+ وُلد عام 1919.
+ تخرج من كلية الصيدلة عام 1943.
+ اشتغل في المهنة حتى سنة 1948.
+ كان يمتلك صيدلية في دمنهور.
+ وباع كل ما يملك ووزعه على الفقراء ولم يحتفظ إلا بثمن التذكرة ذهاب.
+ ترهبن في دير أنبا صموئيل في الصعيد يوم 10 أغسطس 1948 [اختار هذا الدير لأنه كان أفقر دير وأبعد دير عن العمران وأكثرهم عزلة].
+ كان يطوي الليالي في قراءة الكتاب المقدس بتعمق شديد وفي الصلاة والتسبيح حتى الصباح. وهناك بدأ يخط أولى صفحات أهم وأول كتبه وهو كتاب: ”حياة الصلاة الأرثوذكسية“ (الذي صدر عام 1952، ونُقِّح وزيد عام 1968، وترجم ونُشر بالفرنسية عام 1977، وبالإيطالية عام 1998، ثم بالإنجليزية ونُشر بواسطة دار نشر ٍSVS التابعة لمعهد سانت فلاديمير اللاهوتي بنيويورك عام 2002).
+ سرعان ما هزلت صحته بسبب فقر الدير الشديد، ولكنه أجبر على الانتقال إلى دير السريان ـ وادي النطرون (سنة 1951). وهناك تقبَّل نعمة الكهنوت رغماً عنه.
+ عاش متوحداً في مغارة وسط الصخور بعيداً عن الدير، وبعد سنتين، كلف أن يصير أباً روحياً لرهبان الدير وعلى الأخص للشباب المتقدم للرهبنة حديثاً. وهكذا صار رائداً للنهضة الرهبانية في الكنيسة القبطية في هذا الجيل.
+ أرجع الرهبنة إلى حياتها الأولى وأحيا من جديد روح الآباء النساك الأوائل بحياته الروحية والنسكية على أعلى مستوى، بالإضافة إلى روح أبوة وتلمذة وتدبير لأول مرة في برية الأسقيط منذ عصر الآباء الأوائل، مما جمع الشباب المسيحي حوله. ومن هنا بدأت أول جماعة رهبانية في العصر الحديث متتلمذة على أب روحي واحد كما كانت الرهبنة في بدء تكوينها.
+ ظل يدبر هذه الجماعة الرهبانية الأولى وهو في مغارته بعيداً عن الدير. لمدة سنتين (1952-1954). وهناك أكمل أول كتاب له: ”حياة الصلاة الأرثوذكسية“. (الذي تم الانتهاء من الطباعة في يوم الأربعاء 7 أكتوبر 1953، ونُقِّح وزيد عام 1968، وتُرجم للإنجليزية ونُشر بواسطة دار نشر SVS التابعة لمعهد سانت فلاديمير اللاهوتي بنيويورك عام 2002، كما نُشربالفرنسية عام 1997 وبالإيطالية عام 1999م).
+ في 1954 اختاره بابا الإسكندرية الأنبا يوساب الثاني (1946-1956) وكيلاً له في مدينة الإسكندرية (بعد أن رفع درجته الكهنوتية إلى إيغومانس "قمص") حيث مكث حوالي سنة وشهرين (مارس 54-مايو 55) هناك، ترك في شعبها أثراً روحياً عميقاً ما زال ظاهراً حتى اليوم في إكليروس وشعب الكنائس القبطية في الإسكندرية (حوالي 40 كنيسة).
+ إلا أنه في أوائل عام 1955 آثر العودة إلى مغارته بالدير ليكمل حياته الرهبانية في الوحدة والسكون، أُقيل (تلغراف من أنبا يوساب) وعاد إلى دير السريان. وآنذاك ازداد الإقبال على التتلمذ له في طريق الرهبنة.
+ في الجمعة 20 يوليو 1956 ترك دير السريان إلى ديره القديم (الأنبا صموئيل) طلباً لمزيد من الخلوة والهدوء. فتبعه تلاميذه الجدد إلى هناك.
+ ظل هناك 3 سنين رُشح خلالها للمرة الأولى ليكون بطريركاً.
+ في عام 1960 (29 يناير 1960 - فجر سبت لعازر 9 أبريل 1960) عاد هو وتلاميذه إلى دير السريان استجابة لطلب البابا القبطي الجديد البابا كيرلس السادس (1959-1971)، لكنهم آثروا أن يرجعوا إلى حياة الوحدة والهدوء والكامل للحفاظ على روح الرهبنة الأولى.
+ فذهبوا إلى صحراء وادي الريان 11 أغسطس 1960 (تبعد 50 كيلو عن أقرب قرية مأهولة بالسكان في محافظة الفيوم - في عمق الصحراء). وعاشوا هناك في كهوف محفورة في الجبال، حفروها بأيديهم، بحياة مشابهة تماماً وفي كل شيء لحياة آباء الرهبنة الأوائل أنطونيوس ومقاريوس. واستمروا هكذا 9 سنين.
+ ازدادت جماعتهم الرهبانية بالرغم من انقطاع كل صلة بينهم وبين العالم.
+ في هذه الفترة، ألَّف كتباً روحية كثيرة ما زال يقرأها حتى الآن الشباب المسيحي في مصر والشرق الأوسط ويتأثرون بها.

