Lex writes romance about mental health, healing, sad girls, and the book boyfriends who love them through it all. Her stories are filled with emotionally scarred characters, morally gray love interests, found family, slow-burn tension, and the messy process of learning how to feel whole again.
When she’s not writing, she’s usually escaping into a book, listening to music, or dreaming up her next story—and probably another fictional man to become emotionally attached to.
Lessons in Madness was an excellent continuation of Lia and Kylo’s story. I loved getting to watch their relationship grow even stronger as they spent more time together and got to know one another on an even deeper level. Their connection continues to develop in such a natural and meaningful way, and I loved getting to experience that alongside them.
I find Lia to be an extremely likable FMC—someone I would genuinely want to be friends with. It has been so inspiring to see how much she has grown, both physically and mentally, over the course of this series. She has definitely come such a long way!
And of course, Kylo is an incredibly lovable MMC. The way he looks after Lia and takes care of her is something that definitely doesn’t go unnoticed. There’s just something about the way he shows up for her that makes him so easy to love.
I especially enjoyed how book two gave us more of the characters’ backstories and allowed us to better understand what shaped Kylo into the person he is. I also loved getting the opportunity to see and learn more about Carter, Zayne, Leo, and Blair. Getting those additional glimpses into the characters made the story feel even more layered and gave me an even greater appreciation for the characters as a whole.
I’m already looking forward to reading more from this amazing author in the future!
If you’re a fan of action-packed fight scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat, a lovable found family, and an epic love story that will have you feeling ALL the feelings, I definitely recommend picking this one up!

Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lessons in Madness is an absolute emotional roller coaster! Lex Lovely definitely does NOT disappoint with this second installment in the Steel & Shadows Duology. She brings us right back into the world with Lia, Kylo, and the entire crew, and somehow manages to make everything feel even bigger, more intense, and more emotional than the first book.
This book had action, suspense, twists, tension, spice, and ALL the feelings. From the very beginning, I was completely pulled back into the story and constantly wondering what was going to happen next. There were moments that had me holding my breath, moments that made me angry, moments that made me laugh, and more than a few that had me reaching for the tissues.
I absolutely loved watching Lia and Kylo's relationship continue to grow. Their bond feels deeper in this book, with more trust, vulnerability, and understanding between them. Kylo continues to be fiercely protective while also being patient and supportive of Lia as she works through everything she's been through. I especially appreciate that Lia's trauma isn't magically erased. Her healing is messy, complicated, and ongoing, which makes her character feel incredibly real.
But honestly, the found family stole my heart. 🥹 Every character feels important and brings something to the story. Getting more of Carter, Zayne, Draven, Blair, and the rest of the crew made me even more attached to them. Their relationships, banter, loyalty, and willingness to fight for each other are some of my favorite parts of this series.
And those twists?! I DID NOT SEE SOME OF THEM COMING. 👀 There were reveals that made me rethink things I'd already read and had me sitting there like, WAIT… WHAT?!
Lex also does an amazing job continuing to build the world while giving us more of the characters' backstories and showing how everything connects. The suspense keeps you turning pages, while the emotional moments give the story so much depth.
And let's not forget the spice. It fits naturally into the story and the relationships rather than feeling thrown in just for the sake of it.
Lessons in Madness gave me everything I wanted from a sequel and then some. Lex brought everyone back for an action-packed, emotional, suspense-filled ride that had me completely invested from beginning to end.
I laughed. I cried. I stressed. I swooned. I questioned EVERYTHING.
And now that I've reached the end, I'm sitting here wishing I could stay in this world with these characters just a little longer.
Lex, you absolutely wrecked me with this one. And I loved every second of it!
Such an amazing story. Just like the first book in the series, I was hooked from the very first page.
The emotions, the pain, the sweet, happy, and dark moments... The author writes everything so beautifully that you feel like you’re going through it all alongside the characters.
Lessons in Madness is full of action, but there’s also plenty of room for the characters themselves, their development, and their pasts. And not just the main characters, but the side characters too.
They’re not perfect. Kylo, Lia, and the other characters all have their flaws. But I love them for that, because in this story, those flaws make them feel so much more real.
And I absolutely cannot wait to see where this series goes next.
This book was just as good as the first one Will be a little sad the main couple aren't in the next one but looking forward leo love story with a certain someone
When i tell you I was shocked about carter's hideout and what it revield i was not expecting it happy but shocked
The topic on protection was nice touch the fact they slipped up and got plan b the talk after about kids whether its now or in future between kylo and lia was a nice topic very different from other books
Zayne grew on me didn't know much on them then didn't like the way he talked to lia in the forest but he earned my appreciation and become a likeable character by the end
Blair truns a whole 180 she did it for love but also didn't betray her family and in the end made the best choices
Julian well not sorry deserved it could of prolonged it though but a good power girl moment 😉
Lia and kylo both mastered their power in this story but still showed the hard ship and all the training it took from a cranky old man who could still put you in your place
Will say thank you for the opening sceen with the chase seen and the amount of good girl and thats my girl moment in this book
Thank you for the opportunity to arc this book

I liked the book, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first one.
