I read this a while ago and remember really enjoying it. I loved the illustrations, I loved the suspense, I loved the exploration of how abuse distorts a victim's perception of love, and I loved the overall feeling of melancholy, tragedy, childhood helplessness, and loss of innocence. Something about the juxtaposition between the horror that Mokuzu has endured and her constantly lighthearted, whimsical facade is so heartbreaking and serves as a really interesting portrayal of what could be--in my interpretation anyway--maladaptive daydreaming as a coping mechanism; a means of slipping into a fairy tale world to escape from the real one. I would love to eventually read the novel this is based on if ever I can get my hands on a decent translation or learn enough Japanese to read the original.
Instead of crying at the end uncontrollably, I felt tears just passing through while reading this volume. The whole vibe is so melancholic that you know what will happen through parallels and context, but it still is so sad. I really like the main character's growth from the start. It was so painful to read the ending despite knowing it was going to happen. The scene with Umino and the guy (I forgot his name, the porcupine head) was really still in my head. The way each scene was necessary to the story and how it was told in past and present felt really nice. Please read if you want to read tragedy but great friendship with a melancholic vibe the whole way.
I slogged through this (both volumes) in French, and resorted to reading it alongside the only available English translation, but that's a scanlation, and I wanted to support the mangaka, so I bought the French version even though I can't really read it. I love the art, and the story is stark, unhappy, and shocking, but hard to turn away from. This is the only series I know of that Sugimoto both wrote and illustrated. I like Nanamaru Sanbatsu because of the illustrations, even though it had a different writer, but this is so much more powerful.
