As a late diagnosed AuDHD/OCD adult, she had trouble assimilating most of her life. Reading and writing became a form of escapism, and now she uses it to try and make reality a better place. This was a fun novella. The individual components worked for me, the visions, the dream sequences, but I think the story would have benefited from a longer page count to clear up some possible initial confusion.

What I did love was the concept: a camp for the privileged, and a Hunger Games style worldview. There's a lot of sharp commentary packed into this story and I enjoyed it.

Jeeeeeesus. This was a crazy dark and necessary book. I burned through it, partially because I was ready to see how the concept was continued. I loved the original story and it definitely deserves the expansion. The world created here is the richest in ET’s work thus far. I can’t wait to see what is next, as always!

Here were my thoughts before, during, and after reading Sacred Sins. Spoilers ahead!

Before Reading:

I didn’t love A Deadly Sin, the short story this novella was based on. I actually gave it 2 stars because it was very confusing to me. So I’m eager to read Sacred Sins because I hope it offers answers for my many questions. I did in fact LOVE LOVE LOVE several other stories in Good For Her, so I already know I enjoy this author’s work in general. I’m excited to dive in!

Chapter 1:

-I like that the writing style is clear, easy to read, and enjoyable.

-I like that the author catches us up on what happened in A Deadly Sin. That being said, you don’t need to have read the short story, but it does help add to the atmosphere and world building so I’d recommend it!

-The butchering and skinning scene in the walk-in freezer was chilling, especially with how normal Bella acted about it all. I loved it!

-The shit s’more was disgusting, but Bella handled it like a total badass!

Chapter 2:

-It’s interesting that so many campers choose to come back every year. I wonder if they keep forgetting the treasure hunt?

Chapter 3:

-“OOOO’Reilley’s” LMAO!!!!

-“Walk away from me now.” YES! TELL HIM, GIRL!

Chapter 4:

-This chapter sort of confused me, because of the sudden shift to seeing body parts. Jimena also says weird stuff that I don’t understand.

Chapter 5

-The shower scene was so creepy!

-Fuck Jerry, what a creep. I love that Bella keeps calling him out!

Chapter 6

-I love the inclusion of the dreams. They add a lot of interest and mystery!

Chapter 7

-This chapter made no sense to me. I was lost the entire time, especially towards the end. I have no idea what happened. But that’s probably a me problem tbh, my brain is nice and smooooth sometimes haha.

Chapter 8

-The reveal with the ice shed makes so much sense now!

-Why do Jimena and Bella want MORE kids to die????

-Love the brutality!

-Is Jimena God????

-Bringing in the real life horror of ICE and deportation was a great idea. Poor Ayanna.

After Reading:

Overall, I liked this novella (4 stars)! I do believe that it could’ve benefited from maybe being a little longer in order to flesh out some of the ideas and maybe provide more answers, especially when it comes to the magic of the camp and who Jimena is. I feel like I still have a lot of questions, but maybe we’re not supposed to know all the answers! Maybe the mystery is part of the fun! And Sacred Sins WAS definitely fun to read! I do in fact recommend it, as well as E.T.’s other work!

I will definitely continue reading this very talented author’s work in the future!

✰ Mother nature knew. This deadly tradition has apparently been around for almost two centuries, so I’m not surprised the atmosphere carried the muscle memory of barbarity ✰

This was SO much fun. It’s a classic 79 pages, absolutely no time wasted, “just hand me the gore” situation and I am HERE FOR IT.

I’ve always been a sucker for horror about corruption through money, so throwing wealthy people, cannibalism and a whole lot of splatter into the mix? Hello??? You have my attention.

Although, there were definitely a few moments where I was left thinking, girl… there are several pieces of this puzzle currently on the floor.

I’m not sure if I was meant to read “A Deadly Sin”first (despite being told I didn’t need to) to get those answers or if it’s to be continued 👀 But hey-ho, despite a few little holes I had a great time!

It’s short, nasty, gory and incredibly easy to fly through. If you fancy a quick splatterpunk read that doesn’t waste a single page, I’d absolutely recommend this one!

I enjoyed some parts of this story but I was also confused a lot on what was actually happening and why. I thought the gruesome parts were excellent very in depth and quite horrific. I didn't fully understand how the camp works and who the 2 main characters actually are and why they are actually so special, I think I may need to read it again at a later date and see.

A Sacred Sin by E.T. is a phenomenal sequel to her short story “A Deadly Sin” featured in her previous collection “Good For Her”. A Deadly Sin was actually one of my favorite stories told in the collection, so I am so happy that it got a sequel! Two years after the events of A Deadly Sin, we are brought back to Bella as she returns to camp, this time as a counselor. Seeing the gory and gruesome jobs they must do as they prepare for the campers’ arrival. E.T. does a terrific job showing off the mental toll that Bella is dealing with, as well as constantly having you question what is truly going on at the camp.