There were a few things that just didn’t really make sense to me. I can’t go into too much detail without spoilers, but one example is that at one point Leo finds something, but he doesn’t reveal it until days/weeks later. Even though an “explanation” is given for why he tells Kylo when he does, it doesn’t make sense that he didn’t tell anyone sooner. A certain character’s redemption arc felt very sudden, and it made the character seem more childlike to me compared to the first book. The timeline towards the end of the book is a little confusing too.
The spice is sometimes described so vaguely, it came across as if the author wasn’t comfortable writing it to me. At one point I thought Lia and Kylo were kissing but turns out she was doing… something else 😏
Despite all of the above, I love that we got to know the characters a bit better, especially Carter, Blair and Draven. There was one scene near the end of the book that had me at the edge of my seat and the book had a very satisfying ending.
3,5 stars, rounded up.
(I received this book as an ARC and I am leaving this review voluntarily.)
“You’ve got a mouth on you today. Seems I’ll have to put it to use later.”
I’ve been sitting on this review (sorry Lex!) for a while because I wasn’t sure how to put my thoughts into words and I wanted to do the two books justice, but I won't, so I’m going to keep it simple and you guys will just have to pick up the duet and see for yourselves how amazing it is!
Lex did it again! I was hooked right from the beginning. Lessons in Madness doesn't stop the momentum after Lessons in Ruin. It picks up perfectly where we leave off in LIR. It’s funny, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, and action-filled. There's a plot and spicy stuff. 🫦
I love Lex and I will read anything she puts in front of me.
She writes the scenes and the characters so well. The banter is amazing and even when they are at war, they make jokes.
(They get ambushed) Leo snaps, staring at his empty hands. “What are Carter and I supposed to do? Throw pinecones?” “Use your hands, Lockhart. Let’s kick some ass,” Carter says.
The Characters (I love every one of them!)
Leo - Always precise with a blade Carter - LOVES junk food. Zayne - Don’t catch him on a bad day Kylo - Mom taught him to dance! - “I mean dance. Tango, waltz, swing… the whole bit.” Lia - Can drive stick shift like a badass
“I’ll tear through this entire war just to get you alone somewhere with no one around for miles. I’m going to ruin you, Lia. You’ll cry out my name until your voice breaks.”
I’m so proud of you, Lex! Can’t wait for the next one!
A couple notes: -Check the trigger warnings. -You have to read Lessons in Ruin first. Trust me, you won't regret it. -Dont forget the playlist!
Oh my gosh, this one put me through an emotional blender!! I thought Lessons in Ruin was amazing, but this topped even that.
There is so much going on. It picks up shortly after the ending of Lessons in Ruin. This one is just as action-packed and I found myself holding my breath several times. Now that Kylo and Lia are officially together, you get more of their cute (and spicy) scenes, and it’s so easy to fall for Kylo. He is the ultimate book boyfriend, and there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for Lia. One of the things I loved about Lia in the first one was her genuineness, and I like that it still remains and that she’s not automatically healed from her trauma. She went through, and is still going through, something traumatic, and it’s not being brushed under the rug. That’s one of the reasons this is one of my favorite series.
I also like that I got to learn more about Carter, Zayne, Draven, and Blair in this one. It helps you understand their behavior and motivations a bit more. This also has some of the best found family, and I found myself tearing up at how beautiful their friendship is. I think this wrapped up Lia and Kylo’s story in the best way, and surprise, I cried. But I’m so so excited for whatever comes next. I think it was set up wonderfully.
As with the first one, this explores some dark and triggering themes, so please check the TWs before you read it.
Just when you think the worst is finally behind you, the past comes back looking for another fight! Lessons in Madness by Lex Lovely brings us a story where peace doesn't last long and the people you love can become your biggest weakness.
What caught my attention was the main character's determination to protect the people closest to her. She's already been through so much, but instead of letting her past define her, she's becoming someone who refuses to back down. I love seeing a character reach that point where she's no longer just trying to survive. She's ready to stand up for herself and everyone who matters to her!
The returning enemies, old wounds, and constant threat of danger create plenty of tension. I also liked the emotional side of the storyline because the stakes aren't just about whether she makes it out alive. Every decision could put someone she loves in danger, and that makes her choices even more difficult.
If you enjoy darker stories with strong female characters, dangerous enemies, complicated pasts, and characters willing to risk everything for the people they love, this is definitely one to check out! Sometimes the most dangerous person isn't the one starting the war, but the one who's finally had enough!
This book wasn't bad. The first book was much better imo. This book felt much heavier and emotional. It deals with some deep trauma for several of the characters. Check the trigger warnings.
The spice was vague and not very spicy. When it comes out that way I'd rather they just not have it at all.
Blaire's redemption arc came out of nowhere and then she dies. I think I'd have enjoyed it more if she lived. And got her own HEA. The war ends. They win. Then the group goes different places. Lia (FMC) goes to college. Kylo (MMC) opens a mechanic shop. Carter gets to be back with his family since they were "fired". Leo runs the facility with Zayne (and they're together now). Next book focuses on them and a surprise FMC. Lia and Leo get envelopes from their mom with pictures so they have something of their history.

