There are no words. NO WORDS TO REVIEW PERFECTION! This book will make you wonder if you’ve been too generous with your 5 star reviews. Do whatever you have to do to get your hands on this book. I’ve read over 200 books this year and this is my absolute favorite. I’m dead after reading this. Just gone. Almost 600 pages in one sitting, downed, gone, ravished, and consumed without mercy, and I’m just going to have to sit here with my feelings until her next piece of perfection graces my shelf.
Brennan and Bea are everything. The slow culminating devotion, the tension, the resistance, the guilt, the longing, the protecting, the risking - all of it was just the best romance writing you can read. I’m not allowed to pull quotes ohhhhh but I would and you would be on your knees for these two. Nothing forced, everything was so natural and the dialogue felt so alive and real. The action was incredibly vivid and had you quite literally furiously turning pages. Not to mention creepy. Like the shivers will take you by surprise. So exceptionally well timed and the word choice used just sends you there. BUT THE STORY WAS THE CENTERPIECE. The romance didn’t need to drive it forward (despite how absolutely pure and perfect it was) there was a whole world of characters and history backing this entire setting. The folklore tied into this is genius, and absolutely fascinating. Brilliant ideas that are full fledged out, no gaps other than the mystery that needs to be revealed. So much of the story takes place where Bea is trapped and yet, that area I could practically paint a picture for you, it was so alive by the time I was done. The author has no mercy for your heart though! Brace yourself. I cried. Haven’t cried from a book in a LONG time. But I cried. The tortured souls are just going to eat you away. BEST BOOK OF 2026. Hands down. You like historical fantasy fiction with romance? If you don’t, you will after reading this. Throw down the money and buy it. Thank me later!

This book was truly a breath of fresh air in the romantasy genre. I was hooked from page one with its unique premise, steady pacing and mystery, and likable but nuanced characters.
Bea, is the Washwoman who is being punished for a horrible crime. She has to wash the clothes of the dead and send the clothes down the river into the afterlife to give the souls peace as an act of penance. Without spoiling, the circumstances in which Bea and the MMC (Brennan) meet was as heartbreaking as it was hopeful. Bea with her unbreakable spirit and Brennan with his firm sense of justice and honor fill the book with tension and yearning that I have been craving from a romantasy book.
The author showed such an empathetic, soft, kind, yet unbelievably brave character in Bea, that I found myself needing an almost constant reminder of why she’s even being punished. Brennan’s complicated feelings between what he witnesses firsthand with Bea & knows in his heart vs. what he’s been conditioned to believe creates such a complicated but believable relationship between the two main characters.
The love is gentle and gradual with the author taking time for the couple to get to know another other. What starts as a “hate to love” situation eventually turns into a beautiful romance about seeing people as they truly are.
The ending was filled with a few surprises! Some I could predict but a few I did not see coming at all but sets up a solid start to the next book.
There are a few heavy topics, so be sure to read the triggers and take care of yourself.

Bea has gone through so much and yet the horrors still persist. But so does she. Her innate strength is admirable but what really endeared me to her was the fact that despite the curse on her, despite being forced to do such a task, she washes the clothes with care and kindness. She does the best job she can to ensure people’s souls will safely pass. The first few times she did it brought a tear to my eye and then we got to know her more. What a woman Bea is. Kindness just exudes from her and the way she cares for others above herself could be considered foolish, yet for her it makes complete sense. I’m very excited to see where things will lead for Bea!
It took me a while to warm up to Brennen. I could understand that his loss made him seek vengeance, that he wanted to protect people - especially after he couldn’t protect someone precious to him. But when we see that harsh exterior start to soften, I found myself more engaged with him and his interesting thought process. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he’s a rugged Scottish man with what is almost certainly a highly delightful accent… He goes on quite the journey here and where he ends up was not something I anticipated at all! His further character development is something I am incredibly invested in (and not just because he’s protective, wears a kilt and could make panties drop with his voice… Nope, not at all…)
I was introduced to this author through her release of Poetry by Dead Men, which is worlds away from this story. I adored it so when the opportunity to read her newest novel came around, I jumped at it instantly. As someone who loves folklore interwoven into fantasy stories, this was absolute perfection for me. Add in that it’s full of hunky Scottish men.. well, what’s not to like? The plot flows like the river it’s centred around and is deeply rooted in emotion that just held me captivated from the first chapter. I adored how intwined the Scottish folklore is into everything we read because it helped bring everything alive. The characters did that too, fleshing out the story and making it something visceral and engaging. We see so many different personalities, be it only for a flash or for some time, and they all contributed in some way which is the best. In fantasy especially, some characters can be there just for the sake of it. But everyone here had a purpose which just makes a book better in my eyes. Romance wise, we are treated to quite the spectacle. The yearning and the angst, the softly spoken words dulling the edges of sharp actions, the attraction and the frustration, it was all so cleverly crafted. Shade has a magical ability to make a romance feel like it is the entire world, that anything other than the height of passion and emotion is dull and unimportant. This story can thrive without romance, I am entirely confident in that, but with it? It practically leaps from the page and consumed me whole! The ending though… That had my jaw on the floor. I didn’t have a single inkling until the last few chapters and then BOOM, it hit all at once. I am now DESPERATE for the next book because that cliffhanger at the end was both cruel and amazing!
Overall, The Washwoman at the River’s End is a stunning story that has left me desperate for more.

