His very natural, easy-going style would lead you to believe that James Van Praagh is chatting with a friend on the telephone, not communicating messages from the grave. James is a survival evidence medium, meaning that he is able to bridge the gap between two planes of existence, that of the living and that of the dead, by providing evidential proof of life after death via detailed messages. "I'm clairsentient," he explains, "which simply means clear feeling. I feel the emotions and personalities of the deceased. I am also clairvoyant," he adds, clarifying that, "the first is feeling, the second is seeing, very much like Whoopi Goldberg in the movie, Ghost." The true essence of the messages are the feelings behind the words. James is an expert on this subject, since he has been in touch with those feelings most of his adult life. "The spirits communicate by their emotions. No words exist in the English language, or any other for that matter, which can describe the intense sensations."
Personality traits come in as well. If a person was talkative while alive, he will come through with plenty to say. James also relays physical traits and death conditions as evidence. "If I convey recognizable evidence along with even a fraction of the loving energy behind the message, I consider the reading successful."
James' public popularity began during his appearances on the NBC talk show The Other Side. The show concentrated on paranormal issues, and James became the favorite guest and resident expert on the subject of life after death. Even Howard Rosenberg, the Los Angeles Times distinguished television critic, dubbed James "spectacular".
Through the years his message of hope has touched a great many more people due to his television appearances on such shows as Oprah, Larry King Live, Dr. Phil, A&E Biography, Maury Povich, 20/20, and 48 Hours. His unique paranormal experiences during the past twenty-five years have seen him author best-selling books, create meditation programs and development videos, teach mediumship classes, conduct seminars to sold-out audiences, and produce successful television projects.
This book was gifted to me and signed by the bestselling author. I like this book because it is extremely basic meaning if you are not familiar with the spiritual world, James explains via personal experience, in simple terms, everything from auric fields, energy work, mediumship, and meditation. For me, this book was a run through of what I already experience and understand. For one who knows nothing of these realms, an excellent intro. James does not get all “new agey” and weird, he utilizes science and spirituality to explain things that are quite natural, abilities all of us have and some abilities some of us are predisposed to.
Another wonderful book by James Van Praagh. I always enjoy his books and loved him when I met him at his book signing here in El Cajon, San Diego County WalMart. He was shorter then I thought he would be, he signed my book different then everyone elses, he said, "That's funny, I never signed that before". Maybe he put Good Luck instead of Love because he "knew" I was writing my book then. BTW his eyes are a beautiful blue they sparkle with kindness.
THE CLAIRVOYANT EXPOUNDS HIS IDEAS, AND ANSWERS QUESTIONS
James Van Praagh is a self-described clairvoyant/spiritual medium and author. The TV movie ‘Living with the Dead’ (aka ‘Talking to Heaven’) was based on him; he also hosted the paranormal talk show ‘Beyond with James Van Praagh.’
He wrote in the Preface to this 2001 book, “Since the publication of my first book, ‘Talking to Heaven,’ in 1997, I have had the good fortune to travel around the world and share my message of life after death… I am still amazed at the number of people who are eager to learn more about psychic phenomena… Many lack personal experience with such things; others experience them but can’t identify what they are… People want to make contact with their loved ones and seek validation of their own experiences with the spirits. They want to know that these are REAL, not figments of their imagination. This book is intended to help you learn as much as possible about the world of spirit and to decide for yourself what is true or false… I hope to teach you how to hone your basic psychic abilities and sharpen your sixth sense. I also include testimony from others who have been touched by angels and visited by spirit guides… I have included exercises that you can practice to expand your own psychic awareness… For years I have been teaching that death is not the end of experience, nor is it something to be feared; there is indeed life beyond this physical world… Spirit beings from other worlds are around us all they time. These spirits serve the human population in many ways, as teachers, companions, creative inspiration, and protection… The more deeply involved you become with the spirit world… the more your life will become focused.”
