“…it takes integrity to separate justice from cruelty.”
This story pulled me in immediately with the premise, the gothic vibes, and the beautiful cover. There shall be no questions on the importance of aesthetics in my book choices. Due to the way the plot progresses, adding anything to my pre-read (below) in my opinion would spoil too much, so I’ll just dive into my thoughts.
Bea, the Washwoman: she is somewhat an enigma in the romantasy world. While she is not filled with feminine rage or anger, neither is she a damsel in distress or a woman whose convictions are easily swayed. There are times when it’s easy to think that she is a believer in her own punishment, but as the story progresses it is clear that her actions stem from a sense of empathy it’s difficult to imagine a murderer possessing.
Brennen the soldier: a man who subscribes to the theory that justice is black and white. His belief in Bea’s monstrous reputation and the murder of his former betrothed has him signing up for guard duty with a side of assassination faster than you can say “tha mi ’gad mhallachadh” (Scottish for “I curse you”). Thank goodness there’s a glossary in the back for all the pronunciations. But Bea challenges every preconceived notion he’s ever harbored.
And that’s one of the aspects I really enjoyed about this story. It takes a look at prejudice from different sides. One side shows the repugnant cruelty that some will justify based on nothing more than hearsay or reputation. The other asks what it actually means to be a bad person, and what do people who do bad things actually deserve? Is redemption possible and can the present ever atone for the past?
This story may be slow for some, since there isn’t a lot of action until the end. But I was completely hooked. Watching Brennan slowly start to question his own beliefs as he got to know Bea, trying to figure out the mystery behind her murderous history, as well as the mystery behind women who are disappearing all over the kingdom had me clutching my kindle like I was on trial. The pacing between the suspense and the character development kept the momentum at peak levels for me.
And once these two started to trust each other? Let’s just say a gruff Scottish man in a kilt and the forbidden touch trope is an approved recipe.
I’ll also say that while the final revelations in the end are not easily guessed, there are plenty of clues sprinkled through the story. There are quite a few bombshells that pushed this story into more traditional romantasy territory at end, but I’m not mad about it. I’m reserving my final thoughts until I see where the next book takes us. Which I’ll be ordering as soon as it’s announced.

Okay I *thoroughly* enjoyed this. 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ & very excited for more of this story!
PLOT
As punishment for intervening with the fates, Bea is cursed to be the Washwoman. Forced to cleanse the soul/clothes of every person who perishes, unable to leave the river she is chained to after she broke free years back & went on a murder spree. One day he shows up, a seemingly good man with hate in his heart for her. Because turns out that murder spree? Involved his fiance. & he’s been assigned by his queen to kill her.

PROS
- This is a really tender story, that’s sort of the only way I can describe it. It’s mostly a character journey setting up for some seemingly big action to come. It’s not fast, it’s not action-packed, but it also never left me needing more action. The ongoing mystery of *what* actually happened kept me so interested. & coupled with the development of our MCs, I couldn’t put this down. Clearly. I finished it in a day.
- The *thing* literally shot me up in bed. I did NOT see that coming in the absolute best way. I’m thrilled at where that will take the story.
- The emotional turmoil experienced by our leads was just, ugh. My heart. I wanted to hug both of them so much.
- Bea made me both feel so sad for her & also giggle. Her interactions with Brennen were so entertaining to me & all I want for her is peace. But then the more you peel back her layers & learn what she’s been through the more I just adored her. She felt really dynamic & I cannot wait for more of her.
- Brennen struggled so much & you saw the emotional battle so clearly. What a man. Ugh. He was also really hard not to root for even when he’s diametrically opposed to our girl.
- For a story that’s pretty centrally located to one spot I’m impressed by how engaging it remained.
- I love Theo. I hope we continue to get more of him. Same with Garrick.
CONS
- Sometimes the lore got a little away from me. I don’t struggle with this typically but I’d be like “wait what are we referring to? What is this again? Who is this person?” & I’m def not blaming the Gaelic (because so much other fantasy naming/etc. is made up so it’s not like the language source is the issue). We’d get there, but it would kinda take me out for the moment. So just noting it as a minor con because it did pull me from the story sometimes.
THOROUGHLY enjoyed this. 🙌🏼

