He is also recognised for a five-decade long association in the Tamil film industry and has written over 15,000 songs. He acted in a number of films, including Sathya, Hey Ram, Paarthale Paravasam and Poikkal Kudhirai. He was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 2007.

An excellent rendition of mahabharat in poetic form. Divided into three parts, I would call this work a significant one in Tamil literature that shouldn’t be ignored at any cost. The first part starts with the story of Yayati & Devayani and jumps to the story of Sathyavati, Santhanu & Ganga. The birth of Devaviratan and the questioning of Ganga which spared Bhishma’s life is rendered too poetically.
எஞ்சியிருக்கும் இவன் நம் எட்டாம் பிள்ளை;
இவன் புகழை மிஞ்ச மனிதன் மண்மிசை இல்லை.
இன்று என்னுடன் இவனை இட்டு செல்வேன் -
வளர்ந்தப்பின் உன்னிடம் இவனை நான் விட்டு செல்வேன்,
வானதி மறைந்தாள் மதலையோடு;
காவலன் நின்றான் கவலையோடு.
Santhanu falls deeply in love with the fisher-woman Sathyavati & to satisfy the greed of over-ambitious Sathyavati, Devavirata pronounces a terrible oath which turns the course of the story.

பூத உடல் வேகும் வரையில்
பூண்டு நிற்பேன் பிரமசரியம்.
பேண மாட்டேன் பெண்ணின் பிரியம்.
Bhishma goes to Kashi to fetch brides for his step-brother Vichithravirya. The beauty of the princesses (Amba, Ambalikka, Ambika) are described rhythmically. The story of Amba literally brings tears to eyes.
அம்பையின் அந்தரங்கம் அறிந்து
அவளை சால்வனிடம் அனுப்பினான்.
அழகு மயில் அம்பை நினைத்தாள் - "அன்பு என்றும் தோற்பதில்லை என்று".
சௌபல தேசத்து சால்வன் நினைத்தான் - "அம்பை வந்தால் ஏற்பதில்லை என்று".
Shaalva rejects Amba & she goes back to Bhisma forcing him to marry her.
இன்று நீ இன்னொருவன் வேட்டையாடிய இறைச்சி.
அதை எடுத்துன்பது இகழ்ச்சி.
போரில் என்னை புரம்கண்டான்.
தேரில் உன்னை தட்டிச்சென்றான்.
பீஷ்மனிடமே செல்; உன்னை மணம்புரிய சொல்.
அம்பை அங்கும் இங்குமாய் அல்லாடினாள். ஆறு ஆண்டுகள் மன்றாடினாள்.
Defeated and dejected, Amba decides to die after making an oath that she’ll kill Bhishma.
'இனி மனம் முக்கியமல்ல. மகாநதி மைந்தனின் பிணம் முக்கியம்' என்று பிரதிஞ்ஞை கொண்டாள். பாஞ்சாலத்தில் பிறந்தாள்.
சிக்கண்டி வசம் சந்தனு மகனின் உயிர் என எமன் உயில் எழுதினான்.
Vichtravirya dies without producing any offsprings and Sathyavati calls her son Vyasa to perform Niyoga on Ambika & Ambalika. The sons of Vichitravirya are considered the rightful heirs to the throne.

வெவ்வேறு தினங்களில் வேர்விட்டு வெளிவந்தன.
இருட்டிய திருட்டியோடு அம்பிகை ஈன்றேடுத்தவன் - திரிதராஷ்திரன் என்றும்,
பூண்டுநிறம் பூண்டு அம்பாலிகை வயிற்றில் பிறந்தவனை - பாண்டு என்றும்,
அடிமைப்பெண் மடியில் சதுரன் என சகம்மெச்சப் பிறந்தவன் - விதுரன் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டனர்.
Bhishma brings bride for his step-son Dhiridrastra from Gandhaar. Paralleled to this, Paandu holds Kunthi’s hand in the suyamvar conducted by Kuntibojan. Paandu marries Maathirai of Mathira raajya abiding the request of Mathira King. Crowned Pandu goes to forest with his two wives and there in the forest he kills Rishi Kindaman & his wife. Kindaman curses Pandu to perish the moment he gets close to any woman with cupidity. Pandu decides to go to forest and Dhiridrastran has been crowned. Then comes the birth of Yudhistir & Duryodhan.

