A city built on beautiful lies. A girl the grave couldn’t keep.
Three hundred years ago, Vera died. But she didn’t stay dead.
Now Vera is bound to a decaying manor at the edge of Oakhaven, a city that thrives on dark magic—a magic that demands a price no one dares to name.
Until Jacobi arrived.
A hunter trained to destroy monsters like her, Jacobi unknowingly carries the same cursed power Oakhaven has taught him to despise. Vera is everything he was raised to kill.
But the deeper he digs, the clearer the truth becomes—Vera might not be the real monster.
They were meant to be enemies.
They might be the only ones who can tear the truth free before Oakhaven consumes them both.

I went into this indie debut novel (which in many ways feels more experienced than a debut!) almost blind and found it to be such a riveting story. The first interactions between Vera, Jacobi, and Bram in the setting of the manor immediately made me want to know more. The writing was funny, imaginative, and unique so that I was drawn in and entertained throughout the book. I loved the turn of phrase, for example: "his voice was dry enough to catch fire" and "He was a walking catastrope of pockets." There are a lot of great side characters, but of course, I was rooting for Vera and Jacobi, who both have tremendous transformations in this story. I'm betting they change for the better, but I'm sure there are more challenges coming their way in book 2. Vera's spotty memories give me hope for new drama, action, and romantic rivals. Excited to see what's next.

⛓️I finally finished reading The Ink Stained Soul. This is my first dark themed rom fantasy read & I must say for a first time reader of this genre the book did a good job!!
⛓️I mean the author has done a great job with world building!! AMAZING imagination!! So the story is set up in the magical city of oakhaven, a ghost - Vera who died 300 years ago & an inquisitor - Jacobi who was raised to kill people like her but they somehow end up on the same side. Though Vera died centuries ago shez still stuck in a manor for some mysterious purpose, which unfolds as the story progresses. ⛓️True to the author's foreword, the story beautifully reflects our human side where there is baggage of our past, fear of being judged for who we really are & for the choices we make & then the desperate hope to hold on to someone who actually understands our silence..
⛓️I could literally visualise the fear, the passion, the hurt, the confusion, the helplessness, the contentment & the loss felt by the characters. The Void is shown as so powerful, so strong, so controlled & yet tamed & soft. This combination of softness & strength has been beautifully captured by the author.
⛓️Maybe because this was my first fantasy read I got a little caught up in a lot of heavy details at times, but what I loved was the small readable chapters, the banter between the characters & the found family bond that grew deeper with the story. The mention of the rocks & presence of crystals was just 🤍 for me.
⛓️The cliffhanger though!!! Someone please just tell me what happens in the next book already!!!
📢If you like enemies to lovers troupe & slow burn romance, fast paced fantasies with gothic set up & a lot of secrets to be revealed then is the book for you.

@lisa_sathya has woven such a hauntingly beautiful story of a 300 year old ghost, a forgotten being who wants only revenge, who only craves the light and a young inquisitor who serves the light and believes in it! In this hunter × hunted , light vs dark story, there is no right versus wrong! Morally grey characters are my go to read, but the intensity of the emotions and the spark between these two were on a whole new level altogether!

What I liked
1. There is a map! A hand made map
2. The world building is spot on
3. The characters and the found family, love, chaos, loss and betrayal, the emotions portrayed are really beautiful.
4. The writing is immaculate and quite description. It gives that old world gothic feel

What could be improved
1. The stakes need a little more nailing in the ground
2. At some places the plot unravels a bit but Lisa did a good job weaving it back up!
3. Minor editing is still underway but this book has got a lot of potential!

So if you're a fan of dark-romantasy with hot MMCs and strong FMCs, this is your book!

"A sharp, shadow-drenched gothic romantasy that wastes zero time getting to the tension."⚔️❤️

The Ink-Stained Soul by Lisa Sathya is a gothic dark romantasy that kicks off the Soul Trilogy, set against the eerie, shadow-drenched backdrop of Oakhaven.
If you are fans of Ninth House, The Cruel Prince, and Belladonna, then you will definitely love this one💗.
The story pulls readers into Oakhaven, a world steeped in gothic aesthetics, ancient cathedrals, and dangerous political or magical factions (such as the Divisio and the Gilded Reach).