я закохалася в цю історію перш за все через атмосферу. її готова оцінити хоч на мільйон зірок. така похмура, тягуча, жорстока, просякнута постійним туманним дощем. прямо як і столітнє життя беа біля річки, яку прокляли вічно прати одяг померлих, змивати їхні гріхи та проводжати душі в потойбіччя 🌫🌊
особливо коли сама читаєш це під безперервний дощ за вікном уже другий день - занурення виходить просто стовідсоткове 🙂↔️
плюс книга чіпляє з перших сторінок. хоча сама історія досить камерна (більшість подій з очевидних причин розгортається біля річки та в сусідніх селах), але лор виявився набагато масштабнішим. і мені прям подобається, коли світобудову розкривають крихтами інформації по ходу сюжету, аби під фінал із парою твістів усі таємниці нарешті розкрилися та склалися як пазл у цілісну картину 🔥
за сюжетом тут вам: прокляття, богиня смерті, три долі (мойри) в ролі королев, зникнення жінок і дрібка детективної складової, праля, яку не можна вбити, та історія її ув'язнення біля річки, видіння, моторошні душі від яких мурашки по шкірі, навала монстрів й різноманітні дари (руни), які слугують людям за магію. стільки усього намішано. і усе це щедро приправлено загадками, які авторка постійно підкидає, через що мозок сам будує мільйон теорій 🫨
добре, що мені було з ким обговорити ці теорії в процесі читання, ще більше підживлюючи свій інтерес 😎🍿
серед головних героїв в нас:
🌾 беа - те саме «чудовисько», оповите купою жахливих легенд, яке кілька років тому втекло від річки та повбивало людей у поселенні. вона сама в цьому зізнається й нічого не заперечує 🌚
але насправді.. моє ж ти сонечко, у мене серденько розривалося, коли читала про всі ті способи, якими люди намагалися її вбити протягом довгих років 🤧 а вона все одно залишилася тим теплим, захисним промінчиком, яким була від початку.
🪨 бреннен - ну просто 10 кілтів з 10 🤤
допитливий і справедливий вартовий вищого рангу, який понад усе жадає помсти за кохану, через що й зв'язує себе з богинею смерті непорушною клятвою - знайти чудовисько та вбити. якби усе було так просто..
і як же приємно було спостерігати за цією зміною по відношенню до беа: від ненависті, гарчання й холодності до моменту, коли ця бравада перетворилася на «погибель моя», «серце моє», «душа моя» 🫠🫠
вийшов прям смачнющий слоу бьорн, увінчаний гарячою пристрастю і чоловіком, який вміє поклонятися 😮💨🥵🤌
з незначних мінусів: зняла пів бала за стиль оповіді.
➛ із самого початку було занадто багато натяків на походження беа, і під кінець, хоч і під трохи іншим кутом, вони все ж справдилися. ну хто так будує інтригу 😅 хоча віддам належне: фінал приховує не один сюжетний поворот, тож чимось книжка точно здивує 🙌
➛ і другий момент - постійні повтори. ми вже побачили флешбек/видіння з розгадкою таємниці, але ні: давайте ще раз підсумуємо і перекажемо це іншому персонажу, щоб читач точно збагнув. і так майже з кожним відкриттям. наче розжовують, як маленькій дитині, і в ротик кладуть 🌚
але то все дрібниці, бо історія варта уваги на всі 💯
загалом книжку можна спокійно читати й не чекати на продовження. так, глобальний сюжет ще розвиватиметься далі, але багатенько основних арок цієї частини позакривали. та й у наступній книзі фокус повинен зміститися на іншу пару. гадаю, в серії всього буде 3 пари. богиня міре добряче постаралася в останній момент 🤭🥰

Wow. Just wow. This will be a short review because this book stole all my words. This book deserves every single bit of praise it is getting. I was lost in this world and didn’t want to come out of it.
The magic system is based in the Fates along with Scottish and Gaelic mythology. It was beautiful, haunting, and it refuses to leave my head. I was so wrapped up in the story of Bea, the Washwoman, forced to clean the clothes of souls newly (and nearly) departed so they can travel to the afterlife. She’s chained to the river to atone for her sins. Bea is a murderer. Trapped for over a hundred years, forced to clean her soul along with the clothes, she’s trapped for eternity.
Until Brennan. The tension with Brennan, who was sent to guard her after women go missing never to be seen again, is delicious.
A green flag MMC, he shows her humanity she hasn’t seen in a century. When the mystery deepens on the missing girls, the lore of the Washerwoman, and the real reason he’s been sent to guard her, you can’t help but be wrapped up in this luscious story.
I may have also, rather stupidly, thought this was a standalone. It is not. It has a cliffhanger ending and Megan Shade, I have words for you. That was MEAN. It was worth it but it was MEAN.
Six well deserved strings for this one. (IYKYK.)

