Have a Mack's Horribly Hellacious Ghost Town hangover and need more? Here are three new short stories featuring the apprentices from Jon's Mysteries and Mack's Marvelous Manifestations! Each story is about a first of some kind, learning moments for the girls.
Note: Gwyn was introduced in Mack's Horribly Hellacious Ghost Town. It is recommended you read that book first, but it's not necessary. AITA for Telling My Friend She’s Being Cheated On?
One of Jon’s first lessons to me had been to mind my own business. He’d stressed to me that life would be better for me all around if I kept everything to myself unless someone asked for information. Or unless the situation called for me to reveal that secret.
I, uh, had no idea which heading this fell under.
All in the Family
I think anyone in my shoes would be nervous. I was meeting people who would be in my life for years to come. People who didn’t have to like me. Brandon and Mack assured me it’d be fine, that everyone in their family was easygoing and I’d become part of the family, but still. My own parents didn’t like me. How could I expect anyone else to?
First Time for Everything
Lazy Saturday morning with nothing to do? Check.
Unexpected ghosts needing passing? Check.
Being attacked by a ghost without Mack around to help? Uh…help?!
AJ Sherwood believes in happily ever afters, magic, dragons, good men, and dark chocolate. She often dreams at night of delectable men doing sexy things with each other. In between writing multiple books (often at the same time) she pets her cats, plays with her dogs, and attempts insane things like aerial yoga.
She currently resides in Tennessee with aforementioned cats, dogs, and her editor/best friend/sister/partner in crime.
This one was fun, you got to see the girls at work by themselves and Gwyn find her new home and friends. Abby and Skylar ended up in a shit show for the first one, just by being good friends. Funny how the guy blamed everyone else but himself, the one who made the bad choices.
It was fun to see the three girls get to know each other, you can tell they will be fast friends. Abby and Skylar got to see Gwyn work when they called for help and things escalated a bit. Gwyn managed to take care of business and do some good for some other ghosts, nice to see.
This group of 3 short stories is a bit of a mixed bag to be honest.
Rating: 3🌈
This group of 3 short stories is a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. Centered around the teenage characters from AJ Sherwood’s Jon’s Mysteries and Mack’s Marvelous Manifestations series they range from problematic to interesting.
Spoilers:
I didn’t expect this, especially considering such cool characters to work with.
AITA for Telling My Friend She’s Being Cheated On? This is the story I have major concerns about. Abby, and Skylar are both high school students with powerful magical abilities. One being able to read people. See relationships, health issues. In this case it’s that a friend is being cheated on. Fine. But it’s not the issue. The boy is not well liked. Nor is the girl who he’s having the other relationship with. Again not the problem. Although not handled well.
The issue? Abby reads that the other girl is pregnant, a fact she doesn’t realize herself. Nor does he.
All extremely serious, private sensitive information. Want to guess how it’s going to be handled? Yep announced to those involved by Abby at school. With no adults present until much later.
Nowhere is there any discussion on ethics or ramifications of this matter. We all know how deadly high school is. None of this matters. Abby has outed the cheaters.
This was almost a DNF moment.
The rest was just ok. Honestly after that. I was done.
The second story saw Gwyn settling in and the third was about ghostly call that went sideways.
But that first? Nope. Poorly executed and not well executed.
Le sigh! This was just the perfect collection of short extras to the original books. I absolutely loved reading about the three young girls that will be taking up the mantle of paranormal shenanigans and how they are adjusting to their new lives. Of course, Jon and family pop up and the whole vibe was so totally feel-good that I found myself grinning from beginning to end. Thank you, A.J. for giving us this wonderful addition to one of my favorite series! 💜
If you've been missing this world as much as I, then this trio of short stories for their apprentices gives a great glimpse into their continuing lives. Teenage girls with psychic powers - thankfully the adults in their lives know when to help!
Not as good as the rest of the series, but then I'm not a fan of teenage drama (1/3 stories)... not much happened in story 2 of 3. And story 3 was fine, just short... but I suppose that's what you get with short stories.
This was really cute. I loved getting to see the world from the eyes of the apprentices. I have to say I am more biased towards Gwyn and I really hope that once she is older she finds her anchor. I really never want to let go of this world. 5/5 stars
It was really nice getting some of the apprentices' points of view! Really wish we'd gotten some Skylar too, though. Gwyn is always a joy to have around and then we were spoiled with two stories from her PoV. Definitely enjoyed it!
What a fantastic, if too dang short in my humble opinion, look into the next generation of psychic talent, really hope we see get more in the future as they grow into their abilities
Have reread this a few times now. This is three short stories focusing on the apprentices - how they are learning their new skills as psychic, anchor and medium, how they are fitting into their new world and families and roles. Very sweet and lovely next step exploring these found families. Clean!
A.J. Sherwood never misses and I'm always happy to check in on anyone from the Jon or Mack series. Always an instant read as I love the Havili family and I hope we get more very soon
Great shorts to catch up with the apprentices. These girls are the next generation of mediums, readers and anchors. Ann’s no one should get in their way!
