Somewhere Only We Know is the first book in the Kindred Meadows series written by Caitlin Klassen. This book was beautiful, heart warming, emotional, powerful, and heart breaking. Caitlin had me in tears for the majority of this book, I couldn't turn a page without crying because the characters and their stories had me in an emotional choke hold. I mainly wanted to read this book because that beautiful cover caught my attention, but little did I know that I would be an emotional wreck the whole entire time. Before I forget to mention because it's not labeled as such, this book is a young adult love story, some of the choices the characters made were very immature and selfish, but as many of us know young love is very messy. I have never read anything by this author before, but I need book two immediately. I can't recommend this book enough, if you are looking for a messy love story between two young people that have had their lives completely changed, then you need to mark your calendars for July 22nd, 2026 because you won't want to miss out on this emotional story. Grab yourselves a warm cup of peppermint tea, a few boxes of tissues, and a warm fluffy blanket to curl up with this emotional and beautiful book, because once you start reading you won't want to stop. Please be kind to yourself and mindful of your mental health, this book does deal with heavy topics that can be triggering for some readers, so please check the trigger warning's before reading, they will also be listed down below in my review.

Hazel Fields lost her brother Denny to a bull trampling accident at a rodeo after his bull Wild Red got spooked and wouldn't go into his pen, instead he ran all over Denny instantly killing him. Denny died doing what he loved, he chose a life of danger to cope with the pain caused by their childhood- both of their parents ran from the family leaving their grandma Fran to care for both of them. Will's family and Denny built a tree house for Hazel's twelfth birthday and carved a "W" into the wood after it was freshly built, this tree house was always Hazel and Will's favorite place. Will also gifted Hazel a pair of cowgirl boots with sunflowers stitched on them for her sixteenth birthday, y'all this man is truly such a sweetheart and so thoughtful, these personalized gifts he came up with for Hazel truly melted my heart. Will's heart turned to ash when Denny died and Hazel ran away and never looked back. Now Will lives on the property and Grandma Fran made him co-owner of the bed and breakfast, but he still helps run his family's farm. Now that Hazel is back in Kindred Meadows, Will is a problem solver, he just wants to help Hazel no matter how badly she hurt him when she ran away and never returned any of his calls or text messages. Willard Lewis has the biggest heart. No matter how badly he's been hurt, his willing to put that hurt aside for now so he can help Hazel. I loved Will from the very beginning, he was always such a kind hearted sweetie pie.
Hazel and Will- where do I start with these two? They were messy, they were funny, they were lovable, but most importantly they were just two broken souls after losing Denny. When they were teenagers, Hazel carved a small "H" on every single hat Will owns. Will is named after a side character in Footloose which quickly became Hazel's favorite movie after she learned that fact from Will's mom. Hazel and Will haven't spoken in five years after she raw away from grief, now that Hazel is back in town there's an invisible force between them. Will is angry and hurt, he just wants answers as to why Hazel ran away and never communicated with her family and friends. Will's words are like a tattoo, they are permanent and softly spoken. If Hazel decides to return to Kindred Meadow's for good, Fran's will states that Hazel and Will are expected to share ownership of the bed and breakfast and the cabin on the property for three months before Hazel can have full ownership of both. Rory and Will are both skeptical that Hazel will run from town again, but they are both doing their best to step up and help Hazel despite how much she hurt them. Will's nickname for Hazel has always been Haze. While Hazel is back she finds a special companion- Will's border collie Diesel. Will is Hazel's safety net, he allows Hazel to let her emotions fall freely without embarrassment, little do they know they are both healing each other while having Energizer Bunny sexathons. "You have my heart and I have yours. I will hold the one that hurts for you, and you can carry the comfortable one".

This was a cute, short and quick little cowboy romance.
I loved the premise even though it was crazy sad from the beginning. I loved the side characters and the small town vibes, I just didn’t like the FMC and her actions. She infuriated me a bit. I hated what she did and think Willard deserved better. It all ended up working out in the end and I did like will a lot so it’s ok. As a whole, the book was a cute little spicy romance.

I didn’t like that she only came back after her grandma passed. What was that all about? She left cause her brother died but she comes back after her grands is gone and only so she can get the bed and breakfast and house? If you look at the bigger picture, It’s messed up.