There are no words. NO WORDS TO REVIEW PERFECTION! This book will make you wonder if you’ve been too generous with your 5 star reviews. Do whatever you have to do to get your hands on this book. I’ve read over 200 books this year and this is my absolute favorite. I’m dead after reading this. Just gone. Almost 600 pages in one sitting, downed, gone, ravished, and consumed without mercy, and I’m just going to have to sit here with my feelings until her next piece of perfection graces my shelf.
Brennan and Bea are everything. The slow culminating devotion, the tension, the resistance, the guilt, the longing, the protecting, the risking - all of it was just the best romance writing you can read. I’m not allowed to pull quotes ohhhhh but I would and you would be on your knees for these two. Nothing forced, everything was so natural and the dialogue felt so alive and real. The action was incredibly vivid and had you quite literally furiously turning pages. Not to mention creepy. Like the shivers will take you by surprise. So exceptionally well timed and the word choice used just sends you there. BUT THE STORY WAS THE CENTERPIECE. The romance didn’t need to drive it forward (despite how absolutely pure and perfect it was) there was a whole world of characters and history backing this entire setting. The folklore tied into this is genius, and absolutely fascinating. Brilliant ideas that are full fledged out, no gaps other than the mystery that needs to be revealed. So much of the story takes place where Bea is trapped and yet, that area I could practically paint a picture for you, it was so alive by the time I was done. The author has no mercy for your heart though! Brace yourself. I cried. Haven’t cried from a book in a LONG time. But I cried. The tortured souls are just going to eat you away. BEST BOOK OF 2026. Brennan and Bea are everything. The slow culminating devotion, the tension, the resistance, the guilt, the longing, the protecting, the risking - all of it was just the best romance writing you can read. I’m not allowed to pull quotes ohhhhh but I would and you would be on your knees for these two. Nothing forced, everything was so natural and the dialogue felt so alive and real. The action was incredibly vivid and had you quite literally furiously turning pages. Not to mention creepy. Like the shivers will take you by surprise. So exceptionally well timed and the word choice used just sends you there. BUT THE STORY WAS THE CENTERPIECE. The romance didn’t need to drive it forward (despite how absolutely pure and perfect it was) there was a whole world of characters and history backing this entire setting. The folklore tied into this is genius, and absolutely fascinating. Brilliant ideas that are full fledged out, no gaps other than the mystery that needs to be revealed. So much of the story takes place where Bea is trapped and yet, that area I could practically paint a picture for you, it was so alive by the time I was done. The author has no mercy for your heart though! Brace yourself. I cried. Haven’t cried from a book in a LONG time. But I cried. The tortured souls are just going to eat you away. BEST BOOK OF 2026. I really gave it my best shot, but this book is impossibly slow. On page 365 we’re still in a river bend with nothing having happened. The Scottish slang everyone but the FMC are speaking with is really throwing me off as well, the difference is so jarring between the narration and the dialogues.
What is not for me might be for someone else, as I’ve seen mostly praise for this one. Sadly not my cup of tea!

This book was truly a breath of fresh air in the romantasy genre. I was hooked from page one with its unique premise, steady pacing and mystery, and likable but nuanced characters.
Bea, is the Washwoman who is being punished for a horrible crime. She has to wash the clothes of the dead and send the clothes down the river into the afterlife to give the souls peace as an act of penance. Without spoiling, the circumstance in which Bea and the MMC (Brennan) meet was as heartbreaking as it was hopeful. Bea with her unbreakable spirit and Brennan with his firm sense of justice and honor fill the book with tension and yearning that I have been craving from a romantasy book.
The author showed such an empathetic, soft, kind, yet unbelievably brave character in Bea, that I found myself needing an almost constant reminder of why she’s even being punished. Brennan’s complicated feelings between what he witnesses firsthand with Bea & knows in his heart vs. what he’s been conditioned to believe creates such a complicated but believable relationship between the two main characters.
The love is gentle and gradual with the author taking time for the couple to get to know another other. What starts as a “hate to love” situation eventually turns into a beautiful romance about seeing people as they truly are.
The ending was filled with a few surprises that I’m still processing. Some I could predict but a few I did not see coming at all but sets up a solid start to the next book.

A broody Scottish soldier versus the wash woman with an unbreakable spirit…
First of all, I had never heard of the wash woman before this book. What a unique idea to build this amazing story around.
Where to begin?
The world building is paced perfectly to my taste of enough but not feeling overwhelming. The Author also provided a glossary to understand the Gaelic language used & a map to immerse yourself in this book! So much care was put into making sure that every reader could enjoy it.
Bea is such a well written character that it makes it hard not to love her. Despite what she has done, her heart is on every page and you can’t help but root for her.
Brennen was so different. He isn’t like every other MMC. His moral compass leads him. Although it can make him hard headed & broody, it also makes for a character whose actions are just & true to his word. You understand his need for revenge, even if you don’t like it.

