The Elements of Analysis: An Introduction to Careful Reading
The Elements of Analysis answers two oft-asked questions for students and teachers of What is literary analysis and how do I do it? This practical guide offers an objective model for literary analysis and proven methods for elevating student writing above mere summary. Jackson and Kearney show how the process of digging into details creates a sure foundation for analysis and student-generated insights. These fundamentals of analysis will lead to the type of deeper thinking that produces more critical reading, stronger writing, and a more robust love of literature. This book is not a comprehensive guide to literary analysis, nor is it a typical catalogue of methods of argumentation. Rather, its primary strength is in its concise precision, focusing on the simple and essential. It is teacher-friendly—it supplements existing methods of teaching and writing about literature and is easy to integrate into lessons. It is also student-friendly—it features easily digestible examples with very little jargon. It is designed for high school and college teachers and students of literature who seek to improve their work.

Short and easy easy read on how to write 5-8 page literary analysis papers. While they philosophically miss the mark hermeneutically (I'm just making up adverbs at this point...), they give specific and practical advice that could save many high school and college freshmen the headache of trying to figure out what literary analysis is on their own. Google just isn't what it used to be.

This book would have saved me from a lot of the trial-and-error sort of writing that I did in college. It was also very helpful in defining what literary analysis is at its most basic level.
