Review of advance copy received from Publisher

This is seriously such a good book for so many reasons. In no particular order:
A Trick of Spades was fantastic, and it can be hard for sequels to replicate a previous success without being too repetitive—but this book did it so beautifully. The character relationships progressed in wonderful ways.
And also, the themes? The magic system?? Goodness, all of this has to be in spoiler tags, doesn't it?
I liked that we got to see more marvels with some extremely interesting powers. Speaking of which, Finna is so cool.

Bottom line: Go read A Trick of Spades and then preorder this book. You will not regret it.
p.s. I'm the first review!! This is very exciting. I was so glad to get to read an ARC as part of a summer internship, and I look forward to the book coming out so I can get a physical copy and force all my friends to read it.

A Trick of Spades (book 1 of this series) was one of the most unique fantasy novels I’d ever read, while also feeling familiar. It was such a treat to be surprised like that! This follow-up story is no different. Kazanjian’s writing is superlative and her attention to detail so good you will feel like you are right alongside her characters in the story. A rare and true Young Teen YA novel (with 14yo boy and girl protagonists), this series—The Riven Castle—is an atmospheric urban fantasy you will want to pick up for your upper MG to teen readers (and read yourself!).
