Thank you Indie Author Insider and Candace Nicole for the chance to read this book as an ARC. This review is honest and voluntary.

This was a dark thriller with organized crime at the center. This book was full of lies, manipulation, control, and obsession from our characters. Everyone wants to be on top, and what will our characters do to get there?

I found this book enthralling, and I was wondering what was going to happen next. I think the book was a bit short, and it could have been more suspenseful if there had been more build up between each big scene. This is a good quick thriller read for those looking for an action-packed story.

Thank you to the author and The Indie Author Insider for sending me an ARC of this book.

Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me. This is book two in an interconnected series, but I went into it under the impression it could be read on its own. I understood that reading Tangled Roots first would give me more background on the characters, so I didn’t expect to catch every reference or small detail. However, I did expect enough context for this story to feel complete by itself. There were still moments when I felt like I was missing something, and it didn’t leave me wanting to explore more of the interconnected world.

At times, the story felt a little rushed and I struggled to connect with it. The trigger warnings also had me expecting a much darker and heavier read, but it didn’t feel as intense as I anticipated. That may simply come down to my personal tolerance for darker themes.

My biggest issue was the setup for a possible future relationship between two characters. He first noticed her when she was 16 and he was 26. Although they aren’t together in this book and are both adults now, knowing when his interest began made me uncomfortable with the possibility of it becoming romantic later.

Overall, this was a very quick read with plenty happening throughout. I can see it working better for readers who enjoy shorter stories that jump right into the action and have a lot going on. The premise had potential, but it ultimately didn’t vibe with who I am as a reader, and I was left wanting more depth and development.

Review from an Arc: 3.5 stars.
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

First of all I wanna say that I was hook to this book! I read it in a day practically. I truly enjoyed it! The only reason I didn't give it a solid 4 stars was due to the ending.

You will have to read it and be your own judge. Remember that everyone has different tastes, who knows and for you the ending is perfect just the way it is.

One thing is for sure it was a very enjoyable read.

Going in, I was sure any confusion was on me. I skipped book one, and for the first stretch of chapters I could not keep the characters or their relationships straight. By the end I realized that was never the real problem. This book never got dark enough to confuse me, worry me, or hold my attention.

Deeper Roots by Candace Nicole came with a blurb and content warning list built for a heavy read. Multi POV psychological thriller. Obsessive, protective male lead. Kidnapping, drugging, strangulation, references to childhood sexual abuse, a death on page. I received this ARC through the author's street team kit, and I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. On paper, that lineup should have had me white knuckling my Kobo.

In practice, Anika gets kidnapped because the villain figures out she is the love interest of the morally grey syndicate guy who has been protecting her from a distance for years. I never once wondered what was coming next, and nothing on the page came close to matching that content warning list.

I like dark. I want the discomfort those warnings are promising me. This one handed me a warning label for a much bigger, much darker book than the one actually printed on the pages.

None of this is about the writing itself. This is clean, professional prose. No typos, no clunky sentences, nothing that reads rushed or auto generated. Candace Nicole clearly put in real effort here, which is exactly why I am not rating this lower.

This is technically part of a series. It can be read as a standalone. Even so, I would still start with book one. I read this cold and spent real time trying to keep names, relationships, and backstory straight. That one is on me for skipping ahead. Worth knowing before you start though.

If you are newer to dark romance or psychological thriller and want to wade into the genre without its full weight, this could be a gentle entry point. If you already read deep in this space and picked it up because of that content warning list, you'll find this runs tepid compared to what it promises.

3 stars for the craft and the effort. The story itself never cashed the check its own blurb and warning list wrote. Anyone else read this and feel like the warning label was scarier than the book?

After Tangled Roots surprised me with how completely it held my attention, I went into Deeper Roots wondering whether Candice Nicole could maintain that same level of suspense and intensity.

She did.

Tangled Roots establishes the connections between these characters and their relationships to Clark Delane, Deeper Roots digs underneath those connections and reveals how much was happening beyond their knowledge.

One of my favourite elements was Carter Delane.

Carter doesn't simply enter the story and suddenly become important. His presence changes our understanding of things that happened before. Information was placed where particular people would discover it. Certain truths were exposed while others were deliberately protected. Things that once appeared to happen organically suddenly look very different when you understand that someone has been moving pieces from the shadows.

Carter is observant, meticulous and intentional. His history with and surveillance of Anika will understandably be uncomfortable for some readers, particularly because his fixation began when she was young, although he did not pursue a relationship with her at that age. I found him fascinating as a fictional character precisely because his protectiveness, obsession and questionable methods exist alongside each other rather than being easily separated into "good" and "bad."

