The 3rd book in the series blew the first two books out of the damn water!!!!!
If you have read the previous books then you already know that Xavier taking the throne and becoming King of the Seas was already a battle and then Zev found his bride. Aaron had always knew who his bride was but because of the dangers facing the very ruler ship of the ocean he had to refrain from claiming her. The Sea Witch aka Sienna is the mate to Aaron and how these two were able to keep it a secret is, she gave him a necklace that kept him from aging and she cloaked herself into remaining to those on the outside that she hasn't aged too. Once you find your mate, you begin the aging process.
Their secret is due to a battle that the Sea Witch had foreseen involving her sister Tabatha, who was hell bent on commanding the Seas for herself, rounding up a rebellion against the current Kind Xavier and managing to open up one door of hell. Unleashing monsters and demons they never knew existed but in Tabatha's quest for power she found a way to do it.
Now that the the Sea Witch (Sienna) has told Aaron what is to come, she and the Kingship are preparing to go to battle. To try and rescue her niece Shawnta who will succeed her as the next Sea Witch, close the door to hell, trying to survive so that she can finally be with Aaron and defeating her evil sister in the process. This story is action pack, you will not be able to put it down and when it is all said and done, you will definitely be looking for the next book in the series.
I have to say this story had me on the edge of my seat and scared from the description of the demons from hell. Author Laverne Thompson's description of those creatures were frightening, even the murkiness of the waters, the ocean floor that turned to ash and coal that was by the opened door, the death of the flora and sea life surrounding the door, the heat and everything else that your minds eye was able to see. I mean accuracy was on point and I applaud this author.
This was my first time reading LaVerne Thompson's work and it definitely won't be my last.
As a huge fan of books that re-envision mythology and folklore, I loved her new perspective on Mer people and selkies. Sea Witch: Children Of The Waves series picks up with Aaron, a Child of the Sea, finding the woman who is intended to be his mate. He's searched for her for a hundred year--but in finding her, he also finds himself forced to make a difficult choice: claim her and risk the destruction of his people or let he go and risk the destruction of his soul. Both are forced to make a sacrifice and Sienna's journey to Hades will remind you very much of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice (one of my favorite myths).
An intense and emotionally-driven story, Sea Witch: Children of the Waves is rich in detail and weaves the perfect alternative to traditional merfolk depicted in folklore and mythology. I haven't read the first books in the series, but that didn't stop me from being pulled into this story and enjoying every minute of it.
Two thumbs up, LaVerne for great storytelling and characterization! Loved it! :)
