In a nation conquered by the more technologically advanced Cessor and a time when dragons are fading into legend, Allanas is born in a remote mountain village that ultimately rejects her. Suspicious of her changing skin color, she is accused by her own father of bringing plague to the village and is chased out by a vigilante mob.Forced to wander while her body completes its metamorphosis to functioning photosynthetic skin, Allanas is tracked by slavers and caught. Sold into slavery, she begins a new life where she is protected from the superstitions of others. But even as she feels safe for the first time, her life begins to unravel in other ways as she's drawn into the mystery and history of dragons in the Matterhorn Kingdom before it was conquered.
I ended up picking this book up in a little store in West Virginia where the author lives. Once I started this book I couldn't put it down and ended up finishing it over the weekend. Now I can't wait to start the second book!
Ostracised by her father, Allanas was raised by Lindor, a healer. She would get sick and her skin would change color, from yellow to a deep green, and a voice called to her in her sleep. The villagers didn't understand and eventually she left to survive on her own. She was captured and sold into slavery, but lucky to be owned by a benevolent man, Branthor a sort of scientist. Allanas was happy to be his assistant, and grew found of those around her, then he died and she was sold again. The governor of the kingdom bought her and gave her to the king of Cessor as a gift, a concubine. The voice, a dragon became stronger and tried to take over her mind and body. When the king raped her, she called out to the dragon to help; he slayed the king and took her to his land to be with her own kind.