This book was such a treat. What a unique and captivating storyline. There were so many things I absolutely adored about it. The tension. The yearning. The slow burn. Top tier. The grumpy x sunshine? Absolutely perfect. I could honestly go on and on because this book had all my favorite tropes!!
And Brennen? I’ll happily be Brennen’s good little lass any day. We LOVE a man who simply cannot help how he feels. The romance and plot are absolutely neck & neck in this! Which…. Seriously what more can you ask from a romantasy?!!
I will say I struggled a bit with the first half, which is why this lands at 4.5⭐ for me instead of 5. I wasn’t completely invested until about the midway point. Whether that was because it’s been such a busy summer or just the pacing of the story, I’m not totally sure. Just keeping it honest!
But trust me when I say the payoff is so worth it. The twists completely caught me off guard, and I was so impressed by where this story went. It has all the atmospheric vibes that make it the perfect fall read, and I have no doubt people are going to be obsessed when it’s released.
Now excuse me while I impatiently wait for book two… Megan. 👀

Her innate strength is admirable but what really endeared me to her was the fact that despite the curse on her, despite being forced to do such a task, she washes the clothes with care and kindness. She does the best job she can to ensure people’s souls will safely pass. The first few times she did it brought a tear to my eye and then we got to know her more. What a woman Bea is. Kindness just exudes from her and the way she cares for others above herself could be considered foolish, yet for her it makes complete sense. I’m very excited to see where things will lead for Bea!
It took me a while to warm up to Brennen. I could understand that his loss made him seek vengeance, that he wanted to protect people - especially after he couldn’t protect someone precious to him. But when we see that harsh exterior start to soften, I found myself more engaged with him and his interesting thought process. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he’s a rugged Scottish man with what is almost certainly a highly delightful accent… He goes on quite the journey here and where he ends up was not something I anticipated at all! His further character development is something I am incredibly invested in (and not just because he’s protective, wears a kilt and could make panties drop with his voice… Nope, not at all…)
I was introduced to this author through her release of Poetry by Dead Men, which is worlds away from this story. I adored it so when the opportunity to read her newest novel came around, I jumped at it instantly. As someone who loves folklore interwoven into fantasy stories, this was absolute perfection for me. Add in that it’s full of hunky Scottish men.. well, what’s not to like? The plot flows like the river it’s centred around and is deeply rooted in emotion that just held me captivated from the first chapter. I adored how intwined the Scottish folklore is into everything we read because it helped bring everything alive. The characters did that too, fleshing out the story and making it something visceral and engaging. We see so many different personalities, be it only for a flash or for some time, and they all contributed in some way which is the best. In fantasy especially, some characters can be there just for the sake of it. But everyone here had a purpose which just makes a book better in my eyes. Romance wise, we are treated to quite the spectacle. The yearning and the angst, the softly spoken words dulling the edges of sharp actions, the attraction and the frustration, it was all so cleverly crafted. Shade has a magical ability to make a romance feel like it is the entire world, that anything other than the height of passion and emotion is dull and unimportant. This story can thrive without romance, I am entirely confident in that, but with it? It practically leaps from the page and consumed me whole! The ending though… That had my jaw on the floor. I didn’t have a single inkling until the last few chapters and then BOOM, it hit all at once. I am now DESPERATE for the next book because that cliffhanger at the end was both cruel and amazing!
Overall, The Washwoman at the River’s End is a stunning story that has left me desperate for more.

