Jeeeeeesus. This was a crazy dark and necessary book. I burned through it, partially because I was ready to see how the concept was continued. I loved the original story and it definitely deserves the expansion. The world created here is the richest in ET’s work thus far. I can’t wait to see what is next, as always!

✰ Mother nature knew. This deadly tradition has apparently been around for almost two centuries, so I’m not surprised the atmosphere carried the muscle memory of barbarity ✰

This was SO much fun. It’s a classic 79 pages, absolutely no time wasted, “just hand me the gore” situation and I am HERE FOR IT.

I’ve always been a sucker for horror about corruption through money, so throwing wealthy people, cannibalism and a whole lot of splatter into the mix? Hello??? You have my attention.

Although, there were definitely a few moments where I was left thinking, girl… there are several pieces of this puzzle currently on the floor.

I’m not sure if I was meant to read “A Deadly Sin”first (despite being told I didn’t need to) to get those answers or if it’s to be continued 👀 But hey-ho, despite a few little holes I had a great time!

It’s short, nasty, gory and incredibly easy to fly through. If you fancy a quick splatterpunk read that doesn’t waste a single page, I’d absolutely recommend this one!

A Sacred Sin by E.T. is a phenomenal sequel to her short story “A Deadly Sin” featured in her previous collection “Good For Her”. A Deadly Sin was actually one of my favorite stories told in the collection, so I am so happy that it got a sequel! Two years after the events of A Deadly Sin, we are brought back to Bella as she returns to camp, this time as a counselor. Seeing the gory and gruesome jobs they must do as they prepare for the campers’ arrival. E.T. does a terrific job showing off the mental toll that Bella is dealing with, as well as constantly having you question what is truly going on at the camp.

This is brutal, but damn was it good.

I do think the reader should familiarize themselves with the character Bella by reading the short story “A Deadly Sin” first, found from the authors splatter collection titled Good For Her. It’ll add insight into this character’s mindset and growth.

While this is dark, heavy, and not indented for those who don’t do well with gore, I love how the story tackles the notion of money being the route of all evil, and turning a blind eye to corruption when welcomed to the elite class.

Truly felt I was reading a bookish blend of The Hunger Games and Tender is the Flesh, and I say that in the most respectful of ways.

Apparently, summer camp is supposed to build character. This one is trying to destroy yours. 😂🔪

Bella has fought her way to becoming a head counselor at a camp for the wealthy, which sounds glamorous until you discover the campers have a bit of a cannibalistic cult problem.

You know… normal summer camp stuff.

Then a mysterious new girl shows up, Bella’s nightmares start getting worse, and the camp’s secrets begin crawling out of the shadows. What starts as a disturbing summer quickly turns into a full blown descent into rage, nightmares, violence, and absolute chaos.

And Sacred Sins does not appear interested in politely knocking before entering the horror department.

This is splatterpunk that embraces the ugly. It’s disturbing, graphic, unpredictable, and completely unafraid to make you uncomfortable. The atmosphere has that perfect combination of “something is very wrong here” and “OH… THAT’S MUCH WORSE THAN I THOUGHT.”

I also appreciated that the book gives us a protagonist who isn’t simply standing around waiting for the horror to happen to her. Bella is dealing with her own demons while trying to figure out what the hell is actually happening at this camp.

Here were my thoughts before, during, and after reading Sacred Sins. Spoilers ahead!

Before Reading:

I didn’t love A Deadly Sin, the short story this novella was based on. I actually gave it 2 stars because it was very confusing to me. So I’m eager to read Sacred Sins because I hope it offers answers for my many questions. I did in fact LOVE LOVE LOVE several other stories in Good For Her, so I already know I enjoy this author’s work in general. I’m excited to dive in!

Chapter 1:

-I like that the writing style is clear, easy to read, and enjoyable.

-I like that the author catches us up on what happened in A Deadly Sin. That being said, you don’t need to have read the short story, but it does help add to the atmosphere and world building so I’d recommend it!

-The butchering and skinning scene in the walk-in freezer was chilling, especially with how normal Bella acted about it all. I loved it!

-The shit s’more was disgusting, but Bella handled it like a total badass!

Chapter 2:

-It’s interesting that so many campers choose to come back every year. I wonder if they keep forgetting the treasure hunt?

Chapter 3:

-“OOOO’Reilley’s” LMAO!!!!

-“Walk away from me now.” YES! TELL HIM, GIRL!

Chapter 4:

-This chapter sort of confused me, because of the sudden shift to seeing body parts. Jimena also says weird stuff that I don’t understand.

Chapter 5

-The shower scene was so creepy!

-Fuck Jerry, what a creep. I love that Bella keeps calling him out!

Chapter 6

-I love the inclusion of the dreams. They add a lot of interest and mystery!