Besties, I am unwell. I am not ready for this series to be over yet 😭 Lex Lovely has created something really special with this book, these characters, and this series - she has literally kidnapped me as a lifetime reader because of it! (You’re stuck with me now woman!) 🖤
This was the perfect finale to an already amazing series and I couldn’t have asked for more - she did Lia and Kylo’s story right and gave them (and us) what they deserved.
This book seamlessly picks up where Lessons in Ruin left off and sometimes has us wondering if there’s going to be an HEA for Lia, Kylo, and the gang. It’s an action packed rollercoaster ride filled with secrets, plot twists (🤯) and of course, enough spice to warrant a cold shower 🚿
Lex has done an amazing job of building on book one and has created such a layered dystopian world with characters who have depth and a plot that is paced just right - but I dare you to try not to devour this book in one sitting. It’s that good.
The mental health rep is strong and well done which makes Lia so relatable. Kylo is just Kylo and well…you’ll see. Broody, grumpy, and down bad for his girl - it also doesn’t hurt that he’s got abs for days 🥵
I seriously love this series so much and will 1000% do a reread (probably multiple times) and will recommend it with my whole chest. It just does something to you that draws you in, makes you feel so much, and then kisses you on the forehead and sends you home 💋
🖤 Remember, sometimes the person who gets under your skin the most is the one who understands you best 🖤
Thank you to the Author for providing me with this ARC
I really enjoyed Lessons in Ruin, but Lessons in Madness took everything from the first book and basically said, “Okay, but what if we made it MORE chaotic?” 😂
More action. More drama. More tension. More heartbreak. More spice. More characters. More twists. Just MORE.
Lia and Kylo absolutely had me swooning in this one. I already loved their dynamic, but their relationship felt so much deeper here. After everything they’ve been through, watching their connection continue to grow while absolute chaos is happening around them made me even more invested.
And then we get Isaiah…
SIR. 👏🏼
This man came into the story dropping little pieces of wisdom left and right, and I swear I was highlighting half of what came out of his mouth. 😂 I absolutely loved his character and thought he was such a great addition to an already amazing group.
The character dynamics in general were one of my favorite parts. There are new faces, deeper relationships, old wounds, emotional gut punches, and enough unexpected turns that I genuinely never felt completely comfortable thinking I knew where everything was headed.
Also, PLEASE check the trigger warnings before reading this series. There is some seriously heavy trauma woven throughout these books, and this installment definitely does not shy away from darker subject matter.
The only thing keeping this from a full five stars for me is something I wanted more of in the first book too: the bigger picture of the world. I am SO curious about how people with powers exist alongside regular society. Do ordinary people know they exist? Where did the powers originally come from? How do the Hunters and everyone involved in this conflict operate within a world that still has normal everyday life happening around them? I would absolutely eat up more history and worldbuilding around all of that.
But when it comes to the actual characters and the war happening within their world? I was completely immersed.
And THAT ENDING?!
Yeah. I need more.
This was such an amazing continuation of Lessons in Ruin. It was more intense, more emotional, spicier, crazier, and somehow made me even more attached to these characters.
4.5 stars. Bravo. Chef’s kiss. Now give me the next story because I am INVESTED. 🤌🏼🔥
4.25/5.0 Lessons in Ruin had me hooked from page ONE! Punched me right in face so good I needed more! I ATE book 2 UP!! Kyko & Lia are just a couple badasses paired with some kickass backup!! They run the entire gamut of emotions throughout BOTH books! I love the mental health healing representation in both book. If you havent read Book 1 Lessons in Ruin yet, WHAT are you waiting for!?!?
If you thought Lessons in Ruin put you through an emotional wringer, brace yourselves. Lessons in Madness completely wrecked me, i had to sit and stare at a wall all day and I loved every single second of it.
Lex writes stories that suck you in from chapter one, and this finale delivers on every promise. We’re right back in the thick of the war, but what truly shines here is the heart of the story: the characters.
Kylo just keeps getting better, and watching Lia and Kylo learn to surrender control to each other was stunning.
The Heat: 🔥🔥🔥 (The spice level is off the charts 🥵).
The Depth: It’s not just Kylo and Lia’s story the side characters and even the antagonist dynamics pull at your heartstrings.
Seeing Kylo and Lia grow closer, balance control, and share both high stakes heat and quiet tenderness was beautiful. Plus, getting more background on Carter, Zayne, and Leo added so much depth to the world. You’ll even find yourself empathizing with characters you never expected to care about!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars
What to expect: Morally grey hero 🖤 Trauma & Healing 🖤 Hurt/Comfort 🖤 Found Family 🖤 Touch her or him and ☠️ 🖤 Fiercely protective MC's 🖤
Ok easiest 5 stars ever! I quite literally devoured this book in under 5 hours. Not at a single point did I want to put it down. I was so invested in this story, and I needed to know how it was all going to end. Was I emotionally destroyed by this book, yes.... could I see straight through the tears streaming down my face.... no, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Kylo and Lia will live forever rent free in my head. 😍
I was so excited to continue Kylo and Lia's story, and this book did not disappoint.
Peace was never meant to last.