She has to face all the people she left behind and figure out if there is a place for her back home.
Will’s brothers, Bentley and Jackson along with Rory, the FMC’s childhood best friend will easily have their own book in this series! I can’t wait to spend more time with these characters.

4.5 🌟I really enjoyed this book! The constant love Will shows Hazel, the messy raw feeling Hazel finally faces after YEARS of running. I loved the small town aspects of the story and the B&B. This is the first book I’ve read of Caitlin’s but I’m looking forward to more in the future!

I actually did not expect to love this one as much as I did. But it was the perfect small town, cowboy romance, it’s always been you, brother’s best friend. All the things. The next one can’t come soon enough!

She absolutely loses it when her brother dies and ends up running away. Will is completely devastated - he basically lost his best friend and the girl he loves. Five years later, Hazel’s grandma has passed away, so she comes back to Kindred Meadows to face everything. She finds out that her grandma has left her the family bed & breakfast, but the will states she must run the business alongside Will

wow wow wow this was literally just the right small town cowboy romance I needed omg
When the Authors note mentioned keeping a box of tissues nearby, i didnt listen but I should’ve because oh boy, I was bawling like a baby, especially in the first few chapters of Hazel being back. Hazel was giving such The View Between Villages (extended version specifically) by Noah Kahn, especially at the beginning and god i just love her so much. She’s my girl till the day i die. Not to mention that gorgeous cowboy AUGHHHH NEED HIM or one of his brothers tbh…
Then the end epilogue scene. It killed me, let’s just say I bawled my eyes out to say the very least.
also can we all take a moment for this gorgeous cover, it genuinely looks so beautiful and I knew from the minute I saw it that I needed to read it and safe to say it did not disappoint and I CANT WAITTT for the next one 🤭🤭

I really enjoyed this book. I dealt with some real-life problems but still felt romantic. I appreciated that Hazel didn’t just come home and everything was immediately fine and back to how it was before she left. The yearning the two main characters had for one another tugs at your heart. But because of the dual POV, you can understand why they can’t just jump back in.
Strengths
This book deals with difficult real-life issues in a well-rounded way. It brings up grief, absent parents, and revisiting traumatic events. I think Caitlin did a great job touching on these issues but not going over the top in making them the focus. The relationships between the characters remained the focus. The sex scenes were tasteful but playful, and you could tell Will and Hazel were making up for lost time.

The only thing this book lacked was more pages! I felt it could have been just a few chapters longer. It would have allowed for a bit more development of Will and Hazel's relationship. Even with it being a bit shorter, I did not feel the story was rushed in any way.

This was such an emotional second-chance romance. Caitlin Klassen created a story that beautifully explores grief, forgiveness, healing, and finding your way back to the people who have always felt like home. From the very beginning, I was invested in Hazel and Will's journey, and there were several moments that genuinely brought tears to my eyes.
What I appreciated most was that Hazel's return didn't magically fix everything. Five years of heartbreak, unanswered questions, and unresolved grief couldn't simply disappear overnight, and the story allowed both Hazel and Will the space to work through those emotions together. Their reunion was messy, heartfelt, and incredibly believable, making every step toward rebuilding their relationship feel earned.
Will was easily my favorite part of the book. His quiet strength, unwavering patience, and genuine kindness made him impossible not to root for. Even after everything that had happened, his instinct was still to protect Hazel and help her find her footing again. Watching him balance his own heartbreak while giving Hazel the grace she needed to heal made him such a memorable hero.
The small-town setting added so much warmth to the story. Between the family-owned bed and breakfast, lifelong friendships, lovable side characters, and one very adorable Border Collie named Diesel, Kindred Meadows quickly became a place I never wanted to leave. The dual POV also added wonderful emotional depth, allowing both Hazel's guilt and Will's lingering heartbreak to shine through in equal measure.
If I had one small wish, it would simply be for more time with these characters. I would have loved a few extra chapters to further develop their relationship after everything they endured together because I wasn't quite ready to say goodbye.
Somewhere Only We Know is a heartfelt, emotional romance that reminds us healing isn't a straight path, but sometimes home is exactly where we need to be to find ourselves again.

