The Village Apothecary Mysteries #3
A Bitter Harvest
The harvest waits for no one.
Neither does a killer.
And the sweetest cider hides the bitterest secret.
Ivy Blackthorn loves the quiet abundance of autumn. The turning leaves. The crisp air . . . But when DI Cross asks for her help in the neighbouring village of Ashwood Vale, the season's peace doesn't last long.
Thomas Hartley, owner of the village’s beloved cider press, has been found dead at the foot of a ladder, all signs pointing to a tragic accident. But Cross and Ivy aren’t convinced. The body shows signs of yew poisoning, and the scene is too carefully arranged to be anything other than murder.
Ivy travels to Ashwood Vale with Seb at her side, their blossoming romance offering warmth against the autumn chill, and together they must untangle a web of secrets, grievances, and inherited bitterness. But the closer they get to the truth, the more Ivy fears they have the killer all wrong, and that the Harvest Festival may become the deadliest night Ashwood Vale has ever seen.
A Bitter Harvest is the third book in The Village Apothecary Mysteries, offering crisp autumn air, a killer hiding in plain sight, and proof that even the sweetest harvest can be deadly.

A cozy, atmospheric mystery that proves a change of scenery can breathe fresh life into a beloved series!
In A Bitter Harvest, the third book of The Village Apothecary Mysteries by Lauren Kaye, apothecary Ivy Blackthron steps outside her usual setting into a brand-new village just as the autumn harvest begins. Alongside her blossoming romance with local mystery that threatens to disrupt the seasonal festivities. Using her knowledge of herbs and human nature, she must dig beneath the picturesque surface of her new surroundings to uncover secrets before tragedy strikes.
What I Loved
- A Athmospheric Setting: The seasonal autumn vibe and small-town charm are crafted wonderfully, making the whole reading experience feel cozy and rich in detail.
- A Fresh Location: Shifting the story to a new village was a brilliant choice. It kept the narrative from feeling repetitive and avoided the trope of having endless murders accumulate in one tiny town.
- Natural Relationship Progression: The romantic dynamic between Ivy and Seb continues to develop in such a organic, believable way. Their connection feels earned and adds a lovely emotional layer to the plot.
- Well-Crafted Mystery: The central puzzle is intricately plotted and kept me fully engaged as Ivy pieced the botanical and local clues together.
Things for Consideration
- Missing Familiar Faces: While the new setting is a welcome change for the overall plot logic, long-time fans might slightly miss the comforting presence of the original village and its familiar recurring characters.
- Minor Inconsistencies: There were a few small details throughout the narrative that felt slightly inconsistent upon closer reading, though they did not take away from the overall enjoyment.
Final Verdict and Recommendations
I give this cozy seasonal read 4 out of 5 stars. It is a fantastic pick for readers who love botanical lore, heartwarming slow-burn romance, and classic British cozy mysteries with plenty of autumn ambiance.

Book 3 in the Village Apothecary Mysteries series sees Ivy once again finding herself caught up in a murder mystery. This time the story takes us away from Thornwick Green, with Ivy again working alongside DI Cross as they try to uncover who committed the murder and, more importantly, why.
There are a few twists and turns along the way, with a good level of intrigue that kept me wondering who and why! As with the previous books, the story is an easy read and flows nicely from one chapter to the next. I enjoyed seeing Ivy and Seb’s relationship develop and getting to see a different side of the story away from the village.
Another enjoyable cozy mystery and a good addition to the series. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next for Ivy, Seb and the residents of Thornwick Green in book 4

Its like a warm hug welcoming you back this series. ☺️
Seb and Ivy are just so adorable still!
DI Cross needing Ivy's help especially when those suspicious deaths happen.
Brenda Marsh
Small town its like something outta miss Marple or midsummer murders. All the people in the town could be suspects. Love it. I spend the whole time trying to work out and then changing my mind and then im normally wrong haha
And poor Lily broke my heart
Oh and you can't forget the cutie Basil.
Just such a cute feel good cosy murder investigation 🔎 what more could you want.

Review of advance copy received from Author
I recently finished reading book three of the Village Apothecary Mysteries series and it was again, a really good read! 🙌🏻
A Bitter Harvest sees our FMC called in to help the local police department with her botanical knowledge to see if she can help them understand how and why yet another murder has occurred - but this time it's in the neighbouring village!
@laurenkayebooks has a real knack for setting you up to think you know exactly "who-done-it" ... And then giving a major plot twist you didn't expect 😅
Another ⭐⭐⭐⭐ from me. A shorter story, but really captures your interest and makes you just NEED to know the outcome!

Oh my, what an excellent storym
Another well crafted story from Ms Kaye. One that is even better than the first two.
I love how much more confident Ivy is, and how she and Seb have progressed in their relationship.
It was such a good book and I am so glad that I purchased it!