We pick back up where we left book 1. The war is intensifying with the Aether Hunters. Still trying to work through all the emotional trauma they have all been through. Lia is struggling with the powers she syphoned in the end of book 1 and what it means for her going forward.
Lia is still a fav FMC of mine; she has been through so much trauma in her life. And this woman continues to fight, when most people would just call it quits. She is so strong, fierce, compassionate and honestly just a total badass. She has crippling anxiety and the fear she experiences in this book quite literally gave me goosebumps. I just want to give her the biggest hug.
Kylo my man!! I love him so much. The way he supports Lia through her struggles 🫠👏🏽 You don't want to piss this man off or touch his woman because it the last thing you will ever do. I love how protective he is of not just Lia but this whole family. But he has his own struggles and trauma and watching him navigate them with Lia was so special. It was lovely to see this vulnerable side of him. And made me love him so much more. 😍
Still love their training scenes. The forced proximity adds soo much tension... 👏🏽🤌🏽
Watching their relationship grow in this book was one of my favorite parts. Learning new things about each other. Learning to lean on each other. Just connecting on a whole other level. Both the MCs really went through some serous character growth in this one. So much healing and love is woven throughout this book.
The chemistry between these two is epic. The spicy scenes were spicy and wonderful. 🌶️🌶️🌶️ These two can be in a room full of people and are having their own private conversation and being cheeky. (when Lia remembers to keep her guard up 🫢🤣) Love the naughty banter between these two.
"No matter how dark things get, you always know how to find me."
“You are not a temporary part of my life. You are woven into every part of me.”
Now this book is action packed with high stakes, full of heart racing scenes that have you on the edge of your seat. Sooo much suspense and tension. You will go through all the emotions with this one. (Have your tissues close.) There are scenes that will break your heart, put it back together and then break it all over again. There is a constant feeling of dread and anticipation throughout this book. You know something big is coming you just don't know when.
The side characters again are all fantastic. I'm quite attached to a few of them. Leo and Carter are still favs. And I want them to have the world. Seeing this side of Carter's life was so special. So excited to see what's happens with Leo. IYKYK.
I'm so sad that this book finishes off Kylo and Lia's story but at the same time I'm so happy with how it ended I can't even be mad about it. I loved they got the HEA they deserve. And I can't wait to see where the story goes, in the next book.
Highly recommend you check your triggers before diving into this one.
Lex has quickly become an auto read/buy Author for me. She just has a way of writing that has you so invested in the story and the emotions you're feeling that you totally forget about all your other responsibilities.
Thank you so much Lex for allowing me to arc read your book 🩷

Lessons in Madness really delivers on the emotional damage 😅 It takes you on a total roller coaster of characters being in danger, some flashbacks to traumatic past memories, and moments of devastation. Be prepared to have your feelings hurt 😂
I loved the continuation of Lia and Kylo’s relationship, and we got some great spice moments. It was so fun to see Lia come into her own in this book and gain even more strength and power. She goes through so much in this book and is willing to go to the ends of the earth to save the people she loves, even at the expense of herself.
Kylo is all blunt edges and pure weapon, except when it comes to her. How he treats her is so sweet and satisfying! It gives you the softness and caretaking vibes of a golden retriever mixed with the possessiveness and total annihilation of anyone who dares to threaten her that we’d expect in a morally grey dark romance MMC. There’s even one quote that gave Zade Maedows vibes, and another scene where I was absolutely giddy at the destruction he was causing 😂
The found family element was beautiful, and I loved the banter between some of the side characters too. Even though this duology is now complete, I’m looking forward to reading more of their stories in other projects underway!
Quotes I loved:
“I’m sorry I keep waking you.” “There’s nothing to be sorry for. If I could take the nightmares instead, I would.”
I’m going to stab him with my fork. He winks. “Careful. I might like it.”
“Hands up,” he commands, tapping the headboard. “Hold on.”
“There’s never enough time,” he whispers into my hair. “I could have you for a lifetime and still want more.”
His love is louder than every dark thought that haunts me.
“I’ll tear through this entire war just to get you alone somewhere with no one around for miles. I’m going to ruin you, Lia. You’ll cry out my name until your voice breaks.”
“You think crossing a line scares me more than losing you?” he whispers against my lips. “I’d carry your hatred for the rest of my life if it meant you still had one.”
“You’ve spent your whole life keeping yourself alive. Let me take care of you now.”
“Don’t close your eyes. Look at me while you take all of me. Show me how much you belong to me.”
We return from where we left of in "lessons in ruin," and because book 1 was so good, I could easily dive back in with minimal recap even after a few months. And Lex did not disappoint with how this story continued.
This book is filled with a boat load of suspense and action that has you gripped. The characters are Morally grey, and you love them for it. The banter and teasing as a whole team is so good, and you just want to route for this found family. The steam is definitely fogging every surface with so many spicy scenes, but it is done so perfectly that it doesn't feel too much. It's not just spice for the sake of adding a spicy scene. There is a reason behind it, and I love that connection more for it. Kyloe is the epitome of the saying "I will burn the whole world for you" and loved him for it.
The urban fantasy element I loved because It really feels nostalgic for me, It gives off a lot of vibes from tv shows i watched as a teen like heroes and gifted. And I have been really missing that lately, and this ticked all the boxes.