He explains, “I am a clairvoyant, which means that I see visions or pictures in my mind’s eye. My mind’s eye is my third eye center, the chakra located in the area of our forehead between our eyes. When I see spirits, I see them with this third eye vision, as it I were looking at a movie screen inside my head. Most psychics use this type of inner sight when they work.” (Pg. 9)
He states, “People often ask, ‘Why do spirits say such trivial things? Why don’t they tell us about the important meanings of life?’ Spirits, like humans, have personalities, and use trivialities such as appearance, certain achievements, and even minor incidents to identify themselves. They convey trivial messages for their specificity, so that their loved ones will recognize them as ‘the real thing.’ Second, although spirits have an expanded consciousness on the other side, and are able to see every thought and action of their lifetime, their souls are still evolving. Until a soul reaches the higher heavens, its knowledge of life is still limited. Also, spirits will not interfere with our earthly lessons, either as individuals or as an entire planet of people. They will not hinder our spiritual growth by giving us the answers when it is our responsibility to make the correct choices for ourselves.” (Pg. 78)
He asserts, “Before incarnating to earth, we discuss our soul’s growth with a group of highly evolved beings known as the Etheric Council. This is the way we decide on what we want to learn, our purpose in life, and the karmic debts we want to balance. When we incarnate, our master guide stands by and makes sure we follow through on these decisions.” (Pg. 126)
He recounts that years ago, “I found myself at a Sunday service in the Hollywood Church of Religious Science. Although I was unfamiliar with its doctrine, I quickly learned that its tenets had resonance with my life. These tenets, drawn up in the 1920s by Dr. Ernest Holmes, included a belief in one divine energy source manifested through all creation. In this worldview, all human beings connect to this universal intelligence through their thoughts and intuition… As I listened to these words, I knew that they were the truth for me.” (Pg. 151-152)
In the Q&A section, he states that “The period just before falling asleep or waking up is often the best time to receive intuitive information… Everyone is psychic…. A medium is a psychic who has fine-tuned his or her extrasensory perception and can interface with the spirits in other dimensions. There are several types of mediums. I am a mental medium and can communicate with spirits while fully conscious. A trance medium … goes into a trance state to relay messages from the other side. Channels are similar to trance mediums in that… they are not in an awake state and… contact other levels of reality.” (Pg. 234-235)
He adds, “The condemnation of spirit communication can be traced to Moses… His pronouncement became part of Judaic law and ultimately Judeo-Christian doctrine. Moses did, however, sanction dreams and prophetic visions. The chief duty of the prophets of biblical times was to convey messages that would lead Israel out of bondage. However, I do not believe the Bible is a literal text. To me, ‘bondage’ does not pertain to physical enslavement but rather to spiritual deficiency.” (Pg. 237) Later, he adds, “we must remember that the parables in the Bible were not meant to be literal. The miracles attributed to Jesus are actually spiritual metaphors.” (Pg. 244)
About ‘past lives,’ he suggests, “If you think you were some heroic figure of the past, it is probably wishful thinking. Most past lives are ordinary, sometimes even dull.” (Pg. 245)
About whether animals have souls and survive death, he says, “Yes, of course they do. They, too, are souls made of energy. Energy does not die; it only changes form. Our pets and other animals pass into the spiritual realms and are usually surrounded by family members or tended by animal keepers who share an affinity with them.” (Pg. 248)
This book appeal to those who like spiritism, and related topics.
This is the second book that I've read by the author. The book is easy to read and understand. He writes in a very straight forward way. Like his newer book "Unfinished Business", this book includes true stories from his experiences as a medium. However, "Heaven and Earth" includes more techniques on meditation, getting grounded, improving intuition and one's psychic ability. This is a book that I would definitely consider buying after borrowing it from the library because of the detailed techniques. I look forward to reading more books by James Van Praagh.
I can't believe this came out in 2001 and I am just getting around to reading it. But then again, I need it now which I am sure is why it is in my life at this moment. It was great and I am buying it. Anyone who knows me knows I don't just buy any book. I love my free books from the library but this needs to be in my collection for reference purposes. Awesome...
I was gifted this book and found some of the material interesting. Honestly, I am not a big believer in mediums and psychics, which affected my feelings toward this book. However, the sections focusing on intuition, self-awareness, and trusting your gut were engaging. I also appreciated the insights and guidance on meditation. The book felt like a spiritual version of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, offering a way to connect with your psychic abilities by altering your thoughts.
“In order to get in touch with this sense of knowingness, you must begin by having an intimate relationship with yourself.”
“Becoming aware of the sensations in your body is just another step toward self-awareness and total intuitive awakening.”
The thing I like best about James is he explains the whole universe, not just how the spiritual world relates to earth. He speaks to how other worlds tie in to earth and why we're all here together. After many years of reading and studying many heart books and authors, James takes it that step further so I feel I'm getting the "whole picture". Thank you sir.
This book was a tough read. It was difficult to get into, and dragged along until about halfway through. As was mentioned in other reviews, there was so much story telling in the beginning, it seemed almost trite at times. Finally when he began actually discussing the subject at hand it became more interesting.
If you ever thought of taking classes for Metaphysical, this book would be nice to start and get a general idea with questions at the end of the book. He explains and give you examples of the Aura layers, sixth sense, children are more open to the spirit world, ouija board and much more.
Broad concepts written in a concise, easy-to-follow way. I enjoyed all the encounters and examples. Toward the end the explanations of how to do all the specific techniques was a bit repetitive. Overall enjoyable book!
Interesting look into James Van Praach's background and his related experiences. He also give pointers into how we can develop the psychic abilities we all possess.
Van Praagh explains the whole universe, not just how the spiritual world relates to Earth but how other worlds tie into ours. If you’ve read JVP other books, “Heaven and Earth” is a recap of his other works. James has a wonderful style of writing that just draws you that you don’t want to put his books down.
I like the meditations and excercises he tends to put in the last few chapters of his books, but I just skim through everything else. There are far more interesting books on the subject such as those by Rosemary Altea or Sonia Choquette.
I enjoyed this one. Van Praagh has always been a straight shooter with his writing so if you believe in psychic mediums, he is a great read. He doesn't try to sell religion or beliefs, he simply tells his story which is a refreshing change!
It was ok, but I have read other books on the subject that I enjoyed more. After a few of his stories, they all seemed very convenient and/or too perfect to be really believable. As for the practical advice, I mostly skimmed through it.
