What would you do if a complete stranger (who looks kind of familiar) walked up to you and told you that you were about to make the biggest mistake of your life? That is exactly what happens to Michael Richards in this short story from Terry Kerr.

Michael is twenty-two and has just had a truly frightening incident. He was drunk and almost kissed one of his mates. What was up with that? He can’t be gay….he is a good Catholic boy…ok a good lapsed Catholic boy, but it is all the same correct?

When we meet him, he is in North Wales gazing out onto the Irish Sea wishing he were dead. But not in a suicidal way (see the Catholic comment above). He just wishes something would happen to put him out of his misery so he doesn’t have to have these complicated thoughts.

He gets his answer in the form of the strangely familiar man who seems to know everything about him and his decision.

I really enjoyed this short story. I recommend it to anyone who has ever thought, I wish I knew then what I know now. It was an entertaining read, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the anthology that it is contained in!

A good short story.

This is a short but very interesting read that grabbed my interest from the first page.
I've never read any of Tony Kerr's books before because I don't like horror stories or horror movie. This wasn't a horror story, so I decided to give it a go, and I'm glad I did. An enjoyable read. Five stars!

A Riveting Short Read

Author Terry Kerr’s ‘Anything or Nothing’ is a riveting short read with depth of character and deep insight. In the beginning of the story, protagonist, Michael Richards, wishes himself dead because he cannot condone his attraction to Tony in conjunction with the Catholic Church’s condemnation of homosexuality.

Then, he meets his future self in a café where meaningful conversation flows. Most importantly, the here-and-now, twenty-two-year old Michael Richards comes to the realization he is the most bigoted of all for having denied his true nature by pulling the blinds down on his soul and stopped living.

Terry Kerr is a tour de writing force in conveying inner conflict with candor through the medium of a concise story with scope and sensitivity.

Mike is confused about his sexual orientation and it makes him depressed. Being on the edge of suicide, he met a mysterious stranger in the pub. Is it only his imaginary friend or a ghost? A great story with a supernatural element. I wish it was longer

Mike is a Catholic boy who isn’t suicidal, no because that’s a sin, but who would be glad if someone killed him. Anything to alleviate the guilt he feels about wanting to kiss Tony. He can’t be gay, can’t be. It takes a visit from an oddly familiar stranger to make him realize that the mistake he is on the verge of making is fixable and life changing.