I absolutely devoured this story and could not put it down from start to finish! 100% my book of 2026 so far.
This story has me infatuated and it will stay with me for years to come. It is so incredibly beautiful, yet also deeply haunting. I wish I could erase my memory and experience it for the first time all over again!
I love Megan's writing, her attention to detail, unique magic system, lore and worldbuilding. You can't help but connect with and love each of her characters, feeling their pain, grief and struggles with them. This story was an emotional rollercoaster and one I would gladly ride again and again! The themes are handled so delicately and gracefully, kindness throughout suffering, love despite loss and betrayal, redemption after darkness. Just breathtaking!
The ending...the twists... had my jaw dropping and I am now desperately waiting for the next instalment of this story!

This book was such a treat. What a unique and captivating storyline. There were so many things I absolutely adored about it. The tension. The yearning. The slow burn. Top tier. The grumpy x sunshine? Absolutely perfect. I could honestly go on and on because this book had all my favorite tropes!!
And Brennen? I’ll happily be Brennen’s good little lass any day. We LOVE a man who simply cannot help how he feels. The romance and plot are absolutely neck & neck in this! Which…. Seriously what more can you ask from a romantasy?!!
I will say I struggled a bit with the first half, which is why this lands at 4.5⭐ for me instead of 5. I wasn’t completely invested until about the midway point. Whether that was because it’s been such a busy summer or just the pacing of the story, I’m not totally sure. Just keeping it honest!
But trust me when I say the payoff is so worth it. The twists completely caught me off guard, and I was so impressed by where this story went. It has all the atmospheric vibes that make it the perfect fall read, and I have no doubt people are going to be obsessed when it’s released.
Now excuse me while I impatiently wait for book two… Megan. 👀

A broody Scottish soldier versus the wash woman with an unbreakable spirit…
First of all, I had never heard of the wash woman before this book. What a unique idea to build this amazing story around.
Where to begin?
The world building is paced perfectly to my taste of enough but not feeling overwhelming. The Author also provided a glossary to understand the Gaelic language used & a map to immerse yourself in this book! So much care was put into making sure that every reader could enjoy it.
Bea is such a well written character that it makes it hard not to love her. Despite what she has done, her heart is on every page and you can’t help but root for her.
Brennen was so different. He isn’t like every other MMC. His moral compass leads him. Although it can make him hard headed & broody, it also makes for a character whose actions are just & true to his word. You understand his need for revenge, even if you don’t like it.