Chapter 7

-This chapter made no sense to me. I was lost the entire time, especially towards the end. I have no idea what happened. But that’s probably a me problem tbh, my brain is nice and smooooth sometimes haha.

Chapter 8

-The reveal with the ice shed makes so much sense now!

-Why do Jimena and Bella want MORE kids to die????

-Love the brutality!

Chapter 9

-Is Jimena God????

Chapter 10

-Bringing in the real life horror of ICE and deportation was a great idea. Poor Ayanna.

After Reading:

Overall, I liked this novella (4 stars)! I do believe that it could’ve benefited from maybe being a little longer in order to flesh out some of the ideas and maybe provide more answers, especially when it comes to the magic of the camp and who Jimena is. I feel like I still have a lot of questions, but maybe we’re not supposed to know all the answers! Maybe the mystery is part of the fun! And Sacred Sins WAS definitely fun to read! I do in fact recommend it, as well as E.T.’s other work!

I will definitely continue reading this very talented author’s work in the future!

This novella was everything I wanted and somehow more (4.25/5). If you read Good for Her also by E.T. then you'll recognize Bella and the camp from A Deadly Sin. After reading that story I was itching for more! Well it's not necessarily important to read Good for Her I would HIGLY advise that you do as some people and events that occur make this novella easier to understand. However it's not 100% necessary.

Bella was a bad a$$ in our introduction to her and remained one here. I also got a lot of questions answered that I had at the end of A Deadly Sin. Like...How/why did Bella end up at the camp? How does the camp actually work? Is Bella seeing things and possibly a little crazy? Why would you keep going back, especially to be a counselor? And many more.

I will say there were times when I was seriously questioning if Bella may be a more unreliable narrator than I believed (she wasn't). Especially when Jimena is thrown into the mix. I kept wondering wtf Jimena is/was...a demon, a God, the offspring of a humaniod cryptid? Or is it possible she's just a normal little girl, who like Bella can see things for what they actually are?

I highly recommend you check this book out. I loved the humor, gore and existential crisis we get to experience with Bella!

Two years after the events unfold in A Deadly Sin (short story found in the Good For Her: Splatterpunk Collection), Bella is going back to the ultra wealthy summer camp as a non-legacy counselor - and head counselor, at that. By becoming a counselor, she was guaranteed to get everything she ever wanted. But by securing a better life for her family, she knowingly walks into a nightmare every summer until after her 21st birthday. Knowing what will inevitably occur on the final day of camp during the annual Treasure Hunt, Bella is able to prepare and transition from her usual compassionate self into an impenetrable mental fortress - keeping other counselors and campers at an arm's length away as to not show any weaknesses. It's not like the wealthy campers would be helping her.

Events unfold as we meet camper, Jimena, another non-legacy. As Jimena slowly gets into Bella's head we are treated to one disorienting experience after another. The fog is cleared and what is revealed is nothing short of horrifying.

The surreal writing paired with the real world deportation fears is incredible. E.T. continues to give "eat the rich" a whole new meaning.

This is the first I’ve read from E. T. and I’m definitely gonna be looking for more! In this novella, Bella is a camp counselor at a nightmare summer camp for the ultra-wealthy. She just needs to return until she turns 21, and she’ll have everything she ever wanted--including security for her family. As the story unfolds, we’re gradually given insight into what’s going on behind the scenes. It’s surreal, disorienting, and gory in the best way.

This novella asks us to consider what we’re willing to do not just to survive but to thrive in a system that is designed to hold us down. Would you turn a blind eye if it meant joining the ruling class? How do we judge the ones that do? This is a gloriously gruesome, eye-opening, and super smart dive into what it really means to eat the rich before they eat you. Highly highly recommend!

The way E.T writes poetic justice mixed with gore and current deportation nightmares is immaculate. The author has managed to keep her splatterpunk edge while throwing in real world issues seamlessly.

The book follows Bella who is a non legacy counsellor at an all rich summer camp after competing for the position and essentially singing herself up for years of camp loyalty. But in return she earns protection for herself and her mum.

But we soon learn that not everything is as it seems at this camp and the carefree activities and participants eventually turn into Monsters who will do anything to keep the riches and continue the legacy. Even if it means potentially hurting and snacking on their best friend.

Its gruesome, honest, eye opening and most definitely frightening.

How far would you go to avenge and protect your people?

This novella is a continuation of the short story “A Deadly Sin” from the book “Good for Her”. We follow FMC Bella through another year at summer camp. Campers must win a game on their final day at camp or risk losing it all, their life included. But this summer camp is a bit different. With Bella’s eyes being opened thanks to a new camper, Jimena, she is facing truths about the camp that are hard to bear. Will she still stop at nothing to win?

