About the Book In this book the author competently takes on the task of presenting a coherent picture of the vast panorama that is India. With a prodigiously broad literature, which includes the Sanskritic past, as well as the other languages that flourished in the country, he has also drawn upon the corpus left by foreign explorers, missionaries, and the scholar-administrators of the Raj. About the Author(s) Dr B. N. Pandey, born in Uttar Pradesh, taught Modern Indian History at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He had also served as Chairman of the Centre of South African Studies.
Love this little book - one of my all time favourites for dipping into the sounds and songs of India, its history, culture and mystery. If anyone wishes to get the flavour or India you couldn't do better than delve into its pages. Great to have by the bedside. Although it was written in the 1960s it has a lasting freshness each time you open it.
If you want a clear, concise synopsis of the culture that is India - this is your book. Very well written, it uses excerpts from the best works of poetry, religion, letters, and histories to paint a realistic portrait of the subcontinent. Highly recommended, but beware: this was published in 1965 so it is not up-to-date. Still, a great read.