What a breath of fresh air this book was! It felt completely different from anything else I've read in the this genre. The combination of a beautifully executed slow-burn, one-sided enemies-to-lovers romance, incredible writing, and a magic system rooted in Scottish folklore made this such a refreshing read. The MC’s were kind, caring, compassionate, and mature, also refreshing! Did this book still include some of our favorite tropes? Absolutely. The weaving of those familiar tropes into such a unique world made the story feel exciting, intriguing, and completely captivating. This is definitely one of my favorite reads this year.
The writing was phenomenal. It was descriptive without becoming overly flowery, emotionally rich without feeling heavy, and perfectly balanced. Megan showed rather than told, allowing me to experience every emotion alongside the characters. I could vividly picture every scene, felt completely immersed in the world, and constantly wanted to keep reading.
I was hooked almost immediately. The story opens with the MFC already being punished for committing an unforgivable crime. Her sentence was to become the Washwoman. I had never heard of the Washwoman before reading this book, and learning about that piece of Scottish folklore was fascinating. It added another layer of uniqueness to an already incredibly original story.
The pacing started out slow to moderate, giving the author plenty of time to develop the world, magic system, characters, and mysteries. Then, around the last 20%, everything accelerated. I genuinely couldn't stop reading and ended up finishing it in one sitting. The antagonist was someone I absolutely loved to hate, and Megan wasn't afraid to kill off a character or two, which kept the stakes feeling very real.
Mystery was woven into every aspect of the story. The biggest question throughout was what the MFC had actually done to deserve such a horrific punishment and what had really happened when she escaped. Instead of revealing everything through one massive information dump, Megan slowly sprinkled clues throughout the book, allowing me to form theories while still keeping me guessing until the very end.
Beyond the central storyline of the MMC being sent to end the MFC's life while she searched for the five items needed to break her curse, there were so many fascinating threads woven throughout the novel. The disappearing women, one fate and her games, the MFC's unusual visions, and the approaching Epoch all seemed separate at first. Watching every storyline gradually converge into one cohesive, satisfying conclusion was rewarding.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was how much empathy Megan created for both main characters. The MFC had clearly done something horrific, yet I never found myself hating her. Instead, Megan carefully showed the devastating consequences of her punishment and the immense emotional toll it had taken. Through her experiences, we witnessed suicidal ideation, self-harm, emotional devastation, numbness, fear, and overwhelming guilt. Early on, it was suggested that she had suffered a psychotic break when the murders occurred, and I immediately suspected there was far more to the story than simply a "broken mind." Rather than presenting her as either good or evil, Megan created an incredibly nuanced character who had endured something unimaginable and had been paying for it ever since. When the truth was finally revealed, the payoff was worth the wait.
Another aspect of the MFC I LOVED and was again a breath of fresh air was who the MFC was and how she coped with trauma. She was so kind and kept to her values, no matter what happened to her. She wasn’t bitter or mean, she stayed kind, empathetic, caring, and compassionate. In a genre of angry, sassy, stabby, crabby, avoidant, and lashing out MFC’s, this kind, warm, compassionate MFC was amazing. Now, don’t get me wrong, being scared and angry after trauma is realistic, but that is only one way of coping post trauma; yet, seems to be the only one represented lately in this genre. It is so redundant and lacks diversity. I loved that Megan represented another way of coping!
I also found myself deeply invested in the MMC. From the very beginning, we saw the profound grief he carried after losing the love of his life. Again, Megan never simply told us he was hurting, she made us feel it. He began the story with a very rigid sense of morality, viewing everything as black and white. As the story progressed, watching that worldview slowly evolve while he still remained true to his core values was one of my favorite examples of character growth in the book. And YES, he totally reminded me of Jamie Fraser 😘
The romance was exactly what I want from a slow burn. This was truly a one-sided enemies-to-lovers relationship, and every step of their emotional journey felt earned. There were no sudden shifts or unbelievable changes in feelings. Instead, we watched the MMC slowly question his beliefs while both characters gradually developed trust, respect, and eventually love. After reading several romances recently where the relationship progression felt rushed, this one was such a welcome change. Every emotional beat felt authentic, and I believed every moment of their relationship.
Also, I absolutely love a strong bond and deep loyalty between couples that are good fit for each other. I loved, I mean loved, the loyalty by the MMC to the MFC at the end. Of note, the MFC was always loyal to the MMC. Therefore, I absolutely adored her and how much she stood by him. That was exactly what I wanted!
The spice was perfect! The first moments where they wanted to be intimate, but couldn’t touch skin to skin was such a fantastic part of the story. There was so much tension and heat in that moment. Eventually, much later, when they figured out how they could touch, it was such a beautiful scene.
Then there was that ending...WOW. I guessed one very small piece of what was coming, but everything else completely shocked me. I'm usually not someone who predicts endings very well, so readers who enjoy theorizing may catch a few more hints than I did. Even so, I genuinely don't think most people will see the full picture before everything is revealed. It was shocking, emotional, satisfying, and left me wanting book two ASAP.
And one completely random note: there was one scene that gave me serious The Ring vibes. The one where the girl crawls out of the TV. It was spooky and creepy!
I definitely will be buying a copy of this book to add to my bookshelf!

