Painted Wind #3

Song of the Khan

Rate this book
What if saving your kingdom cost your true love's soul?

Former gravedigger Rigan North is used to being surrounded by death and loss, but her husband's capture by an enemy king brings her and the rebellion she's inspired to breaking point. Corcoran's only hope for surviving King Radek's dungeons is his treacherous magice mother. But Lady Jhoselyn and Radek both want Rigan dead-if the Shro Khan don't claim her soul first.

Now king regent, Soren fights to hold his failing kingdom together and protect those he cares about from the monsters who unexpectedly reversed his curse. But the price to save Jardia and banish his curse permanently is the life of the woman he loves, and even if she's willing to make that exchange, Soren most certainly isn't.

As the Twin Kingdoms descend into deeper darkness, Rigan, Isel, Corcoran, and Soren grapple with new revelations that they may not be the ones to save their home from destruction. Their only hope is the echoes of an ancient Song, the sole antidote to the Shro Khan's siren call...but to learn its notes will require conquering the weakness at the very heart of their souls.

Christy Award winning author Jasmine’s writing dream began with the anthology of zoo animals she painstakingly wrote and illustrated at age five, to rather limited acclaim. Thankfully, her writing (but not her drawing) has improved since then. She is originally a clinically-trained psychologist but no, she cannot read your mind. When she isn’t killing defenseless house plants, Jasmine enjoys devouring books, dabbling in floristry, playing the piano, eating peanut butter out of the jar, and wishing it rained more often. Jasmine is married to David, and together with their young daughter they make their home a couple of hours north of Sydney, Australia, where they live to satisfy the every whim of their ginger overlord cat, Simba.

I was an arc reader for this book, as I have been for several of Fischer's books. (And getting the fine print taken care of--all opinions are my own, and I was not required to write a review.)

I am a fan of Fischer's other books, particularly The Nightingale Trilogy and The Darcentaria Duology. I also consider her an auto-buy author and have recommended her books to many. With that said, I unfortunately must say that I have a major concern regarding this series and cannot give this book a high rating because of it.

I still love these characters, and I love the overall plotline. I also thought Fischer did a great job of probing the reality that sometimes God says "no" to our requests, but that He is never capricious in doing so.

However, while I am a huge fan of Christian fantasy, the story elements that refer to God must stay "orthodox" and not cross lines in terms of theology and foundational doctrines. Sadly, I believe Fischer crosses that line with this series beginning at the very end of book two and continuing throughout book three. Furthermore, it seems as though book four's focus is going to be centered on this error.😭

Believe me, I am not happy to have to be the party pooper here. I wish I could overlook it, but it strikes deep within me that the should not be altered to fit into a romance plotline of a Christian fantasy. This isn't a

I hope that book 4 will prove me wrong, and if it does, I will come back here and change my rating and review. I just don't see how it could be anything but what I mentioned above in the spoiler.😭 I would love to be proven wrong so I can continue to unreservedly recommend Fischer's books!

Wow, wow, wow. Another fabulous J.J. Fischer book. I am in awe of the allegorical themes woven in, and very very curious to see how the last book concludes the series. I can’t see how one more book will be enough to tie everything off, but I’m very excited. These characters are so vivid and dear, and I am so nervous to see how their stories will end!

Thank you to the author for the ARC- this in no way impacts my review!

Fascinating third book in the series

I’ve read many J.J. Fischer books and I continue to be impressed by her creativity. Painted Wind may be her most fantastical series so far, and yet it’s more about human emotions, struggles, and choices than anything beyond the natural.

At its heart, this is a book about pride. Each main character has the choice to set aside their stubbornness, biases, or earthly accolades. Whether they do makes all the difference.

I love that Fischer isn’t afraid to show love stories beyond the wedding. Her handling of marriage in this book, specifically what it looks like to forgive and move forward after hurt, was beautiful.

I also loved the bronze! The way the people’s relationship with the protective metal has shifted is an excellent picture of human nature and a great biblical parallel. On that note, I am very curious with how a certain semi-biblical plot line will play out in book four. If I didn’t trust the author so much, I’d be worried.

Without giving spoilers, I can say I have never read a mid-series book that takes this particular route. I am more eager than ever to read book four!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to provide a review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

I have been waiting for this book since the moment I read the last word on book two. One of the worst cliffhangers ever! When this ARC copy hit my email I had to drop everything and start reading immediately!

