To say this book stole my heart would be an understatement. You know when you start reading something and you can just tell right away how special it’s going to be? This book!!!
I’m so thankful for the ARC and absolutely loved getting the chance to read Becoming.
First off, the ’90s nostalgia is SO good. The songs, references, and little details from the era create an immediate connection to the story. Add in characters you can’t help but adore, and this one grabs hold of you quickly.
Shelby is such an easy character to root for. If you’ve ever felt unseen or wondered what it would be like to truly matter to someone, her story will resonate. Watching her grow, find herself, and figure out what she really wants is one of the best parts of the book.
And Shelby and Tanner? I was rooting for them the entire time. Their story left me wanting more of them, and honestly, more books please! Marcus, Jessie, Decker, and Dana are equally likable, and the friendships that develop throughout the story add so much heart.
Becoming gave me all of the feelings. It’s nostalgic, heartfelt, romantic, and filled with characters you want to spend more time with. I’ll absolutely be recommending this one to fans of romance.

This was my introduction to A.J. Beckett and wow, what an introduction to an author. South Carolina + 1996 nostalgia + college coming-of-age + romance + a woman figuring out she deserves to take up space?! Excuse me? All the elements to make me LOVEEE a book.
There is something completely different about reading a book and realizing, WAIT. I KNOW THESE PLACES. Becoming had me from the setting alone. Give me South Carolina, places I know by heart, a college campus, AND set it in 1996?! The nostalgia was nostalgia-ingggg. There was something so fun and comforting about being able to actually picture the places Shelby was experiencing instead of creating some imaginary town in my head.
But then Shelby got me. This really is a coming-of-age story in the truest sense—not just about falling in love with someone else, but about that weird, messy, beautiful season when you’re figuring out who YOU are outside of everyone else’s expectations. Shelby’s journey from the girl who has learned to make herself smaller into a woman beginning to understand that she is allowed to take up space? Hit me right in the feels.
And then there’s Tanner. THE SLOW BURN. I loved watching their relationship develop alongside Shelby’s own growth because it never felt like Tanner was there to “save” her. This was still her story. Her becoming.
There were moments that made me smile like an idiot, moments that made me ache for Shelby, and SO many moments that made me want to reach into the book and tell her, you are allowed to want more.
And maybe that’s what I loved most. Sometimes “becoming” is finally giving yourself permission to become the person who was there all along. Absolutely loved this one—and having it unfold in places that already hold memories for me made it even sweeter. 🤍
Also… can we please get more books set in South Carolina?! Because apparently reading about places I know by heart is now one of my favorite things. 😂📚✨

A solid debut, characters who are real, a story that pulls you in. The best part small South Carolina college in the 90s. The pop culture and nostalgia are spot on.
Shelby is such an easy character to relate to, she could be anyone we know. Her mother is a product of the time, and without her, we do not get Shelby’s story. As we meet her moving into the dorms, as a freshman so close to home, but it is her chance to grow. She does. She has spent her early years learning to be small but watching her grow into a person she wants to be, not her mothers daughter.
Shelby and Tanner give us a slow burn. The best kind, the relationship grows organically.
The friends group is an opportunity to explore. I hope we get to go back to South Carolina in the future.

"Para las chicas a las que les enseñaron a ser buenas antes de que les enseñaran a ser ellas mismas." Que excelente dedicatoria de AJ Beckett, con eso me mantuvo atrapada. Es un libro narrado en el año de 1996 y sin embargo, con complejos que aun permanecen actuales. Shelby una chica que carga con el ser perfecta y no poder ser ella misma mientras esta en casa, debido a los constantes regaños de su madre. Y Tanner, un chico que tiene planes constantes, y un regimen tan disciplinado que salirse de su plan siente que ya fracaso o que será mediocre. Su conexión es inmediata y mientras Shelby se impulsa en la universidad a intentarlo todo, Tanner intenta no romper el plan que trazó para el éxito aún cuando se priva de la diversión y del vivir. No obstante, el amor no es un plan a trazar y es lo maravilloso porque aunque Tanner no quiera, comienza a aceptar lo inesperado. Es una historia de amor que se desarrolla muy lentamente, a un ritmo pausado pero que mantiene al lector enganchado. Así que si te gusta el slow burn sin duda lo disfrutaran. Me sentí dentro de la historia como espectadora y realmente me encantó de principio a fin. Además, los personajes secundarios, Dana y Marcus fueron puntos fuertes y es que todo esta muy bien desarrollado porque apoyan a esta pareja que carga complejos de inseguridades y que se atreven a intentarlo a pesar de ellas. Y es que el crecimiento personal esta bien escrito debido a lo lento que se va cociendo esta historia.

