. This tragedy affects not only Sam and his family, but the Southern community in which it occurs. The storyline addresses many issues and topics including political and racial tensions, alcoholism, the effects of war, love, and forgiveness. The characters are well-developed and Allen gives a meaningful account of the events and the forces that affect them. The plot follows Sam from his childhood to his adulthood and realistically depicts the changes within Sam and with the world around him. Beautifully written, the passages describing nature in particular, are poetic and haunting. So if you want to read a good story that will emotionally link you with the characters, Dream River will not disappoint you.
The River in Sam's memory follows the generation of one family through loss, grief, and death. Sams father returns home to find forgiveness land and understanding. Sams won son Will faces uncertainty in his health. His grandfather steps up to save his life. The Family is united more than ever before.
I want to thank the author for sending me this finished book.
As always, what a fantastic ride with Courtney Allen through the 1950s-1960s American South! We visit with members of the McRae and Rindelson families across parts of Georgia and South Carolina, spend time in the tiny town of Clayton, GA, and take an intimate look into the lives of those folks in that day and age. It is a tale to warm your heart - and break it - an intimate peek into a forgotten fold in time, into a life left behind when the rest of the world - and especially the U.S. - was experiencing the Age of Aquarius with the Beatles and MTV. It is a time I was very lucky to experience - and would have liked to save in a bottle for my children to experience. Instead, I will gift them Courtney Allen books. They too are a touch of heart and family and continuity, a reminder to remember. REVIEWED on September 27, 2027, at Goodreads, AmazonSmile, Barnes&Noble, Kobo, and BookBub.
Courtney Allen has done it again. The story telling places the reader directly into the story as though they were there. Detailed life in the rural area of the country and the faults and foibles of the inhabitants make for most interesting reading. Dream River is one of his best. Filled with much emotion, mystery and a surprise conclusion. A very, very good read.
I loved this book. It was gifted to me by the author because I had read and reviewed another of his books. I love historical fiction and this brought in history from several different times in history and about different kinds of history. Can't wait to read another!
Dream River is a book that keeps your attention due its frequent plot changes. The book kept my attention and I enjoyed reading another Courtney Allen book!.