What a breath of fresh air this book was! It felt completely different from anything else I've read in the this genre. The combination of a beautifully executed slow-burn, one-sided enemies-to-lovers romance, incredible writing, and a magic system rooted in Scottish folklore made this such a refreshing read. The MC’s were kind, caring, compassionate, and mature, also refreshing! Did this book still include some of our favorite tropes? Absolutely. The weaving of those familiar tropes into such a unique world made the story feel exciting, intriguing, and completely captivating. This is definitely one of my favorite reads this year.
The writing was phenomenal. It was descriptive without becoming overly flowery, emotionally rich without feeling heavy, and perfectly balanced. Megan showed rather than told, allowing me to experience every emotion alongside the characters. I could vividly picture every scene, felt completely immersed in the world, and constantly wanted to keep reading.
I was hooked almost immediately. The story opens with the MFC already being punished for committing an unforgivable crime. Her sentence was to become the Washwoman. I had never heard of the Washwoman before reading this book, and learning about that piece of Scottish folklore was fascinating. It added another layer of uniqueness to an already incredibly original story.
The pacing started out slow to moderate, giving the author plenty of time to develop the world, magic system, characters, and mysteries. Then, around the last 20%, everything accelerated. I genuinely couldn't stop reading and ended up finishing it in one sitting. The antagonist was someone I absolutely loved to hate, and Megan wasn't afraid to kill off a character or two, which kept the stakes feeling very real.
Mystery was woven into every aspect of the story. The biggest question throughout was what the MFC had actually done to deserve such a horrific punishment and what had really happened when she escaped. From the first page I was completely swept away and knew I was reading something special.
Bea, the FMC, is absolutely EVERYTHING. Her strength, her wit, her heart, all of it was perfect.
The Washwoman at the River’s End was unlike anything I have ever read before and it left me craving more of this story and this magic and these characters. I will never stop thinking about this book.
This was hands down a six star read and Megan Shade is now an auto buy author for me.

Bea is cursed to the shores of the River Basail waving the clothes/souls of those who have passed before they enter the After. Brennen a guardian of The Cutter is dispatched to ensure the Washwoman does not escape and find a way to end her life for the disappearance of women throughout the kingdom. He is selected due to his personal vendetta against the Washwoman for her killing his betrothed. Once he arrives and discovers the true nature of Bea doesn’t match the tales and words from the Cutter does his heart begin to change.

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book and I cannot express how much I love it. The story is so well written, it hooked me from the first chapter and just kept pulling me back in. I am so excited for this series! Megan absolutely killed it… with the banter, the slow burn, and the close proximity… I mean, who doesn’t love a broody Scottish soldier?! Brennan may just be my new favorite book boyfriend!

5⭐️ Some books make you question your own definition of what a "good book" means to you. This is one of those books.
I went into it knowing all the hype and thinking it was likely going to be a good book. I did not think it was going to astound me the way that it did. This book is fantastic.
Every theory I came up with that I thought had substance was completely turned on its head by the end of this book. I felt like I did at the end of other books that took me by surprise in the last twisty chapters - Onyx Storm, Child of Shivay, Metal Slinger, One Dark Window - and I immediately felt like I needed to do a reread to better understand how I missed all the clues leading up to that point.
The Washwoman at the River's End is so unique, it's almost hard to put the significance of the story into words. It's such a clever, careful blend of aspects from the true washerwoman folklore with the fiction of this story.
There were scenes that terrified me (i.e. the ghosts haunting the river), and scenes that filled me with dread, shock or sorrow. There's an underlying theme of grief and healing that made me pause and ponder life and death.
Bea, the main female character and washwoman who is physically chained to the river, has experienced a shocking level of discrimination, abuse and violence for over a century at the hands of people who both fear and/or are fascinated by who she is and what she represents. Despite this, she has maintained her own compassion and humanity. Her story is a true testament to how history handed down from one generation to the next can become so warped that people can no longer tell fact from fiction, separate humans from myth and monsters.
Brennen, the main male character and guard, might be one of the most ethical, moral and loyal characters I've ever encountered in a book. His loyalty to his duty and need to always abide by the rules frustrated me greatly throughout, but eventually made SO much sense.
You don't quite realize just how much careful focus and planning on the author's part had to go into the development of these two characters, Bea and Brennen, until you get to the end of this story and fully understand what you have.
The coming Epoch of monsters, the dragons, the Faerie Pools, the unusual body runes and clever magic, the concept of the Fates - there are SO many elements to this book that were so deeply fascinating! It's not an action-packed story, but it doesn't need to be; I couldn't stop turning pages trying to figure out the truth to this tale.
And the yearning between Bea and Brennen? Every time Brennen grumbled "Good lass," I melted. 🫠 😍 I honestly couldn't work out how this was going to move from hate to love on the part of the MMC because his feelings were so justified. But how this part of the story was handled felt so natural and earned.
This book is everything it claims to be. It's spooky, complex, grounded in folklore, atmospheric and intriguing. With an ending like that, this story will be one that sticks with me right up until I can finally satisfy my curiosity with book two.
If you like dark gothic tales that are equal parts terrifying and fascinating, that challenge you to think outside the box, that blend history with fantasy, and have a forbidden love that feels both impossible and all-consuming, you're going to enjoy this unusual book.