What a breath of fresh air this book was! It felt completely different from anything else I've read in the this genre. The combination of a beautifully executed slow-burn, one-sided enemies-to-lovers romance, incredible writing, and a magic system rooted in Scottish folklore made this such a refreshing read. The MC’s were kind, caring, compassionate, and mature, also refreshing! Did this book still include some of our favorite tropes? Absolutely. The weaving of those familiar tropes into such a unique world made the story feel exciting, intriguing, and completely captivating. This is definitely one of my favorite reads this year.
The writing was phenomenal. It was descriptive without becoming overly flowery, emotionally rich without feeling heavy, and perfectly balanced. Megan showed rather than told, allowing me to experience every emotion alongside the characters. I could vividly picture every scene, felt completely immersed in the world, and constantly wanted to keep reading.
I was hooked almost immediately. The story opens with the MFC already being punished for committing an unforgivable crime. Her sentence was to become the Washwoman. I had never heard of the Washwoman before reading this book, and learning about that piece of Scottish folklore was fascinating. It added another layer of uniqueness to an already incredibly original story.
The pacing started out slow to moderate, giving the author plenty of time to develop the world, magic system, characters, and mysteries. Then, around the last 20%, everything accelerated. I genuinely couldn't stop reading and ended up finishing it in one sitting. The antagonist was someone I absolutely loved to hate, and Megan wasn't afraid to kill off a character or two, which kept the stakes feeling very real.
Mystery was woven into every aspect of the story. The biggest question throughout was what the MFC had actually done to deserve such a horrific punishment and what had really happened when she escaped. Instead of revealing everything through one massive information dump, Megan slowly sprinkled clues throughout the book, allowing me to form theories while still keeping me guessing until the very end.
Beyond the central storyline of the MMC being sent to end the MFC's life while she searched for the five items needed to break her curse, there were so many fascinating threads woven throughout the novel. The disappearing women, one fate and her games, the MFC's unusual visions, and the approaching Epoch all seemed separate at first. Watching every storyline gradually converge into one cohesive, satisfying conclusion was rewarding.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was how much empathy Megan created for both main characters. The MFC had clearly done something horrific, yet I never found myself hating her. Instead, Megan carefully showed the devastating consequences of her punishment and the immense emotional toll it had taken. Through her experiences, we witnessed suicidal ideation, self-harm, emotional devastation, numbness, fear, and overwhelming guilt. Early on, it was suggested that she had suffered a psychotic break when the murders occurred, and I immediately suspected there was far more to the story than simply a "broken mind." Rather than presenting her as either good or evil, Megan created an incredibly nuanced character who had endured something unimaginable and had been paying for it ever since. When the truth was finally revealed, the payoff was worth the wait.
Another aspect of the MFC I LOVED and was again a breath of fresh air was who the MFC was and how she coped with trauma. She was so kind and kept to her values, no matter what happened to her. She wasn’t bitter or mean, she stayed kind, empathetic, caring, and compassionate. In a genre of angry, sassy, stabby, crabby, avoidant, and lashing out MFC’s, this kind, warm, compassionate MFC was amazing. Now, don’t get me wrong, being scared and angry after trauma is realistic, but that is only one way of coping post trauma; yet, seems to be the only one represented lately in this genre. It is so redundant and lacks diversity. I loved that Megan represented another way of coping!
I also found myself deeply invested in the MMC. From the very beginning, we saw the profound grief he carried after losing the love of his life. Again, Megan never simply told us he was hurting, she made us feel it. He began the story with a very rigid sense of morality, viewing everything as black and white. As the story progressed, watching that worldview slowly evolve while he still remained true to his core values was one of my favorite examples of character growth in the book. And YES, he totally reminded me of Jamie Fraser 😘
The romance was exactly what I want from a slow burn. This was truly a one-sided enemies-to-lovers relationship, and every step of their emotional journey felt earned. There were no sudden shifts or unbelievable changes in feelings. Instead, we watched the MMC slowly question his beliefs while both characters gradually developed trust, respect, and eventually love. After reading several romances recently where the relationship progression felt rushed, this one was such a welcome change. Every emotional beat felt authentic, and I believed every moment of their relationship.
Also, I absolutely love a strong bond and deep loyalty between couples that are good fit for each other. I loved, I mean loved, the loyalty by the MMC to the MFC at the end. Of note, the MFC was always loyal to the MMC. Therefore, I absolutely adored her and how much she stood by him. That was exactly what I wanted!
The spice was perfect! The first moments where they wanted to be intimate, but couldn’t touch skin to skin was such a fantastic part of the story. There was so much tension and heat in that moment. Eventually, much later, when they figured out how they could touch, it was such a beautiful scene.
Then there was that ending...WOW. I guessed one very small piece of what was coming, but everything else completely shocked me. I'm usually not someone who predicts endings very well, so readers who enjoy theorizing may catch a few more hints than I did. Even so, I genuinely don't think most people will see the full picture before everything is revealed. It was shocking, emotional, satisfying, and left me wanting book two ASAP.
And one completely random note: there was one scene that gave me serious The Ring vibes. The one where the girl crawls out of the TV. It was spooky and creepy!

