In Every Light #1

The Golden Hour

In emergency medicine, the golden hour is the crucial sixty-minute window after a traumatic injury—the brief span of time when the right care can mean the difference between life and death.

Dr. Mason Carpenter lives for that hour.

At St. Mary’s Trauma Center, he is the golden boy of the Emergency Department. He’s brilliant and calm under pressure. He’s also addicted to the adrenaline, the thrill, and the absolute rush of saving patients knocking on death’s door.

At home, he’s a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart—the love of his life—Honey.

Or, he used to be.

Honey Carpenter has loved Mason since they were fourteen, when he was the gangly boy with hearts in his eyes who stumbled through asking her out for ice cream. She stood beside him through medical school, residency, crushing debt, sleepless nights, and every sacrifice it took to build the life they dreamed about.

Now Honey is pregnant with their first child.

And Mason is married to his work.

He misses ultrasound appointments, milestones, and the baby shower. Worst of all, he is never there to support Honey through an increasingly difficult pregnancy.

No matter how many times she tells him she is lonely, exhausted, and afraid, Mason gives her the same answer.

“They need me.”

But Honey needs him too.

As her pregnancy progresses and she feels something is deeply wrong, her doctor dismisses her symptoms as first-time-mom jitters.

Her husband is too busy saving strangers to see his own wife fading away.

Until Honey collapses at home and is rushed into Mason’s emergency room, fighting for both her life and their daughter’s.
Mason must reckon with what he was chasing, what he ignored, and what his absence may cost him—the woman he loves more than anything.

Now, the golden hour belongs to Honey.

And Mason may already be too late.

Sensitive Content Notes: This story contains themes of medical misogyny, prenatal depression, pregnancy complications, a traumatic birth scene, addiction and recovery, and emotional neglect.

Hi, I’m MJ Allen!

I’m a romance author from the Garden State (go birds).

I love writing contemporary romance that hurts before it heals. My stories will always feature a strong heroine, a man that’s completely devoted to her, and a dreamy romance to root for.

I like to write about delicate topics in my books such as women’s unpaid labor, gender dynamics, misogyny, enmeshment, and mental health.

My favorite tropes to write are friends to lovers, second chance, and marriage-in-trouble.

When I’m not writing, I can be found with my husband and our two cats.

Thank you so much for being here!

This was an interesting betrayal. It centers around an ER doctor who is neglecting his pregnant wife. I worked with surgeons for twenty years. I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it is for them to balance family/work life. It’s truly not a job, but a lifestyle…. a lifestyle that is NOT conducive to family life. If my daughter brought home a surgeon or ER doctor, not gonna lie… I would worry. 😬

Spoilery thoughts…

MMC is an ER doctor who is addicted to the rush of the emergency room. His wife is pregnant with a very difficult pregnancy. He’s completely abandoned his wife. Her OB doctor basically pats her on the head with a ‘Women, am I right?’ attitude.

Welp, the FMC collapses and is rushed to the MMC’s ER. She and the baby nearly die while MMC loses his shiz. It was awesome angst.

There is a wannabe OW who is loony toons level of silly. She’s hardly a blip overall though. Unfortunately, the heavy angst peters out quickly and I got bored from about 40-80%. The last 20% drew me back in.

The FMC is named Honey, and the name is appropriate. Sugar wouldn’t melt in her mouth. She’s just so perfect and sweet, it got kind of cloying to me. Once the MMC removed his head from his butt, he was perfect too. Everyone was perfect. It’s a personal thing, but I tend to get bored with those types of characters. 🤷‍♀️

After the initial angst it was quite sweet. It wasn’t my favorite, but I think it will appeal to people looking for a mellower, sweet read. They really were a cute couple.

I love this author and I would definitely recommend checking out What We Chose and No Place Like Home from her. They’re bangers. ✌️

The Golden hour

M.J. Allen does it again. She breaks your heart and puts it back together again. Let’s get one of the things out of the way right now, as some won’t touch a story with cheating. There is no cheating with the ow. There is perceived cheating, but the hero doesn’t have an emotional or physical attachment to the ow. She just wish he did…she is part of the story but is not by any means the focus in the story, her part is small but damaging. Nope, our hero is betraying his wife and vows in a different way. Our hero is “cheating” on his wife with his job as an ER doctor.

Mason has loved Honey since they were teens. She has been there to support him through his schooling and internships. They both come from solid families who love them both equally! Honey works at a daycare where she is loved by both teachers and children alike. Honey has always wanted to be a mom, and now she is several months into her pregnancy with her and Mason’s first child. Unfortunately, for her, Mason started a position in the emergency room about the time she became pregnant. He is addicted to his job. The adrenaline rush, the superiority that comes with saving lives, etc… We think of addiction as being something you snort, eat, drink, watch, etc…but what happens when that addiction is your livelihood, paying off all those college loans?

His addiction is so bad that he stays late at work when he doesn’t need to, goes in early when he can, and works extra shifts. He makes promises to Honey that he continually breaks. He has missed almost every doctor’s appointment, he has missed talking to his unborn child, and even misses the baby shower. Honey meanwhile is suffering, not only emotionally from his absence, but from the pregnancy itself. She has severe sickness and other things going on that her highly “revered” doctor dismisses and tells her that it is normal for pregnancy, basically poo pooing her. He asks Mason about her nausea, and Mason is clueless. He had no idea. In fact, had Mason been a more present husband, he may have noticed things that were not right, but he wasn’t.

Honey decides she has had enough after he misses the shower. Her parents were helping her with the nursery and she tells them that she wants to leave him and stay with them. One of the reasons being her sickness and dizzy spells are concerning her and she is scared. So her parents start packing up her stuff to get her to move and then the unthinkable happens and Honey is rushed to the hospital.