When I saw teasers for a book set in college in the 1990s, I knew I had to request this ARC. I went to college in the ’90s, so this one felt a little like coming home. 🥰

Shelby heads off to college expecting to figure out who she is and where she fits in, but along the way she finds friendship, new experiences, and maybe a little romance, too. At its heart, this is a story about growing up, finding your people, and becoming the person you’re meant to be.
I loved these characters, especially Shelby and her roommate Dana. Watching Shelby grow and gain confidence throughout the book was one of my favorite parts.
I’ll admit, I was a little worried that a college setting might make this feel too YA for me—but it didn’t! It has that coming-of-age feel without feeling too young, which I really appreciated.
And can we talk about the playlist at the end?! The ’90s anthems were perfect and honestly felt like the soundtrack to my own college years. 🎶🙌

MUST Read! The Ultimate 90s Nostalgia Romance
Don’t let the contemporary romance label fool you - there is real depth here. Mental health, identity, the weight of choosing who you want to become. As lit goes, for me, I would put this directly after Anna Karenina. I know, I KNOW - two completely different books. But the underlying honesty is the same. Tolstoy is one of my favorite authors, and A.J. is a Gen X writer bringing that same emotional reckoning to a whole new generation. That is not a comparison I make lightly.
Tanner - a devoted law student & competitive swimmer. Shelby - a sheltered girl trying to come out from under her picture-perfect mother’s emotional control. Each of them having to make decisions about who they are and how to become their best selves. A group of very supportive friends who have their own decisions to make as well.
You will laugh, you will cry, and you will feel like you are back in the 90s living your best life.
I will say it - this should be required reading for high school seniors and college freshmen. So much pain, heartache, and so many bad choices (and the fallout from them) could be avoided if young adults had realistic, healthy romantic expectations set for them instead of what we see modeled today. A.J. does exactly that, and never once preaches. The lessons are just there, woven into the story, waiting for you to feel them.
You may also find that you are seen in a way that you have never been before, because there is absolute wisdom in A.J.‘s writing about becoming the person you want to be. It’s remarkable, and I absolutely felt this book deep in my soul.

OMFG!?!? This was a beautiful college, coming of age, semi-slow burn (which I usually DESPISE btw!!) romance that made me feel so happy yet ache for the characters at the same time.
I love how realistic this felt - two college students trying to figure their life the hell out with pressures going on around them. We got sweet girl, Shelby, trying to find her voice while her mother watched her under a microscope, wanting to learn what true love feels like, AND most importantly wanting to find herself. And Tanner, the one track minded, strict scheduled swimmer and pre-law student in order to make his dad happy.
I LOVED the progression of this book!! Nothing felt rushed or forced, and neither of them were trying to “save” each other which can sometimes be the case in other romance novels. These were two people with their own issues, but came together to support one another and help each other grow. The last 25% made me want to shake the characters so bad and be like WTF, but it was absolutely needed for their individual growth.
Overall, a fabulous debut novel!!

Becoming is a college romance set in the 1990s that follows Shelby and Tanner. Both of these characters are trying to find their way. Shelby is a freshman, and now that she's away from home and her mother's scrutiny, she's using this time to find herself and become a strong, independent woman. Tanner is the opposite. He's pre-law, on the swim team, and hoping for a summer internship with a judge. He is focused on his routine, schedule, and work and has no time for fun or girls this year. Then he sees Shelby, and his whole axis tilts. Shelby and Tanner are both messy and flawed characters, but I loved this. Their relationship is raw and real. It's not all rainbows and butterflies. I loved seeing them grow not only as a couple but as individuals. This is a book about first love, self-discovery, and becoming who you want to be. It's the perfect nostalgic read. I loved the main characters and all the side characters. It's one of those reads that feels like a warm hug. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Literally obsessed with this book! I received this book as an ARC and it was so good! I felt like I really connected with Shelby because she always had intrusive thoughts about herself and that she never felt like she was good enough for anyone. I loved that she got more confident throughout the book, even though her intrusive thoughts almost got the best of her at one point. I really loved that the bond with her mom changed and grew as well. Shelby’s relationship with Tanner was such a slow burn in the beginning and really ramped up. Also loved that Tanner got to learn that it’s not all work and no play, which was something I also had to learn at some point in my life. I cannot wait to read AJ’s next book, I need to see what happens with the other characters and I don’t want to spoil it, but I knew this relationship was going to happen since the party in Marcus and Decker’s room early on.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into a college romance, especially since I’m not exactly the target age for college romances anymore. 😂 But I really enjoyed this one!
It’s a coming-of-age story about figuring out who you are and where you fit in the world, and I thought A.J. Beckett did a great job with that. I really enjoyed all of the characters, which is unusual because there’s usually at least one I can’t stand. That wasn’t the case here.
I also enjoyed watching this group of friends become friends and build their relationships. I knew going in that there was some spice, so that wasn’t a surprise.

