The ghosts weren't the scary part
The trigger warnings are no joke. I repeat, the trigger warnings are no joke. There is accuracy here in the details of poor Mari... So, painfully, agonizingly accurate.
I came in expecting more ghoulish ghostly encounters... There were very few... And they were a relief, honestly. The horror here is the cult and the creeping feeling of dread that something like this might actually exist... That I've seen and heard things that sound way, way too reminiscent of this cult in this book. The creepy and horrifying here is found in the living, breathing (so to speak) characters.
If you like horror, true crime adjacent things, cult documentaries- this is for you. If you have unprocessed trauma related to a fundamentalist church, a cult, SA... Don't read it yourself unless you want to be triggered. Hand this to someone who doesn't get it and tell them this is it. This is how it is.