Bella is a messed up FMC but I loved this novella! It was such a fast paced read and the length of it was perfect. It kept me entertained and wanting to know more throughout the novel. While reading, I could so picture this being a movie! The ending was chefs kiss. It’s a perfect end of summer read. Definitely add to your TBR for August 29th!

Sacred Sins is a splatterpunk novella that follows Bella, a girl who works as a camp counselor at a cannibalistic cult-kinda-place where they hold an annual competition that always ends in blood, and the weird new girl, Jimena, messes up the balance. Think of Hunger Games x Playground, and make everyone batshit crazy, bloodthirsty, and more than happy to mutilate someone - regardless of age. This one is disgustingly visceral with the descriptions of how the "campers" treat each other. Bella's a psycho, but I also think that's because of this weird ass camp. Thankfully there's no animal abuse or sexual assault, BUT it involves kids being killed in horrific ways, also, lots and lots of suicide, bodily fuilds, and of course gore. Check your trigger warnings :)

This is a story of a different type of sleep away camp. One that I hope to never go to.
A camp full of rich kids and horrific horrors. Bella is excited to be a camp counselor this year, but will she survive another summer?
The kids are made to compete on the last day of camp for the award of the golden treasure. Every year there is always one unlucky camper without the treasure though.

I was lucky to get an arc of this exciting and crazy book!! I couldn’t put it down!
This is my first read from this author and I can’t wait to read her other stories!!

I went into this completely blind, just agreeing to take an ARC after a short conversation, and holy crap, I am glad I did.

I was instantly sucked into the world ET created and immersed behind her characters. Isabella was relatable and confident and when that confidence gets shaken, it leads the story down a path that grips the reader until the end.

ET's voice shines through the narrative, keeping the intrigue and mystery just out of reach, leaving one wanting more until they get it. And that ending? This is an absolute must-read for the genre.

Summer camp is supposed to be about fresh air and bonfire nights. But for Bella, signing years of her life away to secure her spot meant walking straight into a brutal nightmare. As a non legacy counselor, she quickly learns that the wealthy participants will stop at nothing to protect their status, even if it means turning on each other.

The depraved mind games in this story are so unsettling and gruesome in the best possible way. E.T. is such an incredible storyteller, and this one had me hooked right from the start. I couldn’t put it down.

This is not only a compelling and fun read filled with violence and death, it is a very important commentary on how far some are willing to go to get ahead. Gore streaked humanity will be laid bare, while the decision is made on where exactly the line between us and them is drawn. If you’re a fan of the genre, definitely look for the little Easter eggs, check your triggers, and pack your bags for camp with Sacred Sins.

What a fun read! I was rooting for Bella the whole time. I liked how her character developed from “A Deadly Sin”. I did find Bella’s dreams/nightmares and the spooky scenes to be effective. Fantastic writing style. I am rating this 3 stars because the story left some questions unanswered. Who was Jimena? Who was that lady that announces the start of the game? How was she still alive? Maybe I was supposed to make my own conclusions, but I would have liked to know more.

Sacred Sins is a sequel to one of the short stories in "Good for Her", and I loved every page of it. It was interesting to read how our MC's perspective has changed in the two years as a camp counselor, and the horrors that happen behind the scenes of the camp.

The reveals and the symbolism felt very real, especially in our current political climate. Thank you to E.T again for the ARC, her writing is always fun to read!

This is a follow on novella from “A Deadly Sin” in the “Good For Her” anthology! It follows Bella through this seasons camp as a counsellor. The camp isn’t what it seems, on the surface is it light and carefree, but behind the scenes and on the last day, it turns to savagery and carnage! It is gruesome and eye opening in all the best ways! The writing style builds for a suspenseful read, perfect for those who love splatterpunk horrors!

I came for the extreme horror and stayed for the story underneath it. Sacred Sins is graphic, relentless, and genuinely upsetting at times, but it also has much more to say than shock value alone. If you enjoy horror that slowly reveals the ugliness lurking beneath a seemingly normal tradition, and if The Lottery left an impression on you, this is well worth picking up.

If you've read the Good For Her anthology and came across the short story A Deadly Sin, you already know this author doesn't play around. Sacred Sins is an expansion of that world and honestly it's everything I wanted and more.

Bella is a counselor returning to Whisper Ridge Camp, trying her best to keep her head down and ignore the deeply disturbing things happening around her. Then a new girl shows up who seems to know far too much, and everything Bella has been suppressing starts to unravel fast.

The gore in this one is not for the faint of heart and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. That willingness to go all the way with the darkness is exactly what I love about E.T.'s writing. Nothing feels gratuitous because it all serves the story and the rage underneath it.

This is splatterpunk at its most unapologetic and I am here for every second of it. As someone who has been following E.T.'s work for a while now, it's been so cool watching her grow as a writer.