Feels like home
What a beautifully written, cozy read. Well thought out dynamics, and I teared up and laughed throughout! I felt a kinship seeing Tanner’s perspective and how he navigated his studies and life because that’s exactly how I was putting myself through mortuary school. The family dynamics of his dad but also Shelby’s mom is something I related to on a deep level, and seeing the bonding near the end was so sweet. I can’t wait to read the next book! I finished this one in three days because I wanted to keep reading!

The emotions, vulnerability and dynamics of a college romance were so well done. The story flowed effortlessly, and the imagery and descriptions dropped me right onto a college campus in the ’90s.
I felt all of the emotions and all of the feels of the main characters. The uncertainty, hopes, and self discovery made this feel so authentic.
A beautiful story; 100% eager to continue with this series.

I loved the 1990’s theme of this book and it was absolutely what drew me in. Having been a teenager and growing up in the 90’s I loved the reference, The music specifically (Gin Blossoms, the Cranberries) to name a few. This book was more of a slow burn than I typically like but I thought it was well done.

incredibly sweet story
This story brought me back to college days before social media. Meeting my now husband when I also lived in the dorms. I could picture the campus and was rooting for them as if I knew them. Definitely recommending this book to all my college friends, bringing us back to those simple years.

I genuinely don't know how to say goodbye to this story.
Becoming completely stole my heart. From the nostalgic 1996 college setting to Shelby and Tanner's beautifully messy, heartfelt journey, every page made me feel something. The slow burn, the yearning, the found family, and the quiet moments that somehow said everything made this one of my favorite romances I've read in a long time.
What I loved most about this book is that it's so much more than a love story. At its core, it's about becoming the person you're meant to be.
Shelby quickly became one of my favorite female main characters. Watching her slowly find confidence in herself, learn to take up space, and become the version of herself that she wanted to be was incredibly rewarding. Her growth never felt rushed. It happened through small, meaningful moments that made her journey feel authentic. Tanner's growth was equally compelling. He begins the story so focused on success and the future that he forgets to leave room for actually living. Watching him realize that love, friendship, and joy are just as important made me root for him every step of the way.
AJ Beckett absolutely nailed the slow burn. The romance isn't built on grand gestures. It's built on lingering glances, witty banter, late night conversations, tiny moments of vulnerability, and all the little interactions that make you fall in love right alongside the characters. I found myself smiling through so many scenes, and more than once I was kicking my feet while reading.
The supporting characters deserve just as much love. Marcus became one of my favorite characters almost immediately, and his friendship with Shelby is one of the best platonic friendships I've read in romance. Dana, Decker, Emil, and the rest of the cast made Harlow University feel like a place full of people I'd genuinely want to spend time with.
The 1996 setting added so much charm without ever feeling overdone. From the music to the land line phone calls and the college atmosphere, it was impossible not to feel nostalgic. It reminded me why I love college romances so much in the first place.
This book made me laugh, swoon, ache, and smile more times than I can count. It gave me characters who felt real, relationships worth rooting for, and a story I'll be thinking about for a very long time.
Becoming isn't just about falling in love with another person. It's about learning to love yourself enough to become who you were always meant to be.
I already miss Shelby, Tanner, Marcus, and everyone at Harlow University, and I have a feeling I'll be thinking about this story for a long, long time.
Becoming completely stole my heart. From the nostalgic 1996 college setting to Shelby and Tanner's beautifully messy, heartfelt journey, every page made me feel something. The slow burn, the yearning, the found family, and the quiet moments that somehow said everything made this one of my favorite romances I've read in a long time.
What I loved most about this book is that it's so much more than a love story. At its core, it's about becoming the person you're meant to be.
Shelby quickly became one of my favorite female main characters. Watching her slowly find confidence in herself, learn to take up space, and become the version of herself that she wanted to be was incredibly rewarding. Her growth never felt rushed. It happened through small, meaningful moments that made her journey feel authentic. Tanner's growth was equally compelling. He begins the story so focused on success and the future that he forgets to leave room for actually living. Watching him realize that love, friendship, and joy are just as important made me root for him every step of the way.
AJ Beckett absolutely nailed the slow burn. The romance isn't built on grand gestures. It's built on lingering glances, witty banter, late night conversations, tiny moments of vulnerability, and all the little interactions that make you fall in love right alongside the characters. I found myself smiling through so many scenes, and more than once I was kicking my feet while reading.
The supporting characters deserve just as much love. Marcus became one of my favorite characters almost immediately, and his friendship with Shelby is one of the best platonic friendships I've read in romance. Dana, Decker, Emil, and the rest of the cast made Harlow University feel like a place full of people I'd genuinely want to spend time with.
The 1996 setting added so much charm without ever feeling overdone. From the music to the land line phone calls and the college atmosphere, it was impossible not to feel nostalgic. It reminded me why I love college romances so much in the first place.
This book made me laugh, swoon, ache, and smile more times than I can count. It gave me characters who felt real, relationships worth rooting for, and a story I'll be thinking about for a very long time.
Becoming isn't just about falling in love with another person. It's about learning to love yourself enough to become who you were always meant to be.
I already miss Shelby, Tanner, Marcus, and everyone at Harlow University, and I have a feeling I'll be thinking about this story for a long, long time.