I also appreciated how the investigation grew beyond Clark himself. Attempts to expose what happened run directly into the protection afforded by wealth, influence and powerful connections. Taking the evidence to a journalist who carefully verifies the information before exposing it gave that portion of the story a satisfying progression.

Joseph's storyline was probably my one moment of hesitation. His actions initially felt sudden enough that I went back to see whether I'd missed something. In retrospect, the growing distance between him and Anika was there, but the specific incident still felt abrupt. His lack of remorse afterward, however, revealed a side of Joseph that genuinely changed how I viewed him.

And there is an interesting psychological contrast between Joseph and Carter running beneath all of this.

Joseph built his professional life around studying the bystander effect after witnessing Clark's death and failing to intervene. Carter also watches—but Carter's observation is calculated. When he chooses not to intervene, it isn't paralysis. It's a decision.

Two observers. Two completely different relationships with action, responsibility and control.

That's the kind of character layering that kept me thinking beyond the suspense itself.

These books aren't my normal reading lane. There is no spice carrying my attention and no dark-romance relationship driving the plot. Yet Candice Nicole has now held me through two books with pacing, suspense, interconnected characters and carefully timed revelations.

Tangled Roots planted the seed.

Deeper Roots made me dig.

And with Severed Roots promising to turn the focus toward Mara and the consequences that remain after justice has supposedly been served, I'm absolutely ready to see what happens when those roots are finally severed.

Five stars.

Deeper Roots
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🖤 Plot
THIS is the kind of dark content I actually enjoy. 🖤
This book goes straight into obsession, manipulation, abuse, betrayal, control, kidnapping, stalking, and psychological torture, and somehow it had me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time.
What really pulled me in was the psychological side of everything. This wasn't darkness thrown in just for shock value. The manipulation and control actually felt purposeful, and I was constantly questioning what was real, who could be trusted, and just how far these characters were willing to go.
The story kept moving, and every time I thought I had a handle on what was happening, something else came along. The emotional side also really worked for me because I felt like I was right there with the characters experiencing everything with them.

🧠 Characters
Carter is probably the character who stood out to me the most, and not necessarily because I liked him. 😂
He's terrifying because his behavior is so calculated. His violence isn't just him losing his temper and acting irrationally. There is thought behind what he does, and THAT is what made him so disturbing to me.
I love when a dark thriller actually makes the psychology behind the characters believable. Give me a character who is genuinely unsettling because of who they are, not because the author randomly decided they needed to do something horrible for shock value.

😬 Overall
This book was DARK, disturbing, suspenseful, and completely addictive.
I actually really enjoy dark content when there's a psychological reason behind it, and Deeper Roots delivered that for me. The manipulation, obsession, and control were easily my favorite parts because they felt character-driven instead of thrown into the story just to make it darker.
There were definitely moments that made me uncomfortable, but honestly... that's a good thing for this kind of book. 😂🖤 If I'm reading a dark psychological thriller, I WANT to feel a little disturbed. I want to question everything. I want to be stressed. I want to keep reading because I need to know what the hell is going to happen next.
And this book had me doing exactly that.
I absolutely loved this one and I cannot wait for the next book! 👀🔥

I received this arc from a group I'm in called the Indie Author Insider Influencer and I'm leaving this review voluntarily. This was a 5 star read for me. I devoured it in one day.

After reading Tangled Roots I was hooked on this story. The characters and The Syndicate with its members. So I went right into this book.

We meet Nina, Raymond, Bethany, Joseph, Anika, & Mara in book one. They all have a secret. And that one secret ties them all together in the murder of Clark Delaine. But what they thought was hidden for the last 12 yrs comes out and they are thrown together because of it.

In Deeper Roots we see the aftermath of what became of this group after arrests were made, stories were published, and the secret was out. Carter Delaine is introduced and we find out he is yet another one of Clark's children who wanted revenge on the man who fathered him. But he has another secret. One that he keeps buried deep.

Anika Washington, the woman he's been watching and protecting silently for the last 16 years. The only woman he has ever loved. But she had no clue. When his enemies come after her Carter will stop at nothing to protect her. Even if it means never having her in his life.

