Asphyxiante culture

Rate this book

This collection of writings by the artist Jean Dubuffet might as well read as a manifesto for all that I hold dear. Dubuffet was interested in children's art as a point of access to all the wonderment that can come with even the most mundane moments in life. His thinking and art was radical in its poetic call to arms against a culture that would stamp out any fascination with and ownership of day to day life. Read this on days that try to crush you; read it with a cup of tea or cocoa and cradle its cultural coup de gras in the darkest parts of your heart.

Clearly our author has an agenda. He practiced what he preached to a point, he did try to break away from the art cannon of his time. Also to bring the attention of the public to different interpretations and approaches of art is laudable and valuable. However, the writing is repetitive and not very well structured. It would have benefited from some editing or more pondering from the author on what is really needed or not. Furthermore, much of his argument is spurious and wishful thinking, always back to the good savage argument of Rousseau. The past is not the solution to the present and the mould for the future. Not it does not hold important lessons, as it clearly does.
Overall an enjoyable read.

Lost somewhere between brilliant polemic and frothing rant, the title piece is, in essence, a remarkably direct and clear call for radical subjectivity expressed through artistic production (particularly non-verbal art). Very, VERY good, though this edition lacks all apparatus, no contextual notes (not really necessary), no historical information (I, for one, wouldn't mind knowing when the essay was published originally), just a short appreciation that concentrates more on Dubuffet's painting than the contents of the book.

Interesting. An individualist-nihilist anarchist screed against the sphere of official culture - really against official culture’s role in abstract social domination, although Dubuffet’s conception of the problem is so mystified as to fall pretty seriously wide of its target, and advocate merely cultural solutions to a problem caused by class society itself.

While the scattered bits here affirming minor art are something I can fully get behind, Dubuffet spends much too much time haranguing about cultural institutions and establishment art. It's a serious imbalance that wore me down.
That's okay. Don't need to be a great writer to be a great painter, and he's still one of my favorites in the latter category.

Dubuffet kinda slayed here but he's still annoying and self-centered.