"I thought the cost of becoming someone worth being was giving up the things that made life worth living"
What a debut book this was for A.J. Beckett. The ultimate nostalgic 90's book, Becoming was a story of two characters who meet at Harlow University. Shelby is a new freshman on campus, while Tanner is an established swimmer and upperclassman, ready to get his future set with a killer internship for the next year. Shelby feels like she walks in the shadow of her mother's perfectionism and has to keep a persona alive while dimming herself down. Tanner has the same weight on his shoulders from his father's expectations and has to keep himself on track to get to law school and intern for this hotshot judge. But when they meet one fateful night through Shelby's neighbor from home, their lives are never going to be the same. Tanner is a rigid guy with a set schedule of swim practice, coffee cart (the owner of said cart is a great side character BTW), class, study, rinse and repeat. But Shelby did something to him that he can't shake. He wants to become someone better but he's torn when he's already doing his best. But is it his best for himself or for others? Shelby has her own coming of age experience with her girl friends, finding love in dancing again and cracking through the tough exterior of a guy who stole her heart. Is it enough for them to become who they're meant to be together? Or are they better apart? You'll have to find out. I have to say, I loved the references to the 90's music like Hootie and the Blowfish, When Harry Met Sally and the amazing playlist at the end. Though I wasn't in college in the 90's, I loved how A.J. wrote with that timeframe in mind and nailed her first book. Job well done!

The ’90s nostalgia in this book was SO good. The songs, references, and all the little details of college life in 1996 immediately pulled me into the story, especially as someone who went to college in the ’90s. There was something incredibly fun about recognizing so much of that world.
I was rooting for Shelby and Tanner from the beginning. Tanner definitely frustrated me at times, but I also understood that so much of his hesitation came from how tightly he had planned his entire future. Shelby was the character I really found myself cheering for. Watching her begin to figure out who she was after spending eighteen years under her mother’s scrutiny was both heartbreaking and satisfying. I could practically feel her mother judging her from the page.
I also loved the friendships throughout the book. Marcus, Jessie, Decker, and Dana added so much humor, warmth, and that wonderful college found-family feeling. They made Harlow feel like more than just a setting. And I can't forget about "Dave". If you know, you know.

I was so excited to receive this ARC from the author. I knew that I had to read this since it is set in a college setting during the same year I was a freshman and knew it would bring me back to a wonderful time in my life. Becoming did just that! The song references, the friends, the campus life and outside of school life brought all the nostalgia I had hoped for.
I loved the connections that Shelby, Dana, Tanner, Marcus and Decker create throughout the book. Friendships that will last a lifetime and memories to share forever.
Shelby wanted to find herself and who she was going to become. Self-discovery away from her mother’s criticism. Tanner knew exactly what he wanted and had a set plan to make it happen. That is until Shelby walked into his life. The unfolding of their relationship was beautiful but frustrating at times. I do believe that’s exactly how relationships can be in college.

1990s college setting? I immediately said sign me up! I really enjoyed Tanner and Shelby and even Shelby's bestie Marcus. He really looked out for her! This was all about the slow burn for her and Tanner, though and I love a slow burn. They were both focused on their studies, but especially Tanner with his strict rules that he set for himself in order to reach his goals. Again, the 90s setting really drew me in and I appreciated that it came across natural and not forced like I've read in some other books with settings in the past. Enjoyable read!

I received an advanced copy of Becoming from the author. Becoming by AJ Beckett was a slow burn college romance. This book brought back some college memories while reading it. You definitely developed a soft spot for Shelby and Tanner. Shelby built her own path while Tanner tried to stay focused on the future he had carefully planned. Their connection felt both emotional and authentic. The 1990s setting and strong character growth made this an enjoyable read.

September 25, 2026I really truly want to love this and I think I will, just at another time. It’s poetic and nostalgic, calm and slow. Something worth taking your time to read- which is why I’m (soft) DNF-ing at 40%. I will come back to it when the time is right for me to finish it. I just feel like it would be unfair to myself and the book to push through when I’m not in the right reading head space to do so. I really appreciate early access from the publisher and Netgalley.

For a debut novel, this story made me long to go back to college and rediscover the fun I had all over again. With the story taking place in South Carolina, it was so fun to read about places that I am familiar with and have personally been to. I loved the reference to Sweeter Than Fiction (a real bookstore in downtown Charleston) and loved seeing the development of the characters. I look forward to reading any additional books on this series!