Beautiful. Captivating. Imaginative.
This story was utterly spellbinding. I was completely swept away by the unique mythology and lore, which had such strong Scottish/Celtic influences. In a genre that is overflowing with Greek and Roman mythology, this felt like such a refreshing and exciting change. The author even incorporates phonetic spellings of certain words, which added another layer of immersion. It gave me very Diana Gabaldon Outlander vibes with the “dinnae ken” and Gaelic-inspired word choices, and I absolutely loved it.
This story is beautiful and tragic, exploring loss, grief, anger, and the many wounds people carry throughout their lives. It isn’t an emotional rollercoaster in the traditional sense, but wow… I felt things. The emotional depth sneaks up on you, and when it hits, it hits.
And the romance! WOW. This is absolutely a fantasy novel with romance, and I would describe it as a true slow burn with very mild spice. The yearning… oh sweet baby Jesus. The tension, the longing, the stolen moments—Brennen had my toes curling, had me giggling like a schoolgirl, and there were definitely moments where I was biting my lip and fanning myself. Absolutely scrumptious.
The ending! Y’all… I did not fully see it coming. I came REALLY close on one aspect, but Megan absolutely got me—and that does not happen often! The cliffhanger was perfection. It wrapped up the main storyline while beautifully setting the stage for book two. I also confirmed with the author that this will be a trilogy, with even more of this incredible world and mythology to be explored in future books, and I am already excited.
The pacing was fantastic. There was never a moment where I thought, “Okay, get to the point,” or felt like the story was dragging. Between the emotional moments, action sequences, and scenes that were genuinely intense, I was completely engrossed from the very first page.
Now, the characters…
FINALLY. A strong and resilient FMC who is still kind, compassionate, and soft. Bea has endured truly horrific things, but those experiences don’t erase who she is at her core. She is loving, feminine, and deeply human. I adored that strength wasn’t defined by hardness.
And Brennen… excuse me while I add another book boyfriend to the list. He is easily in my top five. I genuinely want my own Brennen. He’s a fierce warrior with strong morals, a little morally gray when the situation calls for it, but ultimately guided by a deep desire to do what is right.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best books I’ve read all year. The writing is gorgeous—not quite lyrical, but immersive in every way that matters. The world, the characters, the mythology, the romance, and the emotions all pulled me in completely.

I finished this book in two days because I could not stop reading. This is a gorgeous 6 star read about life and death and sadness and hope. It's a dark romantic folklore that keeps you engaged and guessing until the very end.
Bea is chained to the river where she is forced to wash the clothes of those who have died as a punishment for her own actions. And you absolutely feel her isolation and sadness. It's palpable throughout the book and I constantly wondered if she was the monster that the town thought she was or if she was good and misunderstood.
And then Brennen enters the story and struggles with exactly that dilemma. The right and the wrong and his feelings in between. Is Bea someone who deserves punishment or is she something different and good?
This book centers on the two of these characters for the entire book and you feel connected to them throughout it all. And lonely with them in the best of ways. This book is complicated and beautiful with a slow burn romance and a gorgeous world in the woods and by the river. The themes of when it's time to die and what happens when lives end are throughout this book and part of the folklore.

I am honestly at a loss for words because The Washwoman at the River’s End is easily one of my favorite reads of 2026. Megan Shade has a way of writing stories that completely pull you in — the kind that make you laugh, hurt, and sob all within the same pages.
The banter between Bea and Brennen was EVERYTHING. This was truly an enemies-to-lovers romance, and it was delicious. The tension, the slow shift from hatred to trust, and the way their love story unfolded had me completely invested. I wanted to read this book again for the first time so that I could experience that ending all over again.
This story is so much more than a swoony romance. It’s a beautiful story about love, sacrifice, grief, and finding hope when it feels impossible.
This is a book you absolutely do not want to skip! Read it for the enemies-to-lovers perfection, stay for the stunning storytelling, and prepare yourself for an unforgettable love story.

The banter between Bea and Brennen was EVERYTHING. This was truly an enemies-to-lovers romance, and it was delicious. The tension, the slow shift from hatred to trust, and the way their love story unfolded had me completely invested. I wanted to read this book again for the first time so that I could experience that ending all over again.
This story is so much more than a swoony romance. It’s a beautiful story about love, sacrifice, grief, and finding hope when it feels impossible.
This is a book you absolutely do not want to skip! Read it for the enemies-to-lovers perfection, stay for the stunning storytelling, and prepare yourself for an unforgettable love story.

What a freaking ride this book was.
The concept of the story alone sucks you in. A woman cursed to wash the dead’s clothing for all eternity and a man headstrong on killing her to avenge his fiancé… come on, that all by itself is intriguing. Then you add the beautiful highlands, a warrior who says “Good Lass”, and the constant battle of morality through the book and you just have a hands down amazing read. I cannot wait to see what is in store for us in the next book!

This book was so amazing until the end. Would have been better as a standalone. 600 pages with a slow pace would have been worth it if this was a standalone. Such a unique story; love the lore, the magic system, the slow burn romance and character development. But to end it like that doesn’t even make sense for the plot line and what needs to be done immediately.