I was not disappointed for my wait, which felt like years but totally was not. I am not a person who reads by chapters I read until I get to a good place to pause the story. The Song Of The Kahn does not have any good places to stop! If I did not have to feed my family I would have read this in one sitting. Now that I am done I wish I could read it again. Someday when I buy shelf trophies of them and paint the books I will read the whole series through agian.

J. J. Fischer has become a favorite author for me. Everything I have read has such a depth of characters and the world building is excellent. I really want bookmarks with the animals in The Twin Kingdoms.

This third book in the Painted Wind series is a little darker than the previous two. Dark in a darkness before the dawn sort of way, the final book in the series is building to be the dawn. There is so much I love in this book I could go on and on! But most of it would be spoilers.... so I will have to try to contain myself. The Kahn are very evil in the true sense of the word. I have zero tolerance for anything to do with kids and there is a couple points where my heart dropped, nothing is descriptive. The sad truth is evil always targets the young. This book reflects many truths so it only makes sense this would be apart of the darkness. It is not all darkness, the light is still there and still shines, shining brightly and standing firm against the Kahn.

The characters really shine in this series. A book from four POVs can easily become confusing but Fischer makes it look easy. The character growth is a central part of the books. The characters struggles are not light and feel very real. You want to cheer for them when their character grows. Or pulls out hero moves in a high stakes sword weilding battle.

The romance is completely clean but it is by no means light. It is deep and all consuming, sacrificial love. I could not put this down, at the same time I wanted to make sure when I did have time to read I could pay attention and really savor the story. I already can not wait for book four! And not just because the ending ripped out my heart!

The author generously gifted a copy of the book to my ever growing horde of books taking over my house. My opinions, like my book horde, are large, uncontrollable, and all mine!

Song of the Khan by J.J. Fischer is an awesome third book of the Painted Wind series. I had a bit of trouble getting into it at first, but that was only because I was struggling to remember who everybody was, where we had left them all at the end of the last book, and what exactly was going on. As I continued in the story, my memory was constantly being jogged and I was sucked deeper into the world of the twin kingdoms.

The story is told from multiple points of view, the main ones being Rigan and Corcoran, and Isel and Soren. There are so many awesome characters surrounding the main characters, plus downright evil and traitorous characters trying to bring them down on multiple fronts.

The story has grown darker, starting with the first chapter, and it continued to grow darker still. There is war and prophecy, death and new life, and faith in the Divine Will. There are the two main love stories, plus other couples and families who become beloved as well. There are creatures of evil and of good. Plus fantastical fantasy creatures that come to the aid of our heroes. Including one that I didn't quite see coming until it was revealed and then I was like, oh yeah, that makes sense. Let's just say, this series has everything that I love in a fantasy story.

I am very curious about how the author is planning on working out this huge prophecy. There are biblical connections that have me a bit confused and maybe a tiny bit concerned with how she might be playing it out. And reading the prophecy it sure seems like there is going to be some heartbreak in the characters' future, which means there will be the need for tissues in the next book. I'm very much looking forward to the fourth and final book of the series, but I have a bit of trepidation as well.

I highly recommend this book, along with the rest of the series. And yes, you really do need to read this series in order.

I received an e-copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to write a favorable review. There are my own honest thoughts.

This continuation of the Painted Wind series was another stunning addition. From the first page to the last I could not put this book down! With war and danger entering the lives of all four characters, the adrenaline shot way up and kept the pace fast and moving. Each decision has a entire new level of danger and sacrifice. And every time the enemy thinks it has found a foothold, our main characters show the strength and determination the Word gives them to stand against these attacks.
Rigan, Corcoran, Isel, and Soren continue to develop and grow into the people they are meant to be. It is so full to be along for the learning. They have found the way to listen to those around them, learn from that knowledge, and depend on the Word and the new Song He has shared with them. With the new leadership roles that have been pushed upon them, turning back is not an option. They must help each other push forward and find the answers everyone needs to try and defeat the Shro Khan once and for all.
J.J. Fischer has created an amazing world full of friendship, determination, danger, risks, traitors, sacrifice, servanthood, and love. This series will take the reader on a wild ride that will get the heart racing with the danger and a smile for when they finally understand how to support each other. Add in a couple love stories that will make your heart sigh with satisfaction. Make sure the series is read in order, as they build on each other. Definitely not a stand alone book. But with the speed each book is inhaled, it takes no time at all. Once you start it is so hard to put the book down! I always wanted to know what was ahead for each person, when the danger might end and they could catch their breath. I highly recommend this series if you like new creative worlds with wonderful characters that become friends and warriors. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Song of the Khan by J.J. Fischer earns every bit of its five stars and then some. This is the kind of fantasy that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place.