I loved getting to know Blairs story in this, and I really think you did her justice. And that end battle was everything, so much action and intense scenes that I was on the edge of my seat, not knowing how it would go.
The ending was very satisfying, and I didn't feel like anything was missing or left out. It was a really nice end to Kylo and Lia's story. Now I want a spin-off, maybe Leo's, or someone new but still interconnected. I just need more of this world.
Quotes ♡
“You think crossing a line scares me more than losing you?” he whispers against my lips. “I’d carry your hatred for the rest of my life if it meant you still had one.”
“Girl, your boyfriend is out there breaking people like glow sticks,” she huffs, gesturing wildly to the chaos. “Keep up!”
“You’ve spent your whole life keeping yourself alive. Let me take care of you now.”
I glare at him. “You’re insufferable.” He grins down at me, his dimple showing. “That didn’t stop you from falling for me.” “Trust me, it was the muscles. Not the words that come out of your mouth.”
I really enjoyed book two, although after all of the action at the end of the first book I was expecting this one to be full on from the very beginning, which wasn't really the case. It did take me a little while to get into because of that, but I still absolutely love this world the author has created with people having powers and the hunters hunting them down. The whole concept is so interesting and really well written, and I genuinely like all of the characters in this series.
I loved watching Lia get stronger and stronger throughout this book and finally start coming into her own powers. Seeing her learn more about what she is capable of and become more confident in herself was one of my favourite parts. But Kylo... this man is literally the ideal book boyfriend. I absolutely love the way he protects Lia while still supporting her and allowing her to become stronger in her own right. There is never any doubt about how he feels about her or where she stands with him and I found that so refreshing, especially compared to so many of the other books I have been reading lately. Sometimes I don't need a man to spend three books pretending he doesn't love the woman when we all know he does. Kylo is completely there for Lia and I loved him even more for it.
I also really enjoyed getting to see more of Blair and Draven in this book and I do think it gave them both some much needed explanations as to why they were doing the things that they did but I would have loved to see Draven do something to redeem his actions. Blair really just broke my heart but also her actions in this book didn't really match up for me in the things she did in book one so I would have loved to have seen more from her POV.
Overall, I really enjoyed this continuation of the series and I am definitely invested in this world and its characters now. After finding out who the main characters of book three are going to be, I am really looking forward to seeing where the story goes next and getting to spend more time in this world.
Lessons in Madness is an infinity star read for me! This story and these characters will stay with me forever. This was such a captivating story and definitely felt like a warm hug🥰. There was tons of action, twist and turns, lots of spice, and a whole lot of found family and new beginning vibes. I am so sad it’s over and I definitely did not want this to end.
The story continues exactly where we left off. Continuing the war against the Aether hunters. The story continues to show the healing that Lia and Kylo are struggling with and are going through. But still highlights how badass they are.
It’s hard to give a review without giving too much away or any spoilers from book one. There is so much action and so many heart stopping moments that have you on the edge of your seat when you’re reading. The scenes that she orchestrates on paper transport you directly into the book. I love all the powers, the telekinesis, and all the combat come to life.
I love Kylo & Lia’s love so much. Kylo is the best book boyfriend and is always there for her, especially with her trauma from her abusive father and suffering sexual assault. He is so patient and so gentle and I truly wish I had someone like that after what I had been through. Because we all deserve to feel safe. Lia is equally supportive of helping Kylo heal from his pain and all the regrets during the war. Their bond is so special and so strong. But also so damn sexy, and I could never get enough of their flirty banter or of both of them in general. His burn the world down for her vibes is everything and her willing to sacrifice her life to save him had me in tears throughout the book.
I truly love the found family vibes and all the connections each person has with each other. I love the way this book ended, and I cannot wait to see what’s to come in book 3 and the Novella after. This story makes me feel seen in a way it’s hard to describe. I will forever be a fan of Lex’s talent. I wish I could stay in this world with these characters forever🥺🩷✨
Lessons in Madness gave me exactly what I wanted from this world: more powers, more morally questionable decisions, more found family, more chaos… and a LOT more Kylo. 😂
One of my favourite things about this book was Lia’s growth. She’s stronger, more confident and finally starting to understand just how powerful she can be. But I really appreciated that her trauma doesn’t simply disappear because she’s in love or because time has passed. Her healing still feels like a process, and that made her development feel much more real.
And then there’s Kylo.
This man somehow managed to get even better. 😂 Protective, morally grey, completely obsessed with Lia and absolutely giving I will burn the world down for you energy. But what I loved most is that protecting her never means stopping her from becoming stronger herself. He wants to take care of her without making her smaller, and YES. We love to see it.
Their relationship also feels much more established here. There’s less uncertainty and more of them actually learning how to be together, trust each other and let the other person take care of them. And yes, the spice definitely increased. 🌶️😂
But I think what really made this book work for me was that the world started to feel bigger than Lia and Kylo.
Carter, Zayne, Leo, Blair… we get more of their histories, motivations and messy relationships, and I became much more invested in all of them. Some characters even had me completely reconsidering how I felt about them after book one.