I really enjoyed The Wash Woman by River's End. It blends Scottish folklore, hidden identities, and mystery in a way that kept me guessing from beginning to end.
One of my favorite parts was trying to figure out what was actually going on. There are so many little bits of foreshadowing and breadcrumbs throughout, but they’re subtle enough that you actually have to put the pieces together yourself. I genuinely felt like I was sleuthing at times 😂 There are also quite a few reveals toward the end, and it was really fun seeing how everything I’d been questioning started to come together.
Bae and Brennen have that enemies-to-lovers, will-they-won’t-they dynamic with plenty of secrets and hidden identities thrown into the mix. Their romance didn’t completely grab me yet, mostly because there’s quite a bit of guilt and hesitation surrounding their feelings, but I really liked where things ended up. The ending especially made me excited to see how their chemistry and relationship develop from here.
The pacing was probably the main thing that kept this from being a 5-star read for me. The first third or so felt a little slower than it needed to be, but once the story started revealing more of its secrets, I was much more invested. I also loved the overall Scottish folklore vibes and just wish I’d felt a little more immersed in the atmosphere because the setting and lore had so much potential.
Overall, this was a really fun and different read. The writing was great, I loved the lore, and the mystery of figuring out who everyone really was kept me invested. Definitely recommend if you like folklore-inspired fantasy, hidden identities, enemies-to-lovers, lots of secrets, and books that make you put the clues together yourself.

Oh my goodness….I just finished reading this beautiful and captivating story. There are not enough words to describe how this story made me feel. This book has run all kinds of emotions through me, happiness, grief, anger, hope, and literally destruction of my heart. I’m just in awe. I’ve had to sit with my thoughts for a moment before writing this review, trying to come up with the right words.
This story is about a young woman who is cursed to wash the clothes of the dead for a horrific crime she committed over a century ago. Chained to a riverbed, she is alone, guarded by a dragon, and feared by the locals, she washes the clothes for every individual’s death in the Kingdom to prepare them for the afterlife. For a century, she has been alone, starving, exposed to the elements, sometimes beaten and tortured by those with hate in their hearts. This has been her routine, her life, everyday without end. Numb to this cruel world and punishment, she continues to wash the clothes of the dead, in hope the gods will grant her mercy for her crimes. One day the river warns her that “He is coming.” Who? Who is he?
There are books you read that you enjoy, and then there are books that change you, they make you feel a certain way when you’re done. This is one of those. Beautifully written leaning on Scottish/Celtic influence, with multiple POVs, prisoner/guard trope, one tent, oaths of vengeance, grief, torture, forgiveness, hope, and love. If you loved Outlander, The Incendiary, Knight and the Moth, When the Moon Hatched, or Road of Bones, I would recommend this to you.

The Washwoman at the River’s End by Megan Shade is about a woman named Bea who has been cursed to wash the clothes of the dead. When women in the surrounding villages go missing a soldier is sent to where the Washwoman lives to find out what is happening and to find a way to kill her.
This book was truly a spectacular read! The story was beautiful and the characters were authentic and remained so even as they developed throughout the story.
As someone who loves mythology and folklore, Megan did a phenomenal job incorporating Scottish fokelore into this story. It truly made you feel like you were transported to Scotland as you were reading this.
Also the foreshadowing and breadcrumbs sprinkled throughout this story had me spiriling and theorizing the whole time through! Even through all that theorizing the ending still had me shocked. I absolutely cannot wait to read more!!
On a side note, the chapter art for this book and it is STUNNING! I loved how it changed with the characters as the story progressed!

Wow! This story was hauntingly beautiful. This was so different from anything I've read before in the best way.
Bea is the Washwoman, known as the monster from a tale that parents tell their children to frighten them. She is forced to wash the clothing of the recently deceased for all of eternity.
Brennen has experienced firsthand the horrors of the Washwoman. He has a made a vow of vengeance against her. But after women start disappearing across the realm he gets assigned to be her guard. Will he find the monster he's spent years hating, or will Bea be something he wasn't expecting?
The setting, the folklore, the hauntingly beautiful songs, the story slowly unfolding as you go.. Just perfection. I felt like I could picture the River Basail perfectly with Lolly flying overhead. I love Bea, she is one of my favorite FMC's. The epitome of strength and grace. And Brennen.. Boy do I love a broody Scottish man. This was a great example of how to do a slow burn, in my opinion. The Washwoman at the Rivers End is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2026! Thank you so much to the author, Megan Shade for the eARC!

My qualms that made me rate it under 4 stars: the ending and mystery unfolding happened very abruptly and I’m still not sure I completely understand.