வழங்கினான் ஒரு பாலன்.
பாண்டுவின் பர்ணசாலையில்
தடுக்கில் கிடக்கும் தங்க விக்ரகம்
குந்தியின் வழியே - அவள் உந்தியின் வழியே
புறம் வந்த அறம்.
ராவும் பகலும் பாவங்களை அராவும் அரம்.
Not just Yudhistir's birth, the birth of the Pandavas are described well. Every finite description about Durvasa's boon to Kunti made me wonder the choice of words Vaali had used. Yes, Karna's birth is also explained poetically and am not spoiling the fun, except revealing the following lines that spared Kunti from the waggling tongues.
அவளை அண்டக்கூடாது அபவாதம்
என்று ரவி செய்தான் ரசவாதம்.
ஊர் வாய்க்கு பயந்து -மகவை
நீர்வாயில் சேர்த்தாள் குந்தி -
மீண்டும் கன்னியான சாமந்தி.
Vyasaa helps gandhaari by giving life to her 100 children. The birth of Duryodhan & his brothers are described as follows.
ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் ஒவ்வொரு குடம் வெடிக்க..
ஒவ்வொரு குடத்திலும் ஒவ்வொரு பிள்ளை விழிக்க..
மொத்த ஆண் மகவு நூறானது... காந்தாரியின் சித்தம் ஆனந்த ஆறானது.
Duryodhan’s birth is followed by bad omens across Hastinapur. Vidhur advices Dhiridrastran to get rid of Duryodhan and Dhiridrastran denies it for the love he had for his first-born. Vidhur's warning echoed in my ears even after the completion of the book.
தலைப்பில்லை தமக்கு
தலைதாழ்வு தரும்பிள்ளை..
தலைமுறைக்கு தகாத பிள்ளை.
தலைமுழுக தகுந்த பிள்ளை.
நூறில் ஒன்று போகும்;
தகப்பன் என்று ஒட்டி உறவாட தொண்ணூற்றி ஒன்பது போதும்.
பின்னாளில் இப்பிள்ளையால் இக்குலம் மாயும். போர் மூளும்.
The Pandavas & Kauravas shares cat-rat relationship. Sakuni, Gandhaari’s brother, paves way for the distance to increase between the 100 Kauravas and 5 pandavas. I loved the way Sakuni’s character was described. I know this review is increasing in size, but I’m unable to hold myself back from penning down what Vaali had rendered rhythmically.

அவன் முக்கிய தொழில் மூளைசலவை.
மாச்சர்யம் கொண்டு மாற்றோரை
கவிழ்ப்பதில் தீட்சன்யமானவன்.

ஆச்சர்யமானவன்.
அவன் கவருக்கு தாயமும் தவறு செய்யாது.
எண்ணிய எண் எண்ணியப்படி விழும் பொய்யாது.
சூதாடுவதிலும்
சூது வைத்து வாதாடுவதிலும்
அவன் போல் வராது அகடவிகடம்.
இப்பாவி அக்குளில் சிக்கி
ஆடுகின்ற அப்பாவி தான் துரியோதனன்.
உடல் விட்டாவி பிரிந்தாலும் மாமன்
விரலசையாது விடமாட்டான் கொட்டாவி.
விதி அமைத்து வைத்த தீய பந்தம்..
இவன் துரியனை பொசுக்க வந்த தீப்பந்தம்.
As we know, the story progresses with Arjuna becoming the best warrior prince while the others learn their basics neatly from Dhronachrayar. The Ekalaiva incident, Panjaala war, Vaaranavadham Lac palace are all well drafted. Hidimbi’s love for Bheem & Gatotkacha’s birth are too romantic.
Once again, vaali scores with the birth of Drishdaduiman & Panjaali. The disguised Paandavas are directed by Vyaasa from Ekachakkara Puram to Kaampilyam to marry Paanjali.
நெருப்பில் எழுந்தது நெருப்பு.
அந்நெருப்பு ஏற்ற நிறம் கருப்பு.
அந்த பத்தினி நெருப்பின் பெயர் பாஞ்சாலி.
அவள் தீயரை தீய்க்க பிறந்த திரிசூலி.
Paying heeds to the words of Krishna, Durupad arranges for Panjaali’s suyamvar where only Arjun can win with his archery skills. The kings assembled in the hall of Suyamvar are fascinated by the beauty of the fire-born princess Panjaali.
அங்கிருந்த ஆசை நெஞ்சங்கள் துருபதனை
போற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தன.
மழை வில்லை
மகளாய் பெற்றதற்காக.
அதே நெஞ்சங்கள் தூற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தன..
மழை வில்லைபெற மகாவில்லை
விலையை வைத்ததற்காக.
The first part ends with Dananjeya Arjun winning the contest and Pandaavas getting married to Draupati. Duryodhan disheartened knowing that the Pandavas are alive returns to Hastinapur dejectedly and agrees in sharing Kaandavaprastam with Pandavas.
Interesting, lovely narration kept me hooked to the book. This book was beyond what I expected. Hoping forward to reading Draupadi’s vastraharan & the war in Vaali’s ever mind-lingering poetic rendition in the sequels.

இந்திரப் பிரஸ்தம் உருவாவதோடு முதல் பாகம் முடிவுறுகிறது. பல வருடங்கள் கழித்து எதுகை மோனையுடன் தமிழ் படிப்பது பிடித்திருந்தது. விஜய் டிவியில் ஒளிபரப்பான மகாபாரதத்திற்கும் இதற்கும் சில வித்தியாசங்கள். மற்றபடி கவிதையாக படித்தது புதிய அனுபவத்தை தந்தது.