Add the powers, training, morally grey characters, fights, twists and that final stretch of action, and this is such a fun mix of dark romance, urban fantasy and almost dystopian vibes.
Was everything perfect? Maybe not. There were a few moments where I wanted the story to move a little faster, but once everything started coming together, I was completely invested.
And now Lia and Kylo might be stepping out of the spotlight, but I am absolutely NOT ready to leave this world.
Give me the rest of these morally grey, traumatised, superpowered disasters.
I really enjoyed Lessons in Madness. Lia and Kylo were great again, but for me the absolute standout of this book was the found family.
I loved watching Lia and Kylo’s relationship develop beyond what we got in Lessons in Ruin. There’s more vulnerability between them, more trust, and you really see them learning how to lean on each other after everything they’ve been through. Kylo is still protective and morally grey, while Lia continues to be strong without suddenly being magically healed from all of her trauma.
And surprisingly… Carter did NOT steal this book from Kylo this time. 😂 His family did.
Getting more of Carter, his family and the wider group completely won me over. The relationships between everyone were probably my favourite part of the entire book. The found family feels genuine rather than just being a trope slapped onto the story, and I became ridiculously attached to them.
The plot itself had plenty happening and some genuinely tense moments. I liked seeing more of the war and the Aether Hunters, but this is also where I wanted more. We’re two books into this world now and I still have so many questions about the bigger picture. How do people with powers fit into normal society? How much does the outside world know? Where did all of this originate? I would have loved more history and worldbuilding to really understand the scale of what is happening.
What DID stand out was the emotional growth. There are some really beautiful moments around Lia figuring out what she actually wants from her future rather than simply surviving what has happened to her. I especially appreciated that some of those moments didn’t follow the predictable route I thought they might.
Overall, this was a really strong continuation of Lessons in Ruin. The characters are still what make this series for me, and the found family absolutely carried this one. I just want Lex to crack this world open even further because I NEED THE LORE.
What an emotional rollercoaster this was. There was a lot to digest, and it felt like everything happened in the blink of an eye.
We started with a bang, with our group being thrown into a dangerous situation that temporarily divided them before they found refuge in a safe house.
We learn what happened to Lia in the past and why she isn't adapting to her new situation as quickly as everyone wants her to. Seeing her treated like a liability was painful, and I really felt for her. She is only just starting to come out on the other side, and that is not how you treat someone in her position. That made me quite angry.
After the fast-paced beginning, we are allowed to take a breather, and I appreciated that a lot. It shifted the focus to character development, giving us a glimpse into their pasts and showing that there is much more connecting them than simply fighting for survival. There is a normal life waiting for all of them, and that is what they are fighting for.
Lia's powers are still very unstable, and she is sent away to learn how to control them better. This leads to our group being split up, and I already had a suspicion that their feeling of safety would only be temporary. That suspicion was quickly confirmed.
I enjoyed this one a lot. The pacing felt well balanced throughout. The transitions between the faster-paced moments and the slower ones were handled very well. Diving deeper into the characters' pasts showed that there is more to everyone's story, and Blair's story arc in particular felt special to me.
There was a small story arc between Kylo and Lia that I wasn't particularly interested in, but it didn't take away from the experience. Overall, this was an emotional journey that I was more than happy to come along for.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Every time Lex Lovely writes something, I make it a point to read it! I was lucky enough to receive an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book, and I truly felt honored to have had the chance to be part of this experience. Watching Lex develop as an author is simply wonderful.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark romance novels. With that being said, I also urge readers to carefully consider the trigger warnings included, as they serve an important purpose and help prepare you for the themes and content found within the book.
I absolutely loved Lessons in Ruin and I finished it in just one day, and I did the same with this book. My expectations for Lessons in Madness were set very high, and I am thrilled to say it surpassed every single one of them! Please be sure to set aside enough time to read this one because once you start, you won’t want to put it down!
Lessons in Madness continues the story right where Lessons in Ruin ended. I genuinely appreciated the ongoing feeling of danger lurking at every turn, which kept my heart pounding throughout the entire book.
Kylo’s character continues to evolve impressively, and watching Lia and Kylo learn to relinquish control and place their trust in each other was truly moving. Additionally, the level of spice in this book is absolutely off the charts!
Seeing Kylo and Lia’s relationship grow deeper was definitely one of the highlights, but gaining further insight into Carter, Zayne, and Leo added substantial depth to this story’s world. You might even find yourself empathizing with characters you never expected to care about!