The story blends a kingdom setting with richly drawn indigenous cultures, creating a world that feels genuinely unlike anything else on the shelf. At its center is a prophecy with two possible outcomes, giving us two heroines and two heroes to root for. The brothers at the heart of the story are distinct enough that you truly cannot predict who will be the one to fulfill it, and that tension keeps the pages turning.

The prose is stunning. Fischer writes with a clarity and beauty that makes even the quietest scenes sing. The enemy grows more terrifying and complex as the story unfolds, but warriors from a distant nation arrives to offer hard-won knowledge about fighting an unbeatable foe. It gives the story a thread of genuine hope without ever making the stakes feel cheap. The themes run deep, and that mix of hope and impossible odds is where Fischer really shines.

Do I have complaints? I have read half of what J.J. Fischer has written, and I am still waiting to find one.

Highly recommended for fantasy readers who want beautiful writing, layered world-building, and characters worth caring about.

Bottom line: A breathtaking five-star fantasy with stunning prose and a prophecy built for two, Song of the Khan is essential reading for fans who want their epic fantasy to also have real heart.

I've really been enjoying the Painted Wind series by J.J.Khan and "Song of the Khan" was another great read for this series. This is definitely a series best read in order - I do not recommend starting with this book at all. So far 3 books in and anxiously awaiting the 4th book, it's a fantasy series that is well worth the time to pick up.

I like the characters in the book, though some of them can be very frustrating for me at times because they make decisions I never would, but my favorite is a cat like creature named Meehir...if you read it you'll know what I'm talking about. This is a character that brought some much needed light into the story over the last 2 books.

This one has some very light allegorical Christian faith in it and to me is more a good vs. evil book vs. true faith allegory at this point in the series. It is a no spicy fantasy and I feel this one is best for late teens and adults. The series handles some pretty heavy subjects such as misunderstandings between couples, death, destruction and despair.

It was a much heavier read to me than the first two books and I had to read this one over a couple of weeks, partially because of the darkness in the book but also to be fair, this one came at a time where I was dealing with a lot of heavy stuff in my personal life. I am glad to have read it and plan to read book 4 which I hope has more light in it to wrap up the 4 book series.

Thank you to WhiteCrown Publishing and the author for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Fischer’s ability to story-tell in a way that captures your imagination is gift! I have read book 1 and 2 in this series and while the pace of this book was a little slower than the previous two books, every moment was intentional and integral, and for me it didn’t drag or get boring by any means. I was frequently “just one more chapter”-ing it just as much as the first two. I really appreciate the depth Fischer has in this series (and her Nightingale series) the issues aren’t just the visual tangible things it’s also issues happening within people, mental struggles, and battles within people hearts and over their souls.

Read this series if you love fantasy with warring kingdoms, physical and mental representation of good vs evil, romance without explicit content, witty banter, disability rep, chronic pain rep, strong male and female characters, prophecies, a supreme being, hope amidst suffering, an oversized cat companion, wise parental figures, sacrifice, forgiveness, and restoration.

I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review. Seriously though, I'II gush about JJ Fischer's writing all day long if you give me your ear!

Spice: 0/5
Wholesome romance with affection and emotional intimacy. No explicit content, objectification, or graphic sexual descriptions.

Swearing: 0/5
No profanity.

Gore/Violence: 2/5
Features combat, peril, and death. While blood and injuries are mentioned, descriptions are not graphic or excessively detailed.

Another fantastic book by J.J. Fischer, and an excellent third book in the Painted Wind series! I was completely engrossed in the story from beginning to end and am so eager for the fourth book to be released (but will wait patiently because I know it will be worth it!)