You know those books that leave you thinking about them for a good long while after you’ve read them? I can promise that “Somewhere Only We Know” will certainly be one of those books for me. It’s a book that you need tissues for right out of the gate but it’s soooo worth it!! SWOK will tear your heart apart and will put it back together while Willard and Hazel heal each other…
~ SHE’s the one who leaves and turns his world upside down. But it’s not just his heart that gets broken when she does, his whole family is lost without her.
~ HE stays and takes care of their families; and never stops looking for her or waiting for her to come home!!
~ Will & Hazel’s story is one for the ages; it’s childhood romance and second chance, with a ton of ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’. They know each other to their bones 😍
~ Hazel’s brother always told her that their family was just born for leaving and running… and she does. The hard part is the coming home, but Will is right where he’s always been… loving her.

This book was achingly sweet, the romance was fast paced but there was enough information about the characters’ past sprinkled in throughout the book to make it feel like you as a reader where seeing the entire story, and it was done in a way that wasn’t in your face or boring, the flow and pacing of the story was very well done making this book incredibly easy to read. I also deeply appreciated that the open door romance was hot while still being a part of the characters’ healing and connection with each other - it wasn’t overdone or in your face, and it didn’t overtake the parts of the story where it was used as a significant turning point in the character’s relationship.
Moving on to tropes I’m not usually a fan of: second-chance-romance, and childhood-friends-to-lovers. Consider me converted, overjoyed, I fully stand behind whatever author did here to set fire to the dark cloud over my heart. There were many heavy issues covered in this book including trauma, grief and abandonment, all these and more were expressed in a way that were visceral and made it so easy to relate to these characters.
I giggled at the out of this world flirting these characters unleashed, I kicked my feet at the teasing, I said “awe” out loud an ungodly amount of times, but I also cried like a baby. I may never be the same again, no one makes me cry like Caitlin Klassen.

I received a review copy and these are my thoughts:
Heartbreaking and healing. Somewhere only we knows kicks-off breaking your heart and leaving you in tears, but as the story progresses, it's put back together again, through a second chance romance where they MCs were just meant to be and a found family to heal all wounds.
I enjoyed the pace and this was also a relatively short read. After tragedy strikes, Hazel runs, leaving behind everything and everyone, including the love of her life, her best and her grandmother. Five years later, she returns home to the small town of Kindred Meadows, after her grandmother passes away, and is forced to face all that she left behind.
Hazel lost her way and though everyone in town might have been a tad too quick to forgive her, I get it. She was part of the "extended family" that made up the small town of Kindred Meadows. Everyone knew of Hazel's hardships growing up, her love for her family's bed and breakfast and her love for Willard. But at 18, she wasn't strong enough to face more heartache. Though she may have been forgiven for forsaking everyone who loved her, she still needed to mend relationships and herself.
Hazel's character not only grows into a reliable and steady version of herself as she takes up her place at the B&B, she also goes on a much needed healing journey.
Willard was the definition of "he fell hard". He and Hazel were childhood best friends and life long loves. It was clear Willard still loved her even after everything that had happened. He was steadfast and protective. It was heartwarming to see them reconnect and find a way back to each other after so much pain and heartbreak. They might have spent five years apart, but they never lost their spark.
Another great found family by Klassen. I loved Hazel's relationships with her best friend Rory, Willard's family and all the staff at the bed and breakfast.
The bed and breakfast and farm and the small town vibes, made for a beautiful and cosy backdrop to the story.

The prologue absolutely shattered me. Before I even had a chance to settle into the story, I was already an emotional wreck. From that point on, I knew I was in for a ride, and this book never let go.
What stood out to me most was how real everything felt. The characters, the grief, the friendships, the loveit all felt authentic. Nothing was overly dramatic or forced. Instead, it was raw, heartfelt, and beautifully human. I could genuinely picture every scene playing out like a movie. Someone seriously needs to put this on the big screen.
The writing was incredible. The pacing was perfect, giving every emotional moment the space it deserved without ever feeling slow. The descriptions were immersive without being overwhelming, and I was completely invested from beginning to end.
I absolutely loved the dual POVs, the effortless banter, and the slow-building tension between the characters. Watching old friendships rekindle and seeing what it truly means to come home to people who love you unconditionally made this story so much more than just a romance.
And can we talk about Rory? What an incredible friend. Every character brought something special to the story, making the entire cast feel like people I’d known for years.
The epilogue was the perfect ending to an unforgettable journey, and by the time I finished, I just sat there smiling through my tears.