Once again, thank you, Lex, for giving me the privilege of reading this book in advance. I honestly can’t wait for the third book in the series.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ OMG THEY KNEW EACH OTHER AS LITTLE BABIESSSSSSSS 😭😭😭 ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That reveal absolutely took me OUT. Of all the things I was expecting, THAT was not one of them, and suddenly I was sitting there thinking about everything that happened between them completely differently. I really loved where this book left everyone too. I am SO glad the war is finally over… AS FAR AS WE KNOW 👀 because at this point I trust absolutely nothing. But after everything these characters have been through, it felt so good watching everyone finally get the chance to breathe and figure out what comes next. They can actually go do what they need to do...or what they WANT to do...without constantly fighting just to survive. THEY DESERVE IT. Oh also, screw you Lovely...I was just starting to like Blair. There was something so satisfying about getting to the end and realizing how much has changed and how far everyone has come. It actually felt like we could exhale for a second. Whether that peace lasts is another question entirely because, again, I TRUST NOTHING. 😂 BUT NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS. LEO. AND. ZAYNE. THEY BETTER END UP TOGETHER. I SWEAR TO GOD. 😭 The potential??? I need it. I need THEM. If all of this is teasing me just for them not to end up together, I will personally be filing a complaint. Overall, I loved this one. The reveals, the relationships, the chaos, and finally getting some closure after everything that has happened made it such a satisfying read. I'm happy everyone gets the opportunity to move forward with their lives, but I'm also sitting here suspicious as hell because there is NO WAY we're completely done with the madness. And once again: LEO + ZAYNE. THAT IS ALL. 🫡
ARC copy provided by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’m not even sure where to start with this one because I feel like I’ve become way too attached to Lia and Kylo at this point. 😂❤️ After the first book, I was already invested in their story, so getting back into their world felt like coming back to something I’d been waiting for. From the beginning, I could feel that things were about to get messy again. Lia has changed so much, and I really loved seeing how much stronger she has become. She’s still dealing with everything that happened before, but there’s this determination in her now that I really enjoyed. She’s not just fighting for herself anymore — she’s fighting for the people she loves, and I think that made me care about her even more. And Kylo… honestly, I just really like him. 😂 There’s something about the way he and Lia are together that keeps pulling me in. Their relationship has so much history and emotion behind it now, and I found myself paying attention to every little moment between them. The looks, the conversations, the moments when they’re trying to understand each other — I loved all of it. I also really enjoyed seeing how much they’ve come to rely on each other. There’s still plenty they have to figure out, but you can feel that their bond has changed since the first book. And I was definitely rooting for them the entire way. This book also had me constantly worried about everyone. 😭 There were so many moments where I was reading and thinking, please let them have ONE peaceful moment. Every time I thought maybe things were finally going to be okay, I was waiting for the next disaster. What I loved most, though, was how emotionally invested I felt. I actually cared about what happened to Lia, Kylo, and the people around them. There were moments that made me smile, moments that made me nervous, and definitely moments where I wanted to yell at the characters because apparently making sensible decisions is too much to ask. 😂 By the end, I was completely invested all over again. I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters, and I NEED to know where Lia and Kylo’s story goes from here. 4 ⭐️/5 — I’m officially too attached to Lia and Kylo, and at this point I’m just along for the emotional damage. 😂❤️
🌶🌶 Wow... this was a WILD emotional ride! We are immediately pulled right back into the story and from the very first chapter I was completely invested. Lex does such an incredible job representing mental health throughout this series and it continues to be one of my favorite aspects of these books. This story was so intense that I constantly found myself flipping pages desperate to know what was going to happen next. Lia is such a strong FMC. She is resilient, determined and keeps pushing forward even when everything feels impossible. I loved watching her continue to grow throughout this book and seeing her become even stronger. And Kyro... I love him so much. The way he supports Lia is absolutely amazing. Their relationship continues to develop in such a beautiful way and I loved watching their bond grow deeper as the story progressed. One thing I really loved was how every character felt important to the story. No one felt like they was there just to fill space each character had their own purpose, personality and role to play. I found myself becoming attached to all of them which made the emotional moments hit even harder. We also get more backstory from the crew which helped so many pieces fall into place. Everything starts connecting, questions begin getting answered and the found family aspect of this series becomes even more meaningful. Honestly this series has one of my favorite found family dynamics. The spice is fairly mild in this installment but the emotional depth more than makes up for it. And that ending?! It was beautiful and left me immediately wanting to pick up book three. I'm honestly not ready to say goodbye to these characters yet I am absolutely loving this series and cannot wait to see what happens next.
Lex Lovely has done it again! Lessons in Madness, the second book in the Steel & Shadows series, was another phenomenal read and easily another 5 stars for me.
This series combines dark romance with thrilling action, morally gray characters, found family, trauma and healing, intense training and fight sequences, and incredible abilities like telepathy, telekinesis, astral projection, empathy, and more. It’s not technically dystopian, but it definitely gives me dystopian vibes—if Divergent and Silver Elite had a baby, this series would be it.
Lessons in Madness takes everything I loved about the first book and amps it up. There’s more action, more fighting, more abilities being discovered, and a massive showdown. We also get a new storyline involving Lia absorbing a dangerous dark energy that is slowly killing her, forcing her to find a way to expel it before it’s too late.
And then there’s Lia and Kylo. Their relationship develops even further in this book, bringing a lot more intimacy and spice. Kylo has officially become one of my all-time favorite book boyfriends. He’s morally gray, fiercely protective, completely obsessed with Lia, and gives off major “I will burn the world down for you” energy. I could not get enough of him!
I absolutely devoured this book. After loving Lessons in Ruin, I had high expectations for the sequel, and it completely delivered. I’m sad Lia and Kylo’s story may be coming to an end, but I’m already excited to see where Lex Lovely takes the other characters next.