This story continues to bring the excitement, romance, political intrigue, epic battles, moments of humor, surprising twists, and wisdom of heart and faith that the first two books delivered. Skilled writing and multiple points of view really carry the story along in a suspenseful way, leaving us wondering what is going to happen from one chapter to the next (pretty much every chapter is a cliff hanger and it’s done so well!) I love the growth of all the characters, especially showing how they are overcoming their own sins, weaknesses, doubts, and fears with the help of The Divine Will (God) and the people and other special characters He puts in their lives.

I highly recommend this book, and the entire series! It’s perfect for readers who like stories about faith, plots against kingdoms, closed-door romance, fantasy with cool creatures, brotherhood and camaraderie, disability representation, and strong women characters.

Thank you to the author for the eARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given willingly.

“To envy someone else’s beauty is to forget the source of that beauty, the original design of which the canvas we admire is but a rough imitation.”

What an amazing third installment to the Painted Wind series. I loved learning more about Soren. His noble, patient, humble, self-sacrificing and justice-seeking heart made him a fantastic hero, and his self-doubts and limitations made him relatable and real. Isel complimented Soren in every way and her compassionate, steady heart did wonders for Soren. Rigan and Corcoran's journey in this book was fraught with pain, grief, regrets and loss; yet the Will infused them with hope, faith and help. There were surprising revelations, more battle scenes and quite a bit of humor in this book. Bram's occasional third person voice was introspective and made me change my mind about the deceptive seer. Corcoran and Soren working side-by-side felt like such a victory. Forgiveness, comfort, and strength given and received highlighted all the characters' turning point in growth and maturity.

How will the prophecies be fulfilled? I can't wait for the final book in the series! I received a complimentary copy courtesy of WhiteFire Publishing and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Song of the Khan

So who told me that I wouldn’t want to put this book down when I picked it up to read?!? JJ Fischer has yet again given us a gripping story to add to her Painted Wind series. We are following the journeys of Soren, Isel, Rigan, and Corcoran as there is a race against time to end an escalating war against the evil forces of the Shro Khan.

I was mesmerized by not only the vivid telling of each character’s journey for victory, but also by the spiritual experience each character must encounter in order to fulfill their destinies according to the divine Will.

Even there were moments of great intensity within the story, there were also moments of such captivating beauty that I want to savor for a very long time.

This is the third book in Fischer’s Painted Wind series. I highly recommend that if you have not read the first two books yet, you should read them before this one or most of what happens in this book will not make sense to you.

The first two books are not relaxing reads, and neither is this one. There are some hilarious chapters, but a lot of chapters are full of pain, sadness, misunderstandings, hard lessons to learn, and war on both physical and spiritual levels.

There are some really great insights into friendship, love, our relationships with God and others, trust, and humility. I continue to be amazed at the world created by Fischer that helps us learn more about our own.

Song of the Khan is book 3 in the Painted Wind series by J.J. Fischer. Continuing the story that began in books 1 & 2, Song of the Khan has even higher stakes, more sweet/slow-burn romance, and characters still trying to figure out the meanings of more than one prophecy.

This series is fantastic!! I cannot wait for the fourth and (I think) final book! Everything is so well-written: the heroes, the villains, the world-building, the way the story progresses. It’s wonderful!

My favorite character in this series has been Isel. But Meehir very nearly has overtaken her place as my favorite in this book. That’s all I’m gonna say about it, because I don’t do spoilers.

The ending was crazy-good. There’s enough stuff that gets wrapped up that I’m satisfied…for now, but Fischer also gives us a scene at the very end that has me trying to figure out WHAT ON EARTH is going to happen? (Or not earth, because it’s fantasy, but you know what I mean.) I’ve already said it, but I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!

I so enjoyed this book, and recommend it (and the previous 2 books) to adult readers of clean or Christian fantasy. This series is a gem. I highly recommend it.

A full 5⭐️ from me!

Since finishing Reign Breaker, I have been waiting for Song of the Khan so that I can continue the incredible tale of the Twin Kingdoms.

We start right where we left off, and from the first page it is filled with action, intrigue, romance, and more. You are immersed in the joys and struggles of Rigan, Corcoran, Isel, and Soren as they battle against the evil Shro Khan.

The story has a strong faith element, and I was captivated to the very last page.

I recommend reading the entire Painted Wind series, starting with The Heart of the King.