Now what I love is this is at the 12 percent mark in the book, so MJ, doesn’t give us pages and pages of his betrayal, but enough to make you rage! Nope, MJ takes her time to reform, redeem her heroes, she doesn’t give them a quick fix and a tally ho!

I don’t want to give too many spoilers as I cannot capture the pain and heart like the author can. But, Mason’s wake up call is when Honey is rushed to ER and her life and that of their unborn child are in danger of dying.

On top of this, it is found that her doctor was medically negligent and now the hospital wants to cover their tracks! At least there Nurse Ellen, friend to the couple, who does her due diligence to gather information before the information disappears .

Mason is faced with his betrayal and is fearful that he will lose Honey for good. He has to work hard and make some major changes in his life to win her back. But I like that the author doesn’t make Honey vindictive, she doesn’t try to keep their daughter away. But she is not part of the deal, and she stays strong!!!

The evildoers in the story get their karma even the ow wannabe who visits the recovering Honey in her hospital room to plant doubts about her husband’s fidelity! She also makes Honey self conscious about her post baby body! This really hurt as Honey became very insecure about it.

Ugh, there are so many things I am leaving out that make this such a well rounded, heartbreaking, heart mending story! Like Dr. Adonis, who is getting his own story, and gave Mason a little jealousy heart attack. He is not an om or even an om wannabe, but that does little to appease Mason. He becomes part of Mason’s new direction later on in the story!

This is great for people who are tired of reading about serial cheating jerks and h’s that instantly forgive them! The betrayal is more unique, and the author doesn’t have him go to a therapist to get fixed instantly. Thanks to his dad, he meets a small group of people that have their own demons and they discuss their issues in a less formal manner. This author has not been around long, but her books leave lasting impacts. I can’t wait to see what else she comes up with as she hones her craft and tries different avenues!

I’ll admit that I was half-drunk when I was reading this, so I skimmed a lot.
He was insanely self-focused on his job, and she nearly died giving birth. The baby was fine, but the mother had a C-section. I had two myself, and it was not the end of the world for me. Overall, there was no angst or drama beyond what happened during the birth.

This was good,

but I wish MJ Allen would either stop making her books all about her mmcs and how sad their lives are OR stop calling it marriage in trouble when the focus in mostly on the mmc and HIS journey to fix whatever is wrong with him this time.

Loved the secondary characters aka their parents and friends and especially dr Adonis i'm glad he's having a book i'm just scared because he's divorced.

safety:
-safe, no cheating
- owd: Mason's bitch ass coworker propositions him but he declines, she also body shames honey after she gives birth but mason files a report with HR and gets her ass fired
- no omd

Note to self

This book sounds interesting but we remember (not really I had to read my previous review and the comments 🤭🫣) that this author usually is male centered so even though the H doesn't cheat he absolutely did neglect and hurt his wife, is she going to forgive him easily? 🤔 Do I want to wade through eleventy billion pages to end up with another two star read? 🤔 Do I? Should I? I just don't learn 😫

Grovel = H has been obsessed with his job and completely ignoring his wife. His wife goes into labor, traumatically and gives birth without the H. H has sooo much to grovel for and drastically must change himself and his life to make amends to the h. So many things to grovel for and the h stands firm.

Wattpad/Patreon = originally read on other platform

Fantastic read and very emotional.

(Review from the reader who did the content pull for The Golden Hour)

TGH genuinely got me. Honey's story hit hardest. Watching her go from being dismissed and unheard by the one who was supposed to protect her and take care of her to eventually finding her voice again felt so earned. I was rooting for her so hard during the delivery scene that my chest actually hurt reading it! :(

If I'm not giving it 5 stars, it's mostly because of the pacing. Some of the ED/hospital politics in the middle stretch slowed the emotional momentum a bit for me compared to how tightly wound the Honey POVs were. But the character work and the ending completely made up for it.

I totally forgot to mention Mason, but I have to admit I was so angry at him at the beginning. But by the end, I was fully soft and ended up loving him. I am so glad he was able to redeem himself by becoming a better husband and better dad for his little family. <3

I definitely enjoyed reading The Golden Hour, and if you liked 'Things We Never Got Over' and 'Before I Let Go', then you're going to adore this one!

The Golden Hour by MJ Allen is an emotional second chance romance with a twist. It has betrayal, but not what you would expect. Mason and Honey are in love and looking forward to the birth of their baby, but Mason is also married to his work. It takes over his life, that Honey begins to feel alone and without support. When something begins to feel wrong with her pregnancy, Mason should be the first person to want to help. But he is so preoccupied, he misses so much. Appointments, events and more. Maybe Honey just does not need him anymore.

Then something happens and it changes everything. Honey puts herself and her child first and Mason realizes what he could have lost. But is it too late? Now Mason needs to prove what really matters and make new choices. Is it too late? This is an emotional story with some hard topics, but I was drawn in right from the start.

Happy reading!

4.5⭐️

This was a beautiful and poignant look at addiction and the irreparable consequences that steam in neglect. Honey endures so much and yet she never wavers in her protective menses of her daughter or her compassion. Her and Mason’s healing journey is tenuous, fragile, and never linear. There is so much hurt and yet so much redemption. Loved!!!

not sure why the author decided to switch it up with this one and go third person. it was very unpleasant. i don’t think that POV suits these kinds of stories tbh. the writing in general was also just not that great this time around.

An absolute snooze fest… there is no yummy tension, no grovel despite the colossal f**k up, no spice, no push and pull, no yearning… just boring