His determination, strength, and unconditional love for Hazel throughout the book was admirable; despite going through several layers of grief himself.

Hazel is emotionless.
Or is she?
She's a nuanced character who is dealing with so much loss and trauma she doesn't know how to handle it any other way that doesn't involve running.
She just needs to remember where her home is to find her way back.
"Growing up, he knew how to put me back together when I was sad. I didn't know he also knew how to tear me apart"
The other characters were an absolute hoot, and even they had my heart doing little flutters.
I can't wait to see more of the Lewis brothers, and the array of characters in Kindred Meadows.

I was so excited to receive another ARC through NetGalley from a brilliant Canadian author!
Right from the beginning, I was rooting for Will and Hazel. The chemistry between these two was undeniable, and the flirty tension simmering throughout the story had me completely invested. This is a sweet, heartfelt romance featuring the ultimate cinnamon roll hero, and I loved every minute of it.
One thing readers should know is that the spice level is quite mild. This is definitely not a smut-heavy romance, which was actually a refreshing change of pace from my usual reads.
A fun personal note: I have aphantasia, so I struggle to visualize characters while reading. I secretly love when authors compare their characters to specific actors or public figures because it gives me something concrete to picture. Knowing that Will looked like Miles Teller genuinely helped bring the character to life for me!
My only minor criticism (and I hesitate to even call it a criticism) was the age difference between the characters. As adults, the three year gap felt completely insignificant, but some of the flashback scenes felt a little unusual given that Will had been in love with Hazel for so long while being a few years older.
Overall, this was an adorable, feel good romance that left me smiling, and I absolutely cannot wait to read Rory and Bentley’s story next!

I was not familiar with Caitlin Klassen's previous works so I had no expectations going in to this story. It appears I am an outlier so far with my review. But not every book is for every person.
First off, you know you. Please make sure to check out trigger warnings before reading this book. It does start out with a very tragic scene that could be triggering.
This is a story of young love and best friends when a tragedy strikes. Hazel and Will have been close since they were young. Everyone, including them, thought that they would be together when tragedy strikes but Hazel flees their small town and doesn't look back. For five years she wanders from town to town trying to escape the pain.
Here are my issues with the book.
1) Hazel did not return home until after her grandma died and the will had been read. Ok. Is she that selfish that the woman who raised her from her late elementary years until she left home was not important enough to return home? She says that her grandma meant everything?

I had the privilege of being a beta reader for this story and I don’t know how Caitlin does it but she gets you in the feels everytime. This story was incredible with amazing character development.
Hazel ran the Bumble Bee Bed and Breakfast in with intents to take it over one day but when she lost her brother Denny to a bull trampling accident she ran away right after the funeral leaving everything behind including her grandma Fran and her best friend will. This was such a beautiful, emotional second-chance romance. 🥹 Hazel and Will have a complicated history filled with love, loss, and so much unfinished business. After spending years away from her hometown, Hazel is forced to return and face the past she’s been trying so hard to leave behind - including Will, the one person she’s never stopped loving.
I really loved the emotional depth of this story. There’s so much grief, healing, forgiveness, and learning to let yourself move forward, and I thought Hazel and Will’s journey was incredibly heartfelt. 🤍
But it wasn’t all tears! 😂 Will’s pickle juice and peanut butter thoughts had me absolutely laughing (iykyk). 🥒 🥜 And I loved all the small-town moments throughout the book, especially the rodeo - it just gave the story such a fun, cozy, community feel. 🤠💛
There was also a certain family reunion moment that had me so emotional. 🥹 Without giving anything away, it was one of those scenes that just hits you right in the heart.
Overall, this was a sweet, emotional read about finding your way home, facing the things that hurt you, and discovering whether some loves really are worth finding your way back to. 💛✨🌻

