A tremendous debut combining the political intrigue of high fantasy, touching personal drama, and a thrilling mystery plot. And also, there's a dragon. But it might not be what you think.

Exiled Magic is the first in a trilogy about the kingdom of Kritha, its surrounding woods and neighboring kingdoms, and their magic - both the known, official magical powers and the secret, carefully-hidden, or exiled powers.

The story shifts between three points of view: Drina, the silver-haired young princess who doesn't want to be a princess, who discovers hidden truths about her life and exiles herself from the kingdom. This is a character I grew to like slowly and ended up loving fiercely. There's also a subtle but beautiful lesbian love story here!

Tritan, the commoner boy who begins his journey in magic school (or, the royal education of the Magic Blessed), who develops his power to converse with animals (including magical creatures!) but ends up learning so, so much more than he bargained for. The mystery and adventure that Tritan gets up to might be my favorite part of the book? It gets INTENSE and it's so good, while maintaining a YA vibe.

Finally - Levrinne, Drina's fiery red-headed sister with a huge heart but also political aspirations, is probably the most surprising and complex character in this novel. I won't spoil it but will just say I was shocked. I also loved seeing her figure out the delicate art of diplomacy and political work - it's so well done. So I kinda love AND hate her, idk.

There are also so, so many more colorful and interesting minor characters all making this book what it is. This fantasy world is made out of people and told through so much great, quick-paced, FUNNY dialogue. It was a joy to read.

I got to read an early copy of this book sent to me by the publisher and I am so grateful!
