Where there's smoke...you will find the Devil's Fire.
Rue Volley lives in the Midwest in an old Victorian house with her husband and a spoiled Pug, crafting the most frustrating plot twists to make you want to toss your Kindle. She loves curling up with a good whodunit on rainy days and collecting book trophies. Rue is a dedicated mood reader and doesn’t mind taking afternoon naps. You can often find her in the library or supporting small bookstores with the money you give her for daydreaming on paper.
Where there's smoke...you will find the Devil's Fire.
Abigail is heartbroken.
Jack chose Rose and now she's stuck in limbo.
Jack's hold on Abigail goes soul deep and she feels the only thing she can do is run home. She needs to regroup and find some way to go on without Jack.
Once home she learns more than she ever thought possible. Things aren't always what they seem. The hits just keep coming.
What Abigail thought was reality really isn't and she has to learn to trust not only herself again but those around her as well.
This book hit on every emotion I have. One minute I was laughing and the next I was crying right along with Abigail.
At the end I threw my ereader. Yes another cliffy and its a doozy. Rue Volley knows how to suck the reader in and keep them there. I couldn't put this book down and now I'm impatiently waiting for the next book. I can't wait to see what happens next and how this fabulous (new to me) author is going to dig her way out of that ending.
This is a must read series that I've already started recommending to all my book friends.
All I have in me right now to say is WOW, that’s it that’s all I have……
Now that I have taken a cold shower and have my senses back, I think I can coherently write a review.
Ms. Volley has outshined herself once again and I must start off by applauding her on her work with this book. It’s extremely fast paced from beginning to end. This author has gotten very sneaky in writing this story. There is one scene and I may never really know for sure, but I wasn’t completely sure if the scene was a dream or for real that the character was going through. And that is all I am saying about that. The characters are phenomenally well written and the sex scenes are cold shower or maybe a bucket of ice worthy. I really loved how the author twisted, romance, sex, and a bit of comedy into the story. I could be getting into one scene and POW I am mad at Victoria for ruining it, to laughing at something someone did or said. Of course, Jack is still hawt and fall off the bed sexy in this story as he has been in the previous one. I must say that this author has really progressed and has come a long way in perfecting her writing style and it really shows in this book. I must HIGHLY recommend that you go and purchase this book right NOW, but be sure to read book one, The Devil’s Gate, first so you know what’s going on. With the graphic language and scenes in the story, this is not one for the younger generation. I recommend this book to 18+ year olds. This awesome story gets my vote of five stars and more.
The author provided me with a digital ARC copy of the book for review purposes only. No remuneration was exchanged.
The Devil’s Fire, Book #2 (The Devil’s Gate Trilogy) by Rue Volley Abigail has to get away, the memory of Jack is keeping her tied in knots. What she feels for him and their special relationship haunts her days and haunts her nights. The erotic dreams are almost more than she can bare. Abigail hopes that going home will help her leave Jack behind. Now she is faced with a mother that has changed and become more open and more free to life’s experiences. Abigail finds that there are men that want Abigail now and that she is desired but none of them are like Jack. When Abigail is pushed to the edge an accident that could have cost her life brings Jack back into her life. Now the feelings rush back but what will happen between them. He takes her away on his own private plane and when she sees the name on the plane her mind begins to realize that there are more secrets and that hidden things are coming light. The house Jack takes her to is special to Jack but may be special to others. It holds family secrets of his family and hers. Did he really want the girl he married or Abigail all along? So many more secrets are uncovered, more lies are found out and Abigail is still caught in the web that Jack has built. When faced with her own mother’s truths Abigail has to face her own. You must read this second book in the trilogy to begin to unwind all the webs, all the lies, all the passion that is still a part of what is Abigail and Jack.
