Getting Dirty

Rate this book
Another day of studying. It is rainy outside and I am in the same coffee shop that I sit in almost every night, working on another paper for another class that makes me feel like a cog in a machine. But nevertheless, I had to finish my Master’s degree to get the promotion I wanted.

What I wouldn’t give for a little excitement…

I take a moment to stop and stretch. I also notice the lack of noise in the café. I look around and I see that the room is pretty much empty. There is a young woman with some incredible tattoos reading a magazine behind the register. I bet she and I would get along.

Across the room, a man sits quietly with a MacBook and briefcase. He looks to be in his early 40’s, with dark eyes and dark brown hair with a little bit of silver coming through on the side. Somehow, the silver suits him well. I’m seriously jealous of how men age so gracefully. His face has soft but masculine angles and is completely smooth, not even a hint of 5 o’clock shadow and he is wearing black slacks and gray button up shirt with the top two buttons undone.

I probably wouldn’t have realized that I was staring at this guy but for him raising his eyes and looking at me, meeting my gaze from across the room. I quickly look back down at my laptop and start typing away, feeling my face flush with embarrassment.

Today was a good day. Anna was on her way to an interview.

If truth be told, Anna actually already has this job bagged. This interview was just going to be a sort of formality. Her roommate, Karen, was already working for the bank and had given her a recommendation. Even better, Anna had already met the hiring manager while attending a work event with Karen months ago. She made a good impression, too.

The bank was owned by a very prominent family who owned several other corporations across the country and even in some destinations aboard. She heard that the current CEO was a handsome billionaire who liked chasing girls. Anna had heard several rumors of the billionaire’s debauchery from Karen’s workplace gossip circle.

Anna shook off her random thoughts as she stood in front of the building that housed the bank and other offices that belonged to the handsome CEO’s family. She was trying to remember the name of the man when someone almost pushed her towards the door.

"Thanks again, Anna!"

I waved half-heartedly as Joyce, the head librarian, whizzed by the circulation desk. Wrapped up in her fall jacket and stylish stiletto boots, she looked like she was headed for a night out on the town, not picking up her kids from a school play practice. Sucking in my cheeks, I watched her leave, my lips pursed irritably, then looked back to the computer.

Maybe I ought to start popping out bratty kids, then maybe I could be the one who got to leave early for once.

No, that wasn't she had a gaggle of young kids, and how she managed to take care of them and manage our public library branch was beyond me. It made sense that she needed to leave early sometimes. I mean, heck, I had no plans for my Friday night; why shouldn't I stay the few hours later to close everything up?

Shaking my head, a few pieces of my strawberry blonde hair falling from the loose bun atop my head, I locked the front desk computer, checked the main doors, and then headed for the downstairs area. We'd had our usual Friday afternoon school group of elementary-aged kids in for a few hours in the basement reading zone, and they'd left it a complete disaster. After they'd left, the library had returned to its blissful silence, and I was there to pick up the pieces.

Books everywhere. Snack wrappers stuffed onto shelves. Bean bag chairs deformed and scattered. What a disaster. Hands on my hips, I surveyed the area from the old wooden stairwell, then sauntered down to begin.