I cannot recommend the Steel & Shadows series enough. I had an absolute blast reading both books, and this series has officially become a favorite.
This picks up right where book 1 left off in the aftermath of Joaquin's death. The hunt for Blair and Draven is still on. Lia is still reeling from Leo's surprise, and Kylo is still very much in love with her.
The training is brutal. The hunters are still out there, and Lia and Leo seem to be key in the coming battle. Everyone seemed to support each other and wanted to make each other better. Then there's Zayne. I hated how freaking rude he was and how he kept attacking Lia especially with her past demons that involved Draven and Julian, the men they were hunting. As a doctor, I wish he had more empathy.
I adored the introduction of Zara as a character. Another woman who got caught in a war she didn't belong in but who was all in on her family. I loved her budding friendship with Lia. She helped ground her when she needed it most.
Sone of the scenes were absolutely heartbreaking. Please be wary of your own mental health as some passages are hard to read. They are necessary to the story, but please read the triggers. I applaud Lex for addressing the mental health and for writing Lia as a fractured character who heals because of the support system around her. No one needs to fight alone.
I loved the continued relationship growth between Lia and Kylo. Like any couple it had its ups and downs, but the way they kept falling for each other all over again was beautiful. Even in the darkest moments they kept each other going. They saw the ugliest parts of each other's lives but kept choosing each other over and over.
The ending was very satisfying and the epilogue was absolute perfection. I would love to see a follow up novella about the Radshaw men. 6 star read, and Lex has landed herself on my must read author list.

This story continues to follow Lia as she struggles with nightmares that clash with reality due to her siphoning a power that was too dark and corrupted for her to handle. Even knowing this she has trouble parting with it because she feels that it may be the only thing that could keep them safe. Holding on is tearing her apart because now she is not only be hunted in the real world but she is being prayed on in her sleep which keeps the tension high through out the book.
I was kept on the edge of my seat with this book. It seemed that no matter how close the team thought they were getting to bringing Draven and the Ether hunters down, they were always a step behind..... even with the visions. One reckless, yet selfless decision, ends in a final battle. While the battle itself was not described in too much detail and felt a little anti-climatic, the wins and losses both hurt and made me high five the air.
I absolutely love Kylo and all the support he provided to Lia through out it all being the anchor she needed in a world she was still learning to navigate all while she was what he needed to break free of his continuous cycle of hate and revenge. Not only was their relationship dynamic strong I also enjoyed watching the entire crew grow closer together over the two books. The determination to protect their newfound family warmed my heart and gave a deeply satisfying feeling coming to the end of Kylo's and Lia's story.
As for the next book, I am interested in seeing who this surprise character will be and what is in store for Leo and Zayne. I for one can't wait to get into Leo's head and also am interested in seeing if there will be a new "big bad".

Lessons in Madness continues from where Lessons in Ruin ended and let me tell you, this book hit the ground running and I didn’t know peace for a single second! I don’t know what it says about me that I love the whole danger lurking round every corner, heart constantly pounding and the fates of fictional characters stressing me the hell out thing…but I don’t care! I’m here for it!
I loved Lessons in Ruin, so naturally had high expectations for Lessons in Madness. I’m so glad that it lived up to every single one!
You can’t help but care deeply for this group of characters. Despite everything that has been thrown at them, the losses, the torture, the constant threat-they aren’t hardened in a way that makes them unlikeable. They are survivors. They have done what they need to to survive and faced horrific things along the way. Yet, at the crux of it all, they just want to make the world a safer place for everyone-especially those they care about. Despite the risk to themselves. I can’t help but find that deeply admirable, these are characters you want to root for.
The story was well paced, perfectly balancing those quieter moments with the epic action scenes. I never found myself bored or skimming passages to find the next exciting part. This is exactly how you do a sequel!
I’m sad that this is the end of Lia and Kylo’s story but am so excited to see where the rest of the series goes!
*Thank you Lex for letting me ARC read for you again!
Lessons in Madness started right where Lessons in Ruin left off, and I was captivated the entire way through.
There was so much action which kept my heart racing, and so many unexpected twists that had me guessing, engaged and bracing myself. Kylo as the broody, hot MMC is believable in his strength of character and devotion to Lia, the book's tortured FMC. Lia irritated my a bit in the first book but in this follow up, she really redeemed herself. Her character development and growth was done very well, so much so that I found myself respecting her tenacity and self-sacrificial behavior. She's able to overcome her trauma and find her way back to herself, and to a life she never allowed herself to believe was possible.
A few things I especially appreciated were the author including some very real issues some women face, and some I unfortunately experienced myself. I don't want to spoil anything, but Lia also endured significant trauma in her past, and the consequences of what she went through were portrayed in a way that felt visceral and impactful.
And that ending? It had me with tears in my eyes.
Some of my favorite quotes:
I don't see what I lost. I see everything I still want to live for.
His love is louder than every dark thought that haunts me.
Tropes: 🌹 Who Hurt You 🖤 A Morally Grey, Broody MMC 🌹 Trauma & Healing 🖤 Spice 🌹 Touch Her or Him and Die

I'm such a fan of Lex Lovely and can't wait to see what more she has in store for us.