Tantalizing, provocative, and witty, Devil’s Fire is one hell of a follow up to The Devils’ Gate. Mr. Volley has a way with words. I laughed, I sympathized, and I stayed up way too late turning pages. *laughs. She will suck you into her world and never let you go. Dark, twisted, and all-consuming the connection between Abi and Jack take her down a spiral that has her friends worried. Hell, I was worried. I don’t want to ruin the read, but it’ll make you think, and ask yourself questions. It’ll remind some of us of that one, maybe they got away, or perhaps we let them go, because they weren’t the best for us, but we still carry around that fire they started deep in our souls and were changed for knowing them. Licking her wounds after the debacle Abi comes home and I believe rediscovers who she is and who she wants to be. She got worked over in the first book. Parts of her came to life, she didn’t’ know existed, an a confident man with wealth and power enchanted her. It threw her off kilter. I think book two is about her taking back her own power and making choices for herself. It makes for an intriguing journey. I’ve seen an insane amount of growth in her writing for this series, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for book three.
I have just finished reading this book less than an hour ago. I was given a copy in return for My honest review. So, while I fear I don't have Rue's way with words, here you are. My heart is still pounding at some of the plot twists. The Devil's Fire is amazing. I'm familiar with having love hate relationships with characters, and the authors that write them, honestly. But this book takes you on such an emotional roller coaster. The characters themselves seem so real, I can absolutly see parts of myself in many of them; I can see parts of people I love too. It makes it so much stronger when you a rooting for almost everyone even when they are at odds. But they blend so well together. rue did an amazing job with the banter and had me cracking up, at many points. While the story is erotic, and has lots of elements of bdsm, it portrays them very well. It is so much more than a smut book. I know bdsm culture well. And while my husband and I have a fairly normal relationship outside the house, the bed restraints only get tucked in, never removed. :) so when I find a book that portrays it so perfectly, I want to shout it's praises. Many will feel that the relationship is emotionally abusive, but I hope they continue to read and see how it develops. Many of the characters are broken people in this book, searching for themselves, and finding the missing pieces in others. Giving pieces of themselves until hopefully everyone is truely whole. Or possibly giving so much of themselves there is nothing left. The way this series has gone, I expect nothing and am simply greatful to receive the pieces of these characters' lives. I truly hope you will pick up these books and find a piece of yourself in them.
Twists, turns and a real surprise ending! Abi and Jack have so much work to do. Abi's mom is a real scream! I love her. Sam is such a hunk! The story definitely brings out the darker side of love and family. Talk about skeletons in a closet. This story was enthralling and managed to surprise me right to the very end. Cliff hanger! I cannot wait for the 3rd one, The Devil's Kiss.
When I open an erotica book, I usually know what to expect. As with most other romantic books, they are grown-up fairy tales, and those always end happy. When I first read The Devil's Gate (review can be found here), you'll see how shocked I was at the way the story played out. When I had the opportunity to read and review The Devil's Fire, I jumped at the chance. I will give one spoiler from the previous book: I had never read an erotica novel where the characters didn't actually have sex! Now, I won't spoil this book now by saying if Abigail does or does not lose her virginity, but I will tell you that her character is so refreshing in this genre. She's a submissive who had no idea she was a sub until she met Jack. Now, she's suffering from a severe case of subdrop, mixed with the typical sense of utter loss after the unthinkable ending of TDG. She tries to set off the sadness with humor and goes home to think. For most of the book, we are in her mind, living her life and being wrapped in her emotions. She is so strong, and so hurt. Abi is a character I can relate to in many ways, from her feelings towards Jack and her sense of self-respect, not just giving herself to a man to have experience. I feel as if I know her, as if she's a friend. You will, too, once you read this. Her mother is a new character in the series, a woman who made an incredible change in her life and wants Abi to do the same. She's funny, outrageous and one of the best supporting characters I have encountered. She's different in every way, and she really makes the book stand out with her presence. All the other characters from TDG make appearances, but I can't say what happens. Trust me, I am dying to, but this is a spoiler-free zone. The sexual scenes here are hot, dark and passionate. Be they dreams or in reality, you really get a vibe unlike any other when you read this. You get inside the head of a submissive, and you really get to understand what is so exhilarating about the BDSM lifestyle. Most BDSM books are very incorrect about nearly every aspect of the lifestyle, but this book hits the nail on the head. I think it's safe to say that this is one of my absolute favorite books. Rue really knows how to write sex, love, hate and longing, amongst all the other emotions running rampant in this story. I could not put it down! Now, I am done with this review. Go read this book, you won't regret it!