I REALLY loved the concept. The washwoman washing souls? Trapped to wash the souls of the dead FOREVER? Being forever tormented by every death? Having to collect tokens of the living to break her spell so she can finally rest? WOW. I was HOOKED. Incredibly unique and what an interesting character to get to know! I love Scotland so much I bullied my fiance to TAKE ME TO THE HIGHLANDS and marry me in 2024, so I screamed when I saw this come up as an ARC. I'd like to consider myself a connoisseur of Scottish romantasy. This story was MADE for me. And we started off strong with SUCH a cool and unique premise!
I think my biggest disappointment was the setting. We are supposed to be in Scotland, but the entire book takes place in a river bed, or a couple scenes in a tavern. The only thing Scottish about this story is the MMC's accent, and the mentioning of kilts on 2 pages, and some historical folklore names. I didn't smell the heather, I didn't see the gloomy weather, I didn't get a Scottish vibe at all. Where were the castles? The ruins? The faeries? The clans? There is so much more to Scotland than an accent and a kilt, the setting of Scotland itself is otherworldly and mysterious but all we get its a rocky riverbed.
I also had some issues with the writing. The author seemed to really struggle to describe actions and settings. I had a hard time determining where the characters were, or where they were located in relation to each other. In one line, a character would be sitting on the ground, in the next sentence they were charging or pacing or doing some other action, but there was no indication of them moving or standing up. It made the story disjointed and I was often confused about what was happening. I also had a hard time determining what time of day it was because things were described oddly or not at all.
There was a lack of world building as well. The story revolves around "the fates" and "gods" but we learn almost nothing about the hierarchy, what they do, who is in charge, how the interact with the world, etc. And the names were confusing, often flipping between to celtic terms and their english names to describe the same thing.
Our characters were alright... I wouldn't say fantastic because neither of them seemed to have any real flaws or depth. Our FMC was naive and immature. Obviously a sweet and tormented individual, but after being alive for over 100 years and seeing as much death as she had, you would think she would act a little different. Possibly be a little jaded. Our MMC was a generic do gooder. He was at least more interesting because he battled with his feelings for his dead fiance and the morality of caring for our FMC. They were just ok in my book, mostly one dimensional but sort of interesting characters.
I did find the story really interesting. I just wanted MORE. It ended up feeling very generic in the end. It had all the ingredients for a banger, but left me disappointed.

I have now added Brennen to the list of my favorite MMCs that yearn, and oh my God, is he just everything!! I was swooning!! He yearns, he is respectful, and he is honorable to the bone, but he also loves deeply and beautifully!!
This book is one of my favorite representations of true enemies to lovers. Again, this was so brilliantly written. The pacing of Bea and Brennen' interactions, every conversation, every thought, every inner monolog and conflict were so finely thought out, and measured like it's science. Absolutely nothing was forced, you could feel the respect, you could feel the change of heart, you could feel care!! It was so natural and beautiful!! I want to give the author so much praise for that!! That is extremely hard to achieve, with pure love being the goal and not lust. And it was perfectly executed!!

Just as MMC, the FMC, Bea, has also become one of my favorite FMCs. Her kindness was genuine, she is good, she is loving, and she is forgiving. She is extremely strong and soft at the same time. And that's my favorite type of FMC!!
I had thoughts and ideas, however I could not predict the ending. I absolutely have not see that plot twist coming, and I am so very happy with it!! Not to spoil anything, but it is refreshing and very much what I love in romantasies!! And I am excited for more books in this series!!

I absolutely was enthralled by this book from the get go. Described as Outlander meets One Dark Window, it was atmospheric, dark and mysterious. Megan has such a beautiful way of storytelling, and this Scottish Folklore tale was so beautifully crafted and you felt like you were down along the riverbank with Bea and Brennan.
Key lessons that I have taken from book:
Acts of kindness and compassion can make such an impact on someone’s life.
Easier to accept misinformed and fear based opinions on someone than questioning facts.
Finding comfort in small things that we take for granted (shelter, food, company etc)
Coping mechanisms (Bea stacking rocks and Brennans wood carving), meanings behind these are more subconscious than they appear.