The way E.T writes poetic justice mixed with gore and current deportation nightmares is immaculate. The author has managed to keep her splatterpunk edge while throwing in real world issues seamlessly.

The book follows Bella who is a non legacy counsellor at an all rich summer camp after competing for the position and essentially singing herself up for years of camp loyalty. But in return she earns protection for herself and her mum.

But we soon learn that not everything is as it seems at this camp and the carefree activities and participants eventually turn into Monsters who will do anything to keep the riches and continue the legacy. Even if it means potentially hurting and snacking on their best friend.

Its gruesome, honest, eye opening and most definitely frightening.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this as part of Indietron! All opinions are my own, and I am writing this review voluntarily.

This book was SO fun. The play on perception of the working class vs. rich was delightfully done. Am I confused on some things after reading it? Absolutely. But did I enjoy every second? Abso-fucking-lutely. The freezer ice, the dinners…. I could not guess what was real and what was hallucination. The story unraveled in such an interesting way, with the time skips popping up then going to the past. The way plot twist details were revealed had me on the edge of my seat for every page. I genuinely can’t get over the Friday feasts, that idea will definitely be sticking with me for a while.

If you’re looking for something different with a summer-camp vibe, pick this one up! My only regret is not reading it sooner.

Warfare on a whole different level, and it’s at summer camp! You thought it was hard fitting in before? Maybe you shouldn’t. You thought it was tough making friends? Maybe it’s just best to keep enemies close. For some it’s a legacy, for others its become ultimate survival and their ticket out of the daily problems just trying to live and survive in such a hateful judging world. I would argue this is a true “Hunger Games ” hell even a better telling of how a world like that would even work. Mixed with slasher camp, questions of ones own self-worth, ability, and delusion. Follow our FMC as she is shown a new defiance of a blind tradition, rediscovering reality and what part she’s playing.

I'm afraid this wasn't for me. I really liked the premise - summer camp from hell, cannibalism, dystopian world, kids fighting for their lives etc. But I just could not get on with the writing style. I don't know exactly what it was but I was having to re-read sentences a lot because I wasn't following them. I felt totally confused at times as to what was going on and I found the story became disjointed because of this. This is totally a "me" problem I think, as this book has some brilliant reviews, so please don't be put off by my thoughts.

ET wrote a troubling tale of ambition, Avarice and that fog that overtakes one, their pursuit to achieve more. The things that many will overlook on their path to attaining everything they've wished for. It is so well displayed in Sacred Sins, and no matter how much you're willing to sacrifice whether internally or externally, those sins surely add up even if every dream does come true at the end. I quite liked this book, the interwoven dream sequences and questions concerning morality in a place where everyone is evil.

This was like a combination of a summer camp slasher horror and a creepy cult horror with added twists. I liked that it gave a lot of information about what was going on from the start while still being mysterious and dropping more information along the way. I liked the writing style. It was detailed and easy to read at the same time. I think the pacing was good and keeping it short was a good call. I feel like this is the kind of thing I could have seen being an episode of American Horror Stories.

Really interesting story but I got lost in some of the timelines and what was actually happening haha.

The epic amounts of carnage were great but the paranormal aspect confused me. What was "real" and what was in her mind.

Gosh I felt like this book was quite tough to follow. Many times I was a little confused of what was happening but at the same time it also packed a punch with meaning behind it.

I only just found out that it’s a sequel so maybe thats why I was a little confused by it. All in all, it’s a fun little hunger games style novella with a sprinkle of cannibalism as the special ingredient.

This is brutal, but damn was it good.

I do think the reader should familiarize themselves with the character Bella by reading the short story “A Deadly Sin” first, found from the authors splatter collection titled Good For Her. It’ll add insight into this character’s mindset and growth.

While this is dark, heavy, and not indented for those who don’t do well with gore, I love how the story tackles the notion of money being the route of all evil, and turning a blind eye to corruption when welcomed to the elite class.

Truly felt I was reading a bookish blend of The Hunger Games and Tender is the Flesh, and I say that in the most respectful of ways.

This story was so engaging, I just had to read it all in one sitting! There was so much going on (so many little things) that I'm sure I missed some, but even still, WOW!

This book is a part 2 from a short story that you definitely do NOT need to read as a precursor. The story jumps right in, and you piece together everything fairly quickly.

Enter our FMC. She'll do what it takes to keep her and her mother safe in this world. Most of us can relate to that. In this society, the best way to do that as someone of her background is to attend Summer Camp! This isn't just any summer camp! Many kids/teens/young adults from prominent families attend this camp knowing one thing, on the last day, someone will be dead. The social structure behind this reality is intriguing, if I'm being honest. I would definitely read more from this universe if the author decides to delve deeper in the future. Our FMC does not have an elite background but was "lucky" enough to be selected to participate. If she survives, she and her mother will always be safe! A very enticing prize, to say the least!