I enjoyed the first book more than this one. It starts right where the last left off but kind of drags through Abi's recovery from her heartbreak. She has turned down an awesome job not wanting to have anything to do with Jake or anyone associated with him and is working at a coffee shop. She is depressed and decides to lick her wounds from a distance so she leaves NY to visit with her mother and from there things just dragged for me. Yes, her mother was entertaining and their conversations were funny but it just got boring for me after a while. There is her usual struggle with Max when he comes back home to visit with his family accompanied with his girlfriend as well as her being encouraged by her mom to get out there and date, which she does, but that turns out to be a disaster. Finally, Jake pops back into her life after an accident that lands her in the hospital under the care of a mental health doctor. She accepts his explanation for his absence and why things ended the way they did the last time they saw each other. She did this a little too easy for me. I am losing touch with his character and I really feel like at this point, I need his POV to find some connection. Jake then takes her away to explain everything to her and reveals his true feelings. They have some steamy non-sex and the next day things come crashing down with the usual interruption of his mother and family. He asks Abi to go home and he will contact her once he as all under control, then silence. No contact, nothing and Abi is all tied up in knots again. The story goes on but if this is the pattern and I'm reading a story with just a tease of romance and the two MC's barely spend time together, I'm bound to lose interest so I'm praying in the last installment of this trilogy we get more Abi and Jake time. I will also wish for his POV.
*I was provided a copy of this novel by the author/publisher for an honest review.
The Devil's Fire has me longing for a tall glass of Jack! He is a a smooth balm to my soul and sets my heart on fire! This is a MUST HAVE SERIES that will leave you SPEECHLESS!"
And speechless I am! Rue Volley picked up the story right where it ended and it was like a rush of adrenaline. My anticipation for book two was quickly relieved with every word I read. Every trace of my finger over the screen of my Kindle and every paragraph I read.
The world, the characters, the plot and the intermingling of old and new clicked seamlessly to create a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions. I don't want to get off the ride, Rue, I want my token to last until Book 3 is ready.
In this book, Abi, is still dealing with the heartache that Jack inflicted on her but at the same time her body still feels the traces of ecstasy he trailed along her skin. Do you know of her angst? Do you feel her pain? Have you been in her um... positions??
If you haven't read The Devil's Gate grab it now so you can easily transition into the Devil's Fire. Then you can grab a token and sit next to me and wait for the next book and ride the Rue Volley rollercoaster ride of storytelling.
I have tipped my hat to Rue many times but this time I bow, curtsy and do a #Touchdown dance! You got it in the bag baby!

This is the second book in this trilogy. You must read them in order. I wish I could give this ten stars. Rue Volley is a must read author. She has a way with her writing that just pulls you in and it won’t let you go even after you finish reading. Her books are unpredictable, just when you think you know what will happen, there’s a twist. And boy are they always great twists.
Abi, with a little push from her friend/boss, goes back home. She needs to get herself together. It’s not simple to move on from Jack though.
Her mom is freaking awesome. She has “liberated her vagina”.
There is so much going on in this book. I’m actually having problems getting my thoughts together. I can’t give anything away.
Abi has some great friends though, Avery and Sam.
Man-bun Brad had me laughing with the bridge scene.
I want to go skydiving and I want to buy a mask now too!
Victoria and Rose are so crazy, they need to be locked in a room with white padded walls.
Avery, Avery, Avery…”This is Sparta”. I was dying.
Jack will have you loving and hating him.
“Love…in all it’s ugly glory.” “For love is ugly, if It wasn’t, it it were pristine and predictable, then it wouldn’t make you scream. It wouldn’t force you to give up that part of yourself that only you knew existed. “ “It would never be epic, as it should be.” “Painfully unforgettable.”
This is a must read trilogy! Heck Rue could rewrite the phone book and I would read it. I need the next book NOW!
When Author Rue Volley gives us a story, she give us an amazing one.
Once again, just like a The Devils Gate, The Devils Fire sucks you in. With every in-depth detail, you'll feel like you're inside this book. Rue gives us just enough, but then BAM, we're left open jawed, shocked, and maybe a few nasty word's spewed.
