Although I always loved the huge skies of East Anglia and its often wild and windy coasts it was a visit to the Lake District, in my early twenties, that changed everything for me: with its mysterious towering fells and deep jewel like lakes, I fell in love with the place instantly.
My companion on that first, and many subsequent visits, was an unfeasibly young woman who seemed slightly baffled when I said we should come and live here - now, this minute. Several minutes, a number of career changes, two relocations and two grown up children later, the pair of us finally retired to the Lakes during one of the many Covid lockdowns. We have not looked back since.
As well as being constantly drawn towards the summits of the fells, I have also always had a desire to write but, with a full-time career, two children and no real idea about what I wanted to write, I found myself with an ever growing collection of unfinished novels - once upon a time on floppy disks (some of you may need to ask your grandparents!) and more latterly, on memory sticks. It wasn't until I came to Cumbria that I found both the time and the inspiration to make my latent ambition a reality. Throughout the DI Wayland mysteries, the lakes, fells and people of Cumbria are a constant feature. I am lucky in that the unfeasibly young woman who did me the honour of not just introducing me to the Lakes, but also marrying me, is born of Cumbrian stock, giving me an incite into the hardy but gentle folk who inhabit this wonderful part of the World - I may never understand everything they say, but I've come to love them nonetheless.
I hope you enjoy reading my DI Wayland novels as much as I enjoyed writing them. But here's a spoiler: If you ever find a passage or a character in one novel that doesn't seem to fit with the narrative, just make a mental note - it may prove to be a crucial detail in one of the later novels. But fear not, although the novels follow a sequence, each is a stand alone story and can easily be enjoyed without having to read all of them - my publishers just hope that you find time to enjoy them all!

Love this new addition to a gripping series

A body is found hanging from a cliffside, suspended by his climbing gear and left to die... in terms of murder weapon and cause of death, this is certainly an unusual method. I don't think I've even seen that cause of death in fiction before. It sets the scene for a dramatic book that exposes a crime decades in the making and forces Simon Wayland to confront some of his heroes and learn they are people too.
Simon Wayland is a great character, this is the first book I've read in this series and he is dangerously close to retirement. I don't want his adventures to end! I don't know how many more there can be, or where he goes next but I am invested in everyone in this book, from Ginge to Simon to the wider police force and all their families.
This was a great mystery, the tension builds, there are plenty of clues and hints, so that when it does come out as to who did it, it makes sense. I wasn't super happy with the very end, it felt slightly too much like a neat little cop out, but I really enjoyed the journey getting there.
Also what's with the dreams. They were full on creepy and I loved them, but I hope the next book provides some clarity - Simon clearly understands what they are, so its about time he shares that with us. There is clearly still some secrets in his past for us to uncover.
I also really enjoyed the diversity representation here, it didn't feel forced or stuck in for the sake of it, but just a natural reflection of modern day Britain.
All in all, highly entertaining, worth a read regardless of if this is your first or third foray into this world, and I will be seeing out the other two in this series to see what I've missed.

Although he’s a recreational climber, he certainly did not expect that he would be called on to recover a dead body from Shepherd’s Crag. He immediately recognizes the dead man as Chet Brierley, a famous climber and bestselling, although self-promoting, author. He had been murdered elsewhere and positioned on the mountain. Wayland begins to investigate and interviews another climber who will be killed soon after. The men had been part of a tragic attempt to summit a mountain in Patagonia. There, Brierley’s futile attempt to rescue another climber led to his national fame. What happened on that climb to lead to the deaths of two men many years later?

This is the second book I’ve read in this series of 3 ( so far) and I really need to read the one I’ve missed. I enjoyed everything about this book. The complicated plotline, where everyone is a suspect but no- one seems to have done it, keeps you guessing until near the end, I hate it when I spot the culprit at the beginning! The prologue to this book is strange though as it seems to have nothing to do with the main narrative , the character doesn’t reappear and it takes place in Wales whereas this is obviously based in the Lake District. However all does become clear and this is indeed linked to the suspicious death of a mountaineer in the lakes, someone whose fêted character most definitely becomes tarnished as the investigation continues. The characters are well drawn, I really liked the main detective , Wayland, and his relationships with family and colleagues: his flirty relationship with his lesbian boss leaves the way open for future intrigue; as does the extremely unpleasant attitude of his replacement, newly arrived from Manchester. He does seem to be irreplaceable though as once again his new desk bound job in Carlisle is put on hold. Long may it continue !

David Thorpe continues to enthral with this latest in the crime series
This is the third in the series and is easily read as a stand-alone. The cleverly contrived plot keeps you guessing until the final twist. The character development is great and the descriptive of the Lakeland Fells is brilliant, for any lover of the English Lake District this series is a must. One scene describes the Fells swathed in mist and he writes that it doesn't matter that he couldnt see the tops as the view was so familiar that he could imagine what he couldn't see, how very true!
DI Simon Wayland continues to fight his own demons but does not let his nightmares hinder his detective work. This story involves some of his heroes from the climbing world when a body is found hanging from his climbing harness. The climber is discovered swinging from ropes in a famous technical climb gulley. At first it looks like a tragic accident but a closer look shows foul play.
Simon, Ginge and the rest of his small team are hunting a ritualistic killer. The body count mounts along with the tension. This is a fast paced brilliantly written page turner!

