Really interesting book, the back and forth from the earth to Mars and the interaction between the crew on Mars and the corporation that one of the twins is running on earth is unique. We're left hanging with the food scarce on Mars, their base destroyed and the geological treasure trove they've found on Mars. Can't wait for more!
I really liked the detailed descriptions in this book, some of the characters reminded me of people I had met when living in the Americas. I really enjoyed the rivalry between the twin brothers who were to inherit the family fortune of on MineCorp and how things have a way of working out. Lord Stenton, a member of the 'old guard' invokes progenitor rights on the first born of the identical twins to inherit the family titles and company shares, then ignores the 2nd born, as we have seen so many times throughout history. The twins seem to be opposite sides of the same coin making for a Ying vs Yang type brotherhood. Yet, blood is thicker than water, so to speak, and the fruit really does not fall far from the tree. A good read full of intrigue, twists and turns. I especially enjoyed the reference to the jungle culture, the Nukak Maku, with their ancient beliefs in reference to the new era to be established on Mars. All the descriptions of the workings of daily life whilst living in the harsh Martian environment were vivid enough to keep one glued to the page. Even memories were described in believable detail, "The cat roamed Hanae's childhood house with an elegant, sensual gait worthy of a giant feline." This story is action packed almost from the beginning and kept me glued to the pages, cannot wait for the sequel.
Good optimistic sci-fi story firmly anchored in today’s world and its (very near) future with the start of a colonization project to Mars. The book reminds me what I enjoyed in “The Martian” of Andy Weir and in the series “Mars” of Ron Howard, that is, the thrill of the exploration of Mars, the sceneries, the harshness of the environment and its psychological impact. But unlike these two stories, “One” is slightly less technical and also introduces a new dimension with a plan for the future for the planet. The dynamics of the two main characters -two brothers, heirs to a mining corporation- is interesting and will strike a chord with readers familiar with ‘Britishness’ (i.e. British aristocracy, establishment, etc). It is easy to read, fast-paced, action-packed, and just good fun. A very good read. Looking forward to reading the sequel.