Rather than presenting her as either good or evil, Megan created an incredibly nuanced character who had endured something unimaginable and had been paying for it ever since. When the truth was finally revealed, the payoff was worth the wait.
Another aspect of the MFC I LOVED and was again a breath of fresh air was who the MFC was and how she coped with trauma. She was so kind and kept to her values, no matter what happened to her. She wasn’t bitter or mean, she stayed kind, empathetic, caring, and compassionate. In a genre of angry, sassy, stabby, crabby, avoidant, and lashing out MFC’s, this kind, warm, compassionate MFC was amazing. Now, don’t get me wrong, being scared and angry after trauma is realistic, but that is only one way of coping post trauma; yet, seems to be the only one represented lately in this genre. It is so redundant and lacks diversity. I loved that Megan represented another way of coping!
I also found myself deeply invested in the MMC. From the very beginning, we saw the profound grief he carried after losing the love of his life. Again, Megan never simply told us he was hurting, she made us feel it. He began the story with a very rigid sense of morality, viewing everything as black and white. As the story progressed, watching that worldview slowly evolve while he still remained true to his core values was one of my favorite examples of character growth in the book. And YES, he totally reminded me of Jamie Fraser 😘
The romance was exactly what I want from a slow burn. This was truly a one-sided enemies-to-lovers relationship, and every step of their emotional journey felt earned. There were no sudden shifts or unbelievable changes in feelings. Instead, we watched the MMC slowly question his beliefs while both characters gradually developed trust, respect, and eventually love. After reading several romances recently where the relationship progression felt rushed, this one was such a welcome change. Every emotional beat felt authentic, and I believed every moment of their relationship.
Also, I absolutely love a strong bond and deep loyalty between couples that are good fit for each other. I loved, I mean loved, the loyalty by the MMC to the MFC at the end. Of note, the MFC was always loyal to the MMC. Therefore, I absolutely adored her and how much she stood by him. That was exactly what I wanted!
The spice was perfect! The first moments where they wanted to be intimate, but couldn’t touch skin to skin was such a fantastic part of the story. There was so much tension and heat in that moment. Eventually, much later, when they figured out how they could touch, it was such a beautiful scene.
Then there was that ending...WOW. I guessed one very small piece of what was coming, but everything else completely shocked me. I'm usually not someone who predicts endings very well, so readers who enjoy theorizing may catch a few more hints than I did. Even so, I genuinely don't think most people will see the full picture before everything is revealed. It was shocking, emotional, satisfying, and left me wanting book two ASAP.
And one completely random note: there was one scene that gave me serious The Ring vibes. The one where the girl crawls out of the TV. It was spooky and creepy!
I definitely will be buying a copy of this book to add to my bookshelf!

I’m a bit conflicted on this book. While it wasn’t bad, I feel like it was drawn out and unnecessarily long. I also didn’t feel any chemistry from the love interests, but knew based on the plot that was where it was going. However, I loved the setting and the magic system and longed for more about that. I might continue the series, but I’m bummed that this wasn’t as good as everyone was making it out to be.

Devoured this in a single sitting. I get the hype. It’s gothic and a little creepy and kinda depressing and also deeply compelling.
The Scottish lore here feels so, so rich and unique for romantasy. With it, Shade creates a world that feels just big enough and gods and goddesses and fates that pull and cut and weave strings in a way that works so well.
Bea is haunted and broken and still plucky and kind and tenacious. With Brennen, we get a grumpy, possessive, protector MMC who deeply, truly hates her—until he just hates how much he doesn’t hate her.
The tension worked quite well, with the perfect literal boundaries of Bea’s range driving forced proximity and only one bed and a host of delicious tropes.

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book and I cannot express how much I love it. The story is so well written, it hooked me from the first chapter and just kept pulling me back in. I am so excited for this series! Megan absolutely killed it… with the banter, the slow burn, and the close proximity… I mean, who doesn’t love a broody Scottish soldier?! Brennan may just be my new favorite book boyfriend!

Okay I had super high expectations for this one. I see rave reviews and the concept of it was very cool. But wow this one was a letdown. Started out great, I was invested. Then just hit such a slowwww lull of nothing. To then have these two characters be "the" ones for eachother. Like what. I didnt believe it at all. Even with the slow. He hated her so much and truly was mean to her in the beginning. It just made him look bad and her say it was okay. The ending I will say was more fascinating. But this story could have been 200 plus pages shorter. I wont be moving on in this series unfortunately. So bummed cause I just was so excited for this one. Also whyyyy do all characters speak Gaelic minus Bea. Im still lost on that one.... Sometimes the Gaelic just felt half hazordly thrown in for me too. And sadly this one had some spelling errors that made my eyes twitch. Overall my verdict was this one wasn't for me. But very cool concept just wasn't done in a way that worked.

I finished this book in two days because I could not stop reading. This is a gorgeous 6 star read about life and death and sadness and hope. It's a dark romantic folklore that keeps you engaged and guessing until the very end.
Bea is chained to the river where she is forced to wash the clothes of those who have died as a punishment for her own actions. And you absolutely feel her isolation and sadness. It's palpable throughout the book and I constantly wondered if she was the monster that the town thought she was or if she was good and misunderstood.
And then Brennen enters the story and struggles with exactly that dilemma. The right and the wrong and his feelings in between. Is Bea someone who deserves punishment or is she something different and good?
This book centers on the two of these characters for the entire book and you feel connected to them throughout it all. And lonely with them in the best of ways. This book is complicated and beautiful with a slow burn romance and a gorgeous world in the woods and by the river. The themes of when it's time to die and what happens when lives end are throughout this book and part of the folklore.