+ في سنة 1969 دعاه البابا كيرلس السادس مع جماعته الرهبانية (12 راهباً) للانتقال إلى دير أنبا مقار (منتصف المسافة من القاهرة والإسكندرية) بوادي النطرون (من القرن الرابع) الذي كانت الحياة الرهبانية فيه توشك أن تنطفئ وعهد إليه بمهمة تعمير الدير وإحياء الحياة الرهبانية في الدير من جديد. لم يكن فيه أكثر من خمسة رهبان (مسنين ومرضى) ومباني الدير توشك أن تتساقط.
+ من هذا التاريخ بدأت النهضة العمرانية والنهضة الرهبانية الجديدة الملازمة لها.
+ أصبح الآن (2006) في الدير حوالي 130 راهباً.

Fr. Matta el Meskeen (1919-2006), also known as Matthew the Poor, is a Coptic monk who relived the experience of the desert fathers by renouncing a well established career and a wealthy lifestyle to devote his life to monasticism. He was a prolific writer of sermons, and apparently did not reread what he wrote. If that is true, then he is either very brilliant or very inspired--or both!

This collection of sermons covers some basic topics (How to read the Bible, Christ in the Old and New Testaments, the Holy Spirit). But there is also some effort to arrange them according to the church year: there is a progression which goes from the Nativity to the Assumption of the Virgin ("Assumption" is the word actually used here, but Orthodox usually speak of it as the Dormition, or "falling asleep").

Be that as it may, the author speaks with great precision and great warmth, referring very often to the text of the Bible and explaining his theology very clearly and logically. One thing that particularly warmed me toward him was his concern for ecumenism and unity in the universal Church.

Despite some glitches here and there (probably printer's errors), the translation is excellent.

Took me 18 months of slow reading. This is one of the deepest books I’ve read on the spiritual life, yet immensely practical. Fr. Matthew the Poor essentially walks us through elements central to the spiritual life—but you could almost look at it as a companion to the Christian calendar, helping us enter into the present, salvific reality of the life of Jesus.

The cherry on top are the final two chapters on Christian Unity, which are worth their weight in gold.

This book was, in essence, a collection of sermons and writings on various topics in the Christian life - asceticism, fasting, repentance, prayer, and then various writings on the Theotokos, certain Great Feasts of the Church, and Christian unity. It's quite a lovely and simple read that I found best digested in small portions every day.

Absolutely beautiful!

From what I can gather, Matthew the Poor (until his death recently) was a pre-eminent Coptic monk from Egypt, and indeed was someone directly credited with the revival of interest and involvement in Egyptian monasticism within the past 30-40 years. The distance between where I stand (as an American with Methodist adherancy and an Anabaptist history) and the entire world of Coptic Orthodoxy (and indeed, Orthodoxy outside of Roman Catholicism on the whole) is made readily available to me even while reading the Wikipedia article regarding Abba Matta (as he was/is referred to by his fellow monks at the Monastery of St. Macarius in Egypt). I'm fascinated by his life and teachings, as they seem deeply reminiscent of those of the ancient Desert Fathers (who themselves lived within the wadis and wastelands of Egypt), and am interested to read this book as I am able. Matthew's thoughts regarding the reading and interpetation of Scripture seem particularly interesting, again being rooted within an entirely different context of self, God, and the other than that which I find within my Western mind and experience.

This is a series of writings by Matta El Maskeen/Matthew the Poor, a Coptic monk who lives in the desert of Egypt. The essays ((for lack of a better word)) are all about making and keeping God at the center of your life through prayer, scripture reading, repentence and humility before the Lord. It's not an easy read, and I am putting it down for a little while to let what I've already read soak in.

Not only does this collection of essays provide a distinctively Coptic voice in contemporary theology, it also serves as a simple, direct primer on basic theological ideas like the Trinity, deification, and Scriptural authority. The final two essays, on Christian unity, are particularly timely and effective.

A good book to read in small doses each morning. How do we make God the center of all our thoughts, words, and deeds? To dwell with God is all about God and less about my needs, desires, and hopes. Henri Nouwen said, "Father Matta's radical God-centeredness comes as a shock which wakes us up from a long dream."