VERA, is a living ghost caged in the Manor of Oakhaven, surrounded by cursed, dark energy VOID. She has no heartbeat, no more memories of her previous life, but one day WHEN a Stranger JACOBI arrive who is sent to hunt her, her world turned upside down and she is faced to make some difficult choices. And What if the person who she hates most , is the one she start falling for?
I'm sure this journey of VERA ❤️ JACOBI will leave you in tears as well as craving more of them.

What to expect:
🗡️ Proper Enemies-to-Lovers (sharp banter + slow burn)
🏛️ Gothic, atmospheric world-building (Oakhaven)
📜 Prophecies, secret factions, and high stakes
⚡ Fast-paced read (under 300 pages!)
💗Found family

What worked so well:
🌐The Atmosphere: Lisa Sathya builds Oakhaven with rich, textured detail:-think cold basalt stone, flickering candlelit halls, and eerie shadow magic that feels genuinely threatening.

⚔️The Banter & Tension: The romantic dynamic doesn't fold into insta-love. The leads have sharp, defensive edges, and their banter is grounded in conflicting loyalties rather than manufactured drama.

💨The Pacing: Coming in under 300 pages, it completely avoids the filler and bloat common in fantasy debuts. It delivers high stakes, prophecy, and action in a tight, bingeable package.

🗒️A small note: The political factions (Divisio, Gilded Reach) and lore come at you quickly in the first few chapters, but once the pieces are in place, the story moves at full throttle.

If you want an indie dark romantasy that serves sharp banter, gothic atmosphere, and enemies-to-lovers tension without a 600-page drag, 'The Ink-Stained Soul' by Lisa Sathya belongs on your TBR."

This book completely pulled me in with its dark atmosphere, mysterious setting, and the constant feeling that there was more going on beneath the surface. I really enjoyed how the story slowly blurred the line between good and evil, making me question who could actually be trusted.

Vera was such an interesting character to follow, and her dynamic with Jacobi added so much tension to the story. I loved watching their assumptions about each other slowly fall apart as they uncovered more secrets.

The magic, gothic setting, mystery, and twists kept me hooked throughout. And just when I thought I had a grip on where things were going… THAT cliffhanger happened.

It’s already killing me because I need to know what happens next! Definitely a great pick if you enjoy dark fantasy with mystery, complicated characters, and plenty of secrets.

What’s the difference between existing and actually living?

In a world literally divided by light and darkness, the question of identity hits especially hard. I loved the way Vera and Jacobi’s arcs play against one another. Vera is trying to figure out who she used to be, while Jacobi starts questioning the person he thought he already was. The group dynamics were also a lot of fun. There’s banter and friction, which made the quieter cave scenes some of the parts I enjoyed most.

Haunting and tender, it's must-read for anyone who enjoys dark fantasy with a lot of heart underneath it.

The Ink-Stained Soul was my first-ever fantasy/romantasy read, and I have to say: it was quite an experience.

The world-building was incredibly well done and pulled me into the story from the very beginning. But one of the biggest highlights for me was the chemistry between the lead characters, Vera and Jacobi. Their dynamic added depth to the story and kept me invested.

Overall, if you’re a fan of dark romantasy, definitely consider giving this one a read!

Favourite quote from the book:

"You aren’t a ghost because you’re dead, Vera. You’re a ghost because they took the world away from you before you had the chance to belong to it.”

The story begins in a fictional town called Oakhaven, where a mysterious world has been built upon lies and dark magic. Written in a dark fantasy setting with a gothic atmosphere, the story revolves around Vera, who died three hundred years ago but remains trapped beyond death in a manor.
I like the book very much. It's easy to read. Written in easy English. Filled with thrill. A must read book for fantasy lover.❤️