This book deserves all the praise and accolades that gets/ will get. I’m absolutely stunned at how wonderfully woven in the hints to the plot twist were. I did not expect anything at all, and my initial guess for the plot twist was way off-target. I loved reading this book and I will rave about it sooo much because of how GOOD it is.
Now, let’s get into it— this is 5 stars material because of the world building, character development, unique plot, plot twist, and slow burn/ enemies(on one side) to lovers tropes. Megan knows how set up the character background, emotions, and actual background. At no point in this story did I feel like I was lost and had to go back a few pages to understand what was going on. I read, understood, and felt each thing.
Character development was amazing. I don’t want to go into too much detail because it might spoil the plot if I do. All I can say is that the character development was thought-out and fit perfectly into the puzzle pieces that make this beautiful book. Bea was also my favorite character because she was so genuine, kind, and sympathetic/ empathetic of others. Pure of heart, in my eyes.
The unique plot of tying scottish folklore into this gothic romantasy was amazing. I’ve never read anything about scottish folklore, but, the way Megan intertwines and explains it here, as well as how to say the words, makes it clear and intriguing (as it should be).
Plot twist was PLOT-TWISTING. You just need to read it. I was wrong about the plot twist and I’m usually 90% right. But, lately, my plot twist intuition has been dropping and I love it!
Lastly, the slow burn and the kinda enemies (it was one sided) to lovers trope was chef’s kiss. In my eyes, the love was so sweet and wholesome. Now, it is a 3rd level 🌶️, but you can’t just tell me that their love can’t be wholesome as well. In my eyes, love can be wholesome and intimate/ spicy because of how strong the connection is between two people.
Anyways, love this book! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO READ IT!

This book had me in a complete chokehold from the very start to the end. Even after a few days, I still am in its chokehold.
This book is the perfect blend of Scottish lore mixed with mystery, suspense, and romance - and an insanely good romance at that. The story was beautifully written, and I genuinely felt like I was there at the river, watching everything unfold. The storyline was absolutely new and refreshing, and for once I didn't feel like I was reading another book just with different names. Which reminds me... the names she picked for her main characters ?!?!?!?!??!??! Bea and Brennen!!! I don't know why, but I LOVE these so much.
Bea and Brennen may just be the best characters I have read about in quite a long time. Bea was just...honestly, she was the best girls girl, and she genuinely is just an amazing person. I loved that even though she had been stuck at the river for a very long time, she still continued to be as good of a person as she could possibly be. She was also just an absolute badass, and I love her for that.
Brennen was the perfect balance of manly, protective, and agonizing. He had such a huge emotional depth, and I quite loved seeing him slowly change.
One of the things I loved the most about this novel was how gothic it really is. Nature/eco gothic may be my new favorite type of subgenre?, and it's all because of Megan. The mysteries at play, the absolute plot twists, and the gothic vibes just made this book perfection.

Wow! Just wow! I'm stunned, shocked and gasping after finishing this book. I was spiralling and theorizing, all of my favourite things when reading a book. And when everything came together in the end and with things I never imagined would happen, my mouth was literally on the floor!
First of all a thank you to the author for bringing my attention to a legendary tale I had not heard of before. And thanks to this book I will never forget it either.
Bea is our fmc, cursed to be the Washwoman or bean-nighe. The legend surrounding her paints her as a murderer, a monster, a cunning liar. We as readers get to know her as a caring, strong and empathetic person. But which is the truth?
Brennen is the mmc, grumpy Scot, loyal and with a strong sense of justice. The way he slowly unearths the truth about the Washwoman was perfection. I loved how Bea would push his buttons right from the start, and that made for some amazing tension and banter between them.
There are some side characters who really stood out to me as well. The Cutter gets straight under your skin from the first time she enters the page. Totally delicious in her viciousness. And Theo is completely on the opposite end of the spectrum, he warms my heart.
This book made me giggle because of the knife-edge tension, made my cry because of the heartbreaking moments and made me gasp because of the unexpected revelations. Safe to say I am desperate for the next book.

You will always find me whenever Scotland is involved. This just delivered. The folklore, the gaelic intertwined was an absoloute favourite.
The book centres around Bea, The washwoman cursed to wash the clothes of the dead, to send them to the After. I loved her, the haunting tale of what she has suffered and endured, yet still an incredibly humble and kind soul with some whitty banter. You can't not feel for her.
To then intertwine Brennen, the guardian/soldier that has taken a vow to watch over her. The broody grumpy man who is morally right and led by his need for revenge. An absoloute golden retriever but would jump into death and kill in the end for her and I would seat myself for him 🙌🏻
The world building, and pacing of this book was perfect and exactly what I needed. It wasnt overwhelming with all the information but with enough mystery and tension you just had no choice but to turn the pages. Thank you Megan for the glossary. 🤌🏻

Now I had some theories and I am still reeling with the ending with so many questions!!! It came together so seamlessly, and with how different this book is to anything I have read has made it a great one to add to your tbr if you want to be lost in a haunting, mysterious and tension filled story set in scotland with a man in a kilt who calls her swoonworthy nicknames you will melt into a puddle for. My heart is full and my mind is ready for the next book.