I don't think I've read something that felt this much like healing in a very long time.
There was no villain in this story. No one was right, no one was wrong — there were just people trying to live with the hand they'd been dealt, and the quiet, steady way they showed up for each other while doing it. This book solidified exactly why I love smart, character-driven romance. I have zero complaints. Not one.
One scene I will never forget is watching everyone were there for Will and Hazel when they finally decided to go back to the rodeo. And that's the thing about this book — it was never just Will and Hazel's story. Every character in it mattered. Rory didn't get much page time, but I loved her completely, and I know this is a book I'll hold close for a long time.
Will might be one of the most patient, understanding men I've ever read. Hazel lost something, and so did he — but when she chose to run because she needed that for herself, he didn't hold it against her. He simply took care of everything she left behind, without conditions, and let her come back on her own time. The way her grandmother knew that Hazel was going to come home someday.
I was crying while I read this. I'm crying while writing this review. I know I'll cry again just telling someone about it. I loved how they carried Denny with them throughout. I loved how Will's family became a second family to Hazel. I loved how Rory was the best friend Hazel needed, even in the moments Hazel couldn't be there for her, and how Rory understood that without resentment.
This story is healing, plain and simple. If you're looking for something that will genuinely move you, read this book. You're going to fall in love with every part of it.

Somewhere Only We Know by Caitlin Klassen has a very small town western/country vibe to it. It is romantic, funny, sad, and it has a few really spicy moments. There are some fun moments shared between best friends also. It is a feel good story with quite a few predictable moments and although the book is good, some parts felt like they were dragged out.

Hazel had a family of runners. Her father left when she was born and her drug addict mother eventually left when she was still a kid. Her brother ran from his emotions by bull riding. Now, shortly after her high school graduation, she's running away from her hometown, her family, her friends, and the man she's always loved even though she had promised her grandmother she would help run The Bumble Bee Bed and Breakfast when she got older.
A few year later, Hazel returns home after getting some bad news. She has to face the people she abandoned while trying to cope with her own emotions.

This was hands down a 5-star read for me. This was my first cowboy romance, and I absolutely loved it. This book is a cowboy, brothers' best friend, second-chance romance, and it was beautifully written.
This book is about a girl named Hazel who witnesses the loss of her brother, and the only way that she can think of to cope with what happened is to run and leave everything and everyone behind, including the only guy she has ever loved.... Willard Lewis. Hazel ends up returning to her hometown after five years, after finding out that her grandmother had passed, which in turn brings everything back, including her feelings, even though she tries to deny it.
I loved reading about Hazel's and Willard's story. This is a beautiful second-chance romance, and to read about the love that Willard still had for Hazel despite her leaving without a word for five years.
This book really showed the trauma that Hazel had experienced and showed her internal struggle with the loss of her brother and grandmother, along with her guilt of abandoning everyone and everything that she ever knew.
I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone and can't wait to read the rest of this series. If you read this book, you will not regret your decision.

Caitlin’s writing is full of heart and are easy, quick reads for me and this was no exception. I loved the idea of a cowboy romance as I am loving those right now, but this was so much more than that. It was a story of heartbreak, grief, and tragedy that a lot of people can relate to. Hazel and Will’s story is a heartbreaking journey of second chances and grief that has fundamentally changed them to their core. Can’t wait to read book 2 + 3 next year!

The prologue had me hooked from the very first page! I loved that we get to see both the past and the present, allowing us to fully understand what happened, the emotions involved, and how it shaped the characters.
The friendship between Rory and Hazel was one of my favourite parts of the book. I loved seeing them reconnect and find their way back to the friendship they had before. Their bond felt so genuine, and it was lovely to witness.
This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster - I felt so many emotions within just a few chapters. I absolutely loved the flirty banter between Will and Hazel. Watching Hazel slowly find her spark again after everything she has been through was so heartwarming, and their chemistry was such a joy to read.
I also really enjoyed how the story wrapped up, from returning to the rodeo to the beautiful wedding scene. It left me feeling so happy and excited for what’s to come. I can’t wait for book two! 💛🐝

