The first book I ever read by S.H. Cooper was a collection of short stories and I loved it. I like this one even more.
A lot of short stories feel like there's something missing because the author had to leave things out for brevity's sake. None of the 10 stories in this collection felt that way.
Although I enjoyed all of the stories, there were three standouts for me - "Breaking the Routine," "Justice Has Teeth" and "Death of the Author."
"Breaking the Routine," will make readers feel the main character's anxiety. "Justice Has Teeth," has the perfect revenge for those who wronged the protagonist and "Death of the Author," just showed a deal too good to be true should be questioned!

August 5, 2026I was lucky enough to get an ARC of S.H. Cooper's latest short story collection and couldn't wait to dive in.
Here are my thoughts...
THE WITCH'S PATH: A sad cautionary tale about a cursed woman seeking solitude. Lovely writing with a violent conclusion.
BREAKING THE ROUTINE: A disorienting fever dream that leads to a devastating realisation. The repetition really worked with this story, and it's so sad.
BANBOGACH: A very satisfying revenge story about one woman's quest to make things right.
THE SPACE SHE TAKES: A very sad tale about a nameless forgotten woman who demands to be remembered.
CHARNEL MOTHER: Another great story with a stern warning about messing with the dead. Creepy, too.
HUMAN NATURE: Wow, what a story! The creeping dread and unknown is thick and overwhelming, until the inevitable happens. Human nature, indeed.
JUSTICE HAS TEETH: Very unique and quite morbid take on Lady Justice. I really enjoyed the way things turned out because the beginning of the story made me so damn angry. As it should. Great tale featuring an unexpected avenging angel.
DEATH OF THE AUTHOR: Terrific yet terrifying story about a struggling author who is granted a wish by a mysterious stranger.
THE KEY TO HAPPINESS: This deliciously killer story made me chuckle a few times. Yeah, I have a morbid sense of humour.
HAUNTING THE GHOSTS OF HALFTOP: A melancholy tale full of memories and the imprints people leave behind.
Wow, what an emotional ride this collection turned out to be. It might be a series of horror tales with varying levels of terror, but every story is so much more. Death and revenge feature heavily, but the forgotten victims and the ones whose lives were taken too soon have the strongest voices within these pages. I found so much sadness within this intriguing book, but I also found the power of resilience.
I loved all the stories and will remember these characters for a long time.

An excellent short story collection, full of female rage, bitter injustice, and well-deserved punishment! Ten stories reminiscent of morality tales, each one delivering great emotional payoff, oozing sadness and melancholy, with the occasional sweet feeling of recognition and acknowledgment as counterpoint. Thematically, they range from witches and curses (the opening story, "The Witch's Path", being a prime example), to ghosts (see the closing tale, "Haunting the Ghosts of Halftop") and Faustian bargains ("Death of an Author"), with several nods to religious horror (see the chilling "Justice Has Teeth"). The premises are familiar, but they're always developed in unpredictable and interesting ways. The supernatural elements are integral to the stories, usually associated with notions of retribution, revenge, and the afterlife. My favorites were "Breaking the Routine", a story of existential dread and office horror, the brilliant "The Space She Takes", urban horror with a nasty and heartbreaking twist, about the anonymity of crime victims in a city, and the metaphysical-slash-religious tale of "Human Nature", with the mot horrifying last line in the volume. Highly recommended for fans of emotional, psychological horror, stories figuring powerful responses to injustice, and supernatural tales with bittersweet endings!