Abigail Watson has returned to her hometown, there is only so much a woman can take, and New York isn't big enough for both her and Jack. Abi has one thing, try to get over Jack, and try hard she does. But once you're under a Jack Landon's spell, there is no going back. Hell, no man can make you forget him. He's inside you, down to your marrow.
Can Abi move on, forget about Jack and live her life?
There is so much I want to put, but can't. You just have to read this book. So many secrets are revealed, secrets that we had no clue about. There is still this mystery surrounding the Landon's that I'm trying to figure out. I know I'm not even probably close to what's really going on. All the characters that we love are back, and man do I love them. They make this book.
Let me leave you with just a few word's: Mask, skydiving, bejeweled who ha, and The Devils Gate.
The Devils Fire is book two in The Devils Gate Trilogy and once again it does not disappoint. Rue Volley accomplished what all writers who write series books or trilogy books should...making each subsequent book better than the first. I am astounded as to how good this book is, and how masterfully written the characters and story are. The story does contain bdsm scenes and explicit sex scenes ;but never did I feel that any of the scenes weren't tasteful and very well written. This book picks up where the first one The Devils Gate left off and I loved how seamlessly it continued the story and drops right into action page after page. There is so much gut wrenching emotion and heart break and at the same time joy and comedy just as real life has, that it swoops you away and you just can't put it down. Your heart will pound, you will cry, laugh and scream especially at the cliff hanger, and what a doozy it is! I can't wait to sink into book three The Devils Kiss. If you have an open mind and are a fan of well written erotica, do yourself a favor and read these books. You will not be disappointed by Rue Volleys writing or the story of these beautiful broken souls trying to figure out their lives and their hearts.
I LIKED book one…I LOVED book two *some spoilers pertaining to book one*
After Jack broke Abi’s heart she decided that she needed to get away for a while. She goes to stay with her mom in her old childhood home to escape the city and get her head cleared. While she doesn’t want to date anyone for a while her mom on the other hand has changed and wants to experience anything and everything. Her mom just wants Abi to be happy so she pushes her to go on a few dates with some of the locals to help her get over Jack. Abi reluctantly agrees but no matter what, her heart still belongs to Jack no matter what demons he’s fighting. But Jack’s family still has secrets and not everything is always what it seems. I loved this story. It was very fast paced and hard to put down. Abi needing time away and being in a whole new environment really worked for the story. The ending is totally kick ass! There were so many jaw dropping moments in the third act that my head is still reeling from. I’m so excited and can’t wait for book 3.
Excellent! Holy Cheeseballs!! I am still processing this bodacious installment. Miss Volley has done it yet again... created a world so incredibly fascinating that once I picked it back up, I could not put it down. Well written, fast paced, and easy to read, this is a beautifully twisted presentation of an erotic world like no other.
Abigail is an amazing character, she is a complete mess where Jack is concerned, and Jack, oh man, he is just amazeballs, even with his issues! I laughed a lot at the humor and cried along with Abigail as she journeys through the story. The ending blew me away... So cannot wait for installment three!! Bring it on!!!
I don't use spoilers in my reviews because they can ruin it for others. All I can say again is ~ This should be a movie!!!
I was gifted an e-copy for review purposes. No renumeration was involved
Recommended for the 18+ readers out there who like real steam in their reads.
This book sucked me in and did not let go. I had a book hang over from this one. I laughed, cried, and celebrated all in one roller coaster of emotions. I highly suggest that you read the first book before this one. It is good by itself but there are things that will not impact you as much if you don't read the first one. Anyone who has had there heart broken by someone that was their whole world will relate to the heart break and depression that Abigail goes through. Her mother is a riot, I laughed so hard I had to use a pillow to muffle the sound. The surprise at the end left me shocked for a whole day. I honestly had to let myself just think about the book and just absorbed everything that happened then sleep on it before I was normal again. It will suck you in, shake you up, then spit you back out. It is not just a story, it is an experience.
