A quick review for a very quick read. I'm always interested in learning new techniques to enhance creativity, because creativity can be used in all facets of life to improve one's quality of living - but I was significantly underwhelmed by this book. I didn't feel like I learned anything new as far as the techniques to enhance creativity were concern. The advice is sound, and some of the suggestions are ones I've already put into practice. The most helpful sections I found through the narrative were focused on barriers to creativity and how to acknowledge and address them, as well as some of the listed resources through the work. It's more focused on workplace creativity, and that may be helpful for some who peruse the guide, but for others, it may not necessarily suit their needs all that much. I wish it could've been a little more comprehensive and thorough than what it offered.
Overall score: 2/5 stars.
Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher.
What an excellent book. Lots of ideas to spark creativity. In the back of each chapter there are questions to help you along in your own quest. I wish each idea was a little more exhaustive, but with so many it would be impossible. Alot of external resources like websites, books, and blogs. An awesome labor of love! Thank you.
Jumpstart Your Creativity: 10 Jolts to Get Creative and Stay Creative (Jumpstart Series)
Ten chapters in this book.
This non-fiction book starts out reading like a co-starring podcast, or YouTube video. I got a little lost in the first few pages because it felt like it needed to be read fast. After the beginning though, it read like a typical self-help book. The chapters are short enough to read one or two over break and still have time to think them over and make notes/answer questions.
This is a self-analytical/engaging book in that the reader is requested to make notes and lists and otherwise be engaged in physical activities with the book, with a section at the end of each chapter to physical answer questions and make notes.
I didn't use it that way; I am engaged in the creative profession. I used it more as a way to gather quick analysis to see if I could learn something new. Therefore, I read the headlines or each section, skimmed the content, and proceeded as such. There were a few new ideas in this book, but mostly if you speed-read it, you'll be perfectly fine.
I do think, in my experience, a lot of the ideas they gave are exactly creative; the cautionary bits were my experience as well.
An overall good book for beginning creative types; bypass if you've been immersed in the creative process as long as I have (20+ years,) because you probably know all the tips already they gave in this book. (I have attended a lot of webinars and seminars that overlap several of the ideas presented here.)
Some of the examples they presented as a way of pushing people out of boxes backfired on me. Just because those ideas are ideas are so-called "outdated" do not mean there isn't a way to re-invent them!
Finally, a lot of the ideas presented are for groups. I do not work in a group when I'm creative. I was disappointed in that, and actually skipped over most of that section, though, I suppose you could adapt some of the ideas into individual ones. (As a note: The list "Embrace Accidents for Success," in which inventions/discoveries were created by accident, I found it interesting that LSD is listed among these accomplishments. Because all these other items are very good creations, I found it interesting that they listed an illegal, illicit drug. Something to ponder about the legitimacy of this book.)
When they got all political and looking into the future, I found myself rolling my eyes. To suppose something (here, it was the education system,) is a fallacy in the making. I didn't buy this book for political means. I bought it to learn more about how to be creative. Also, I felt this book sometimes got caught up in the the "why" people are not creative, instead of the "how" to stay creative. (This book likes to focus on X PRIZE Foundation, FYI.) However, there are loads of good links in this book (some not live links, however.)
It all boils down to this: read; stay busy; accept; journal, or take time to think about things; stop to enjoy; change it up; and look at things where you normal don't.

This is a book I want the hard copy version of, not just the digital.
How to Skin a Badger, err. Jumpstart Your Creativity is a fun, insightful read from the first paragraph, to the last. There are exercises (questions) at the end of each chapter to help you embrace your creativity.
I know, I am about to abuse the word, but the authors have some creative ideas for how we can find and embrace our inner creative self. I can see how these methods have worked with business, groups and individuals. They appear to be common sense, once you've read the book, and you wonder why you didn't think of it yourself.
Probably, because like me, you have been denying your creative side..
Read this book. Seriously. No matter where you are in your life, it can help you find the lost side of you. The side that is creative. Once you find that side, it can open doors to other things, including the possiblity of learning how to enjoy the things you do now...like work. Maybe you can teach yourself a new way to do the same old...same old.
I got this through NetGalley to pre-read. I requested it because, being a creative person, I am always interested in how to increase or help others realize creativity.
What I found in this very quick read was a lot of great ideas, especially if you are needing to infuse your job/organization with creativity--but for those of us who are already actively creative, the ideas weren't especially helpful in increasing creativity. Part of the issue, I think, for me, is that I already do a lot of these thing (or variations thereof). And while I can see a lot of the suggestions working great for those who are rusty in the creative areas, for me, they would slow me down.
The tone of the book is light, breezy, but full of helpful links and suggestions. And it did read quickly (I read it in about an hour). Highly recommend to anyone who needs to be more creative, especially in their job.
Jumpstart Your Creativity is a light, fun approach to spark ideas. It's got a light humorous tone because this is sometimes the best way to generate new, creative ideas. The tone may be offputting to certain readers looking for more serious work, but I think it fits perfectly into the topic of the book.
With lots of creative ideas on meetings to brainstorming sessions and individual creativity, there is something here for anyone. The book is short, but every chapter concludes with some self-evaluation areas to help spur creativity. The book ends with a series of books, blogs and self assessment tests that can further bring out your creative self.
I was given a review copy of this book by Sound Wisdom Publishers and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for letting me review this book.
The title (and cover design) caught my attention right away. I wasn't disappointed reading it and actually enjoyed it. While a lot of self-help books are dry and full of boring logic, this one was written in a very entertaining way. Not only will you learn something, you'll enjoy the process. The suggestions are really good, valid, and effective. Overall it's well written and an easy fun read.
I receive a free copy of the ebook version from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I picked it up mainly because I'm interested in improving the creative process for writing.
However, the focus is mostly the business environment. This is not bad. They have a lot of truth in how techniques like brainstorming don't work because they weren't (and aren't) used correctly.
That said, they introduce some really interesting new (to me) techniques. I look forward to using them at work.
its all about the way your brain works regarding creativity, provides you with tools, techniques and ideas and loads of information to stimulate and trigger your creative mind so you become more aware of what is going on around you, what you watch on TV or through magazines and papers, brainstorms your brain into action.
A fun and easy read, full of little snippets of ideas and advice to induce creativity. The 'C' word is used a LOT so by the end the overly bubbly positive writing style wore me down. However it's short, snappy, and especially the first chapter is full of methods which can be used in all walks of life. 3.5!
This book inspires you to greater creativity in problem-solving -- especially in the business sector. A toolbox of resources that will fit any scenario. Plus a humorous, enjoyable read