Just some side notes from me!
In book one I felt sorry for Joseph. I felt bad that he made one mistake and it was going to cost him his love and his future. Well I don't feel sorry for him now! Grrrr! You'll see why.
Bethany, didn't like her in the first book. Really don't like her in this one. But every story needs a villain right?
Raymond, I need more of him. I need to have more of his story. He's kinda dreamy lol.
Nina, she is still a mystery. What is she hiding? Who is she working with??????
Mara, this poor girl! But wait what is this? Dominic? What???? *I'll need more of this story.
Anika, she is a badA.. who has lost trust in everyone she thought had her back. And when she learns about Carter well... we don't know what she thinks because you left us on a cliffhanger! Ugh LOL! Book 3 can't get here soon enough.

I actually really like dark content when the psychology behind it feels convincing, and Deeper Roots goes straight into obsession, manipulation, abuse, betrayal and control. The story clearly isn't trying to make the darkness comfortable; it uses it to create tension and keep you questioning what the characters are really capable of.

What interests me most is the psychological side of the characters. Carter, especially, is frightening because his violence isn't presented as a simple loss of temper. Bethany describes him as calculating and dangerous, which makes the threat feel much more deliberate. That's exactly the kind of thing I appreciate in a dark thriller: disturbing behaviour that actually makes psychological sense rather than characters suddenly acting irrationally just to create drama.

The story also has the kind of constant danger and escalation I enjoy. Kidnapping, stalking, coercion, violence, family betrayal and obsessive behaviour give it plenty of momentum. It's definitely not a feelgood book, but I don't need dark books to be feelgood when the darkness is handled well.

The writing is straightforward and dramatic, which suits the thriller genre.

My notes:
🖤 This is the kind of dark content I actually enjoy.
🧠 The psychological manipulation is much more interesting to me than darkness for shock value.
⚡ Plenty of serious things happen, so it keeps moving.
😬 Definitely disturbing in places—but that's a positive for me when it feels purposeful.

Verdict: 4/5 for me. The dark psychological elements are the biggest selling point. I especially like that the frightening behaviour feels deliberate and character-driven rather than randomly inserted for shock. This is much closer to the kind of psychological darkness I'd actively look for.

I received a free ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.

This book completely surprised me. I went into it not really knowing what to expect, and I ended up getting way more invested in the story and the characters than I thought I would.

I really enjoyed the emotional side of the book. The characters felt flawed and human, and I liked seeing their relationship develop instead of everything feeling rushed or too perfect. There were definitely moments where I wanted to scream at them 😂, but at the same time, that just made me more invested.

The pacing was good for the most part, although there were a few moments where I felt the story dragged a little. Still, the emotional payoff made it worth it for me.

What I appreciated most was that it felt like the characters actually had to work through things rather than everything magically being fixed. There was drama, tension, and plenty of emotional moments, but it never felt completely disconnected from the characters' development.

Overall, I really enjoyed Deeper Roots. It wasn't perfect, but it gave me the emotions I was looking for and definitely kept me turning the pages. If you enjoy character-driven romance with emotional depth, complicated relationships, and plenty of feelings, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try. ❤️

I did read Tangled Roots prior and because it had been a good little bit with a bunch of books in between, I did have to double check on people and relationships and such (This is a me problem). Carter is as expected creepy in his own right as a stalker and as having stalked someone in their teens to adulthood. Obsession vs love. There are some half truths, words of manipulation, planting seeds of doubt. Overall I do think it's written well with little errors. The story is more of the tension, and wondering what the characters are going to do with the actions that have happened, stalking, manipulation, and other things you would expect.

The characters aren't perfect people, they have secrets, reasons for the things they do and have done. The writing is professional and done well. No point was I bored. I was always left curious to how characters were going to react upon finding out the information that we, the reader knew.

This is a good lead in for those who don't think they are ready for heavier psychological thrillers for sure or those who aren't wanting that highly heavy need from those. I'm definitely curious to the upcoming story after this one and will be picking it up to read it.

This was a tense, heavy psychological thriller that completely pulls you into a messy web of manipulation. The story focuses on Carter Delaine, a morally grey lead working within a powerful Syndicate who has spent sixteen years acting as a secret, obsessive protector to Anika Washington. He completely controls her environment from afar until his enemies find out and kidnap her, thrusting Anika into a nightmare of psychological isolation and brutal family secrets.

I thought the power dynamics and multi-POV format were handled really well. Carter is definitely a dark, complicated character with his stalking behavior and hidden cameras, but watching the narrative transition into Anika’s fight for survival made the stakes feel incredibly high. The book deals with heavy themes of trauma, betrayal, and resilience, and the pace doesn't slow down once the secrets start unraveling. It is a gritty, dark read that doesn't shy away from the twisted elements of an obsession.

If you like psychological thrillers with heavy secrets and a deeply protective, morally grey hero, this is a solid pick.