The Devil's Fire seamlessly picks up right after the first book in the series leaves off. As is not atypical of the incomparable Ms. Volley, we are treated to cold shower inducing scenes almost immediately, but this is in no way a bad thing. Rue Volley has a way of capturing a sexy scenario that does not distract from the plot, dialogue or theme. With scenes as graphic as these, that is a tricky thing to accomplish and still do justice to the story and there is a lot of story here! Is it a romance, a mystery, a coming of age story? All of the above and more. Unlike most novels or series labeled as erotica, if one should remove scenes of a graphic nature, you would still have a book with merit that stands alone without them, but hey, you don't have to! Enjoy both! Rated for an adult audience.
Devil's Fire continues as if Devil's Gate never ended. The second book picked up right where the first left off. Devil's fire takes you into the history and back stories that Devil's Gate did not get a chance to do. Throughout this book one can get lost in emotion. From anger at the way things end in Devil's Gate to joy and happiness when questions are answered and relationships are repaired, Devil's Fire was a nonstop, OMG read.
Rue Volley takes each character to the next level with her magical words. As you read through this book, if you aren't left feeling some sort of emotion then there is something wrong. Rue brings the characters so close to the reader you can't help but scream "Can I get another!" when this book ends. I look forward to seeing what happens in the final chapter of this trilogy!
A twisted tale of Love and Hate.... Every character is Awesome. I so want the plot to go one way, then all of a sudden, BAM! What?! What just happened? Your heart sinks of the pain on the next turn. I really have enjoyed the First and Second book in "The Trilogy" now just waiting on the Third :) Just like the first book in this series, I loved it. The authors of this book must have a lot going on in her head. Her characters must be giving her a hard time. Her books are so full of emotions and action filled. I mean there is loss and love. Hate, deception and lies. Birth and death. Good moments and then there's moments you will want to yell at the character. There are the rich people. And there are the poor people that have to do things their not proud of. There is sex. Lots of sex between one guy and many women. But there is only one that he loves and can't have.
Arrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhh. I turn and it's the last page! Nooooooooooo. I need The Devil's Kiss right now! This series is absolutely brilliant and I already know that book 3 in this trilogy will be phenomenal. I love Rue Volley's writing because it's amazingly smart and creative, full of twists and turns, there's never a dull moment which makes their books impossible to put down. If I could tell you about The Devil's Fire in one little quote it would be this one: "Love - in all its ugly glory. For love is ugly, if it wasn't, if it were pristine and predictable, then it wouldn't make you scream. It wouldn't force you to give up that part of yourself that only you knew existed. It would never be epic, as it should be. Painfully unforgettable." Bravo. Bravissimo Rue!
Oh my goodness! What a freaking ride! I feel like I've been through a meat grinder, all raw! A book that can ring out that kind of emotion from me is definitely worth 5 stars! The book continues where book one left off and the roller continues all of the way through. This book has so many twists and turns you can't get over one thing when bam, another whammy comes! I can honestly tell you that this book is worth the read and the ride!
I am so totally into these books!! I am a Sam fan though! Would love to see pictures of him! I love the conversations between Abi & her mom. My heart breaks for Abi especially at the end of the book, but I somehow feel that this is just about her twist that our lovely author is throwing at us. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Wow. The Devil's Fire is stunning. Amazing. I certainly wasn't expecting a lot of what happened. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect. I felt bad for a couple of the characters throughout the book. I also was surprised by the ending. I absolutely can't wait to see what happens next!
I finished this book in 4 hours...could not put it down. I love Volley's writing style! I was shocked and tantalized at every turn. I can't wait for the next book!
I love this book so much it hurts. I’m in literal tears right now. I love that there is more of Avery. She reminds me of an over energized puppy. It’s adorable. I love the humour in this one. The witty remarks, the introduction to the paranormal, and the amazing twist at the end. I’m not waiting even a second to dive into the next one.
I am having a really hard time liking Jack. Like for real, I don't like him, at all. However, we meet a new version of Abi's Mom. Oh my goodness, I freaking love her. She lightens the mood a ton. This book has so much drama, it was hard to put down! We meet a few new people, it keeps things interesting.
I am in love with these characters! And some of them I love to hate. What an ending! I was shocked. Now on the the third book in this fantastic trilogy.
