Lots of similarities with The Story of Minglan, except for the fact that Shi Yinniang's relationship with her stepkids was simply too sweet. I almost cried at her confrontation scene with Xu Sijie. I loved him the best of all her kids, even more than Xu Sijin. Nothing wrong with the latter, but when Jie ge was young, and even as he grew up, his unconditional love, respect and trust for Shi Yinniang was simply heartbreaking... He was simply too sweet and adorable. The scene where, Shi Yinniang confronts him after he finds out his identity is one of the best in the novel: "You are my son. No matter what others say, no matter what you find out... You were raised by me, you are my son, and will always be the fifth young master of Si fang(fourth household). No one can take you away from me!" Xu Siyu, Sicheng and Zhen'er were okay I suppose, but none of them could compare to Jie ge... As for Xu Lingyu, he wasn't bad per se, but I wasn't particularly impressed either. He was an alright guy, and a good husband to Shi Yinniang, but Gu Tingye was much better than him in my opinion. In fact, the earlier deaths in his household orchestrated by Qin Shi happened mostly because of his lackluster attitude, and he reminded me of Minglan's father Sheng Wan. But overall, it was a good read, if a bit lengthy.

I thought this would be a military political story based on the synopsis but it seems more of a domestic / slice of life story. I hit chapter 200 and still can't get into it so I guess it's not my cup of tea.