5⭐️ Some books make you question your own definition of what a "good book" means to you. This is one of those books.
I went into it knowing all the hype and thinking it was likely going to be a good book. I did not think it was going to astound me the way that it did. This book is fantastic.
Every theory I came up with that I thought had substance was completely turned on its head by the end of this book. I felt like I did at the end of other books that took me by surprise in the last twisty chapters - Onyx Storm, Child of Shivay, Metal Slinger, One Dark Window - and I immediately felt like I needed to do a reread to better understand how I missed all the clues leading up to that point.
The Washwoman at the River's End is so unique, it's almost hard to put the significance of the story into words. It's such a clever, careful blend of aspects from the true washerwoman folklore with the fiction of this story.
There were scenes that terrified me (i.e. the ghosts haunting the river), and scenes that filled me with dread, shock or sorrow. There's an underlying theme of grief and healing that made me pause and ponder life and death.
Bea, the main female character and washwoman who is physically chained to the river, has experienced a shocking level of discrimination, abuse and violence for over a century at the hands of people who both fear and/or are fascinated by who she is and what she represents. Despite this, she has maintained her own compassion and humanity. Her story is a true testament to how history handed down from one generation to the next can become so warped that people can no longer tell fact from fiction, separate humans from myth and monsters.
Brennen, the main male character and guard, might be one of the most ethical, moral and loyal characters I've ever encountered in a book. His loyalty to his duty and need to always abide by the rules frustrated me greatly throughout, but eventually made SO much sense.
You don't quite realize just how much careful focus and planning on the author's part had to go into the development of these two characters, Bea and Brennen, until you get to the end of this story and fully understand what you have.
The coming Epoch of monsters, the dragons, the Faerie Pools, the unusual body runes and clever magic, the concept of the Fates - there are SO many elements to this book that were so deeply fascinating! It's not an action-packed story, but it doesn't need to be; I couldn't stop turning pages trying to figure out the truth to this tale.
And the yearning between Bea and Brennen? Every time Brennen grumbled "Good lass," I melted. 🫠 😍 I honestly couldn't work out how this was going to move from hate to love on the part of the MMC because his feelings were so justified. But how this part of the story was handled felt so natural and earned.
This book is everything it claims to be. It's spooky, complex, grounded in folklore, atmospheric and intriguing. With an ending like that, this story will be one that sticks with me right up until I can finally satisfy my curiosity with book two.
If you like dark gothic tales that are equal parts terrifying and fascinating, that challenge you to think outside the box, that blend history with fantasy, and have a forbidden love that feels both impossible and all-consuming, you're going to enjoy this unusual book.

Beautiful. Captivating. Imaginative.
This story was utterly spellbinding. I was completely swept away by the unique mythology and lore, which had such strong Scottish/Celtic influences. In a genre that is overflowing with Greek and Roman mythology, this felt like such a refreshing and exciting change. The author even incorporates phonetic spellings of certain words, which added another layer of immersion. It gave me very Diana Gabaldon Outlander vibes with the “dinnae ken” and Gaelic-inspired word choices, and I absolutely loved it.
This story is beautiful and tragic, exploring loss, grief, anger, and the many wounds people carry throughout their lives. It isn’t an emotional rollercoaster in the traditional sense, but wow… I felt things. The emotional depth sneaks up on you, and when it hits, it hits.
And the romance! WOW. This is absolutely a fantasy novel with romance, and I would describe it as a true slow burn with very mild spice. The yearning… oh sweet baby Jesus. The tension, the longing, the stolen moments—Brennen had my toes curling, had me giggling like a schoolgirl, and there were definitely moments where I was biting my lip and fanning myself. Absolutely scrumptious.
The ending! Y’all… I did not fully see it coming. I came REALLY close on one aspect, but Megan absolutely got me—and that does not happen often! The cliffhanger was perfection. It wrapped up the main storyline while beautifully setting the stage for book two. I also confirmed with the author that this will be a trilogy, with even more of this incredible world and mythology to be explored in future books, and I am already excited.
The pacing was fantastic. There was never a moment where I thought, “Okay, get to the point,” or felt like the story was dragging. Between the emotional moments, action sequences, and scenes that were genuinely intense, I was completely engrossed from the very first page.
Now, the characters…
FINALLY. A strong and resilient FMC who is still kind, compassionate, and soft. Bea has endured truly horrific things, but those experiences don’t erase who she is at her core. She is loving, feminine, and deeply human. I adored that strength wasn’t defined by hardness.
And Brennen… excuse me while I add another book boyfriend to the list. He is easily in my top five. I genuinely want my own Brennen. He’s a fierce warrior with strong morals, a little morally gray when the situation calls for it, but ultimately guided by a deep desire to do what is right.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best books I’ve read all year. The writing is gorgeous—not quite lyrical, but immersive in every way that matters. The world, the characters, the mythology, the romance, and the emotions all pulled me in completely.