Such an epic continuation of a series I know will stick in my mind and heart forever. JJ Fischer has this way of captivating you from the first page and not letting you look away. While this one was a bit more war-based than the others (because it kind of had to be), which made it difficult to read at times for this not-so-war-loving reader, I couldn't stop reading. Cannot wait for the final instalment!!

I was fortunate to read an early copy of the book from the publisher. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I’m so happy this story picked up right where it left off in the Reign Breaker. I have been fully vested in Rigan, Corcoran, Isel, and Soren and how their stories weave together. This book is a fast-paced, high-stakes, and unpredictable story. I was quite happy with the path it took while at the same time, quite surprised at several moments. I am glad the saga is not quite finished as there are quite a few loose ends and I have questions! I really enjoyed the parallels to the spiritual world as people and creatures, on both sides of the conflict, battled it out. The thread of the ancient song was beautiful, and I really enjoyed the impact and implication of that premise within our lives today. The Twin Kingdoms have a lot left to offer and each of the characters still have a story to tell. I’m looking forward to the next one!

Really enjoyed this one with all the twist and turns, especially as new information came to light. Spent a good deal of time frustrated by stubborn heroines, though not quite a much a in the previous book. Ultimately, they got sorted in their thinking, only to figure out there would be yet another book in the series which I’m very much looking forward to.

I have really loved this series and have you seen this cover!? Stunning! This is book three and you just absolutely have to start with the first in the series. Each book builds on the other and has a cliffhanger so there is a lot going on. I would say this third novel ties up a lot of things but it is clear there is more to come and thankfully there is another book coming out next year! I really struggled with Rigan's character in this one and I didn't feel quite as invested with her plot. I was very curious what would happen with Soren and Isel simply because that is where book two left us. There is a lot of uncertainty happening within this book so at times it seemed to be drawn out, like a bit of the same thing happening over and over again. There was forward motion and the ending is great but in the middle it did move a bit slow for me. BUT I still love these characters and even the secondary ones, of whom there is a wonderful surprise in this story that you won't see coming! I am eager to read book four because I have no idea how everything will get wrapped up. Highly recommend!!

Song of the Khan by J. J. Fischer was an amazing read !
I had read the first two books in this series before reading this one, and the story keeps getting better and better !
I really enjoyed all the plot twists, the deepness of the characters and the fact that each chapter is from a different character’s point of view. (The 4 main characters’ points of view).
I really enjoyed the different dynamics that we can find between the 4 mains characters : you have Corcoran and Rigan, the warriors ; and Isel and Soren, the more quiet ones.
I can’t wait to read the 4th (and last ?) book in this series when it comes out :)

This book scared me a few times. 😅 Not going to explain how or why, you just have to read it for yourself.

Honestly, I've been waiting for this book since I read Reign Breaker earlier this year. Like I NEED to finish these characters' stories! I love them so much!

J.J. Fischer has written another incredible fantasy book that truly draws you into the story. There are so many themes in this book that line of with what we seen in the world (especially with evil t@rgeting ch1ldren.) I loved how she explained the use of music in the story, which I also believe lines up with the modern world.

One of the best parts to me was reading about both Corcoran and Rigan AND Soren and Isel. They are both amazing couples and I love watching their relationship go beyond the wedding/engagement where most books often end. Both had a lot of battles to fight and had to figure out how to rely more on each other and on the Divine Will (God). Corcoran and Rigan are still my favorites, but I definitely loved Soren and Isel as well!!!

This one is definitely the darkest so far with certain elements involving the Khan and people controlled by them. Honestly, not sure how this could be labeled a "comedic" romantasy. It is 100% an amazing story, it's just a little dark to be comedic IMO.

Special thanks to the author for giving me an ARC copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

Song of the Khan is book three in the Painted Wind series, and I continue to be completely invested in this epic story.

Song of the Khan focuses on two couples who ultimately choose to follow The Divine Will. Secrets are revealed about family histories and hints of what is to come. Epic battle scenes where the fight against the Khan happens with a new unexpected weapon. Traitors are revealed, and new alliances made. This book promises that there will be a final battle of good versus evil not only on the physical battlefield, but the spiritual one as well.

This fantasy story has royalty, upper and lower class romance, no spice, biblical allusion, good versus evil, fantastic world building, relatable characters, and the promise of hope. I highly recommend it, and I can’t wait for the conclusion in book four!