Simon is heading towards a well deserved retirement by heading an assignment that will bring the local constabulary into the AI world. As a semi-Luddite when it comes to technology, he might be an odd choice but he is asked to spring into action again on the very morning he is set to start his new job; One of his skills is climbing and only he can reach the man dangling from the Crag. When he recognizes the corpse, he is shaken. It is one of his climbing heroes who was set to launch a new book in a matter of days.
This is not going to be the last shock as his climbing idols prove to be deeply flawed. When a second corpse is discovered in a rather grisly manner, Simon is convinced there is a connection. The final death confirms this suspicion. I thought I had sussed out the villain behind the murders. The book built up my suspicions and then woosh- out of nowhere, the twist. And what a twists it was. I loved it. And there were more twists to come that were quite satisfying.
Highly entertaining with great characters and amazing settings, it deserves five purrs and two paws up.

DI Simon Wayland was supposed to be spending his last three months on the force with a cushy desk job but all that goes out he window when the body of a famous rock climber is found hanging off Shepherd’s Crag. As he is a capable rock climber he is called in to be SIO, much to the disgust of his replacement DI. Simon and his (much reduced) team have a difficult job, made even more so when their number one suspect is also found dead.
This is the third book in the DI Simon Wayland series. It is excellent and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who loves British crime novels. Although it could be read as a standalone there is enough crossover with the earlier books that I suggest it would be a good idea to have read the first two before embarking on this one. I am looking forward to reading further books in this series.

Detective Simon Wayland is supposed to be sitting at a desk seeing if A.I. can come to the same conclusions as a real detective. Not exactly an ideal job, but just the kind of job needed for a good detective that is about to retire. Then he gets a phone call.

This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it that much, I have bought the other two. Although it's book 3 in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.
It's a very well written gripping, page-turner, of a storyline and plot.
There are strong likeable characters, especially Simon and of course Ginge. Although I don't like that swear word, with him you can't help but laugh.
There's surprising revelations and many a twist that keeps you guessing. Although I never did work out the culprit.
And what a surprising conclusion.

It is an exciting story of events happening now which have their roots in the past and Simon’s climbing skills are tested as never before.
The plot twists along the way as more is discovered by the police team and the Lakes District setting is skilfully described, as are the parts of the narrative relating to the art of climbing.
Whilst the third book in the series, it reads very well as a standalone.
I look forward to reading more of the series.

Before the investigation has hardly started another body is found, and it seems they could be connected. This is book three in the series so it took me a while to get into it, as I felt I could have done with reading the first two books, but I soon got into it.

This leads him to looking to the past as that's where the roots of this murder lie. He's confounded when his main suspect is also found murdered.
The plot from here takes us on a helter skelter ride until the very end with a sting in the tail. Excellent book.

This series seems to get better and better with each book. The discovery of a renowned climber brings events from many years ago to the fore and Simon has to put his fanboy feelings aside to figure out what happened. The timing is not ideal as he is just about to step into his new admin type role when he gets the call. There is a new DI in town but we only get a brief glimpse of her here, not altogether in a favourable light, and I look forward to seeing things develop with her in the next book.
I enjoyed the delving into past events as the team tries to figure out the motivation behind the killing and there's a very interesting twist in the latter part of the book which took me completely by surprise. I read this very quickly as I found myself totally riveted throughout and I can't wait for the next book to come along.

This was the first book I have read in this series and I will certainly be catching up with the previous ones. A fast paced thriller set in Cumbria this was full of twists and turns . Everyone seemed to be a suspect even till the end and DI Simon Wayland has his work cut out solving this one . Set amongst the climbing world we are reminded of the risks people take to get that adrenaline kick . A great read

The book kept me engaged and I would buy another in the series.

Another good read in the Detective Simon Wayland series set in Cumbria. Quite an atmospheric read, which I really enjoyed, and a quick read with good developing characterisation. There is a nice, interesting twist towards the end, which surprised me, as Simon investigates the death of an experienced climber. A good crime thriller which I would recommend.

This book was outstanding. I would give it 10 stars if I could. I was captivated from the first page. The storyline is very unique and the cast of characters were fascinating. Although I had not read the first two books in the series, I was easily engaged with the investigative team and supporting characters. I have now downloaded the first two books and am making my way through them.

Excellent read
This is my first read of this author and I suspect not my last! Fast paced, lots of twists, but unlike many crime mysteries, not so many twists that you can't hold them in your brain. Loved the final parallel between DI Simon Wayland's ancestry and the crimes explored in the main story.

Another brilliant book
I hope there is more to this series. I really like it. I love the characters and the plots are interesting and surprising with aloe of scenes to make one laugh. I am looking forward to to another one.

This is a great twisty read - the dual timeline aspect is quite interesting. I enjoyed the descriptions of mountain climbing - some of which were both thrilling and frightening. I look forward to more of the "retired" detective's cases

Nice to read about this lovely area.
I'm not a fan of rock climbing and that side didn't grip me but I became confused over
Wetlands secret dream and what he had done. Didn't get that bit.

I'm not a fan of rock climbing and that side didn't grip me but I became confused over
Wetlands secret dream and what he had done. Didn't get that bit.

Another great book set in the lakes, with a second story interwoven from the back ground. Great third book and looking forward to more.

a very good read
What an interesting story which gradually unfolded to reveal secrets and led to an unexpected ending. I look forward to reading more from this author

great book!
Thoroughly recommend this series. A very clever plot and I’m really warming to the characters, so I hope there is another one on the way soon!