Absolutely scrumptious.
The ending! Y’all… I did not fully see it coming. I came REALLY close on one aspect, but Megan absolutely got me—and that does not happen often! The cliffhanger was perfection. It wrapped up the main storyline while beautifully setting the stage for book two. I also confirmed with the author that this will be a trilogy, with even more of this incredible world and mythology to be explored in future books, and I am already excited.
The pacing was fantastic. There was never a moment where I thought, “Okay, get to the point,” or felt like the story was dragging. Between the emotional moments, action sequences, and scenes that were genuinely intense, I was completely engrossed from the very first page.
Now, the characters…
FINALLY. A strong and resilient FMC who is still kind, compassionate, and soft. Bea has endured truly horrific things, but those experiences don’t erase who she is at her core. She is loving, feminine, and deeply human. I adored that strength wasn’t defined by hardness.
And Brennen… excuse me while I add another book boyfriend to the list. He is easily in my top five. I genuinely want my own Brennen. He’s a fierce warrior with strong morals, a little morally gray when the situation calls for it, but ultimately guided by a deep desire to do what is right.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best books I’ve read all year. The writing is gorgeous—not quite lyrical, but immersive in every way that matters. The world, the characters, the mythology, the romance, and the emotions all pulled me in completely.

I read one paragraph about this book and got instant goosebumps. “For over a century, mothers have warned their children of the Washwoman at the River’s End—a woman cursed to wash the graveclothes of the dying so their souls may cross into the After. They say she is wicked. A murderess. But legends rarely tell the whole truth”.
I took my time reading this one, I got an early copy on my kindle from the @thenerdfam (thank you!!) and knew I was going to love it after a few pages so ordered a physical copy. The way Megan wrote this setting?! So good, so haunting, yet so beautiful. The Scottish folklore was fascinating, and Brennen the MMC was just a broody and cranky as I needed him to be! I loved this story, and the ending and epilogue have me eagerly awaiting the next book!
If you love a true enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, and like gothic atmospheric stories, please read this beautiful book.

I am honestly at a loss for words because The Washwoman at the River’s End is easily one of my favorite reads of 2026. Megan Shade has a way of writing stories that completely pull you in — the kind that make you laugh, hurt, and sob all within the same pages.
The banter between Bea and Brennen was EVERYTHING. This was truly an enemies-to-lovers romance, and it was delicious. The tension, the slow shift from hatred to trust, and the way their love story unfolded had me completely invested. I wanted to read this book again for the first time so that I could experience that ending all over again.
This story is so much more than a swoony romance. It’s a beautiful story about love, sacrifice, grief, and finding hope when it feels impossible.
This is a book you absolutely do not want to skip! Read it for the enemies-to-lovers perfection, stay for the stunning storytelling, and prepare yourself for an unforgettable love story.

This book is so well written and whimsical. It’s also dark and hauntingly beautiful. The first half of the book was a little slow but the back half definitely picked up.
The relationship between our MCs was so good. I loved reading how they slowly grew closer and closer. Lots of emotional depth with these characters.
Really enjoyed the twists and turns throughout the book. I was not expecting the ending and I can’t wait for the second book!

I went into The Washwoman at the River’s End expecting a good gothic romantasy and somehow came out emotionally ATTACHED. The atmosphere?? The plot ?? The slow burn?? The ending ??
Absolutely everything. It had that perfect gothic, mysterious vibe, with curses, magic, folklore and dragons woven into the story.
Bea?? I loved her. She’s complicated, misunderstood, and exactly the kind of FMC I want to read about.
And chapter 76 ???!! I did NOT see that coming !!!! 😱😱😱😱😱 I was screaming !!! No way !!! I won’t spoil for anyone . Yall have to witness those moments yourself through the 75 chapters of absolute amazingness!!
Basically: gothic vibes + absolutely amazing plot + ACTUALLY enemies to lovers + forced proximity + slow burn + yearning + “touch her and die” energy = I’m obsessed

What a freaking ride this book was.
The concept of the story alone sucks you in. A woman cursed to wash the dead’s clothing for all eternity and a man headstrong on killing her to avenge his fiancé… come on, that all by itself is intriguing. Then you add the beautiful highlands, a warrior who says “Good Lass”, and the constant battle of morality through the book and you just have a hands down amazing read. I cannot wait to see what is in store for us in the next book!

As a Scottish descended girlie who adores historical fiction, folklore, romantasy, and gothic fantasy this was an absolute win! Enemies to lovers with the most satisfying slow burn payoff! The crazy plot twists have me dumbfounded and eager for the next book to come out!!