But what are these competitions really for? What are the kids truly forced to do? Why is everyone so unqestioningly compliant with the rules? Who is cooking the meals? Can our FMC do what it takes to survive?

There were some devastatingly realistic notions in this story that can run a kind of "parallel" to our own modern society. Of course, it is not the same, but the similarities are chilling. That's what I found the most terrifying about this story. This was an amazing page turner, and I had enough violence to satiate my cravings while also unraveling a deeper plot to the story! I rarely give out 5 stars, but I definitely see myself reading this book again as well as recommending it. 5 stars! Bravo! Well done!

Apparently, summer camp is supposed to build character. This one is trying to destroy yours. 😂🔪

Bella has fought her way to becoming a head counselor at a camp for the wealthy, which sounds glamorous until you discover the campers have a bit of a cannibalistic cult problem.

You know… normal summer camp stuff.

Then a mysterious new girl shows up, Bella’s nightmares start getting worse, and the camp’s secrets begin crawling out of the shadows. What starts as a disturbing summer quickly turns into a full blown descent into rage, nightmares, violence, and absolute chaos.

And Sacred Sins does not appear interested in politely knocking before entering the horror department.

This is splatterpunk that embraces the ugly. It’s disturbing, graphic, unpredictable, and completely unafraid to make you uncomfortable. The atmosphere has that perfect combination of “something is very wrong here” and “OH… THAT’S MUCH WORSE THAN I THOUGHT.”

I also appreciated that the book gives us a protagonist who isn’t simply standing around waiting for the horror to happen to her. Bella is dealing with her own demons while trying to figure out what the hell is actually happening at this camp.

'Sacred Sins' is a continuation of camp counselor Bella's story from E.T.'s previous short story 'A Deadly Sin'. I highly recommend reading 'A Deadly Sin' as it not only provides obvious exposition and fleshes out the history and world more, but we get to see the consequences and rewards of Bella's choices during her first summer at camp.

Not only was it fun to see Bella's growth, but also the author's. E.T. is a writer to watch in the horror genre. Each of her releases feels more and more like an author finding their voice, and delivering powerful messages in the process.

I was blessed to recieve an early copy of 'Sacred Sins' and thoroughly enjoyed my read. This novella feels like another piece in a brutal, unforgiving narrative world of choices, greed, and power. I hope we haven't seen the last of Bella or the gloriously posh summer camp of uncompromising violence!

ARC REVIEW: I had the pleasure of reading ET’s book “good for her” and one of my favorite short stories in that book was “A Deadly Sin”. Thankfully, ET blessed us with a standalone continuation of that universe in “Sacred Sins”. One of my favorite parts about her newest novel is how it really makes the reader think. She leaves topics open to interpretation for the reader to speculate on and determine its meaning. ET does a wonderful job of weaving a story of survival of the fittest, issues like classism, racism, and the vileness that can be created by the ultra-elite. I appreciate the sprinklings of Spanish throughout the novel and its cultural significance, especially as a Latina myself.

Not enough gore or violence for Splatterpunk. The plot felt incomplete and very confusing, I wish I had more answers.

I was about to DNF this book because I felt very confused by the story, and was totally lost at times. It makes it very difficult to get involved in a story, when you have no idea what is happening.

I wish the story had less plot holes, and the author gave us more background on the camp, who Jimena is, and the lady who announces the treasure hunt. Who controls the camp?

I also would have hoped for more gore. I would consider this novella terribly light on the gore and violence side for a splatterpunk work.

The premise of this book was so good. I was intrigued from the get-go.
This was literally, the summer camp from hell!
Bella is the lead camp counsellor, a moniker she earned. Now, how she got that post, is all part of the ride... a gore ridden one at that!
Who or what is Jimena??
Whilst reading, especially with the weird reality, my mind kept going to purgatory. It's like, they are in an endless loop of horror!!
Just a thought.
All in all, a good read. It just got confusing at times; for me anyway. I would have liked more history of the camp, and less ambiguity. However, I can see how this adds to the mystery.

I read "Sacred Sins" for #indietron. This was not my thing, but I do like the writing style a lot! I would definitely read more from this author. I'm just a bit done with the whole Hunger Games/survival trope, where the protagonist knows every style of martial arts, can probably lift double their body weight and is also the best survivalist. It makes it really hard for me to find something relatable in the characters. That’s just a personal preference, though! I really liked the pacing and writing - that's why I really hesitated between three and four stars but ultimately went for three.

Well written splatterpunk horror in a summer camp. I really enjoyed this as it felt like a narrative on how far people are willing to go to get ahead and protect themself above all else.
The detail was great along with the dream sequences, which seem confusing at first, but they all tie in together by the end. The twist at the end, which we actually get glimpses of throughout the book without realizing, really threw me.

You can generally tell good writing when you're rooting for the main character/s, and that I did!

I absolutely DEVOURED this, no pun intended. I don’t even know how to begin to describe the going ons of this book without giving anything away but it felt like a gory little fever dream.
