Not my kind of book at all. It's a collection of very short, folksy, mostly anecdote-based lessons, if you will, on how to be better at, well, just about everything. It seemed a bit too facile for my taste and I think the book overall suffered from bunching them all together. It felt like I was reading the script for a radio show, "Five Minutes with Kerry Patterson." Nothing controversial about what he writes about, just wasn't for me.
The very best way to communicate a message of instruction. or inspiration is through the effective use of stories. Kerry Patterson has this concept mastered. The Gray Fedora is full of stories, mainly personal and many of his youth, to illustrate the very basic lessons of life, work, and family. A short read that you can consume in no time at all but relish for many days later. Get it! Read it! Enjoy it!
If you are a fan of the Crucial Conversations series and Vital Smarts, then you will definitely enjoy these brief personal stories from Kerry Patterson. Not only applicable to business, but to life as well. Become a better human being when you are able to see from the other person's point of view. Approaching topics with a spirit of inquiry is always appropriate.
I enjoyed the light-hearted stories in this book. They did pass on some great life lessons, although I found myself wanting to write down a summary of what each lesson was saying... Would be good to have a summary at the end of the book with one sentence for each. Very simple read, however, and I would recommend it to others.