The prologue had me hooked from the very first page! I loved that we get to see both the past and the present, allowing us to fully understand what happened, the emotions involved, and how it shaped the characters.
The friendship between Rory and Hazel was one of my favourite parts of the book. I loved seeing them reconnect and find their way back to the friendship they had before. Their bond felt so genuine, and it was lovely to witness.
This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster - I felt so many emotions within just a few chapters. I absolutely loved the flirty banter between Will and Hazel. Watching Hazel slowly find her spark again after everything she has been through was so heartwarming, and their chemistry was such a joy to read.
I also really enjoyed how the story wrapped up, from returning to the rodeo to the beautiful wedding scene. It left me feeling so happy and excited for what’s to come. I can’t wait for book two! 💛🐝

Oh boy, this book had me in tears at the start. Ugly tears but don't fret, the sadness passes and you find yourself falling for the sweetest, most loveable book boyfriend.
Hazel and Willard find love early, but a tragedy tears them apart and Hazel runs. However, five years later she returns to her hometown after another tragedy but this time she has sealed not only her heart but all of her emotions behind high walls. She vows to protect herself but being home is chipping away at those walls. Meanwhile, Willard has never stopped loving Hazel and he is determined to show her that they can have their love story again.
Caitlin has again given us characters with complex emotions who are not perfect. In fact, at times you just want to shake Hazel. Even knowing what she is going through doesn't ease the frustration. Willard captures your heart with his genuine and open emotions. He is calm (most of the time) and compassionate, giving Hazel what she needs, even when she doesn't know.
I look forward to reading more of this world and can highly recommend this book to everyone. 4.5 stars for this one.

I received this book as an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have been in the mood for a small town cowboy romance, and this book was everything I needed. It was a very cute and easy read, and checked all my boxes. It literally had me tearing up at only 4%.
In hindsight, I do wish that the character death (not a spoiler, it’s in the TW) had a little more depth. The scene was very cut and dry, 1-2-3, and I feel like it could have been even more impactful if it had been drawn out even just a little bit more.
The romance was very sweet, if a little telling > showing, but it still had me giggling and kicking my feet and that’s all that matters🤪
The age gap was a little concerning for me. Yes, it’s only three years, but when Miss Ma’am is fifteen and he’s thinking about “getting his hands on her”, it gets a little weird… Beyond that, I really loved Will and Hazel and everything that he did for her behind the scenes. Also the tattoo🥺 Lowkey might be one of my favourite secret tattoos ever.
Overall a very fun small town romance. 10/10 would read again.

I think this might be my favorite Caitlin Klassen book! I felt Hazels pain. I absolutely adored Will, another amazing green flag MMC. Caitlin sure knows how to write those green flag men! I loved their relationship, their connection and their banter. The found family in this book 🥹. I did not want to put this book down at all. One of my favorite micro tropes was also in there.🥰.
I was rooting for them the whole time, crying and giggling throughout this whole book.

This was such a heartwarming and emotional read! Caitlin Klassen created characters that felt genuine, and I was invested in their journey from the very beginning. Hazel and Will completely stole my heart. Their chemistry felt natural, and I loved watching their relationship develop. They were both so easy to root for, and I found myself smiling through so many of their interactions.
The story does a wonderful job exploring themes of healing, hope, and taking chances, all while keeping the romance at the center. It struck a great balance between emotional moments and lighter, feel-good scenes.
The only reason this wasn't quite a five-star read for me was that the pacing slowed a little in a few places, and I would have loved a bit more development for some of the supporting characters. Even so, those were small issues in an otherwise wonderful story.
Overall, Somewhere Only We Know was a cozy, heartfelt romance that left me with a smile. If you love character-driven romances with lovable leads, plenty of heart, and a relationship you'll be cheering for, I definitely recommend picking this one up.

Hazel at 18,Willard said he loved her, and right after that her brother died. She couldn't handle it and she ran away and stayed away for five years. She was running again and ended up back to her grandmothers house. She didn't know her grandmother had passed away, and she was falling apart. Her best friend who she also ran away from and hadn't called or anything, is the one who told her. She also discovered that the boy she loved was still there and still single. She wasn't expecting any of this, but then she had to find out about the will her grandmother left, and that was a total shock.
The story unfolds as they all try to move forward, but there is a lot of hurt to get through. There is progress and setbacks, and it became pulling off a band-aid one at a time, until they decided to pull them all off at once and see what happened. You will read about all that happens, how things turn out, and the journey from taking one band-aid off at a time to taking them all off, is what it takes to start to heal.