3.75 ⭐

When signing up to read this book, I was ubder the impression that you don't need to read the first book to be able to get stuck into this second in the series. Though I don't see how this is possible, if you're going to read this I highly recommend reading the first book otherwise you'll feel a bit lost as it is a continuation of storyline not long after the first ends, linking seamlessly.

I appreciated the change in character POVs from the first book, and the writing was faster pace than the first. Though overall the writing style includes a very repetitive nature, characters repeatedly stating what's going on was a bit much, found myself saying "yes, i know, i get it" quite a bit. But if you don't read books quickly I can see how it wouldn't make a difference to you and would be quite useful to ve reminded of the storyline.

My favourite part was early on in the book there was a scene with Anikaa's parents talking about how one felt hurt by the other, but still loved each other, it was a great example of communication in a relationship.

Many thanks to the Author for sending me this ARC

**4 ⭐️**

*Deeper Roots* by Candace Nicole was such an emotional and beautifully layered read. I loved how the story explored family, relationships, healing, and the things that shape us long before we even realize how deeply they’ve taken root. There was so much heart in these pages, and the characters felt wonderfully human with all their flaws, struggles, and moments of growth.

Candace Nicole did a great job balancing the heavier emotional moments with enough hope and warmth to keep me invested. I found myself thinking about the characters even when I wasn’t reading, which is always a sign of a good story for me.

And now I’m **anxious to see how Candace Nicole wraps up this series!** I *really* hope Bethany and Joseph get what’s coming to them because, whew… they have me invested! 😂 I’m also very curious to get more of Mara’s story because I feel like there’s still so much there to uncover.

This was a memorable read with plenty of emotion, drama, and depth. **4stars from me!** 🌿📚

I am very conflicted with this read.. the adventure/action side of the story was amazing really what kept me hooked to the story.

The beginning was really confusing for me.. everyone was connected, but it wasn't totally clear who and how. Soot felt kinda weird that our fmc was great friends with someone but didn't know the sibling lf that person? Like... it didn't really connect well for me.
Also, the parents of our fmc, that whole storyline didn't make a ton of sense, considering their dislike of our mmc... and the age gap i really didn't love. Honestly, it made me not want to root for the mmc, but he's also supposed to be the hero.
Now i get it, the age gap wasn't portrayed as something good, but it just made the whole thing feel icky and unresolved in the end. Honestly, a little unresolvable too. Like you can't and shouldn't just ignore it.

Also, the one open door scene, of cheating, just kinda felt thrown in, and made the character connections that much more confusing. 😅

Anyways, im really not trying to be too critical. Im so sorry if it comes off that way.. but personally, I probably wont be continuing the series..

This book picked up where the last one left off, with Carter, the Syndicate and his obsession with Anika. This book lacked the mystery element of the first one, but the heartfelt familial relationship between the characters remained the same. Joseph surprised me a little after what he did,

“To the ones who know: the darkest secrets always have the deepest roots.”

A woman scorned
Stalking
Obsession
Secret society’s
Multiple POVs
Family secrets
Kidnapping
Betrayal

Candice does it again with another amazing, gripping, twisty, thriller!!! The second book in the root series.

This friend group full of secrets and lies and the roots keep twisting deeper and deeper.

Carter has a secret obsession to protect. A new climbing career path. With obstacles in his way making both things impossible to achieve at the same time.

Anika is looking to unlocked family secrets while trying to heal from past and present hurts. She gets pulled into a sick and twisted game of men without her consent.

Joseph is a new person. Full of confidence and a best selling author and professor. He’s ready to move on to bigger and better things.

Bethany is a woman scorned and will get what she wants. She is willing to go to whatever lengths necessary to achieve what she wants.

I have received this book as ARC by Indie Author

I was sold when I read "psychological thriller" and "obsessive male lead" tags, and honestly, that's exactly what got me hooked. Deeper Roots is a solid medium-length read-the kind where the tension just quietly builds and you don't notice how invested you are until you can't put it down.
The male lead is exactly what you want from that trope- protective in a way that feels a little too intense and you're never fully sure if that's a good thing or not. That's the fun part. The story also weaves in real themes of trauma and healing without it feeling heavy-headed, and the secrets slowly unraveling kept me guessing till the end.
If you like morally grey leads and slow-burn tension with some real emotional depth underneath, this one's worth the read.

This was a gentle entry into the dark romance/psychological thriller genre. For me it was a 3.5⭐️ read.
This could be a standalone, but I would suggest reading the first (Tangled Roots) in the series first.

This book had a lot of psychological manipulation and that portion was much more prevalent than any dark, morally grey thriller portion. There were many great things about this read! It just wasn't for me and that is really okay.

What to Expect:

🖤Psychological thriller
❤️‍🔥Obsessive Male lead
🖤Secret Protector
❤️‍🔥Morally Gray Male lead
🖤Power Dynamics
❤️‍🔥Trauma & Healing
🖤Secrets & Lies
❤️‍🔥Survival & Resilience

Thank you for the opportunity for this ARC.

Dark, suspenseful, and seriously addictive! Deeper Roots pulled me in and kept me on edge from beginning to end. The tension, manipulation, secrets, and psychological games had me constantly wondering what was coming next.
Carter and Anika’s story definitely brings the obsession-vs-love question to the forefront, and the characters are far from perfect, which makes everything even more intriguing. I loved how emotionally immersive the story felt, like I was right there experiencing it with them.
A well-written psychological thriller with plenty of suspense, twists, and unanswered questions. I was never bored, and I’m definitely curious to see where the story goes next!

He thought distance would keep her safe...he was wrong. Going into this I don't know what I'll encounter but first. Fuck you Bethany! I knew I didn't like her when reading her parts in book one.

But most importantly, wow, this was as great as the first book. Carter is weird for that, I don't blame Anika for her reaction. Also, how old is Carter, cause I'm still trying figure the age gap. What's up with Nina? Besides that this was a great read and I loved it.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next book in the series.

Psychological thriller!!! Read trigger warnings!! For 16 yrs Carter Delaine kept a secret, being and operating in the shadows of a powerful syndicate. He has a weakness and that Anita Washington, who he tries to keep safe by manipulating the world around her. But when Carters enemies end up kidnapping her and twisting things her life is no longer safe she is now trying to survive from a man’s obsession. This is the 2nd book, first book Tangled Roots I suggest you go read them both and let’s wait for the 3rd one together

A really good read. I know this is book 2 of the series so I may have missed some aspects from book 1 but I did manage to understand and follow it. Enjoyed the story line and the relationships the characters had together - well... Most of them. I like how Anika is a strong woman in her own right and didn't just swoon after the mmc. Kind of hope that something will progress with her and Carter though. A really enjoyable read and definitely leaves you wanting to break open book 3!!

Thank you Candace for the opportunity to read this as an advanced reader copy.

Make sure to read the first book Tangled Roots, or you will be confused.

There were alot of moments in this story that had me tense up, but other moments when I was confused and wanted just a little bit more of the story, and the characters, it felt a bit rushed at times, and ties were undone.

I do enjoy the fact that this and Tangled Roots, dive into the world of power, and people who possess that power, what they do, & will do to keep it.

With all that said, definitely check it out and make your own opinions as everyone is different.

We return to a town where power, manipulation, secrets, and betrayal run rampant, where you should ALWAYS second guess who to trust.

Candace gives you the original cast with two new voices and perspectives to side eye.

Filled with drama, this short story with medium-paced writing that's easy to follow.

With secrets and hidden intentions revealed, this installment leaned into mafia romance vibes.

Having said all of that, I needed a twist. A gasp, OMG I didnt see that coming moment for it to classify as a thriller for me.

Deeper Roots had me hooked from start to finish. It’s a psychological thriller with organized crime elements that kept me on edge the entire time — and Carter is one of the most compelling morally gray male leads I’ve read. My favorite line: ‘The most terrifying cages are the ones built by the people who claim they want to keep you safe.’ Anika and Carter’s story is intense, layered, and impossible to put down.

I received an early copy as an ARC reader in exchange for an honest review.

Deeper Roots is book two of the Root Series and it feels different from Tangled Roots. Tangled Roots followed five points of view on the night someone was murdered and the secret they kept hidden. This time I narrowed the focus to Anika and Carter. The tension comes from what happens next. The familiar characters are still here and new ones join them. It's a psychological thriller built on suspense, control and obsession. I wanted it to stay in your head after you finish.

This is a psychological thriller about manipulation, power, obsession, stalking and revenge.    The characters are complicated, secretive and are not to be trusted as they have their own hidden agenda.  The game being played is dangerous and the consequences of being outmaneuvered is death or a life on the run.

"I received a free ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review."

This is the second installment in a trilogy of books. This is a psychological thriller involving revenge, power, stocking and manipulation. I enjoyed the secrets and the danger. The betrayal portrayed was well written. While I was entertained, I think the suspense could’ve been increased . Overall a good read and I will continue onto the third book.
